Aleks Paunovic | From “Van Helsing” to AMC’s “Snowpiercer” | Sweet Science & A Bass Riff

00:00 Part 1

Speaker:00:00:01

I came from living out of a van,

eating noodles from 7 Eleven,

2

00:00 Aleks Paunovic joins Story & Craft

00:04 ,930 --> 00:00:08,620

barely making any money, and then

I get to this set and they're like,

3

00:08 ,629 --> 00:00:10,400

okay, Aleks, welcome to the set.

4

00:10 ,530 --> 00:00:12,339

The buffet for breakfast

is right over there.

5

00:12 ,340 --> 00:00:13,840

And I'm like, whoa, whoa,

whoa, wait a second.

6

00:14 ,129 --> 00:00:15,409

Like I can eat that stuff?

7

00:16 ,059 --> 00:00:17,699

Welcome to Story and Craft.

8

00:18 ,259 --> 00:00:20,399

Now, here's your host, Marc Preston.

9

00:20 ,600 --> 00:00:21,040

All right.

10

00:21 ,080 --> 00:00:21,830

Welcome back.

11

00:21 ,830 --> 00:00:24,925

So glad to have you back

here for Another episode.

12

00:24 ,925 --> 00:00:28,715

If this is your first

episode of story and craft.

13

00:28 ,725 --> 00:00:29,355

Hi there.

14

00:29 ,395 --> 00:00:31,075

My name is Marc Preston.

15

00:31 ,415 --> 00:00:33,144

Glad to have you along today.

16

00:33 ,145 --> 00:00:35,165

We are chatting with Aleks Paunovic.

17

00:35 ,555 --> 00:00:37,635

He is an actor from Canada.

18

00:37 ,975 --> 00:00:41,844

Uh, you might know him

from iZombie, Van Helsing.

19

00:42 ,065 --> 00:00:43,815

He is in the new and.

20

00:44 ,829 --> 00:00:45,309

of A.

21

00:45 ,309 --> 00:00:45,550

M.

22

00:45 ,550 --> 00:00:45,699

C.

23

00:45 ,699 --> 00:00:47,169

's Snowpiercer.

24

00:47 ,249 --> 00:00:48,539

Uh, great conversation.

25

00:48 ,789 --> 00:00:50,419

Uh, Aleks used to be a boxer.

26

00:50 ,419 --> 00:00:52,239

He used to be in a heavy metal band.

27

00:52 ,249 --> 00:00:53,769

And, uh, just a great story.

28

00:53 ,779 --> 00:00:58,199

He didn't even really start seriously

acting until he was, I think, 40.

29

00:58 ,419 --> 00:01:00,079

Had a great time sitting

down and, uh, talking.

30

01:00 ,269 --> 00:01:01,919

Learning a little bit

more about his story.

31

01:01 ,930 --> 00:01:02,470

It's a good one.

32

01:02 ,470 --> 00:01:03,150

You'll enjoy it.

33

01:03 ,269 --> 00:01:03,970

Do me a favor.

34

01:03 ,970 --> 00:01:09,619

If you would, as I always humbly request,

make sure to follow story and craft on

35

01:09 ,620 --> 00:01:13,799

your podcast app, because you'll get

notified every time there's a new episode.

36

01:14 ,049 --> 00:01:16,570

Uh, leave some stars,

leave a little review.

37

01:16 ,889 --> 00:01:18,280

It's very much appreciated.

38

01:18 ,330 --> 00:01:20,950

Uh, also everything you could

possibly want to know about the

39

01:20 ,950 --> 00:01:23,240

show is at storyandcraftpod.

40

01:24 ,100 --> 00:01:24,670

com.

41

01:25 ,070 --> 00:01:27,200

Uh, you want to find

out about past guests.

42

01:27 ,200 --> 00:01:28,570

Uh, you want to shoot me a note.

43

01:28 ,945 --> 00:01:29,345

Whatever.

44

01:29 ,345 --> 00:01:30,855

It's all right there on the website.

45

01:31 ,244 --> 00:01:31,634

All right.

46

01:31 ,634 --> 00:01:33,005

So, uh, let's jump into it.

47

01:33 ,044 --> 00:01:37,734

Uh, today is Aleks Paunovic day

right here on story and craft.

48

01:39 ,554 --> 00:01:40,984

Where are you joining me from today?

49

01:41 ,354 --> 00:01:42,404

I'm in Vancouver.

50

01:42 ,424 --> 00:01:44,394

How many years of radio have you done?

51

01:44 ,830 --> 00:01:45,949

Uh, let's see here.

52

01:45 ,949 --> 00:01:50,880

I worked in a radio for

20, I think 20 years.

53

01:50 ,880 --> 00:01:51,960

I think something like that.

54

01:51 ,980 --> 00:01:54,450

You have an amazing radio voice.

55

01:55 ,710 --> 00:01:57,260

Yeah, but that's amazing voice.

56

01:57 ,660 --> 00:02:01,490

That's very kind of, you know, I was,

um, last show I did, uh, kind of like

57

02:01 ,500 --> 00:02:02,879

Michael Corleone, I kept playing.

58

02:02 ,880 --> 00:02:06,470

Pulling me back in and I

left to do voiceover and act.

59

02:06 ,509 --> 00:02:10,650

Uh, but last thing I did, I had a

syndicated show on the ABC radio network.

60

02:10 ,650 --> 00:02:14,250

And I was like, you know, my kids

were getting to that age where I did.

61

02:14 ,250 --> 00:02:17,240

I was like, you know, I want to spend

a little bit more time with, with them.

62

02:17 ,350 --> 00:02:18,850

Radio was taking up so much time.

63

02:19 ,129 --> 00:02:20,400

I had so much fun though.

64

02:20 ,420 --> 00:02:23,930

But so there's, that's kind of the

DNA of this podcast at some level

65

02:23 ,940 --> 00:02:27,070

kind of came from my radio days.

66

02:27 ,345 --> 00:02:27,615

Let's see.

67

02:27 ,615 --> 00:02:32,225

I talked to, uh, uh, someone

else who was, uh, in Vancouver.

68

02:32 ,265 --> 00:02:34,935

God, uh, Anya Savchich,

uh, spoke with her.

69

02:34 ,935 --> 00:02:36,044

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

70

02:36 ,165 --> 00:02:38,014

She's a fellow, uh, Croatian.

71

02:38 ,215 --> 00:02:38,974

So that's hilarious.

72

02:39 ,005 --> 00:02:40,775

Two, two Vancouverites.

73

02:41 ,064 --> 00:02:42,045

Yeah, exactly.

74

02:42 ,335 --> 00:02:43,145

Vancouver.

75

02:43 ,154 --> 00:02:44,245

What, what, what time zone y'all?

76

02:44 ,245 --> 00:02:46,355

It's already past lunchtime, I guess, huh?

77

02:46 ,495 --> 00:02:49,375

Yeah, it's, it's like two, I

guess, yeah, just after two.

78

02:49 ,475 --> 00:02:50,615

So what did we do for lunch today?

79

02:51 ,155 --> 00:02:55,525

Yeah, I just finished, uh, fight

rehearsal for a movie, a bunch of, uh,

80

02:55 ,615 --> 00:02:57,245

and it's stuff that I hadn't done before.

81

02:57 ,245 --> 00:02:58,665

It's like a bunch of knife fighting.

82

02:59 ,165 --> 00:03:01,825

And, uh, so I was just totally burned out.

83

03:01 ,834 --> 00:03:07,124

And I just literally, cause I usually

take a roasted chicken that I buy at

84

03:07 ,124 --> 00:03:09,024

the soup, uh, at a, at a store and then.

85

03:09 ,275 --> 00:03:10,215

Bust it all up.

86

03:10 ,575 --> 00:03:14,005

And then I just kind of like,

just nod at the other day.

87

03:14 ,005 --> 00:03:14,695

I was like, you know what?

88

03:14 ,705 --> 00:03:18,455

I told my daughter, I said, I got to

be mindful of what we're eating here.

89

03:18 ,455 --> 00:03:21,484

So, and I cook a lot, but I said,

okay, we're going to do, she's

90

03:21 ,484 --> 00:03:24,044

not a big fan of chicken, but I'm

like, man, how convenient is that?

91

03:24 ,045 --> 00:03:25,624

Go get one of those chickens, break it up.

92

03:25 ,624 --> 00:03:26,764

You can throw it into rice.

93

03:26 ,764 --> 00:03:27,965

You can throw it into a soup.

94

03:28 ,965 --> 00:03:29,484

Totally.

95

03:29 ,515 --> 00:03:31,725

We're in Texas, so you

can do fajitas out of it.

96

03:31 ,725 --> 00:03:33,875

You know, something or

tacos or whatever have you.

97

03:33 ,875 --> 00:03:34,834

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

98

03:34 ,875 --> 00:03:37,355

Uh, not fajitas cause that's a whole

different thing and I don't want

99

03:37 ,355 --> 00:03:39,515

to lose my Texas, uh, license here.

100

03:39 ,554 --> 00:03:44,415

Um, but I'm kind of a late comer to some

shows cause I've got to watch so much.

101

03:44 ,734 --> 00:03:45,634

I don't have to watch.

102

03:45 ,644 --> 00:03:49,295

I get to watch so much stuff, uh,

with, with folks to speak with.

103

03:49 ,725 --> 00:03:51,834

And I ran across iZombie.

104

03:51 ,875 --> 00:03:52,954

I was just on Netflix.

105

03:52 ,994 --> 00:03:53,725

Oh yeah, yeah.

106

03:54 ,150 --> 00:03:56,250

That was like 2015, 2016.

107

03:56 ,270 --> 00:03:57,110

When did you do that?

108

03:57 ,360 --> 00:03:57,900

Oh man.

109

03:57 ,900 --> 00:03:58,110

Yeah.

110

03:58 ,110 --> 00:03:59,870

2015, 2015.

111

03:59 ,880 --> 00:04:00,210

Yeah.

112

04:00 ,550 --> 00:04:02,940

A couple of C one season, one season.

113

04:02 ,940 --> 00:04:03,219

I did.

114

04:03 ,230 --> 00:04:03,450

Yeah.

115

04:03 ,560 --> 00:04:04,520

I love that show.

116

04:04 ,520 --> 00:04:06,900

The writing on that show,

Rob Thomas created it.

117

04:07 ,260 --> 00:04:10,839

I thought, I thought they did

such a, I have, I have friends now

118

04:10 ,920 --> 00:04:15,100

that we're on the show that, um,

I were lifelongers just because.

119

04:15 ,745 --> 00:04:16,625

It was great writing.

120

04:16 ,625 --> 00:04:20,295

So it was a great atmosphere and it was

just, there was a lot of wit to it, you

121

04:20 ,295 --> 00:04:25,275

know, that's something I kind of, yeah,

Raul, Raul, who's a buddy of mine, who's

122

04:25 ,275 --> 00:04:27,225

just been doing some amazing work lately.

123

04:27 ,235 --> 00:04:29,864

He's, uh, I love seeing his star rise.

124

04:29 ,864 --> 00:04:31,765

I love seeing everyone kind of excel.

125

04:31 ,855 --> 00:04:32,414

It's funny.

126

04:32 ,415 --> 00:04:33,105

You're on.

127

04:33 ,185 --> 00:04:36,775

You've been on programs that

are on my to watch list.

128

04:36 ,805 --> 00:04:40,545

Uh, then Helsing, uh,

Snowpiercer want to watch those.

129

04:40 ,585 --> 00:04:42,134

I just never got around to it.

130

04:42 From Music to Acting

04:42 ,145 --> 00:04:42,865

Right, right, right.

131

04:42 ,885 --> 00:04:46,175

No, you're in Vancouver, but how

did you kind of origin story?

132

04:46 ,605 --> 00:04:49,735

Uh, how did the acting

thing kick off for you?

133

04:49 ,735 --> 00:04:54,625

Was it in Vancouver or did you kind

of do a move away to LA or at New

134

04:54 ,625 --> 00:04:56,385

York to start your thing there?

135

04:57 ,265 --> 00:04:59,715

Well, that's, it's interesting

because I played in a band for

136

04:59 ,715 --> 00:05:01,925

years since I was like 15 years old.

137

05:02 ,005 --> 00:05:02,915

I kind of.

138

05:03 ,495 --> 00:05:08,115

Um, just got, you know, the boys get

together and we just started playing.

139

05:08 ,115 --> 00:05:12,205

And, and then from that, the same

group of guys, like we were playing

140

05:12 ,215 --> 00:05:16,305

in bars before we could, we're

allowed to be in original stuff or

141

05:16 ,305 --> 00:05:17,765

was this mostly your, your covering?

142

05:18 ,885 --> 00:05:22,485

It was covering, we were doing covers,

but we were writing stuff, but the

143

05:22 ,485 --> 00:05:26,145

covers got us into bars and then

we would slip in a few originals.

144

05:26 ,510 --> 00:05:28,840

Actually, we were, uh,

we're still recording.

145

05:28 ,840 --> 00:05:31,140

I'm still recording with the

same guys from high school.

146

05:31 ,260 --> 00:05:31,980

Really?

147

05:32 ,010 --> 00:05:32,430

No kidding.

148

05:32 ,430 --> 00:05:32,790

Yeah.

149

05:32 ,860 --> 00:05:34,600

It's we're called Specula black.

150

05:34 ,600 --> 00:05:36,430

It's a metal band and we're on Spotify.

151

05:36 ,440 --> 00:05:38,379

If you ever want to specula black.

152

05:38 ,480 --> 00:05:38,770

Okay.

153

05:39 ,070 --> 00:05:40,010

You got the name.

154

05:40 ,140 --> 00:05:40,469

Yeah.

155

05:40 ,469 --> 00:05:40,959

Right.

156

05:41 ,080 --> 00:05:43,189

It's all, can't be more metal than that.

157

05:43 ,240 --> 00:05:44,680

Can't be more metal than that.

158

05:45 Early Acting Experiences

05:45 ,220 --> 00:05:49,870

And so, um, and, but we would tour

and we would tour and then, um, and

159

05:49 ,870 --> 00:05:54,040

then I was just playing a bar and a

casting director asked if I would, uh,

160

05:54 ,659 --> 00:05:56,849

Audition for something in my hometown.

161

05:56 ,930 --> 00:05:59,270

And I was, I was like,

yeah, I'm a yes guy.

162

05:59 ,270 --> 00:06:00,979

So I was like, yeah, I'll give it a shot.

163

06:01 ,379 --> 00:06:03,599

I went in there, auditioned, had fun.

164

06:03 ,599 --> 00:06:06,090

There was no pressure to it

because my career was music.

165

06:06 ,479 --> 00:06:10,400

And then I ended up booking

it and just being on set.

166

06:10 ,409 --> 00:06:11,739

It was just very cool.

167

06:11 ,739 --> 00:06:12,969

It was, it was something that.

168

06:13 ,220 --> 00:06:15,750

With a band, all five have to be in sync.

169

06:15 ,750 --> 00:06:19,630

And with acting, it was something

where it's like I was in control, which

170

06:19 ,630 --> 00:06:24,029

was, which it was, uh, goes back to my

boxing days where, when I go into the

171

06:24 ,029 --> 00:06:27,319

ring, okay, everything that I learned,

now I got to bring it into the ring.

172

06:27 ,319 --> 00:06:27,939

It's just me.

173

06:27 ,939 --> 00:06:29,040

It's not a team sport.

174

06:29 ,519 --> 00:06:33,930

And then, um, and I feel like that's

the same type of vibe with acting.

175

06:33 ,930 --> 00:06:37,640

And so I ended up getting the

role, but I was really enamored

176

06:37 ,640 --> 00:06:40,090

with, How the machine worked.

177

06:40 ,150 --> 00:06:44,239

So that was in Winnipeg and, and

Winnipeg is such a small community and

178

06:44 ,239 --> 00:06:48,109

the stunt team we had, there was one,

the Skeen stunt team, which is Rick

179

06:48 ,109 --> 00:06:52,749

Skeen and his sons have gone on to, uh,

stunt coordinate and start directing

180

06:52 ,749 --> 00:06:56,119

right now, which is awesome to see,

but there was only one stunt team.

181

06:56 ,119 --> 00:07:01,064

So when I did this little gig

called heads, um, With John

182

07:01 ,064 --> 00:07:03,484

Cryer, Ed Asner, Jennifer Tilly.

183

07:03 ,905 --> 00:07:07,014

Um, and I didn't know any of

them really, except from TV.

184

07:07 ,444 --> 00:07:09,734

And I thought, I thought that was cool.

185

07:09 ,774 --> 00:07:11,234

About how old were you when you did this?

186

07:11 ,294 --> 00:07:12,334

Oh, see, I started late.

187

07:12 ,335 --> 00:07:15,064

That was, that was, that was just a whim.

188

07:15 ,085 --> 00:07:16,564

So that was a 93.

189

07:16 ,574 --> 00:07:19,054

So I would say that was

in my early thirties.

190

07:19 ,164 --> 00:07:21,294

And so with that, it was a one off.

191

07:21 ,294 --> 00:07:22,664

I just thought it was really cool.

192

07:22 ,664 --> 00:07:24,025

It was a cool experience.

193

07:24 ,025 --> 00:07:27,325

And then, um, But I

really, really enjoyed it.

194

07:27 ,375 --> 00:07:34,395

And so I thought during my band days

leading, like later on, after the

195

07:34 ,395 --> 00:07:38,124

band broke up, I joined a cover band

and I just wanted to have fun cause

196

07:38 ,125 --> 00:07:41,605

we were just grueling and, and then

like hitting the road all the time.

197

07:41 ,855 --> 00:07:43,924

Who was it that was inspiring

you in the band days?

198

07:43 ,924 --> 00:07:45,754

Like what bands were you listening to?

199

07:45 ,785 --> 00:07:47,365

Like, was it like Nine Inch Nails?

200

07:47 ,405 --> 00:07:48,285

Way back.

201

07:48 ,325 --> 00:07:49,775

We're going even further back than that.

202

07:49 ,775 --> 00:07:49,795

Yeah.

203

07:49 ,795 --> 00:07:53,045

We're talking Judas Priest, Iron Maiden.

204

07:53 ,485 --> 00:07:54,825

Early Metallica.

205

07:55 ,135 --> 00:07:57,775

Um, Ozzy Osbourne was a huge influence.

206

07:57 ,785 --> 00:07:58,605

Black Sabbath.

207

07:58 ,605 --> 00:08:00,515

So we were playing those type of tunes.

208

08:00 ,535 --> 00:08:06,445

So kind of pre hairband around around

the same time we just decided to do

209

08:06 ,445 --> 00:08:08,744

more metal and that was our our thing.

210

08:08 ,755 --> 00:08:12,625

Like Motley Crue, I was a fan

of two, but the art, our singer,

211

08:12 ,775 --> 00:08:14,145

our singer just had that.

212

08:15 ,625 --> 00:08:20,895

Um, voice that fit Judas Priest

and Metallica really well.

213

08:20 ,895 --> 00:08:23,765

And, and those were bands that

we, we really kind of admired.

214

08:24 ,115 --> 00:08:27,085

And that kind of was the road gig for us.

215

08:27 ,094 --> 00:08:30,275

I see, I loved playing metal

because it was so energetic.

216

08:30 ,275 --> 00:08:31,135

It was so fun.

217

08:31 ,290 --> 00:08:36,090

Like, like, like I wasn't a very good

bass player, but I was, I, I felt

218

08:36 ,090 --> 00:08:40,110

like I was a really great entertainer

and I love being on the stage and I

219

08:40 ,110 --> 00:08:42,000

love making people watch the band.

220

08:42 ,000 --> 00:08:46,290

So I would run around, I, I, I, you

know, I would throw my hair around

221

08:46 ,290 --> 00:08:51,750

and it was very, very, uh, metal

and, uh, and, and, uh, high action.

222

08:51 ,750 --> 00:08:53,040

And that's what we love to do.

223

08:53 ,040 --> 00:08:55,620

Like when a set was over, you

were just dripping in sweat.

224

08:56 ,000 --> 00:08:57,530

I loved playing that.

225

08:57 ,815 --> 00:09:04,405

But now, like what I love to listen to is,

you know, um, uh, Nathaniel and the, and

226

09:04 ,405 --> 00:09:09,454

the night sweats and, and, uh, uh, just a

bunch of, like, I love Foo Fighters too.

227

09:09 ,454 --> 00:09:10,725

I love those type of bands too.

228

09:10 ,725 --> 00:09:12,645

But I, and I love lo fi.

229

09:12 ,645 --> 00:09:13,915

I've been digging lo fi.

230

09:14 ,354 --> 00:09:19,025

Um, so yeah, I, I just kind of love

more bluesy, more, more, uh, yeah.

231

09:19 ,025 --> 00:09:20,495

Is it me or is it lo fi kind of?

232

09:20 ,905 --> 00:09:23,115

Making a resurgence with the younger folk.

233

09:23 ,175 --> 00:09:23,525

Yeah.

234

09:24 ,145 --> 00:09:25,325

My niece got me into that.

235

09:25 ,385 --> 00:09:28,185

It seems like the, the, the college

age, they're kind of, they're kind

236

09:28 ,185 --> 00:09:29,485

of gravitating to that, you know?

237

09:29 ,495 --> 00:09:29,685

Yeah.

238

09:29 ,685 --> 00:09:31,015

I'm, I'm all over the map.

239

09:31 ,015 --> 00:09:33,894

Like even Ed Sharon, I

dig some of his stuff too.

240

09:33 ,895 --> 00:09:35,435

Like I'm just all over the map.

241

09:35 ,435 --> 00:09:36,195

I love a bunch.

242

09:36 ,234 --> 00:09:43,945

Like there's a great playlist on Spotify

called, uh, uh, uh, gritty acoustic,

243

09:44 ,095 --> 00:09:45,585

like that type of vibe, you know?

244

09:46 ,000 --> 00:09:48,550

Um, so yeah, that's the kind

of stuff I like to listen to.

245

09:48 ,550 --> 00:09:50,270

Now, by the way, you worked with Ed Asner.

246

09:50 ,270 --> 00:09:51,160

I was curious what it's like.

247

09:51 ,410 --> 00:09:54,110

I heard he was kind of a salty,

fun, kind of a cool dude.

248

09:54 ,210 --> 00:09:57,070

Like, did you, uh, had that

much interaction with him

249

09:57 ,070 --> 00:09:58,209

when you were in that film?

250

09:58 ,280 --> 00:10:00,219

I had a little bit of an interaction.

251

10:00 ,220 --> 00:10:03,389

Roddy McDowell was actually

like, I was Roddy McDowell's

252

10:03 ,390 --> 00:10:05,630

butler and it's so crazy, man.

253

10:05 ,845 --> 00:10:09,415

The full circle that happens because

Roddy McDowell was in the first planet

254

10:09 ,415 --> 00:10:14,105

of the apes years later, I ended up

being in war for the planet of the apes.

255

10:14 ,484 --> 00:10:17,574

And I was just like, well, like what,

what a life I'm leading right now,

256

10:17 ,575 --> 00:10:19,354

because I was just so enamored with him.

257

10:19 ,365 --> 00:10:23,414

And he was so, he was so generous with

just like talking about those experiences.

258

10:23 ,520 --> 00:10:27,910

So this was, did they shoot this film

in Canada, uh, and, and Winnipeg or they

259

10:27 ,910 --> 00:10:31,690

shot it and they shot it in Winnipeg and

I was playing in a bar in Winnipeg and she

260

10:31 ,690 --> 00:10:33,270

just asked if I would audition for this.

261

10:33 ,270 --> 00:10:33,910

And I did.

262

10:34 ,120 --> 00:10:36,649

And again, there was no stress

about it because I already had a

263

10:36 ,649 --> 00:10:39,120

career in music that I was pursuing.

264

10:39 ,120 --> 00:10:42,944

So I wasn't nervous going

into, This audition.

265

10:42 ,944 --> 00:10:45,814

And so I kind of made it fun

and me and the director and I

266

10:45 ,824 --> 00:10:47,954

had a good rapport right away.

267

10:48 ,285 --> 00:10:51,274

And then I just ended up getting the

gig and I just thought it was really

268

10:51 ,314 --> 00:10:52,985

interesting being in that world.

269

10:53 ,155 --> 00:10:54,625

And honestly, honestly, like

270

10:56 ,875 --> 00:11:00,915

I came from living out of a

van, eating noodles from seven

271

11:00 ,915 --> 00:11:02,884

11, barely making any money.

272

11:03 ,204 --> 00:11:05,814

And then I get to this set,

everything's new to me.

273

11:05 ,835 --> 00:11:08,314

And they're like, okay,

Aleks, welcome to the set.

274

11:08 ,385 --> 00:11:10,914

Um, the buffet for breakfast

is right over there.

275

11:10 ,915 --> 00:11:12,415

And I'm like, whoa, whoa,

whoa, wait a second.

276

11:13 ,295 --> 00:11:16,585

Like I can eat that stuff and as much

as I want, they're like, yeah, I'll go.

277

11:17 ,155 --> 00:11:20,635

So that was one of the Genesis for

me of going, okay, I think I want

278

11:20 ,635 --> 00:11:24,735

to learn this craft so I can eat

whenever I want, as opposed to getting

279

11:24 ,735 --> 00:11:26,025

these little noodles and stuff.

280

11:26 ,284 --> 00:11:27,975

So anyway, I made it on set.

281

11:28 ,255 --> 00:11:30,969

It was, um, It was a great experience.

282

11:31 ,000 --> 00:11:35,069

Became friends with the stunt coordinator

there, Rick Skeen, and because the

283

11:35 ,079 --> 00:11:39,569

stunt team is so small, he suggested,

you know, why don't you come out?

284

11:39 ,590 --> 00:11:41,739

You can do some more,

uh, more stunt stuff.

285

11:41 ,740 --> 00:11:43,670

I don't have a big guy for fight scenes.

286

11:44 ,079 --> 00:11:47,765

So because, again, Very small

city, any movie that came in

287

11:47 ,805 --> 00:11:49,205

that stunt team was a part of.

288

11:49 ,205 --> 00:11:53,055

So I started learning my craft that

way, but it was really interesting.

289

11:53 ,105 --> 00:11:57,535

It was a huge ego check because I

kind of felt like I was falling out

290

11:57 ,575 --> 00:12:01,924

of the music stuff because the band

started falling apart and you know,

291

12:02 ,254 --> 00:12:03,744

we've been together since high school.

292

12:03 ,744 --> 00:12:07,944

Now we're in our, you know, getting in

our thirties and, and we didn't break,

293

12:08 ,004 --> 00:12:12,920

but, um, But it was one of those things

where I was really kind of doing,

294

12:12 ,949 --> 00:12:17,480

doing a shift and I really was, so I

was playing cover band, so I would.

295

12:17 ,985 --> 00:12:20,925

Be in a band playing till

two o'clock in the morning.

296

12:20 ,925 --> 00:12:23,255

Dance floor is packed, women everywhere.

297

12:23 ,255 --> 00:12:24,365

You're on a pedestal.

298

12:24 ,365 --> 00:12:25,355

Like you're playing music.

299

12:25 ,355 --> 00:12:28,675

You're a rock star in those kinds of

atmospheres, but drinks are flowing.

300

12:28 ,875 --> 00:12:31,785

But right from when we,

I would wrap at 2 a.

301

12:31 ,785 --> 00:12:32,094

m.

302

12:32 ,094 --> 00:12:35,425

With playing the band, I would go to set.

303

12:35 ,895 --> 00:12:40,335

And be basically a gopher so I could

just be on set and learn what's going on.

304

12:40 ,335 --> 00:12:44,625

And, and Rick would, uh, always

go, okay, so do this and do that.

305

12:44 ,795 --> 00:12:47,545

Hey, why don't you get us some

coffees and then, oh yeah, by the

306

12:47 ,545 --> 00:12:51,034

way, don't talk to the actors like

that, that your job is to do stunts.

307

12:51 ,034 --> 00:12:54,015

So I was just enamored with the

whole thing, but I was, part of me

308

12:54 ,024 --> 00:12:55,855

was like, I kind of want to do that.

309

12:56 ,195 --> 00:12:57,525

I want to, I want to do that.

310

12:57 ,525 --> 00:12:57,645

I.

311

12:57 ,845 --> 00:13:02,005

And I have so much respect for the stunt

community, massive respect, but it was

312

13:02 ,005 --> 00:13:03,855

something I just wanted to tell stories.

313

13:04 Transition to Serious Acting

13:04 ,225 --> 00:13:07,985

And, um, so I, then I just started

taking workshops cause I didn't

314

13:08 ,014 --> 00:13:10,665

take acting seriously till I was 35.

315

13:10 ,985 --> 00:13:13,095

I really didn't start booking till I was.

316

13:13 ,370 --> 00:13:17,090

40 in my forties and I didn't

start actually making a

317

13:17 ,090 --> 00:13:18,800

living till my mid forties.

318

13:19 ,229 --> 00:13:25,039

So I started quite late and uh, I felt

like I w I was just quite fortunate and,

319

13:25 ,039 --> 00:13:26,949

and I didn't want to go to school for it.

320

13:27 ,250 --> 00:13:29,489

I wanted to do like workshops.

321

13:29 ,489 --> 00:13:33,350

So I did a bunch of workshops in Los

Angeles and New York and Vancouver just

322

13:33 ,360 --> 00:13:36,430

to get a condensed, idea of the craft.

323

13:36 ,930 --> 00:13:41,680

And, but when I was in Winnipeg, I

realized I do love this, but what if I

324

13:41 ,719 --> 00:13:43,520

can't get a job in front of the camera?

325

13:43 ,890 --> 00:13:45,819

So I wanted to learn

everything behind the camera.

326

13:45 ,819 --> 00:13:49,669

So I went to the National Institute

of Broadcast just to learn more, uh,

327

13:49 ,680 --> 00:13:53,949

basically about broadcasting and making

little clips and making commercials.

328

13:53 ,949 --> 00:13:58,160

And, and I was like the cameraman

for the, in Winnipeg, in the CFL,

329

13:58 ,170 --> 00:14:01,745

the Canadian football league,

I had no Basically no money.

330

14:01 ,755 --> 00:14:06,585

And I said, I'm going to go to Vancouver,

then to LA and try this acting thing.

331

14:06 ,605 --> 00:14:09,415

And that's when nine 11 hit

when I got to Vancouver.

332

14:09 ,875 --> 00:14:10,124

Yeah.

333

14:10 ,124 --> 00:14:14,635

When a nine 11 hit, I was, um, we

could, I couldn't go, it was, it was

334

14:14 ,645 --> 00:14:16,455

a lot harder to get across the border.

335

14:17 ,359 --> 00:14:20,680

So I just decided to stay in Vancouver

and just kind of cut my chops here.

336

14:20 ,680 --> 00:14:22,010

And, and I'm glad I did.

337

14:22 ,010 --> 00:14:23,170

I got a lot of experience.

338

14:23 ,170 --> 00:14:26,699

There's once, uh, after nine 11, you're

still up there working in Vancouver.

339

14:26 ,699 --> 00:14:30,060

When did, did you ever make your way

down to LA and, you know, yeah, I did.

340

14:31 ,000 --> 00:14:35,550

And I just found it, uh, I just

didn't find my people there yet.

341

14:35 ,599 --> 00:14:37,180

And I found a lot of great.

342

14:37 ,720 --> 00:14:42,080

People in Vancouver and, and then I

got an agent in Vancouver and then

343

14:42 ,080 --> 00:14:44,190

it's, it's the audition started coming.

344

14:44 ,190 --> 00:14:48,150

And I just felt like I felt like this

was a great place to cut my teeth.

345

14:48 ,150 --> 00:14:52,159

Cause I know a lot of people that,

um, went to Los Angeles and then

346

14:52 ,160 --> 00:14:55,229

just wouldn't work and like, wouldn't

even get, they would be excited for

347

14:55 ,229 --> 00:14:59,460

like two auditions a month and I was

getting two auditions a day sometimes.

348

14:59 ,460 --> 00:14:59,910

And I was.

349

15:00 ,160 --> 00:15:04,500

I just felt like the, the quantity of

what the work that I could possibly

350

15:04 ,500 --> 00:15:07,480

get in Vancouver was something that

would help me get there a lot faster.

351

15:07 ,510 --> 00:15:10,210

I mean, you're 6'5 you know, you're

a bigger guy and were they, was

352

15:10 ,210 --> 00:15:13,240

it mostly physical roles that

they were looking at you going,

353

15:13 ,240 --> 00:15:14,259

this is the guy that can do that?

354

15:14 ,290 --> 00:15:14,570

Yeah.

355

15:14 ,570 --> 00:15:14,820

Yeah.

356

15:15 ,010 --> 00:15:19,080

I mean, I feel like everyone's typecast

in, in, in, in a certain manner.

357

15:19 ,080 --> 00:15:20,660

Like you don't see Tom Cruise.

358

15:20 ,680 --> 00:15:23,840

Being a bouncer, like he, he is who he is.

359

15:23 ,840 --> 00:15:26,790

And I, and I, and I understood

that, but I knew I wanted to

360

15:26 ,790 --> 00:15:31,750

tell more stories, more than thug

number two or, or things like that.

361

15:31 ,750 --> 00:15:34,140

And then those were the ones that

were coming to me, which were fine.

362

15:34 ,639 --> 00:15:38,649

And then I, I really started to kind

of dive in because I wanted to, I

363

15:38 ,750 --> 00:15:43,330

just wanted to tell more stories

from, from the vessel that I had.

364

15:43 ,710 --> 00:15:50,150

And, uh, there's an amazing acting

coach who, who, uh, who, uh, Coach

365

15:50 ,150 --> 00:15:54,750

DiCaprio and Hillary Swank to their

Oscars, Larry Moss, one of the best.

366

15:55 ,439 --> 00:15:58,559

And because I come from a boxing

background, I have three generations

367

15:58 ,560 --> 00:16:02,060

of boxers in my family, and a music

background, you have to rehearse.

368

16:02 ,060 --> 00:16:06,139

Like, everyone rehearses, or Michael

Jordan practices, he has this thing.

369

16:06 ,255 --> 00:16:08,314

Bunch of shots before he

actually hits the game.

370

16:08 ,314 --> 00:16:12,194

So I, I think it's essential

to, to get coaching and to work

371

16:12 ,194 --> 00:16:16,094

through a project with somebody

that gives you options and ideas.

372

16:16 ,094 --> 00:16:21,754

But Larry changed my brain because

like I said, I wasn't a very good bass

373

16:21 ,754 --> 00:16:23,704

player, but I was a great entertainer.

374

16:23 ,984 --> 00:16:28,804

And I brought that ideology to

acting where I felt like if I

375

16:28 ,804 --> 00:16:33,280

was big and Either funny or scary

that I can get away with it.

376

16:33 ,690 --> 00:16:38,250

And I, and he changed my life with this

one thing where, where I, I got on stage

377

16:38 ,250 --> 00:16:42,319

and he, he knew through somebody else

that I used to play in a band, but no

378

16:42 ,319 --> 00:16:43,729

one told him what instrument I played.

379

16:43 ,729 --> 00:16:46,390

And so I got up there and

I was kind of smacking.

380

16:46 ,430 --> 00:16:49,870

I wasn't really doing a great

job, but I was having fun.

381

16:49 ,870 --> 00:16:52,310

And I think not really doing a great job.

382

16:52 ,560 --> 00:16:55,410

gave me an excuse to go, well,

I wasn't really trying if I

383

16:55 ,430 --> 00:16:56,820

sucked, I wasn't really trying.

384

16:57 ,300 --> 00:17:00,989

And so, so I was up there and

it was probably in front of 300

385

17:00 ,989 --> 00:17:02,589

people and he stopped the scene.

386

17:02 ,989 --> 00:17:03,329

Yeah.

387

17:03 ,329 --> 00:17:04,839

And he stopped the scene.

388

17:04 ,879 --> 00:17:08,839

And again, I'm like, I have no problem

in a band, but this was new to me.

389

17:08 ,839 --> 00:17:11,500

So I loved performing,

but this made me nervous.

390

17:11 ,500 --> 00:17:14,790

And so he stopped the scene

and he said, somebody told

391

17:14 ,790 --> 00:17:15,879

me that you played in a band.

392

17:15 ,879 --> 00:17:17,189

And I went, Yeah.

393

17:17 ,189 --> 00:17:17,829

Yeah, I did.

394

17:17 ,829 --> 00:17:18,730

I'm joking around.

395

17:19 ,079 --> 00:17:21,800

And then he says to the audience,

no offense to anyone who plays this

396

17:21 ,800 --> 00:17:26,449

instrument, but I, I'm guessing you

played the bass guitar and people

397

17:26 ,449 --> 00:17:27,840

laughed and I kind of air banded.

398

17:28 ,070 --> 00:17:29,800

I kind of air banded a bit, right?

399

17:29 ,800 --> 00:17:30,650

I went, yeah, I did.

400

17:31 ,140 --> 00:17:35,760

And then he yelled, he was like

quiet and everyone just stopped.

401

17:35 ,810 --> 00:17:38,120

And he looked and he just

pierced me with this.

402

17:38 ,120 --> 00:17:42,320

He goes, how dare you play a

poorly played bass when you

403

17:42 ,330 --> 00:17:43,879

have an orchestra inside you.

404

17:44 ,850 --> 00:17:46,919

And it melted me.

405

17:47 ,100 --> 00:17:51,600

He goes, I don't, you're

ripping the whole audience off

406

17:51 ,800 --> 00:17:53,159

from the vessel that you have.

407

17:53 ,160 --> 00:17:56,790

And you're only playing the

bass and you're wasting my time.

408

17:56 ,810 --> 00:17:58,040

And you're wasting my money.

409

17:58 ,200 --> 00:18:02,019

Why am I sitting here watching

you do the best that you can?

410

18:02 ,610 --> 00:18:04,419

And he saw right through it.

411

18:04 ,419 --> 00:18:06,070

And that changed everything.

412

18:06 ,070 --> 00:18:10,320

I just started really like, like

it basically opened up my recourse.

413

18:10 ,480 --> 00:18:14,840

ribcage and I decided, okay, if I'm going

to tell stories from this vessel and the

414

18:14 ,840 --> 00:18:19,070

history that I'm, that I've had in my

life, then I've got to do it full on.

415

18:19 ,189 --> 00:18:21,809

The most interesting students are

usually ones a little bit older.

416

18:21 ,809 --> 00:18:23,160

They got more life experience.

417

18:23 ,160 --> 00:18:28,060

They've had more life experience,

known more people that and kids

418

18:28 ,180 --> 00:18:31,220

because kids, uh, the kid actors I

work with, like some Disney channel

419

18:31 ,220 --> 00:18:33,530

kids, they still remember how to play.

420

18:33 ,880 --> 00:18:34,890

You know, and that's the thing.

421

18:34 ,890 --> 00:18:37,110

I think if you're an adult and

you remember how to play and you

422

18:37 ,110 --> 00:18:40,520

got life experience, it's gotta

be so much more fun for you.

423

18:40 ,590 --> 00:18:42,720

It is, but I had it backwards.

424

18:42 ,720 --> 00:18:44,920

Like I was playing without

actually doing the work.

425

18:44 ,920 --> 00:18:49,679

So I got to be able to play and then

really concentrate in doing the work,

426

18:49 ,680 --> 00:18:54,470

find, finding the motivation and,

and, you know, regardless of, of, um,

427

18:55 ,580 --> 00:18:57,564

how, like where it, where it's going.

428

18:57 ,774 --> 00:19:00,304

Where the hurt was coming from

when I was telling a story that

429

19:00 ,304 --> 00:19:01,975

was, had to be very vulnerable.

430

19:02 ,445 --> 00:19:05,835

And so once I started tapping

into that and being serious about

431

19:05 ,835 --> 00:19:07,025

that, it allowed me to play.

432

19:14 Family Background and Influences

19:14 ,544 --> 00:19:18,924

You said you came from a background

of, uh, or from family who, who boxed.

433

19:19 ,075 --> 00:19:20,915

What'd your folks do back home?

434

19:21 ,685 --> 00:19:22,535

Well, back home.

435

19:22 ,565 --> 00:19:24,985

I'm like my dad in the old Yugoslavia.

436

19:25 ,540 --> 00:19:29,230

My dad was like on his way to the

68 Olympics, cracked his knee.

437

19:29 ,290 --> 00:19:30,110

And that was it.

438

19:30 ,110 --> 00:19:33,540

And by that time, my mom was

already pregnant with my brother

439

19:33 ,540 --> 00:19:36,730

and saying, look, are you, I'm going

to move to Canada, you and you out.

440

19:37 ,070 --> 00:19:38,370

And he goes like, all right, I'm in.

441

19:38 ,419 --> 00:19:43,169

So they came over and my, my dad

basically was a carpenter and my mom.

442

19:43 ,419 --> 00:19:44,649

Was cleaning houses.

443

19:44 ,649 --> 00:19:50,169

It was, we, we grew up quite poor, uh, but

you don't know when you're a kid, really.

444

19:50 ,220 --> 00:19:50,590

Yeah.

445

19:50 ,639 --> 00:19:50,970

Yeah.

446

19:51 ,060 --> 00:19:55,669

And then, but my mom's drive was she,

she always wanted to see the world.

447

19:55 ,669 --> 00:19:59,090

She loved the idea of history and

she wanted to be a travel agent.

448

19:59 ,090 --> 00:20:02,810

So she got a job as a travel agent

and then she opened her own travel

449

20:02 ,810 --> 00:20:06,310

agency and became very successful with

her own business for over 40 years.

450

20:06 ,970 --> 00:20:07,600

So, okay.

451

20:07 ,649 --> 00:20:08,050

Yeah.

452

20:08 ,050 --> 00:20:13,770

So it was really, it was really, um, An

ascension from, you know, we literally

453

20:13 ,830 --> 00:20:17,270

lived in this small little house, like

when we talk about it now, I'm like,

454

20:17 ,270 --> 00:20:21,510

I had no idea that we were that poor

where, you know, my, my dad would,

455

20:22 ,349 --> 00:20:25,769

uh, you know, Eastern European thing

where you don't, when you don't have

456

20:25 ,769 --> 00:20:29,249

money, you think you're a failure and

you can't even buy milk for the, for

457

20:29 ,249 --> 00:20:31,899

your kids and how, how tough that was.

458

20:31 ,899 --> 00:20:34,459

And again, you know, we

didn't know growing up.

459

20:35 ,030 --> 00:20:37,650

Um, But yeah, it was really,

really tough for them.

460

20:37 ,650 --> 00:20:41,300

And they just persevered and gave

my, like my brother's a doctor and

461

20:41 ,300 --> 00:20:43,280

I'm an actor and we're both thriving.

462

20:43 ,280 --> 00:20:47,280

And, um, it's really great to kind of

sit with the family and go, man, you

463

20:47 ,289 --> 00:20:52,350

know, you, you've got this Eastern

European mentality, work ethic.

464

20:52 ,625 --> 00:20:54,115

Uh, did that really influence you?

465

20:54 ,115 --> 00:20:54,504

You think?

466

20:54 ,524 --> 00:20:57,485

I mean, as far as like you said, your

father's carpenter, you know, you

467

20:57 ,514 --> 00:20:58,965

know, to me, that's art, you know?

468

20:58 ,975 --> 00:20:59,245

Yeah.

469

20:59 ,245 --> 00:21:04,364

Well, he, he, I mean, when I say that he,

he, he was, he was, uh, like, you know,

470

21:04 ,365 --> 00:21:05,935

putting nails in the stairs type thing.

471

21:05 ,935 --> 00:21:08,874

He was building houses in

that, in that aspect of it.

472

21:09 ,224 --> 00:21:09,564

Yeah.

473

21:09 ,595 --> 00:21:09,825

Yeah.

474

21:09 ,825 --> 00:21:10,904

That, that kind of thing.

475

21:10 ,905 --> 00:21:12,975

He used his hands a lot, worked up North.

476

21:13 ,405 --> 00:21:16,305

Um, it was a very, very, very tough job.

477

21:16 ,305 --> 00:21:17,705

So it wasn't very artistic.

478

21:17 ,705 --> 00:21:20,485

It was just the thing that

he knew to do after boxing.

479

21:21 ,110 --> 00:21:24,639

So, um, yeah, so, you know, and I had no.

480

21:25 ,165 --> 00:21:29,095

And him and I had a tough relationship

because we're alike and he wanted

481

21:29 ,105 --> 00:21:32,455

better for me, but he didn't know how to

explain that in the Eastern European way.

482

21:33 ,015 --> 00:21:35,685

And so anything sports

wise, he was right in there.

483

21:35 ,695 --> 00:21:38,114

But again, we, you know, we butted heads.

484

21:38 ,505 --> 00:21:42,704

And then all of a sudden, you know,

when the, when I asked for a bass

485

21:42 ,735 --> 00:21:44,485

guitar, he had no interest in it.

486

21:44 ,615 --> 00:21:46,899

And I was like, Oh, Oh, okay.

487

21:47 ,189 --> 00:21:48,489

I think, I think I like this.

488

21:48 ,489 --> 00:21:52,470

I like the, him not being

around for me creating.

489

21:52 ,800 --> 00:21:58,470

So that's actually, you know, the impetus

that led me to music and the arts was

490

21:58 ,590 --> 00:22:00,320

that he didn't want to be involved in it.

491

22:00 ,729 --> 00:22:03,260

Well, it sounds like you were kind

of carving out your own space.

492

22:03 ,269 --> 00:22:03,789

Yeah.

493

22:04 ,099 --> 00:22:04,409

Yeah.

494

22:04 ,409 --> 00:22:08,189

But that was pushed into because

I didn't want him hanging around.

495

22:09 ,075 --> 00:22:12,255

So, so, and then, and then

I discovered the love of it.

496

22:12 ,485 --> 00:22:15,655

And that's what really kind of

got me, got me into the arts.

497

22:15 ,655 --> 00:22:18,285

I love the idea of

expression, even boxing.

498

22:18 ,285 --> 00:22:20,445

Like, even though we butted

heads, I love boxing.

499

22:20 ,445 --> 00:22:22,025

Cause there's a physical expression.

500

22:22 ,294 --> 00:22:23,835

It's not just two guys punching us.

501

22:24 ,055 --> 00:22:24,485

each other.

502

22:24 ,485 --> 00:22:25,435

It's a science to it.

503

22:25 ,435 --> 00:22:27,045

It's movement of its body movement.

504

22:27 ,375 --> 00:22:28,495

So I love the idea.

505

22:28 ,495 --> 00:22:32,705

And I always bring boxing into my

work in, you know, when I, I, when

506

22:32 ,705 --> 00:22:37,114

I did one of my first plays and how

nervous I was to do a first play.

507

22:37 ,115 --> 00:22:40,054

And I was like, wait a second,

this is exactly what it feels

508

22:40 ,054 --> 00:22:41,364

like before I go into a fight.

509

22:41 ,395 --> 00:22:42,844

I know how to manage this.

510

22:43 ,245 --> 00:22:46,374

So I was lucky that I can

con I connected the two.

511

22:46 ,374 --> 00:22:49,445

And I just started shadow boxing

in the back before we would go on.

512

22:49 ,794 --> 00:22:54,054

Released all the, all the excess energy

and then I could go out and do my work.

513

22:54 ,314 --> 00:22:58,784

So I was lucky that I could compare it,

um, that I had something to compare it to.

514

22:59 ,364 --> 00:23:02,194

So that, so that's how I got

into the boxing end of it, but

515

23:02 ,195 --> 00:23:05,794

I love the creativity of it

and, and, and I had no one.

516

23:06 ,194 --> 00:23:07,394

To teach me acting.

517

23:07 ,394 --> 00:23:11,854

I didn't, it wasn't like, you know,

my, like my mom wanted me to take

518

23:11 ,854 --> 00:23:15,974

over the travel business and then,

and I kind of knew a lot about the

519

23:15 ,974 --> 00:23:19,524

travel business just with, you know,

her around the house, but it just

520

23:19 ,624 --> 00:23:21,464

wasn't something that I wanted to do.

521

23:21 ,834 --> 00:23:27,474

So it had come from a place where no one

knew the arts and was almost kind of, um,

522

23:27 ,484 --> 00:23:32,070

looked down upon if I didn't, cause again,

my brother's getting a doctor's degree.

523

23:32 ,560 --> 00:23:36,330

So, um, but, but they were very

supportive of what I wanted to do.

524

23:36 ,330 --> 00:23:39,889

At least I was off the streets and I was

doing something that was productive and

525

23:39 ,889 --> 00:23:42,040

they were hoping I would get a solid job.

526

23:42 ,430 --> 00:23:45,419

Um, and everything worked out and

they were always supportive of

527

23:45 ,419 --> 00:23:46,549

me, which is, which was great.

528

23:46 Career Highlights and Collaborations

23:46 ,610 --> 00:23:49,459

You were talking about that first

film and, uh, in, in Manitoba,

529

23:49 ,579 --> 00:23:50,499

where'd you go from there?

530

23:50 ,499 --> 00:23:55,315

You know, what was, cause I know that,

you know, you started showing up, On TV.

531

23:55 ,495 --> 00:23:59,005

Uh, was there like a preference to, you

know, be a more episodic kind of stuff or

532

23:59 ,025 --> 00:24:02,685

did you want to be in movies or is it just

wherever the work was you wanted to go to?

533

24:02 ,705 --> 00:24:03,285

Was there a plan?

534

24:03 ,285 --> 00:24:05,454

I'm a big yes guy.

535

24:05 ,454 --> 00:24:08,785

So wherever the word, whatever,

wherever the work was that allowed

536

24:08 ,785 --> 00:24:11,025

me to be creative TV or film.

537

24:11 ,185 --> 00:24:13,235

And I did a film called seven times lucky.

538

24:13 ,255 --> 00:24:17,245

That was, um, like a pretty

soon after, like, uh, probably a

539

24:17 ,295 --> 00:24:20,345

couple of years after another one

with Dean Cain called Christmas

540

24:20 ,345 --> 00:24:22,545

rush, just because I was the big.

541

24:23 ,770 --> 00:24:29,739

So I started learning it in that way, but

I, I just love the idea of, of, of taking

542

24:29 ,739 --> 00:24:34,330

the craft to, to the, a different level

for me, but I, it was always a yes for me.

543

24:34 ,330 --> 00:24:36,499

Like television or film, it didn't matter.

544

24:36 ,499 --> 00:24:41,339

I was just happy that I got picked and,

and, and I, I could go play and be on set.

545

24:41 ,750 --> 00:24:46,070

And, um, and I did a lot of

things for free just to be on set.

546

24:46 ,080 --> 00:24:51,245

Like I, I did a, uh, you a bunch of

independent films and short films.

547

24:51 ,245 --> 00:24:57,945

I even put money into a, a short film

that, um, what's quite a vulnerable, uh,

548

24:57 ,965 --> 00:25:00,415

film that no one would usually cast me in.

549

25:01 ,015 --> 00:25:03,175

And so I had to kind of

put the money behind it.

550

25:04 ,064 --> 00:25:09,065

I could get that energy out and it wasn't

necessarily like for everyone to see me.

551

25:09 ,065 --> 00:25:11,855

It was more for me to go,

can I actually do this?

552

25:11 ,875 --> 00:25:15,485

Can I, can I, can I tell the stories

that I think that I can tell him?

553

25:15 ,545 --> 00:25:19,125

Or am I that American Idol audition

where my mom says I'm really good?

554

25:19 ,335 --> 00:25:20,025

You know what I mean?

555

25:20 ,464 --> 00:25:24,425

So, so it was one of those

things where I like, you know,

556

25:24 ,825 --> 00:25:26,345

put up or shut up type of thing.

557

25:26 ,385 --> 00:25:31,190

Um, And I just, I just, I just wanted

to put myself in positions to work.

558

25:31 ,560 --> 00:25:32,690

And I still feel that way.

559

25:32 ,920 --> 00:25:35,790

I, you know, there's a few short

films that came, came my way.

560

25:35 ,790 --> 00:25:38,650

And if it wasn't for me working,

I'd probably do them just because I

561

25:38 ,660 --> 00:25:42,280

like the people and the older I get,

the more I want to work with people

562

25:42 ,280 --> 00:25:43,830

that I really enjoy being around.

563

25:43 ,950 --> 00:25:44,120

Yeah.

564

25:44 ,169 --> 00:25:47,010

I saw you were in the most dangerous game.

565

25:47 ,160 --> 00:25:50,010

And I, I spoke with Billy

Burke, I think right way back.

566

25:50 ,285 --> 00:25:51,715

When he was about to start doing that.

567

25:52 ,095 --> 00:25:54,245

But did you have a chance to

spend time with Christophe Waltz?

568

25:54 ,285 --> 00:25:56,135

Did you have a chance

to do any work with him?

569

25:56 ,175 --> 00:25:59,815

Dude, I was so looking forward to

working with Christophe, but I had a

570

25:59 ,815 --> 00:26:05,095

different storyline, so I wasn't with

him, but I was just really, I w I was,

571

26:05 ,385 --> 00:26:10,195

I was blown away that I was even in

the same show as him, but, um, I did

572

26:10 ,195 --> 00:26:14,215

not get a chance to work with him,

but I did the, uh, Nick Santora, who.

573

26:14 ,520 --> 00:26:15,460

cast me in that.

574

26:15 ,790 --> 00:26:19,830

He also, um, he, he enjoyed my

work there and, and he offered

575

26:19 ,830 --> 00:26:25,329

me, uh, a part in, um, uh, FUBAR

with Arnold Arnold Schwarzenegger.

576

26:25 ,360 --> 00:26:25,769

Oh yeah.

577

26:25 ,769 --> 00:26:25,959

Yeah.

578

26:25 ,959 --> 00:26:26,279

Yeah.

579

26:26 ,300 --> 00:26:26,669

Yeah.

580

26:26 ,729 --> 00:26:31,689

And so I have a, so I'm a huge

Schwarzenegger fan too, like back

581

26:31 ,689 --> 00:26:36,580

from, You know, uh, well, just,

just, uh, why was it pumping

582

26:36 ,580 --> 00:26:38,269

iron and, you know, Terminator?

583

26:38 ,269 --> 00:26:38,939

Oh yeah.

584

26:38 ,939 --> 00:26:39,139

Yeah.

585

26:39 ,139 --> 00:26:39,310

Yeah.

586

26:39 ,310 --> 00:26:39,629

Oh God.

587

26:39 ,659 --> 00:26:40,459

You're on the way back.

588

26:40 ,459 --> 00:26:40,769

Yeah.

589

26:40 ,799 --> 00:26:41,870

I'm I'm going way back.

590

26:41 Meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger

26:41 ,870 --> 00:26:44,959

Cause my brother was huge

into, uh, um, bodybuilding.

591

26:44 ,969 --> 00:26:48,899

So, uh, pumping iron when we

watched it, I was like, my God.

592

26:48 ,939 --> 00:26:51,209

And so now I'm actually

in a, in a show with them.

593

26:51 ,409 --> 00:26:53,639

But again, I didn't have any

scenes with Arnold, but when I

594

26:53 ,679 --> 00:26:57,990

went to, to set for wardrobe, it

was his last day of the season.

595

26:58 ,000 --> 00:26:59,620

So everyone's saying bye to him.

596

26:59 ,620 --> 00:27:00,490

Um, Type thing.

597

27:00 ,490 --> 00:27:03,200

And I'm like, Oh my God, I

just, I would love to meet him.

598

27:03 ,200 --> 00:27:06,600

So I asked the AD, I love fangirling too.

599

27:06 ,600 --> 00:27:09,300

I I'm a big, big, I love it.

600

27:09 ,330 --> 00:27:13,350

I love being like blown away by people's

work and then getting to meet them.

601

27:13 ,740 --> 00:27:15,280

And he, he was one of them.

602

27:15 ,280 --> 00:27:17,969

And so I asked the AD, I look, man,

if there's a chance, I can just.

603

27:18 ,165 --> 00:27:18,504

Meet him.

604

27:18 ,514 --> 00:27:20,695

It would be great, but I

totally get he's super busy.

605

27:21 ,044 --> 00:27:21,874

Let me ask him.

606

27:21 ,874 --> 00:27:26,494

So he went to go ask him And he

looks over the ad shoulder And i'm

607

27:26 ,494 --> 00:27:30,235

kind of like kicking rocks kind

of do to do And uh, and he goes.

608

27:30 ,235 --> 00:27:30,405

Yeah.

609

27:30 ,405 --> 00:27:33,335

Yeah, i'll meet him and he kind of

waves me over I'm, like this is awesome.

610

27:33 ,454 --> 00:27:37,274

So I put out my hand and I said Hey,

thanks so much for having me a part of

611

27:37 ,494 --> 00:27:41,715

a part of the show and i'm a big fan

of pumping you and terminate I mean

612

27:41 ,945 --> 00:27:46,219

pumping iron and terminator and he goes

whoa You're a big fan of pumping me.

613

27:46 ,239 --> 00:27:47,139

I went, no, no, no, no.

614

27:49 ,449 --> 00:27:51,879

Big fan, big fan of pumping iron.

615

27:52 ,110 --> 00:27:54,040

And, and terminally goes

and he grabs my shoulder.

616

27:54 ,040 --> 00:27:55,479

He goes, I don't go that way.

617

27:55 ,549 --> 00:27:58,219

And he laughs his way away from me off.

618

27:58 ,219 --> 00:28:02,410

He goes and, and, and he had so much

joy that he caught me in this little

619

28:02 ,459 --> 00:28:06,760

flub and that was my experience

with, with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

620

28:06 ,980 --> 00:28:07,459

So funny.

621

28:07 ,459 --> 00:28:11,070

I was, uh, last night we were, uh, my, my

daughter, I'm always trying to find movies

622

28:11 ,070 --> 00:28:14,260

that, you know, she would want to watch

she's on her gap year down here with me.

623

28:14 ,370 --> 00:28:18,800

Um, and like, I was like, okay,

we haven't seen true lies yet.

624

28:18 ,810 --> 00:28:19,840

And that's kind of a cool movie.

625

28:19 ,840 --> 00:28:20,770

And I, they know the story.

626

28:20 ,770 --> 00:28:22,679

Uh, that was 21.

627

28:22 ,679 --> 00:28:27,429

I was working at ABC radio and I went and

did a press junket in LA for true lies.

628

28:27 ,449 --> 00:28:29,279

And I was like, Oh, that's kind

of, it's kind of a fun movie.

629

28:29 ,280 --> 00:28:33,319

You might like, and in any opera, you

know, being a dad, any opportunity,

630

28:33 ,319 --> 00:28:34,830

I can tell some old stories.

631

28:35 ,310 --> 00:28:39,660

And I remember after interviewing him,

uh, it was one of those press junkets

632

28:39 ,670 --> 00:28:43,035

where they, you know, all the, Press

people are in a hotel room and they

633

28:43 ,035 --> 00:28:44,435

cycle the actors through the room.

634

28:45 ,035 --> 00:28:46,775

And then I'm walking out in the hallway.

635

28:47 ,085 --> 00:28:49,865

I just like, I hadn't had a chance

to shake his hand and I was quite

636

28:49 ,865 --> 00:28:51,554

impressed by the size of his hand.

637

28:51 ,554 --> 00:28:53,965

You know, this is going

back 1994, I think.

638

28:54 ,014 --> 00:28:55,004

Right, right.

639

28:55 ,105 --> 00:28:58,174

And he was still this, this,

this mountain of a dude.

640

28:58 ,205 --> 00:29:03,149

And I went downstairs and, uh,

I was going to go get, I forgot.

641

29:03 ,149 --> 00:29:04,219

I was going to go get something to eat.

642

29:04 ,219 --> 00:29:07,969

And I go, and I see this, this,

uh, uh, Hummer there with a

643

29:07 ,969 --> 00:29:10,029

license plate that says Terminator.

644

29:10 ,429 --> 00:29:12,889

I'm like, this guy's ballsy, man.

645

29:12 ,889 --> 00:29:15,190

It's like, you know, driving around

LA and this, I meant to talk about

646

29:15 ,200 --> 00:29:18,229

the OG Hummers, not the, you know,

the ones that look like they're out.

647

29:18 ,230 --> 00:29:18,430

Right.

648

29:18 ,460 --> 00:29:19,879

Those massive, massive ones.

649

29:19 ,879 --> 00:29:20,120

Right.

650

29:20 ,385 --> 00:29:22,665

You've had a couple of

good stretches in series.

651

29:23 ,004 --> 00:29:23,945

How did you land that?

652

29:23 ,945 --> 00:29:27,795

Were you just, was it just kind of

snowballing or you said you're a yes guy.

653

29:28 ,084 --> 00:29:30,974

So were these opportunities just out

there and you were like jumping on them?

654

29:32 ,044 --> 00:29:36,975

A lot of that, but I mean, you know,

um, Van Helsing, the character of Julius

655

29:36 ,975 --> 00:29:43,474

started out as a, as a recurring character

for a few episodes and I became really

656

29:43 ,534 --> 00:29:47,924

tight with Neil LaButte and, and Simon

Barry, who was a, who was a dear friend

657

29:47 ,924 --> 00:29:49,774

of mine now who were the showrunners.

658

29:50 ,224 --> 00:29:57,605

And, uh, And because it's such the, the,

the role of Julius and he was a vampire,

659

29:57 ,605 --> 00:29:59,795

he was just such an evil, evil dude.

660

29:59 ,815 --> 00:30:02,715

And then they would yell cut and

I would just be joking around and

661

30:02 ,965 --> 00:30:04,535

playing with, playing with everyone.

662

30:04 ,545 --> 00:30:05,385

Practical jokes.

663

30:05 ,385 --> 00:30:06,805

I love practical jokes on set.

664

30:07 ,065 --> 00:30:10,075

And then when it'd be time for action,

I'd get back into that character.

665

30:10 ,175 --> 00:30:13,080

To me, it would be like, If you're

affable, easy to get along, although

666

30:13 ,150 --> 00:30:16,600

it seems like it's like the gnarlier,

you know, out there you could be.

667

30:16 ,600 --> 00:30:17,710

Seems like that's fun.

668

30:17 ,760 --> 00:30:19,170

You get to depart you for a moment.

669

30:19 ,880 --> 00:30:23,000

Do you like to do things that are

far away from your natural place?

670

30:23 ,030 --> 00:30:24,620

You know, your center, if you will.

671

30:25 Playing Complex Characters

30:25 ,180 --> 00:30:31,080

I'm, I am, I'm nothing like that character

and I play a lot of bad dudes and I

672

30:31 ,080 --> 00:30:33,280

don't necessarily think them as bad.

673

30:33 ,435 --> 00:30:34,145

Bad dudes.

674

30:34 ,145 --> 00:30:38,195

I just feel like they're willing to go

that much further for what they want.

675

30:38 ,235 --> 00:30:40,665

And that, that's the kind

of way I like to play it.

676

30:41 ,085 --> 00:30:46,375

But it's so far from who I am in real

life that it's so enjoyable to play

677

30:46 ,675 --> 00:30:50,995

those type of characters because it's,

it, I don't feel like people are seeing

678

30:50 ,995 --> 00:30:56,325

the real me, you know, but I feel like

everybody has those tendencies, has

679

30:56 ,345 --> 00:31:02,765

those, has those, even those thoughts,

um, of the, of, of, uh, Uh, of evilness

680

31:02 ,765 --> 00:31:04,595

or how can people go that next level?

681

31:04 ,595 --> 00:31:10,745

And I look at it as I I'm in a position

to just play these type of really bad

682

31:10 ,745 --> 00:31:16,205

people and find the truth of these guys

and why they would go that much further.

683

31:16 ,205 --> 00:31:18,175

What, why does it resonate with me?

684

31:18 ,225 --> 00:31:21,345

And I have to find that for

it to be that kind of a guy.

685

31:21 ,805 --> 00:31:23,655

So it's so much more fun to play.

686

31:23 ,885 --> 00:31:28,274

And then the, the, the guys on set,

we're like, well, what if we, okay.

687

31:28 ,555 --> 00:31:33,975

Because, uh, Vanessa van Helsing, she

could, once she bites a vampire, they

688

31:33 ,995 --> 00:31:38,375

turn human, but they also remember,

they also remember all the things

689

31:38 ,375 --> 00:31:41,845

that they, all the terrible things

they did as a vampire, which is such

690

31:41 ,845 --> 00:31:45,095

a, like, just drowning in guilt.

691

31:45 ,545 --> 00:31:48,655

Like I say, it's still on my,

uh, it's still on my list of

692

31:48 ,655 --> 00:31:49,725

things that I haven't watched.

693

31:50 ,005 --> 00:31:51,775

So I, I just ruined my turn for you.

694

31:51 ,775 --> 00:31:53,385

I just ruined my character turn for you.

695

31:53 ,425 --> 00:31:53,945

No, no, no.

696

31:54 ,125 --> 00:31:57,155

Hey, you know, I'll be watching it

like with a bucket of popcorn going,

697

31:57 ,155 --> 00:31:58,065

I know what's about to happen.

698

31:58 ,305 --> 00:31:58,535

Yeah.

699

31:58 ,535 --> 00:31:58,845

Yeah.

700

31:59 Van Helsing and Snowpiercer

31:59 ,135 --> 00:32:01,075

But the turd, but that turned for me.

701

32:01 ,970 --> 00:32:04,540

Um, and made, made me human Julius.

702

32:04 ,620 --> 00:32:07,240

Then I got, then they allowed

me to go, okay, you know what?

703

32:07 ,240 --> 00:32:10,290

Why don't we give you human

Julius a boxing background?

704

32:10 ,290 --> 00:32:12,810

And that's how he was

discovered before it became.

705

32:13 ,020 --> 00:32:14,540

And then I'm a mama's boy.

706

32:14 ,540 --> 00:32:15,980

I'm a full blown mama's boy.

707

32:15 ,980 --> 00:32:17,530

So they made me a mama's boy in the show.

708

32:17 ,530 --> 00:32:21,030

Like they just were like, they

kept on writing for me to the point

709

32:21 ,030 --> 00:32:24,900

where I was, became a lead during

the five seasons of the show.

710

32:24 ,910 --> 00:32:28,350

So it was started out as a couple

episodes and it built into that.

711

32:28 ,350 --> 00:32:31,020

And at the same thing happened

with snow piercer that.

712

32:31 ,260 --> 00:32:35,120

Um, we just kind of enjoyed working

with each other and they saw how

713

32:35 ,120 --> 00:32:36,800

they could write my character bigger.

714

32:37 ,240 --> 00:32:40,800

Uh, and I'm extremely fortunate that

they gave me those opportunities.

715

32:40 Boxing and Acting

32:40 ,900 --> 00:32:42,550

Does anybody pick your brain on set?

716

32:42 ,550 --> 00:32:43,880

Like, Hey, you're a boxer.

717

32:44 ,220 --> 00:32:45,060

Can you give me some?

718

32:45 ,090 --> 00:32:46,360

Oh, all the time.

719

32:46 ,360 --> 00:32:49,430

I mean, before I started working,

I was teaching boxing too, just

720

32:49 ,430 --> 00:32:51,820

to make some money while I was in

Vancouver because, you know, I was

721

32:51 ,840 --> 00:32:55,070

just struggling just trying to make

rent more than anything, feed myself.

722

32:55 ,480 --> 00:32:57,660

So boxing was a huge help for me too.

723

32:57 ,985 --> 00:33:00,195

To, uh, get some sort of income.

724

33:00 ,215 --> 00:33:02,245

So that kind of helped, helped out a lot.

725

33:02 ,315 --> 00:33:05,705

Uh, now was there any boxer like in

the eighties or anybody like Sugar Ray

726

33:05 ,705 --> 00:33:07,795

Leonard, anybody like that for you?

727

33:07 ,795 --> 00:33:11,275

They were sort of the iconic boxer.

728

33:11 ,385 --> 00:33:12,355

Who was that bro?

729

33:13 Muhammad Ali and Personal Heroes

33:13 ,045 --> 00:33:15,545

Bro, bro, Muhammad Ali.

730

33:15 ,625 --> 00:33:16,205

Oh, of course.

731

33:16 ,215 --> 00:33:19,775

Yeah, I, I grew, here's,

I, I got so lucky.

732

33:19 ,785 --> 00:33:24,125

So I always had the thing in my brain

because I felt like Muhammad Ali

733

33:24 ,125 --> 00:33:27,525

was actually my dad, like the way he

lived his life and how he stood up

734

33:27 ,525 --> 00:33:31,645

for himself and how, you know, he gave

up three of his best years of boxing

735

33:31 ,645 --> 00:33:33,325

because he believed in something.

736

33:33 ,725 --> 00:33:37,730

Um, And, and he was in a time

where, you know, he wasn't

737

33:37 ,730 --> 00:33:39,250

supposed to be so outspoken.

738

33:39 ,440 --> 00:33:41,340

I just loved how he carried himself.

739

33:41 ,340 --> 00:33:44,610

He had a tongue in cheek thing

of, of joking with people,

740

33:44 ,620 --> 00:33:46,230

how he was with Howard Cosell.

741

33:46 ,230 --> 00:33:47,540

I loved all of that.

742

33:47 ,800 --> 00:33:49,390

And I loved all of that.

743

33:49 ,650 --> 00:33:53,660

And I, and, and then, and not only did

he talk so much and he, and he, and he

744

33:54 ,200 --> 00:33:58,560

antagonized people so much, but he was

in a sport where it wasn't a football

745

33:58 ,560 --> 00:34:01,995

game where it's like the other guy

blew you're in a, You're in the ring.

746

34:02 ,005 --> 00:34:03,775

So somebody is there to shut you up.

747

34:04 ,105 --> 00:34:06,365

And I love that he, that he

was so brave in that way.

748

34:06 ,365 --> 00:34:09,695

And I always said to myself, like,

if I ever, I never want to meet

749

34:09 ,695 --> 00:34:11,425

him just like through an airport.

750

34:11 ,535 --> 00:34:12,785

I don't want to have that experience.

751

34:13 ,230 --> 00:34:14,480

Yeah, I saw him at an airport.

752

34:14 ,490 --> 00:34:18,350

I I'd rather just it be my

experience, but it has to be special.

753

34:18 ,350 --> 00:34:21,680

And I got the opportunity to meet

the man where I actually, well,

754

34:21 ,680 --> 00:34:23,340

I mean, that's a whole story.

755

34:23 ,340 --> 00:34:26,100

I don't know if we have time for

that, but I got to meet the man in

756

34:26 ,100 --> 00:34:28,520

a one on one and I got to tell him.

757

34:28 ,835 --> 00:34:32,355

Basically what I told you was like,

you, you were actually my dad and

758

34:32 ,505 --> 00:34:36,795

I'm tears are rolling down my face

talking to the man and his Parkinson's

759

34:36 ,805 --> 00:34:41,285

was pretty thick then, but he, he, he

could, he was aware of what's going on.

760

34:41 ,305 --> 00:34:44,395

And I, and I, I looked at his

hands and I was like, that, that

761

34:44 ,685 --> 00:34:48,865

hand knocked out George Foreman,

that hand beat up Joe Frazier.

762

34:48 ,865 --> 00:34:51,555

And he picked it up slowly

and touched my chin with it.

763

34:51 ,555 --> 00:34:54,685

And I went like this and it was

one of the best moments of my life.

764

34:55 ,240 --> 00:34:58,600

It's something, something like that's

got to be magic, you know, that's,

765

34:58 ,630 --> 00:35:02,500

that's those kind of things are in my

mind, kind of what you live for, like

766

35:02 ,500 --> 00:35:05,930

the first, like I wasn't a big baseball

player, but I always, I remember

767

35:05 ,930 --> 00:35:10,830

the meeting Nolan Ryan actually in

the locker room when he was, Oh man.

768

35:11 ,875 --> 00:35:14,415

A friend of mine, I

abused my press passes.

769

35:14 ,415 --> 00:35:16,025

I had, I was, I was in high school.

770

35:16 ,025 --> 00:35:18,135

I was at 18, 18.

771

35:18 ,175 --> 00:35:20,505

We were in there and I was

like, and he's coming out of

772

35:20 ,515 --> 00:35:22,335

the shower just wearing a towel.

773

35:22 ,335 --> 00:35:24,265

I'm like, okay, is this

the time to meet him?

774

35:24 ,265 --> 00:35:25,865

I was like, well, I don't know

when there's a better time.

775

35:25 ,975 --> 00:35:26,605

Cause I'm right here.

776

35:26 ,605 --> 00:35:27,275

He's right there.

777

35:27 ,345 --> 00:35:28,095

You can't run.

778

35:29 ,015 --> 00:35:32,595

Um, but, but no, there's something

about that shaking his hand going

779

35:32 ,775 --> 00:35:34,515

this, this, this hand has thrown.

780

35:34 ,515 --> 00:35:35,115

Yes.

781

35:35 ,115 --> 00:35:35,744

Right.

782

35:35 ,895 --> 00:35:39,755

However many strikeouts or, you

know, um, seven, no hitters.

783

35:39 ,805 --> 00:35:40,395

Come on.

784

35:40 ,415 --> 00:35:43,855

For me, it was, you know, that's, and

plus, you know, it's Texas Rangers.

785

35:43 ,855 --> 00:35:45,495

Finally, my Rangers win a world series.

786

35:45 ,525 --> 00:35:45,885

Yeah.

787

35:46 Working with Anthony Hopkins

35:46 ,265 --> 00:35:51,085

Um, but the, um, but no, those kinds of

things, I think what you live for, you

788

35:51 ,085 --> 00:35:54,955

know, you gotta, you gotta let yourself

be just, you know, but not only that,

789

35:55 ,205 --> 00:36:01,025

it was like for acting wise, I got,

I got to work with Anthony Hopkins.

790

36:01 ,375 --> 00:36:05,535

Who was my number one and, and,

and, and that was, that was

791

36:05 ,535 --> 00:36:07,235

another surreal moment for me.

792

36:07 ,285 --> 00:36:08,395

What, what project was that?

793

36:08 ,485 --> 00:36:09,895

It was called Blackway.

794

36:10 ,395 --> 00:36:16,145

And, um, and I, uh, my, my buddy

producer, uh, Rick's, uh, Rick

795

36:16 ,155 --> 00:36:17,685

Dugdale, who's an amazing man.

796

36:18 ,115 --> 00:36:22,510

And, uh, And then one day he called

me up and he go during COVID.

797

36:22 ,790 --> 00:36:27,640

He was like, I was just on my way to,

uh, uh, Budapest to shoot this movie.

798

36:27 ,640 --> 00:36:29,820

Then COVID happened, but I

still want to be creative.

799

36:29 ,820 --> 00:36:32,210

So there's this, you want

to do like a zoom movie?

800

36:32 ,210 --> 00:36:33,520

Would you do a zoom movie?

801

36:33 ,520 --> 00:36:36,230

I said, yeah, man, it'll

keep me busy during COVID.

802

36:36 ,740 --> 00:36:38,600

And so we shot this cool movie.

803

36:38 ,730 --> 00:36:40,000

It's called zero contact.

804

36:40 ,000 --> 00:36:40,590

You can look it up.

805

36:40 ,630 --> 00:36:45,480

And then, um, and then he got

Hopkins on it and Hopkins.

806

36:45 ,735 --> 00:36:49,185

Was home with his niece and saying,

yeah, I got nothing else to do,

807

36:49 ,185 --> 00:36:52,685

so why don't I just hang out with

my niece and do some cool stuff.

808

36:53 ,105 --> 00:36:58,955

And now, uh, now I'm on a poster with

Anthony Hopkins and I, and I'm blown away

809

36:59 ,255 --> 00:37:01,747

that this is my life that I, and, and we.

810

37:02 ,645 --> 00:37:03,995

Have a pretty cool friendship.

811

37:03 ,995 --> 00:37:06,015

We really hit it off on set.

812

37:06 ,405 --> 00:37:08,845

Um, there's so many stories I

could tell you about him, man.

813

37:08 ,845 --> 00:37:10,725

But, uh, Ray Liotta was in that.

814

37:10 ,735 --> 00:37:11,065

Yeah.

815

37:11 ,065 --> 00:37:14,435

Ray, Ray, Ray Liotta was that,

and it was a great, great film.

816

37:14 ,475 --> 00:37:20,585

And my buddy Preston, uh, met his,

uh, now wife and mother of his kids,

817

37:20 ,585 --> 00:37:22,485

Julia Stiles on that, on that gig.

818

37:22 ,485 --> 00:37:24,935

So it was really, yeah.

819

37:24 ,935 --> 00:37:25,185

Yeah.

820

37:25 ,185 --> 00:37:27,265

We're really, really stoked about that.

821

37:27 ,265 --> 00:37:27,545

But.

822

37:27 ,770 --> 00:37:28,100

Yeah.

823

37:28 ,100 --> 00:37:33,890

So, and zero contact became something

where it became a, yeah, it just got to

824

37:33 ,900 --> 00:37:37,780

be on a poster and a, and a lead with

Anthony Hopkins on this, on this film.

825

37:37 ,780 --> 00:37:39,419

So, yeah.

826

37:39 ,420 --> 00:37:42,250

So how, what was it like when

you, when you showed that to

827

37:42 ,250 --> 00:37:46,120

your folks, you know, your area

folks still around or yeah, yeah.

828

37:46 ,120 --> 00:37:48,480

Everyone's still around and

they, they were blown away.

829

37:48 ,480 --> 00:37:50,680

But when Rick goes, Hey

man, check your email.

830

37:51 ,200 --> 00:37:56,030

Cause, uh, the poster just got

approved by, uh, Lionsgate.

831

37:56 ,505 --> 00:37:57,275

I went, Oh, cool.

832

37:57 ,275 --> 00:37:58,415

I'm super stoked to see this.

833

37:58 ,415 --> 00:37:58,985

And I see it.

834

37:58 ,985 --> 00:38:03,815

And it's like Chris brochure brochure,

who's also in the movie, the three of

835

38:03 ,815 --> 00:38:07,795

us in the poster for Anthony Hopkins.

836

38:07 ,795 --> 00:38:10,115

And I was just like, I can't

believe you did this, man.

837

38:10 ,115 --> 00:38:11,285

He goes, well, you're the lead.

838

38:11 ,285 --> 00:38:11,965

You deserve it.

839

38:11 ,985 --> 00:38:14,815

And I'm like, wow, that

is, that is too much, man.

840

38:14 ,815 --> 00:38:15,715

That is, that's awesome.

841

38:15 ,745 --> 00:38:19,195

I think people forget that when they

watch the films, like the people in it

842

38:19 ,195 --> 00:38:22,825

are, they're, they're, they're living

their goals or dreams or having moments.

843

38:22 ,825 --> 00:38:26,795

And, and I think everybody can identify

with that when you finally get a, When you

844

38:26 ,795 --> 00:38:28,865

get a big wind, it always is just like.

845

38:29 ,695 --> 00:38:30,835

It's such a great feeling.

846

38:30 ,995 --> 00:38:32,325

I never want to stop having that.

847

38:32 ,335 --> 00:38:37,725

I'm, I'm, I'm in my fifties here and, and

I just absolutely adore those moments.

848

38:37 ,725 --> 00:38:42,845

Even when I don't get a gig, but I went

for a ride on it, like I was close and

849

38:42 ,855 --> 00:38:45,705

that, and that journey is even fun.

850

38:45 ,705 --> 00:38:48,615

That journey is, is like no

one else has gone through this.

851

38:48 ,965 --> 00:38:49,425

Little thing.

852

38:49 ,435 --> 00:38:52,805

No, I didn't get the gig, but man,

was it a blast to almost get the gig.

853

38:52 ,885 --> 00:38:53,165

Yeah.

854

38:53 ,165 --> 00:38:53,525

Oh God.

855

38:53 ,525 --> 00:38:55,754

I was just talking, that's what

I was talking to Anya Savchich

856

38:55 ,755 --> 00:38:59,105

about, uh, uh, I'm sorry,

Savchich, I mispronounced her name.

857

38:59 ,565 --> 00:39:03,075

I was saying that, uh, you know,

she was in a, uh, Peter Farrelly,

858

39:03 ,195 --> 00:39:07,135

uh, you know, the TV show she was

in and the most recent movie she was

859

39:07 ,135 --> 00:39:08,630

in, Peter Farrelly, uh, uh, Right.

860

39:08 ,650 --> 00:39:09,170

Directed it.

861

39:09 ,650 --> 00:39:11,960

And I said, you know, I

had a call back with him.

862

39:11 ,970 --> 00:39:14,969

It was like a 10 minute audition,

you know, and he was, he was

863

39:14 ,970 --> 00:39:17,100

like, I don't think you're

really right for this character.

864

39:17 ,100 --> 00:39:17,740

I was like, you know what?

865

39:17 ,770 --> 00:39:18,390

I was just giddy.

866

39:18 ,390 --> 00:39:21,980

I was like, I get right audition for, you

know, one of the guys was putting together

867

39:21 ,990 --> 00:39:23,630

some of my favorite movies, you know?

868

39:23 ,760 --> 00:39:25,980

Uh, and he's like, but I, I want

you to go out in the hallway

869

39:25 ,980 --> 00:39:26,870

and I want you to work on this.

870

39:26 ,890 --> 00:39:29,112

I was like, Oh, he, he sees

me for another character.

871

39:29 ,112 --> 00:39:30,060

Now I didn't get it.

872

39:30 ,060 --> 00:39:30,129

Yeah.

873

39:30 ,510 --> 00:39:33,780

And it was for the, uh, the green

book and it won an Academy Award.

874

39:34 ,560 --> 00:39:37,800

And so, uh, the same thing

happened to Dallas buyers club.

875

39:37 ,800 --> 00:39:38,700

I got really close.

876

39:38 ,700 --> 00:39:42,690

So I figured, Hey, if you want to win an

Academy Award, get me in on a call back.

877

39:42 ,770 --> 00:39:44,540

Uh, and then don't cast me.

878

39:44 ,540 --> 00:39:45,310

You'll get an Academy Award.

879

39:47 ,000 --> 00:39:49,880

Look at my batting average going, okay,

well if I'm not in it, but it wins

880

39:50 ,130 --> 00:39:52,870

Academy Award, this is going to be a hit.

881

39:54 ,180 --> 00:39:56,290

One of the things I would, you

know, uh, your folks are telling

882

39:56 ,290 --> 00:39:57,900

me about, you're doing something.

883

39:58 ,190 --> 00:39:59,630

I would, I didn't have a chance to check.

884

40:00 Mental Health and Canned Water Initiative

40:00 ,030 --> 00:40:03,590

Deep into it and find out, but

they were telling me about how, uh,

885

40:03 ,590 --> 00:40:06,730

you're doing something with water

and it's mental health related.

886

40:06 ,780 --> 00:40:09,240

Now tell me a little bit about

what that is, which working.

887

40:09 ,240 --> 00:40:09,410

Yeah.

888

40:09 ,410 --> 00:40:13,070

It's a canned water company

that, um, I'm part owner of.

889

40:13 ,080 --> 00:40:16,750

And, um, it's been, it's

been so cool to work on it.

890

40:16 ,790 --> 00:40:18,890

Um, And it's out of Canada.

891

40:19 ,170 --> 00:40:20,030

It's called legend.

892

40:20 ,430 --> 00:40:25,740

We should be having it out in, uh,

in stores within the next six weeks.

893

40:25 ,990 --> 00:40:28,530

And very exciting because is

it, is it a, is it flavor?

894

40:28 ,690 --> 00:40:29,360

Is it carbonated?

895

40:29 ,360 --> 00:40:33,340

It's a canned spring water from the

mountains of Canada here in the Rockies.

896

40:33 ,430 --> 00:40:38,320

And, um, and we, we, for

instance, I'm always working on

897

40:38 ,360 --> 00:40:39,514

set and we have the plastic cup.

898

40:39 ,515 --> 00:40:42,775

bottles and we just want to get

rid of the single plastic use.

899

40:42 ,775 --> 00:40:48,115

And, um, and, and I love the idea of,

of possibly bringing it to as many

900

40:48 ,125 --> 00:40:53,015

sets as I can and obviously out, out in

the stores, but there's a, a component

901

40:53 ,025 --> 00:40:57,345

because all of us there, everyone has a

one degree of separation of, of a loved

902

40:57 ,345 --> 00:41:01,615

one going through depression, going

through possible suicide or suicidal

903

41:01 ,635 --> 00:41:04,325

tendencies and, and, and rehab and stuff.

904

41:04 ,325 --> 00:41:06,425

And, and I've lost some friends to it.

905

41:06 ,425 --> 00:41:09,605

I've, I've been dealing with a friend

that, um, You know, just really

906

41:09 ,625 --> 00:41:10,915

trying to get them in the rehab.

907

41:11 ,295 --> 00:41:13,185

So everyone's got their struggles.

908

41:13 ,185 --> 00:41:17,935

I've had, you know, a huge, uh, you know,

here and there bouts with depression.

909

41:18 ,425 --> 00:41:20,445

Um, everyone, everyone goes through it.

910

41:21 ,145 --> 00:41:24,655

So what we did was we

put a QR code on the can.

911

41:24 ,655 --> 00:41:26,345

It says legend supporting legends.

912

41:26 ,635 --> 00:41:32,255

It goes to our home page, but also it

goes to a, uh, crisis, suicide crisis,

913

41:32 ,255 --> 00:41:37,340

hotline, and a bunch of, um, links

to facilities all over Canada For

914

41:37 ,340 --> 00:41:39,040

rehab and trying to get you in there.

915

41:39 ,050 --> 00:41:43,430

And we're going to be working with

a few companies to, um, to also

916

41:43 ,460 --> 00:41:45,720

pay for people to go to, to rehab.

917

41:45 ,730 --> 00:41:48,970

Nowadays, you hear more and more people

talk about mental health and I do,

918

41:48 ,970 --> 00:41:50,430

we didn't have it back in the day.

919

41:50 ,510 --> 00:41:51,710

Like it was an embarrassing thing.

920

41:52 ,300 --> 00:41:55,230

And it was, it was thought

of as a, uh, taboo.

921

41:55 ,310 --> 00:41:58,180

Yeah, because you always have that,

there's that person in the family

922

41:58 ,190 --> 00:42:01,920

who, uh, it would always kind of be

explained away like, oh, they're going

923

42:01 ,920 --> 00:42:03,910

to just quirky or they got their issue.

924

42:03 ,920 --> 00:42:07,720

You know, even like ADHD, you know,

a lot of kids, very intelligent, had,

925

42:08 ,020 --> 00:42:11,180

you know, all kinds of opportunities,

but they were labeled in the

926

42:11 ,180 --> 00:42:13,350

eighties as being lazy or whatever.

927

42:13 ,440 --> 00:42:14,010

Yes.

928

42:14 ,270 --> 00:42:18,570

The whole idea, like you're a guy who's

a boxer, you know, physicality and, you

929

42:18 ,570 --> 00:42:22,745

know, You can, you can discuss this, I

think when you see, 'cause it used to

930

42:22 ,745 --> 00:42:24,965

be a weak, uh, a weakness thing, dude.

931

42:24 ,965 --> 00:42:27,725

And uh, yeah, it would be, it used

to be perceived as a weakness.

932

42:27 ,725 --> 00:42:27,905

Yeah.

933

42:27 ,910 --> 00:42:28,010

Yeah.

934

42:28 ,015 --> 00:42:31,355

Like you said, it would be explained away

and no one would really talk about it.

935

42:31 ,355 --> 00:42:36,185

And, you know, I, I, and I feel,

feel like, you know, a DHD was

936

42:36 ,185 --> 00:42:37,690

a part of my life because I did.

937

42:38 ,200 --> 00:42:41,350

What's considered lazy, but nothing

interested me in a certain way

938

42:41 ,570 --> 00:42:42,900

or things didn't interest me.

939

42:42 ,900 --> 00:42:46,560

And, and, and because I didn't want

to do them like that, I just had a

940

42:46 ,560 --> 00:42:50,400

component of ADHD, but the idea that.

941

42:50 ,855 --> 00:42:54,835

There is help out there and

people are more open to it.

942

42:54 ,855 --> 00:42:59,125

And I love the fact that like, we

don't put, there's no sad spin on it.

943

42:59 ,545 --> 00:43:01,135

I don't want to put a sad spin on it.

944

43:01 ,405 --> 00:43:04,435

The idea is, Hey man, there's

people out there and all you

945

43:04 ,435 --> 00:43:05,885

got to do is hit this QR code.

946

43:05 ,885 --> 00:43:09,555

If you need somebody to talk to, if

we can help one person, I am stoked.

947

43:09 ,865 --> 00:43:13,865

Even this conversation right now, talking

about it without the can, even in their

948

43:13 ,865 --> 00:43:17,905

hand is going to help hopefully help

someone, but I'm six, five and I, and

949

43:17 ,905 --> 00:43:19,725

people have this idea that, you know.

950

43:20 ,135 --> 00:43:23,215

You, somebody that can handle

themselves physically has it all made.

951

43:23 ,215 --> 00:43:27,755

But you know, mental issues hit everybody

and, and it's not a, it's, it's not

952

43:27 ,755 --> 00:43:32,095

something to brush under the rug and

it's something to talk about with love

953

43:32 ,585 --> 00:43:36,415

and, and hope and, and hopefully get

some help and not a judgment on it.

954

43:36 ,415 --> 00:43:39,985

And I, and I really hope, um,

I'm confident that we can,

955

43:40 ,005 --> 00:43:42,369

we can do some really great

things with this water company.

956

43:42 ,750 --> 00:43:46,580

And we grew up in a roughly the same

era, gin, you know, gin ex kids.

957

43:46 ,580 --> 00:43:50,070

And, you know, I had that

perspective, my kids, 18, 19, 21.

958

43:50 ,120 --> 00:43:53,630

And I'm kind of like going, when I

was their age, what was going on?

959

43:53 ,630 --> 00:43:54,280

What was I thinking?

960

43:54 ,280 --> 00:43:55,020

How was I feeling?

961

43:55 ,020 --> 00:43:56,050

You know, that kind of a thing.

962

43:56 ,230 --> 00:43:59,620

But, but even, even like when therapy

wasn't even a thing, it was the

963

43:59 ,620 --> 00:44:02,760

guidance counselor that you should

talk to, you know what I mean?

964

44:03 ,140 --> 00:44:05,150

Like that was, that

was, that was the trip.

965

44:05 ,160 --> 00:44:09,270

Cause I thinking about it growing up

and there was never a conversation.

966

44:09 ,270 --> 00:44:09,320

Yeah.

967

44:09 ,580 --> 00:44:13,380

Of let's go to therapy

or are you depressed?

968

44:13 ,400 --> 00:44:16,670

It's like, come on, pull up your

bootstraps and just do this thing.

969

44:17 ,210 --> 00:44:20,860

And so now we're in a place hope

that, yeah, I feel like now we're in

970

44:20 ,860 --> 00:44:25,780

a place where to talk about it with

love and, and, uh, and a positive

971

44:25 ,780 --> 00:44:30,130

energy that there's help out there,

um, And that everyone goes through it.

972

44:30 ,180 --> 00:44:31,430

You're not an Island.

973

44:31 ,480 --> 00:44:32,460

We all go through it.

974

44:32 ,460 --> 00:44:33,850

And that's the scariest thing.

975

44:33 ,850 --> 00:44:36,860

I think when people go through this is

that they think they're an Island and

976

44:36 ,870 --> 00:44:38,430

that there's no, no help out there.

977

44:38 ,500 --> 00:44:39,620

That's the nature of the beast.

978

44:39 ,620 --> 00:44:40,760

It makes you feel isolated.

979

44:40 ,920 --> 00:44:41,160

Yeah.

980

44:41 Upcoming Projects and Reflections

44:41 ,160 --> 00:44:44,360

No, um, but well, what are

you working on right now?

981

44:44 ,360 --> 00:44:46,680

Do you have anything

coming out anytime soon?

982

44:46 ,690 --> 00:44:48,784

Anything, uh, on film TV, anything?

983

44:48 ,935 --> 00:44:53,405

Yeah, I wish, oh man, I wish I could

talk about it, but I just shot a

984

44:53 ,405 --> 00:44:58,105

cool series and then, um, I have

fight rehearsal for a film that isn't

985

44:58 ,105 --> 00:45:04,525

announced yet and then I, uh, I go

to, uh, I go to another, I want to say

986

45:04 ,525 --> 00:45:06,285

the place, but I can't say the place.

987

45:08 ,225 --> 00:45:08,435

Yeah.

988

45:08 ,505 --> 00:45:10,835

There's some pesky NBA

is getting in the way.

989

45:10 ,845 --> 00:45:11,065

Yeah.

990

45:11 ,075 --> 00:45:11,465

Yeah.

991

45:11 ,685 --> 00:45:12,045

Yeah.

992

45:12 ,045 --> 00:45:12,305

Yeah.

993

45:12 ,305 --> 00:45:14,875

Um, there's some really,

really great, cool things.

994

45:14 ,885 --> 00:45:18,585

So I've got like four projects coming out

that I'm really excited about too, that

995

45:18 ,585 --> 00:45:20,525

I'm still, uh, that I'm still working on.

996

45:20 ,555 --> 00:45:21,595

So I'm, I'm excited.

997

45:21 ,615 --> 00:45:22,625

Very, very lucky.

998

45:29 The Seven Questions

45:29 ,435 --> 00:45:32,575

Before we get running, I always have my

seven questions I'd like to ask a little

999

45:32 ,575 --> 00:45:34,475

extra, get to know you some real fun.

Speaker:1000

45:34 ,485 --> 00:45:34,505

Yeah.

Speaker:1001

45:35 ,005 --> 00:45:37,195

Food guy started off talking about lunch.

Speaker:1002

45:37 ,195 --> 00:45:38,985

I always like to ask first question.

Speaker:1003

45:38 ,985 --> 00:45:41,155

What is your favorite comfort food?

Speaker:1004

45:41 ,285 --> 00:45:41,885

Sushi.

Speaker:1005

45:42 ,465 --> 00:45:43,055

Sushi.

Speaker:1006

45:43 ,215 --> 00:45:44,695

Any particular kind of sushi?

Speaker:1007

45:44 ,875 --> 00:45:46,265

It doesn't really matter.

Speaker:1008

45:46 ,265 --> 00:45:49,185

I mean, a spicy, a spicy tuna roll.

Speaker:1009

45:49 ,425 --> 00:45:54,439

Um, just just when I can get sashimi,

spicy tuna roll, California roll.

Speaker:1010

45:54 ,590 --> 00:45:58,750

Uh, like Unagi and Ebi and

like all, I love sushi.

Speaker:1011

45:58 ,760 --> 00:45:59,800

Sushi is the spot.

Speaker:1012

46:00 ,240 --> 00:46:04,310

My kids, we always set a table because

they're, you know, when I had, there

Speaker:1013

46:04 ,310 --> 00:46:06,730

are three of them with me, you can't

really sit at the bar cause you know,

Speaker:1014

46:06 ,730 --> 00:46:09,710

you want to talk to them and they're

ones all the way far down the bar, you

Speaker:1015

46:09 ,710 --> 00:46:13,190

know, but I do like when I can go take

one of them, sit at the bar, watch

Speaker:1016

46:13 ,200 --> 00:46:17,490

them make it, you know, cause I'm that

artisanal vibe that the chef's got.

Speaker:1017

46:17 ,930 --> 00:46:18,260

Sushi.

Speaker:1018

46:18 ,260 --> 00:46:19,030

I'm there with you.

Speaker:1019

46:19 ,030 --> 00:46:19,490

I'm there with you.

Speaker:1020

46:19 ,540 --> 00:46:20,810

Now, next question.

Speaker:1021

46:20 ,810 --> 00:46:21,900

If you're to sit down.

Speaker:1022

46:22 ,355 --> 00:46:27,245

At a table, have some coffee, talk

story, three people, living or not, who

Speaker:1023

46:27 ,245 --> 00:46:30,255

would those three people be that you

would like to spend a few hours with?

Speaker:1024

46:31 ,045 --> 00:46:32,035

Marlon Brando.

Speaker:1025

46:34 ,270 --> 00:46:36,040

Muhammad Ali, for sure.

Speaker:1026

46:37 ,500 --> 00:46:38,970

And, um,

Speaker:1027

46:41 ,160 --> 00:46:43,810

Genghis Khan, Genghis Khan.

Speaker:1028

46:44 ,810 --> 00:46:46,620

Genghis Khan was, you

know, he was prolific.

Speaker:1029

46:46 ,650 --> 00:46:50,230

I was like, you know, he's the reason

why I think, uh, I saw something

Speaker:1030

46:50 ,420 --> 00:46:53,280

that he's the reason why there's

point something, something percent.

Speaker:1031

46:55 ,175 --> 00:46:56,125

DNA test.

Speaker:1032

46:56 ,155 --> 00:46:57,705

Like you got a little Mongolian in you.

Speaker:1033

46:57 ,705 --> 00:46:58,045

It's like, how's that?

Speaker:1034

46:58 ,045 --> 00:46:58,495

That's right.

Speaker:1035

46:58 ,505 --> 00:46:58,935

That's right.

Speaker:1036

46:58 ,935 --> 00:46:59,735

It was prolific.

Speaker:1037

46:59 ,735 --> 00:47:00,365

We'll leave it at that.

Speaker:1038

47:00 ,865 --> 00:47:01,175

Yeah.

Speaker:1039

47:01 ,555 --> 00:47:05,435

Um, now going back to when you

were a young Aleks, who, uh,

Speaker:1040

47:05 ,445 --> 00:47:07,965

was your first celebrity crush?

Speaker:1041

47:09 ,305 --> 00:47:11,755

Oh, who is, Oh, uh, Phoebe Cates.

Speaker:1042

47:11 ,775 --> 00:47:12,325

Wow.

Speaker:1043

47:12 ,325 --> 00:47:12,815

Yeah.

Speaker:1044

47:13 ,585 --> 00:47:14,385

Phoebe Cates.

Speaker:1045

47:14 ,415 --> 00:47:16,235

Still the reason why I

don't like Kevin Kline.

Speaker:1046

47:16 ,665 --> 00:47:17,405

He took her from us.

Speaker:1047

47:17 ,465 --> 00:47:18,660

Yeah, he did.

Speaker:1048

47:18 ,660 --> 00:47:19,544

He did.

Speaker:1049

47:19 ,545 --> 00:47:21,960

But, uh, Phoebe Cates, man.

Speaker:1050

47:22 ,460 --> 00:47:24,660

Uh, uh, what, what, what, what was it?

Speaker:1051

47:24 ,660 --> 00:47:27,180

Well, uh, what was the movie?

Speaker:1052

47:27 ,210 --> 00:47:31,970

What was the movie when she comes out

of the, uh, fast times at Richmond high?

Speaker:1053

47:31 ,990 --> 00:47:32,290

Yes.

Speaker:1054

47:32 ,290 --> 00:47:32,560

Yes.

Speaker:1055

47:32 ,700 --> 00:47:33,430

That movie.

Speaker:1056

47:33 ,470 --> 00:47:36,470

I mean, how many amazing careers

did that movie spawn or how many

Speaker:1057

47:36 ,470 --> 00:47:37,760

people were in that movie if it just.

Speaker:1058

47:38 ,740 --> 00:47:42,730

She retired from acting to just, you

know, to not to just be a parent.

Speaker:1059

47:42 ,730 --> 00:47:44,820

Cause that's, that's

awesome to be a parent.

Speaker:1060

47:44 ,830 --> 00:47:45,330

Don't get me wrong.

Speaker:1061

47:45 ,680 --> 00:47:48,160

But I'm like, I still want, I mean,

come on, I'm a kid of the eighties,

Speaker:1062

47:48 ,160 --> 00:47:49,220

still wanted to see her on film.

Speaker:1063

47:49 ,250 --> 00:47:49,700

Yes.

Speaker:1064

47:49 ,820 --> 00:47:50,330

Phoebe Cates.

Speaker:1065

47:51 ,290 --> 00:47:54,630

Uh, that's, that's, yeah, not now

you got me thinking of Phoebe Cates.

Speaker:1066

47:55 ,010 --> 00:47:56,010

Um, no.

Speaker:1067

47:56 ,080 --> 00:48:00,400

Now, if you're going to be forced to

live on an island now, let me not forced,

Speaker:1068

48:00 ,540 --> 00:48:01,630

but you're going to live on an island.

Speaker:1069

48:01 ,640 --> 00:48:04,330

They're actually very like a resort,

but it doesn't have internet,

Speaker:1070

48:04 ,800 --> 00:48:06,750

um, and no streaming or nothing.

Speaker:1071

48:06 ,970 --> 00:48:10,660

So you got to bring one movie

on DVD, one album on CD.

Speaker:1072

48:10 ,700 --> 00:48:11,870

What's the album?

Speaker:1073

48:12 ,070 --> 00:48:13,360

What is the movie you're going to bring?

Speaker:1074

48:14 ,170 --> 00:48:15,770

You're going to live on

the island for a year.

Speaker:1075

48:17 ,380 --> 00:48:22,260

Rocky, the first Rocky and the album.

Speaker:1076

48:22 ,730 --> 00:48:24,690

I think, um,

Speaker:1077

48:27 ,100 --> 00:48:32,610

the album, I think would have to be

number of the beast by Iron Maiden.

Speaker:1078

48:33 ,230 --> 00:48:33,700

Okay.

Speaker:1079

48:33 ,750 --> 00:48:34,260

Okay.

Speaker:1080

48:34 ,440 --> 00:48:34,680

Yeah.

Speaker:1081

48:34 ,860 --> 00:48:36,340

I was figuring it was gonna be a Rocky.

Speaker:1082

48:36 ,640 --> 00:48:38,890

I was assuming if it's gonna be

Rocky it's gotta be the first one.

Speaker:1083

48:38 ,890 --> 00:48:39,900

It's gotta be the first one.

Speaker:1084

48:40 ,350 --> 00:48:43,270

Nothing against the sequels but

the first one was the, was the one.

Speaker:1085

48:43 ,270 --> 00:48:43,650

Genesis.

Speaker:1086

48:43 ,650 --> 00:48:44,010

Yeah.

Speaker:1087

48:44 ,570 --> 00:48:47,710

Now if you were to say, uh, next

question, your definition from the

Speaker:1088

48:47 ,720 --> 00:48:51,850

time you get up to the time you go to

sleep, your definition of a perfect

Speaker:1089

48:51 ,870 --> 00:48:53,800

day, uh, what would that be for you?

Speaker:1090

48:54 ,480 --> 00:48:56,230

Like the component parts of that day.

Speaker:1091

48:58 ,420 --> 00:49:06,060

It's gotta be a beautiful, sunny, hot

day, chill coffee in the morning, uh,

Speaker:1092

49:06 ,150 --> 00:49:12,960

running with my dog, whose name is

Brando, uh, running Brando a little.

Speaker:1093

49:12 ,960 --> 00:49:13,950

What kind of dog you got?

Speaker:1094

49:14 ,000 --> 00:49:15,250

He's a double doodle.

Speaker:1095

49:15 ,360 --> 00:49:19,930

He's a, he's a Bernice mountain dog doodle

mixed with a Australian shepherd doodle.

Speaker:1096

49:19 ,930 --> 00:49:22,070

He's the coolest dude ever.

Speaker:1097

49:22 ,640 --> 00:49:24,350

Um, and, uh,

Speaker:1098

49:26 ,480 --> 00:49:31,060

Being with the one that I love

and enjoying, you know, our times

Speaker:1099

49:31 ,060 --> 00:49:37,820

together and, and, and doing outdoor

stuff and then finishing off and

Speaker:1100

49:37 ,850 --> 00:49:41,380

it's legal in BC, finishing off with

a little joint, watching a movie.

Speaker:1101

49:41 ,660 --> 00:49:43,120

That sounds like a perfect day to me.

Speaker:1102

49:43 ,550 --> 00:49:44,850

Now, last couple of questions.

Speaker:1103

49:44 ,870 --> 00:49:49,435

Uh, If you weren't doing this, uh, for a

living, you weren't finding joy in doing

Speaker:1104

49:49 ,435 --> 00:49:53,035

this, uh, I mean, excuse me, if you were,

this wasn't part of your life, right?

Speaker:1105

49:53 ,235 --> 00:49:55,645

What would you find joy

in doing besides this?

Speaker:1106

49:57 ,275 --> 00:49:59,875

Man, what a, what a great question.

Speaker:1107

50:00 ,295 --> 00:50:04,025

It's gotta be, I, I just love

working with people so much.

Speaker:1108

50:04 ,085 --> 00:50:08,315

And I, I love a little bit of a

stature in that, in that position,

Speaker:1109

50:08 ,325 --> 00:50:13,315

because I've, when I was first either

in my band or, or even when people

Speaker:1110

50:13 ,315 --> 00:50:14,430

around me, I hate seeing bullies.

Speaker:1111

50:14 ,430 --> 00:50:15,475

I hate seeing bullies.

Speaker:1112

50:15 ,780 --> 00:50:16,980

Bullies in high position.

Speaker:1113

50:17 ,510 --> 00:50:21,370

And so I love being in a, in a high

position and welcoming everybody.

Speaker:1114

50:21 ,370 --> 00:50:26,220

And like being on Van Helsing, every

actor that came through, even the,

Speaker:1115

50:26 ,400 --> 00:50:30,980

the, the, the crew, I love talking

to him, saying good morning to

Speaker:1116

50:30 ,980 --> 00:50:33,510

him, making, making them feel like.

Speaker:1117

50:33 ,695 --> 00:50:36,115

They're enjoying being at work too.

Speaker:1118

50:36 ,115 --> 00:50:39,075

So I always feel like everyone does

such a better job when they know

Speaker:1119

50:39 ,405 --> 00:50:41,195

somebody that's higher up sees them.

Speaker:1120

50:41 ,495 --> 00:50:43,395

Cause I know that's how it felt for me.

Speaker:1121

50:43 ,735 --> 00:50:48,655

So that type of position in that type

of thing, I like working with people.

Speaker:1122

50:48 ,775 --> 00:50:50,465

No, I know exactly what

you're talking about.

Speaker:1123

50:50 ,465 --> 00:50:53,165

I don't, I don't ever

like feeling I'm elevated.

Speaker:1124

50:53 ,165 --> 00:50:55,245

You know, I like learning,

putting yourself.

Speaker:1125

50:55 ,560 --> 00:50:57,860

Everybody's on the same

level kind of experience.

Speaker:1126

50:57 ,910 --> 00:50:58,320

Yeah.

Speaker:1127

50:58 ,370 --> 00:50:58,600

Yeah.

Speaker:1128

50:58 ,600 --> 00:51:00,150

And you're talking, yeah, I love that.

Speaker:1129

51:00 ,150 --> 00:51:00,620

I love that.

Speaker:1130

51:00 ,970 --> 00:51:04,870

But the last question I got for you,

um, you're to jump in that DeLorean.

Speaker:1131

51:04 ,910 --> 00:51:08,690

You're going to go back in time, go

back to when you're 16 years old and

Speaker:1132

51:08 ,690 --> 00:51:11,890

you've got a piece of advice, uh,

you want to give yourself, whether

Speaker:1133

51:11 ,900 --> 00:51:15,440

you're wanting to make that moment

a little bit better for yourself or

Speaker:1134

51:15 ,440 --> 00:51:17,060

set yourself up on a different path.

Speaker:1135

51:17 ,160 --> 00:51:18,770

What's that piece of advice you've got?

Speaker:1136

51:19 ,650 --> 00:51:25,280

Um, I think I would have

loved to have been told.

Speaker:1137

51:27 ,035 --> 00:51:28,445

It's okay to screw up.

Speaker:1138

51:30 ,345 --> 00:51:34,955

You're not an island and Screwing

up doesn't mean it's bad.

Speaker:1139

51:36 ,785 --> 00:51:38,345

That's where we do the

most learning, right?

Speaker:1140

51:38 ,805 --> 00:51:43,565

Yeah Yeah, but when like I grew up

where it wasn't it wasn't about learning

Speaker:1141

51:43 ,565 --> 00:51:47,725

It's like if you don't if you didn't

get it, right, then you should get the

Speaker:1142

51:47 ,725 --> 00:51:52,625

hell out of here type thing So I would

have loved, I would have loved, uh, me

Speaker:1143

51:52 ,635 --> 00:51:54,275

nurtured in those aspects a little bit.

Speaker:1144

51:54 ,855 --> 00:51:55,985

You're a young teenager.

Speaker:1145

51:55 ,985 --> 00:51:59,205

It's kind of like, you think

everything is so dramatic and life,

Speaker:1146

51:59 ,225 --> 00:52:03,315

you know, life altering and you know,

just kind of chill and things have

Speaker:1147

52:03 ,315 --> 00:52:04,565

a way of working themselves out.

Speaker:1148

52:04 ,595 --> 00:52:07,935

It's weird because you literally sit

there going, there's a part of you that

Speaker:1149

52:07 ,935 --> 00:52:11,585

feel like you're invincible when you're

in your twenties, like nothing, you don't

Speaker:1150

52:11 ,595 --> 00:52:13,505

think about the future, you're invincible.

Speaker:1151

52:13 ,875 --> 00:52:17,305

And then there's the other part of

you going, why do I not know who I am?

Speaker:1152

52:17 ,305 --> 00:52:18,855

Why do I feel like I'm floating?

Speaker:1153

52:19 ,335 --> 00:52:23,185

Like, and you just have, you have

to go through all those trials and

Speaker:1154

52:23 ,215 --> 00:52:25,045

tribulations to find out who you are.

Speaker:1155

52:25 ,435 --> 00:52:29,285

So having, uh, you know, I, I always,

I like the idea of mentors too.

Speaker:1156

52:29 ,285 --> 00:52:31,705

And I think they're, oh, indeed, indeed.

Speaker:1157

52:32 ,445 --> 00:52:34,765

Well, Matt, my friend, I

appreciate you taking the time out.

Speaker:1158

52:34 ,765 --> 00:52:37,125

I know you're busy and, uh,

just sitting down chatting.

Speaker:1159

52:37 ,125 --> 00:52:39,555

I always love talking

stories, so I appreciate it.

Speaker:1160

52:39 ,975 --> 00:52:41,995

Hopefully we'll have a chance to

catch up down the line, my friend.

Speaker:1161

52:42 ,355 --> 00:52:43,445

I would love that Marc.

Speaker:1162

52:43 ,465 --> 00:52:45,785

Thanks for taking the

time and having me on man

Speaker:1163

52:47 ,795 --> 00:52:52,535

All right, there you go Aleks Paunovic,

uh, enjoy the conversation just cool

Speaker:1164

52:52 ,545 --> 00:52:55,575

to speak with anybody who's been a

Speaker:1165

52:55 ,585 --> 00:53:00,215

boxer, uh and a heavy metal musician

Cool, dude, really enjoyed it.
