00:02 ,890 --> 00:00:03,480

What a character.

4

00:03 ,490 --> 00:00:05,370

He just started calling me

Murph, which was awesome.

5

00:05 ,490 --> 00:00:08,730

Signed a book for me that

said, uh, Murph, let's make two

6

00:08 ,730 --> 00:00:11,090

plus two equal five, not four.

7

00:11 ,120 --> 00:00:11,930

Cause that's magic.

8

00:11 ,930 --> 00:00:12,990

And that's us, baby.

9

00:14 ,040 --> 00:00:14,840

Welcome to

10

00:14 ,840 --> 00:00:15,680

00:19 ,499 --> 00:00:21,839

Back again, another episode of Story.

14

00:21 ,890 --> 00:00:22,900

and craft.

15

00:23 ,100 --> 00:00:24,370

Thank you for stopping by.

16

00:24 ,370 --> 00:00:25,900

Appreciate it greatly.

17

00:26 ,030 --> 00:00:29,610

We got a great conversation

today with director Laura Murphy.

18

00:29 ,610 --> 00:00:33,960

The new movie in theaters right

now is called F. Mary Kill.

19

00:34 ,059 --> 00:00:36,939

It's with Lucy Hale and Virginia Gardner.

20

00:37 ,229 --> 00:00:40,539

Virginia Gardner actually going to be

on the show Friday, so it's kind of F.

21

00:40 ,570 --> 00:00:42,870

Mary Kill Week on story and craft.

22

00:43 ,170 --> 00:00:44,810

Uh, really enjoyed the conversation.

23

00:44 ,935 --> 00:00:49,415

We covered her career from doing

commercials to working with Awkwafina

24

00:49 ,445 --> 00:00:51,275

on her show on Comedy Central.

25

00:51 ,275 --> 00:00:54,865

Also worked with Eliza Schlesinger

on her Netflix show as well as

26

00:54 ,865 --> 00:00:56,804

John Oliver on This Week Tonight.

27

00:57 ,035 --> 00:01:00,824

Done a lot of cool stuff and she's

got a cool comedy out right now.

28

01:01 ,115 --> 00:01:03,514

Hey, do me a favor, pop on

over to Story and Craft.

29

01:03 ,515 --> 00:01:04,344

pod.

30

01:04 ,345 --> 00:01:06,355

com slash rate.

31

01:06 ,745 --> 00:01:10,615

Uh, just jump on over,

leave a review, leave stars.

32

01:10 ,615 --> 00:01:14,565

If you would really helps folks to

find the show and enjoy the mischief

01:14 ,565 --> 00:01:18,104

34

01:18 ,104 --> 00:01:22,065

on your podcast app, that way you get

notified every time there's new episode.

35

01:22 ,185 --> 00:01:22,505

Okay.

36

01:22 ,505 --> 00:01:23,984

So let's jump right into it.

37

01:24 ,274 --> 00:01:28,624

Uh, today it's Laura Murphy day,

right here on story and craft.

38

01:30 Laura Murphy's Early Career

01:30 ,294 --> 00:01:31,359

Are you in LA?

39

01:31 ,520 --> 00:01:31,900

Laura Murphy: I am.

40

01:31 ,950 --> 00:01:34,030

I'm in, uh, Redondo Beach.

41

01:34 ,170 --> 00:01:37,490

I just spoke with, uh, just a

few days ago, Virginia Gardner,

42

01:37 ,500 --> 00:01:38,610

or Jenny, Jenny Gardner.

43

01:38 ,630 --> 00:01:39,210

Oh, really?

44

01:39 ,490 --> 00:01:39,790

Oh, nice.

45

01:39 ,900 --> 00:01:43,689

She was, she was a hoot, and I really,

uh, enjoyed checking out the film.

46

01:43 ,740 --> 00:01:47,159

Now, are you from the L. A. area,

or did you head that way for work?

47

01:47 ,159 --> 00:01:49,854

Are you originally from somewhere,

somewhere, somewhere else?

48

01:50 ,145 --> 00:01:51,445

Laura Murphy: I did

head this way for work.

49

01:51 ,445 --> 00:01:53,265

I am originally from New York.

50

01:53 ,355 --> 00:01:57,675

Uh, I grew up in, upstate, like two

hours north of the city, in this small

51

01:57 ,675 --> 00:02:02,805

town called Rhinebeck, which was like

a very Norman Rockwell cute little town

52

02:02 ,805 --> 00:02:04,015

that not a lot of people had heard of.

53

02:04 ,275 --> 00:02:09,055

And then now, uh, Paul Rudd

owns a candy store there.

54

02:09 ,135 --> 00:02:11,185

Uh, I think Chelsea

Clinton got married there.

55

02:11 ,195 --> 00:02:13,785

Now it's like a very well

known upstate New York town.

56

02:14 ,115 --> 00:02:16,925

Um, so that's where I grew up.

57

02:16 ,925 --> 00:02:18,395

My parents were both from the city.

58

02:18 ,754 --> 00:02:22,714

And then I went to college

further upstate in Albany.

59

02:23 ,114 --> 00:02:27,084

And then it's funny cause upstate

New York, like where upstate

60

02:27 ,104 --> 00:02:29,844

is depends on where you are

when you're talking about it.

61

02:29 ,894 --> 00:02:34,574

So like when you're in the city, you know,

Croton is considered upstate New York.

62

02:34 ,585 --> 00:02:37,925

If you're in where I grew up, Albany

is considered upstate New York.

63

02:37 ,925 --> 00:02:39,995

But if you're from Rochester,

you'd be like mad that

64

02:39 ,995 --> 00:02:41,335

anybody called Brian Beckham.

65

02:44 ,355 --> 00:02:48,100

Yeah, I got a good friend of mine who

lives in, um, Uh, near, uh, Buffalo.

66

02:48 ,170 --> 00:02:50,280

Uh, I can't even tell you exactly.

67

02:50 ,290 --> 00:02:54,890

She, she lives even west of Buffalo

and she said that it's actually

68

02:55 ,209 --> 00:02:57,290

exactly due east is Boston.

69

02:57 ,390 --> 00:02:58,819

Like she kept trying to eat it.

70

02:58 ,989 --> 00:02:59,139

Yes.

71

02:59 ,209 --> 00:03:01,230

And, uh, she was telling me,

Oh yeah, you gotta tell me the

72

03:01 ,230 --> 00:03:02,640

temperatures and stuff like that.

73

03:02 ,640 --> 00:03:04,239

And I'm down here on, you

know, next to the beach.

74

03:04 ,239 --> 00:03:05,849

I'm like, no, no, you can keep that.

75

03:05 ,900 --> 00:03:09,000

That's I'm not, I'm

not a cold weather guy.

76

03:09 ,450 --> 00:03:09,700

That's

77

03:09 ,790 --> 00:03:10,500

Laura Murphy: what happened.

78

03:10 ,570 --> 00:03:13,030

I went to college in Albany

where it was freezing and gray.

79

03:13 ,030 --> 00:03:13,820

And then I moved to this.

80

03:14 ,150 --> 00:03:17,420

I was in the city, uh, New York

for, uh, for quite a long time.

81

03:17 ,420 --> 00:03:20,510

And then I just was like, why

am I, why am I having winters?

82

03:20 ,520 --> 00:03:23,710

When there's a place where you don't

have to have winters, what am I doing?

83

03:23 ,830 --> 00:03:26,720

And then moved back to LA

or moved to LA after that.

84

03:27 ,019 --> 00:03:30,639

And I've been back to New York a bunch

for jobs, you know, some extended

85

03:30 ,639 --> 00:03:35,150

stays, and I'm still like, Nope, I

checked again, don't like winter.

86

03:35 ,150 --> 00:03:36,260

Still, I love fall.

87

03:36 ,765 --> 00:03:40,455

Falls beautiful, but you just got to

get out right before you see, that's the

88

03:40 ,455 --> 00:03:40,935

key right there.

89

03:40 ,935 --> 00:03:43,005

You gotta, you gotta let, you

gotta hit right, right in the

90

03:43 ,005 --> 00:03:44,035

spot that feels good for you.

91

03:44 ,045 --> 00:03:47,195

Like when I was in Southern California, I,

I, everybody thinks, you know, summertime

92

03:47 ,195 --> 00:03:50,624

is that June gloom that happens, you

know, it's like, it's like, yeah, it's

93

03:50 ,624 --> 00:03:52,225

not really my favorite time to be here.

94

03:52 ,544 --> 00:03:58,285

Um, but, uh, but I will say I'm at

a place called South Padre Island.

95

03:58 ,345 --> 00:04:01,965

Very tip of Texas, about 30

miles from Mexico, basically.

96

04:03 ,360 --> 00:04:06,900

Now were you, when you were in nominee,

were you studying, was this was, uh,

97

04:06 ,930 --> 00:04:09,120

filmmaking or writing or anything?

98

04:09 ,150 --> 00:04:09,240

No.

99

04:09 ,240 --> 00:04:10,200

Part of your jam

100

04:10 ,500 --> 00:04:14,850

Laura Murphy: writing was, uh, writing

was always on my radar from young age.

101

04:14 ,940 --> 00:04:19,470

I, I, I don't think, it's not that I was

like, oh, I don't wanna be a director.

102

04:19 ,470 --> 00:04:24,030

I just don't think that occurred to me as

a job people could do in retrospect, like.

103

04:24 ,400 --> 00:04:28,820

I definitely made my fifth grade class

friends stay in and act, be in a play that

104

04:28 ,820 --> 00:04:32,390

I wrote and at the time was directing,

but didn't realize directing was a thing,

105

04:32 ,430 --> 00:04:34,500

but I was always passionate about writing.

106

04:34 ,559 --> 00:04:35,590

I loved writing.

107

04:35 ,649 --> 00:04:36,969

It was like a creative outlet.

108

04:37 ,250 --> 00:04:41,974

It was something I wanted to do,

but the Career wise, I was like,

109

04:41 ,974 --> 00:04:45,825

oh, they're, journalism then, that's

a job where you get paid to write.

110

04:45 ,864 --> 00:04:49,064

I don't think I, like, the

creative writing, nobody had, I

111

04:49 ,064 --> 00:04:50,275

didn't know what a screenplay was.

112

04:50 ,284 --> 00:04:55,744

Even though I absorbed, I consumed so much

media and movies as a kid, and TV, it just

113

04:55 ,744 --> 00:04:58,565

never occurred to me that, like, you could

write a movie and then direct a movie.

114

04:58 ,565 --> 00:04:59,635

I was more, so.

115

05:00 ,344 --> 00:05:03,435

the level headedness in me was like,

oh, go to school for journalism.

116

05:03 ,775 --> 00:05:06,614

And so I went to Albany for

communication and journalism.

117

05:07 ,205 --> 00:05:11,505

I did minor in theater though,

so I got like a little taste

118

05:11 ,544 --> 00:05:15,495

of acting and behind the scenes

stuff and did some writing there.

119

05:15 ,934 --> 00:05:21,395

And that got me in, I mean, that kind

of opened the door to, oh, there is

120

05:21 ,395 --> 00:05:24,335

like a world of creativity and writing.

121

05:24 ,739 --> 00:05:32,010

Um, but then I graduated and kind of

took a job at a PR firm as an assistant.

122

05:32 Journey to MTV and Promos

05:32 ,010 --> 00:05:34,039

I was like kind of floating around

New York figuring out what I want to

123

05:34 ,039 --> 00:05:36,200

do and I lucked into a job at MTV.

124

05:36 ,669 --> 00:05:41,239

It was like truly some guy working me

at the PR place was like, my cousin's

125

05:41 ,240 --> 00:05:44,510

hiring someone at MTV and you don't seem

like you fit in at this PR place, but

126

05:44 ,510 --> 00:05:46,050

you seem like you might fit in at MTV.

127

05:46 ,485 --> 00:05:49,255

So why don't you go

interview for this job?

128

05:49 ,285 --> 00:05:52,495

And, uh, that's how I started off writing.

129

05:52 ,495 --> 00:05:55,594

I worked in the consumer

products and off air department.

130

05:55 ,604 --> 00:05:59,595

So it was like kind of

the print ads for, okay.

131

06:00 ,055 --> 00:06:03,275

And like the print world and the

billboards and like all the off

132

06:03 ,275 --> 00:06:07,104

air content that was creative and

kind of worked my way into that.

133

06:07 ,335 --> 00:06:10,844

But we shared a floor with the on air

promos people who made all the commercials

134

06:10 ,844 --> 00:06:15,194

for MTV that aired on MTV, which at

that time, like early 2000s was like,

135

06:15 ,315 --> 00:06:19,384

Didn't, didn't I see somewhere that

maybe I'm imagining this, which is

136

06:19 ,655 --> 00:06:24,875

entirely possible, but that you're,

you're involved in the promos, uh, promo.

137

06:25 ,015 --> 00:06:25,484

Okay.

138

06:25 ,495 --> 00:06:26,145

Laura Murphy: Exactly.

139

06:26 ,320 --> 00:06:29,240

So that's how I kind of got into

promos as we shared a floor with them.

140

06:29 ,240 --> 00:06:32,130

And I would just hang out with those guys

all the time in the promos department.

141

06:32 ,130 --> 00:06:34,680

And then I was finally like, Hey,

can I come write stuff for you guys?

142

06:35 ,040 --> 00:06:35,950

And they were like, sure.

143

06:36 ,370 --> 00:06:38,629

Another part of what I do,

I do promo voice stuff.

144

06:38 ,660 --> 00:06:42,059

That's a very fast paced where you were,

you were what they call a predator.

145

06:42 ,219 --> 00:06:43,279

I guess the promo.

146

06:43 ,280 --> 00:06:44,214

That's

147

06:44 ,214 --> 00:06:45,750

Laura Murphy: what they are now.

148

06:45 ,760 --> 00:06:49,090

When I started out, you could

be a writer and producer.

149

06:49 ,344 --> 00:06:52,844

Or you could be, and like, you

could produce promos and write

150

06:52 ,844 --> 00:06:55,585

them, or you could direct them

and the editors were separate.

151

06:55 ,585 --> 00:06:58,135

Now they've merged it all

into like one position.

152

06:58 ,414 --> 00:07:01,255

Back then it was like two positions, now

it's merged into one, which is a lot.

153

07:01 ,504 --> 00:07:05,034

Um, but also back then they had

really good budgets, and it was

154

07:05 ,034 --> 00:07:06,484

kind of like paid film school.

155

07:06 ,494 --> 00:07:09,374

Like they would just throw you on

a set, and you would sink or swim,

156

07:09 ,374 --> 00:07:11,034

and they had good budgets, like.

157

07:11 ,604 --> 00:07:15,125

DPs, great DPs would want to work

on them because they were fun,

158

07:15 ,125 --> 00:07:17,815

they were quick turnaround, they

often had celebrity talent in them.

159

07:18 ,184 --> 00:07:22,604

And so it was really great boot

camp, like I was on set a lot as a

160

07:22 ,604 --> 00:07:27,264

writer watching other people direct

and realizing, Oh, this didn't

161

07:27 ,265 --> 00:07:29,075

look like I pictured it in my mind.

162

07:29 ,075 --> 00:07:31,495

And like, I watched a lot of people

very successfully direct a lot of

163

07:31 ,565 --> 00:07:33,395

watched a lot of people not do so great.

164

07:33 ,395 --> 00:07:37,905

And that was kind of the way I learned

about like set etiquette and how a set

165

07:37 ,974 --> 00:07:39,964

moves and what all the positions are and.

166

07:40 ,260 --> 00:07:44,009

So I was very fortunate to To kind

of get that experience because

167

07:44 ,009 --> 00:07:45,189

I didn't go to film school.

168

07:45 ,379 --> 00:07:48,549

I was trying to tell my kids about

how when I worked in radio, once

169

07:48 ,549 --> 00:07:50,539

upon a time, MTV was the tastemaker.

170

07:50 ,749 --> 00:07:52,129

It was part of your prep in the day.

171

07:52 ,129 --> 00:07:53,939

You got to check out

what's happening on MTV.

172

07:53 ,989 --> 00:07:57,219

You know, back when trends would

start out West to start traveling

173

07:57 ,219 --> 00:08:01,109

East, you know, and, uh, you know,

the fashion and all that stuff.

174

08:01 ,159 --> 00:08:02,369

Now it all happens everywhere.

175

08:02 ,369 --> 00:08:03,599

All at once it seems like.

176

08:03 ,674 --> 00:08:06,504

You know, can't overstate

how important MTV was.

177

08:06 ,514 --> 00:08:10,484

So like, that was like the epicenter of

everything culturally seemed at least for

178

08:10 ,494 --> 00:08:14,504

that age range, you know, the younger set,

that is that kind of where you first took

179

08:14 ,504 --> 00:08:15,974

your bite out of doing some directing.

180

08:16 Directing and Comedy

08:16 ,104 --> 00:08:16,564

Laura Murphy: Yup.

181

08:16 ,704 --> 00:08:18,014

I basically same thing.

182

08:18 ,014 --> 00:08:19,844

Just talked him into letting me try it.

183

08:20 ,169 --> 00:08:25,520

And, uh, and then started directing that

way and, and what was cool is like it

184

08:25 ,520 --> 00:08:29,590

was the era of like Jackass and also

TRL, which is a very interesting time

185

08:29 ,590 --> 00:08:33,649

at MTV because it was kind of serving

multiple audiences for a long time.

186

08:33 ,649 --> 00:08:36,940

It had just been like 18 to 24 year

old males, but then TRL brought this

187

08:36 ,940 --> 00:08:38,909

like younger female core audience.

188

08:38 ,909 --> 00:08:41,600

So it was kind of a fun

time to be making stuff.

189

08:41 ,630 --> 00:08:43,090

And, and there was.

190

08:44 ,145 --> 00:08:48,515

Also a lot of working with, you know,

high profile talent who were just fun

191

08:48 ,545 --> 00:08:52,975

were willing to listen to a 22 year old

tell them what to do because it was MTV.

192

08:52 ,985 --> 00:08:56,425

So like, I did a promo with Tom Cruise

and like Dave Chappelle and I was

193

08:56 ,705 --> 00:09:02,284

kind of exposed to all these celebrity

talent that, and like in, in a lot

194

09:02 ,285 --> 00:09:04,714

of cases they were actors that were

very well established that hadn't

195

09:04 ,714 --> 00:09:06,514

really didn't do comedy by nature.

196

09:06 ,514 --> 00:09:09,505

But then I was working like, you know,

musicians that weren't comedians,

197

09:09 ,505 --> 00:09:10,865

but we were making comedy spots.

198

09:10 ,975 --> 00:09:13,325

So it was really good training in.

199

09:13 ,770 --> 00:09:17,170

And finding comedy with people

who weren't comedians by nature.

200

09:17 ,320 --> 00:09:20,250

Just looking back and I'm feeling

old, I'm realizing Kurt Loder is

201

09:20 ,250 --> 00:09:24,710

into his 70s now, which is just,

you know, mind boggling for me.

202

09:25 ,290 --> 00:09:27,039

Um, you know what I think?

203

09:27 ,039 --> 00:09:29,569

I would think about this, you know,

guy giving me my news when I was

204

09:29 ,570 --> 00:09:31,529

in junior high or whatever it was.

205

09:31 ,590 --> 00:09:31,900

Yeah.

206

09:32 ,070 --> 00:09:36,000

So when you went off and did this,

what were your folks up, uh, up to

207

09:36 ,000 --> 00:09:38,460

as far as career wise, you know,

you're going the direction of.

208

09:38 ,670 --> 00:09:43,140

Of directing promos and what, did they

understand kind of what you were up

209

09:43 ,140 --> 00:09:44,739

to when you're explaining to them?

210

09:44 ,790 --> 00:09:46,390

Cause this isn't journalism, you know?

211

09:46 ,449 --> 00:09:48,050

Laura Murphy: No, kind of.

212

09:48 ,079 --> 00:09:52,119

I think the great thing about my

parents is they were, they definitely

213

09:52 ,119 --> 00:09:56,189

were encouraged me to go to a school

with more options than just art school

214

09:56 ,209 --> 00:09:59,449

because they wanted to make sure I had

something broader and that I wasn't

215

09:59 ,449 --> 00:10:00,979

just going to be a starving artist.

216

10:01 ,540 --> 00:10:07,175

But then once I graduated, they were

kind of like, They were always super

217

10:07 ,175 --> 00:10:09,055

supportive of whatever I wanted to do.

218

10:09 ,064 --> 00:10:12,435

My dad is a teacher, a retired history

teacher, high school history teacher.

219

10:12 ,665 --> 00:10:16,244

And my mom was like an

administrative director and ran a

220

10:16 ,244 --> 00:10:18,724

home for like, uh, troubled kids.

221

10:18 ,794 --> 00:10:22,004

And she was a social

worker, um, for a long time.

222

10:22 ,155 --> 00:10:27,705

So they were like very supportive

of whatever I wanted to do,

223

10:27 ,705 --> 00:10:30,035

but also they were very funny.

224

10:30 ,195 --> 00:10:34,765

Like growing up in my household,

My parents and their friends

225

10:34 ,765 --> 00:10:38,715

and my uncles and my aunt, like

everybody was hilarious, I realized.

226

10:38 ,815 --> 00:10:42,844

So, and I was one of those kids, my

sister and I, my parents were very much

227

10:42 ,845 --> 00:10:46,375

like the kids sit at the adult table

and hang out with the adults talking.

228

10:46 ,395 --> 00:10:48,894

And so I absorbed a lot of adult.

229

10:49 ,325 --> 00:10:55,745

Mature comedy, not rated R, but just like

elevated comedy, uh, from a young age.

230

10:55 ,745 --> 00:10:56,765

I was exposed to that.

231

10:56 ,775 --> 00:11:00,825

And I do think that somewhat

informed where I ended up, like I was

232

11:00 ,825 --> 00:11:02,244

subconsciously absorbing all this.

233

11:02 ,274 --> 00:11:04,345

And I, like I said, I was

watching a lot of comedy.

234

11:04 ,345 --> 00:11:05,355

I loved watching comedy.

235

11:05 ,464 --> 00:11:05,554

I

236

11:05 ,554 --> 00:11:08,879

was just, I was just about to ask you,

you know, back then, you know, your

237

11:08 ,879 --> 00:11:12,715

folks watching, let's say like Richard

Pryor or Carlin and all that on, on,

238

11:12 ,865 --> 00:11:16,935

you know, uh, back then it was like HBO

was all those comedy specials and stuff.

239

11:16 ,935 --> 00:11:17,214

It was

240

11:17 ,215 --> 00:11:18,315

Laura Murphy: like Robin Williams.

241

11:18 ,375 --> 00:11:21,535

I remember the Robin Williams

standup special was huge.

242

11:21 ,645 --> 00:11:29,035

Uh, also my dad had like the school gave

him like a laser disc player or whatever.

243

11:29 ,035 --> 00:11:32,524

So we were like early adopters

to renting video content.

244

11:32 ,814 --> 00:11:33,895

And one of those

245

11:34 ,064 --> 00:11:35,544

real big ones, it was like an album.

246

11:35 ,544 --> 00:11:35,784

One of those ones.

247

11:35 ,814 --> 00:11:37,919

Yeah, it was like,

248

11:38 ,230 --> 00:11:41,470

Laura Murphy: It was like post

VHS, but like he skipped over

249

11:41 ,470 --> 00:11:45,600

the beta and went right to some

other now defunct form of video.

250

11:46 ,110 --> 00:11:50,640

And, uh, I remember watching Mr. Mom.

251

11:50 ,669 --> 00:11:54,740

He brought home Mr. Mom, and I remember

watching that movie and thinking, this

252

11:54 ,740 --> 00:11:58,180

is the most brilliant movie I've ever

seen, and I probably watched it 200 times.

253

11:58 ,209 --> 00:12:01,120

And to this day, I'll still say,

like, anytime somebody asks me

254

12:01 ,120 --> 00:12:05,135

what's, you know, favorite movies,

top four, Mr. Mom is still in there.

255

12:05 ,155 --> 00:12:06,625

I go back and rewatch it.

256

12:06 ,625 --> 00:12:07,755

It's kind of literally

257

12:07 ,755 --> 00:12:12,915

just, I just saw, I saw there as

a, uh, Michael Keaton has a film.

258

12:12 ,915 --> 00:12:15,755

I think it's coming out on,

uh, on HBO or max or whatever.

259

12:15 ,805 --> 00:12:18,025

Uh, I think there, I think

it released in theaters.

260

12:18 ,025 --> 00:12:19,445

It's just now coming on max.

261

12:19 ,845 --> 00:12:21,404

Um, and I was like, God, you know what?

262

12:21 ,445 --> 00:12:24,465

And it just popped into my

mind, uh, it was, uh, the Mr.

263

12:24 ,465 --> 00:12:26,365

Mom and what the physical comedy.

264

12:26 ,365 --> 00:12:30,315

So when I reference him, you know, I, some

people think Batman or some of the other

265

12:30 ,315 --> 00:12:35,239

roles, I'm like, Mr. Mom or that one where

he works in the Japanese car factory.

266

12:35 ,279 --> 00:12:35,899

Laura Murphy: Oh yeah.

267

12:35 ,899 --> 00:12:38,729

Uh, I forgot the name of it, but he

268

12:38 ,729 --> 00:12:40,459

would, yeah, I just fell

in love with the guys.

269

12:40 ,459 --> 00:12:42,719

Like, you know, this is, you

know, this is somebody I don't

270

12:42 ,790 --> 00:12:44,159

everything, everything he's in.

271

12:44 ,159 --> 00:12:44,849

I want to watch.

272

12:44 ,899 --> 00:12:45,339

Um,

273

12:45 ,340 --> 00:12:50,640

Laura Murphy: that was like an

amazing cast of comedy geniuses.

274

12:51 ,010 --> 00:12:51,230

Yeah.

275

12:51 ,230 --> 00:12:51,770

Oh, that's right.

276

12:51 ,770 --> 00:12:53,460

Martin mole was hitting on his wife.

277

12:53 ,500 --> 00:12:54,510

Uh, yeah, there we go.

278

12:54 ,510 --> 00:12:54,790

Yeah.

279

12:55 ,210 --> 00:12:57,520

The one scene I remember

cause it was in the promos.

280

12:57 ,520 --> 00:13:00,620

He, he was changing a diaper and he

had goggles on and you know, kitchen

281

13:00 ,669 --> 00:13:04,140

gloves and all this other, you know,

there's something to stick in your mind.

282

13:04 ,150 --> 00:13:09,280

But, um, so, so, so, you know, fast

forward, you know, you're, you're at MTV.

283

13:09 ,320 --> 00:13:12,630

How does it, how does it go from,

uh, how does your trajectory go

284

13:12 ,630 --> 00:13:17,960

from TV promo thing into actually

longer form theatrical stuff.

285

13:18 ,314 --> 00:13:20,395

Laura Murphy: I thought I would do

commercials because that made the

286

13:20 ,395 --> 00:13:24,105

most sense with the, like, I left MTV

with a reel of, of, you know, short

287

13:24 ,105 --> 00:13:27,684

form content, and I thought I would

do commercials, but when I came out

288

13:27 ,685 --> 00:13:32,365

to LA, I ended up going into a lot

of writer's rooms on award shows.

289

13:32 ,905 --> 00:13:34,115

Doing like punch up stuff.

290

13:34 ,115 --> 00:13:39,035

So I kind of ended up leaning on

the writing more and built a lot of

291

13:39 ,035 --> 00:13:45,504

relationships that way and then the

thing about MTV is I Maintained a great

292

13:45 ,504 --> 00:13:48,284

relationship with them and I would still

go back and work for them freelance

293

13:48 ,414 --> 00:13:52,895

So I just I keep getting projects with

MTV just at higher and higher levels

294

13:52 ,895 --> 00:13:55,555

and that was kind of what happened I

was doing a bunch of variety stuff.

295

13:55 ,555 --> 00:13:56,454

I was doing sketch.

296

13:56 ,464 --> 00:14:02,720

I kind of ended up directing some sketch

stuff via writing and then MTV had this

297

14:02 ,720 --> 00:14:06,449

show they called Guy Code that was like

pretty successful and they wanted to

298

14:06 ,449 --> 00:14:10,320

make a girl version and I think they

were like, Oh, we need to bring in,

299

14:10 ,530 --> 00:14:12,350

you know, the creator was a was male.

300

14:12 ,350 --> 00:14:14,680

So they wanted to bring in

a female to co showrun it.

301

14:14 ,680 --> 00:14:18,989

And, and they were like, we need like

a funny female who's not too girly.

302

14:18 ,999 --> 00:14:21,450

And, and I think somebody was

like, Oh, that's Laura Murphy,

303

14:21 ,460 --> 00:14:22,460

you should call Laura Murphy.

304

14:22 ,470 --> 00:14:24,660

Like I really, my name came up that way.

305

14:24 ,920 --> 00:14:31,290

Um, and so I ended up going back to

MTV, going back to New York to do work.

306

14:31 ,454 --> 00:14:37,175

what was supposed to be like a six episode

show called Girl Code and then we did

307

14:37 ,175 --> 00:14:42,505

a pilot and they moved it from MTV2 to

MTV and then it got greenlit for like

308

14:42 ,635 --> 00:14:46,965

20 episodes and then we did three, you

know, three seasons or something, four

309

14:46 ,965 --> 00:14:48,894

seasons, so it was like 80 episodes later.

310

14:48 ,905 --> 00:14:52,505

So I ended up going back to New York for

a couple years to do Girl Code and that

311

14:52 ,545 --> 00:14:56,785

opened the door to, you know, I did a

couple sketches for John Oliver and then

312

14:57 ,150 --> 00:14:59,100

I did a show called Adam ruins everything.

313

14:59 ,580 --> 00:15:00,220

And then,

314

15:00 ,220 --> 00:15:01,399

yeah,

315

15:01 ,400 --> 00:15:02,430

Laura Murphy: I did a bunch of those.

316

15:02 ,430 --> 00:15:03,730

So that kind of opened up.

317

15:03 ,750 --> 00:15:07,810

And as once I started doing long form,

I realized, Oh, I really love this.

318

15:07 ,820 --> 00:15:08,950

I love commercials too.

319

15:08 ,950 --> 00:15:09,849

I'll always do commercials.

320

15:09 ,850 --> 00:15:10,530

They're fun.

321

15:10 ,539 --> 00:15:11,150

They're quick.

322

15:11 ,169 --> 00:15:13,450

You get to play with fun

toys, like work with amazing.

323

15:13 ,669 --> 00:15:17,430

So I'll always do commercials,

but, um, Doing long working with

324

15:17 ,430 --> 00:15:18,090

John Oliver.

325

15:18 ,100 --> 00:15:20,490

That's how much lead time do you have?

326

15:20 ,490 --> 00:15:23,480

And I've always wondered this about that,

like how much time you've got between

327

15:23 ,480 --> 00:15:26,490

here's our concept for a thing we're

going to do until they actually need

328

15:26 ,490 --> 00:15:28,570

to package everything ready to roll.

329

15:28 ,570 --> 00:15:30,900

You know, it seems like it's a

compressed timeframe, or do you

330

15:30 ,900 --> 00:15:32,679

have a pretty good amount of time?

331

15:32 ,885 --> 00:15:34,185

Laura Murphy: No, it's very short.

332

15:34 ,465 --> 00:15:37,965

Um, I, they would call me on a Wednesday.

333

15:37 ,965 --> 00:15:39,995

We would scout on a

Thursday, shoot it Friday.

334

15:39 ,995 --> 00:15:42,805

They have these amazing editors and

they would be ready to go by Sunday.

335

15:43 ,165 --> 00:15:44,535

So it's like super fast.

336

15:44 ,754 --> 00:15:45,884

Cause you have to be topical.

337

15:45 ,884 --> 00:15:47,884

You have to be current like

with John Oliver's show.

338

15:47 ,884 --> 00:15:51,844

And it seems like a lot of what he has

is a lot of the things he does are very

339

15:52 ,015 --> 00:15:54,984

visual humor, you know, for lack of

a better way of putting it, you know,

340

15:54 ,984 --> 00:15:56,435

with all the awards and stuff he's won.

341

15:56 ,435 --> 00:15:58,645

I mean, that's kind of, it's

almost like the journalism thing.

342

15:58 ,645 --> 00:16:00,684

It's like news packages

basically, you know,

343

16:01 ,240 --> 00:16:04,540

Laura Murphy: I only did the ske I did

the sketches, like the pre tapes, and I

344

16:04 ,550 --> 00:16:11,680

think I only I did two of them, um, and

that got me more meetings than 80 episodes

345

16:11 ,680 --> 00:16:13,460

of Girl Code, hand down, hands down.

346

16:13 ,510 --> 00:16:16,749

Because it's such, like, it's such a

smart show, the writing is so amazing.

347

16:16 ,760 --> 00:16:19,979

They get amazing actors to be in

the sketches because everybody

348

16:19 ,980 --> 00:16:22,700

wants to be a part of it because

it's such a brilliant show.

349

16:23 ,000 --> 00:16:25,800

Um, so, being able to do that.

350

16:27 ,129 --> 00:16:30,219

It was such a great experience and

I was so proud to work on it and

351

16:30 ,219 --> 00:16:33,829

it did also open a lot of other

doors for other meetings and jobs.

352

16:33 ,839 --> 00:16:34,989

It was a big stepping stone.

353

16:35 ,979 --> 00:16:39,639

Yeah, it seems like commercials, it's

fast, it's, uh, you're coming up with

354

16:39 ,639 --> 00:16:44,545

an idea and it shows up on screen

pretty quickly as opposed to, Film,

355

16:44 ,545 --> 00:16:46,085

which is like, you can conceive of it.

356

16:46 ,085 --> 00:16:48,515

You know, you got like theoretically

screenplay can just be rolling around

357

16:48 ,515 --> 00:16:53,385

for years, you know, so, but as a

director, you're married to it for a

358

16:53 ,385 --> 00:16:57,005

year to two years, you know, that's a

long time, you know, so that's a big

359

16:57 ,015 --> 00:17:00,644

jump from doing these short little

packages to doing something long form.

360

17:00 ,644 --> 00:17:05,045

Was there a preference you have, you know,

with your love of doing commercials and,

361

17:05 ,045 --> 00:17:08,455

uh, the, the, the stuff with John Oliver,

do you have a preference either way?

362

17:08 ,755 --> 00:17:13,725

Laura Murphy: I mean, I have a perfect

dream balance that I've maintained.

363

17:13 ,825 --> 00:17:18,105

I successfully have only done it one

year, but the perfect, the dream is to do

364

17:18 ,145 --> 00:17:21,504

a couple of long form projects and then

a bunch of commercials in between them.

365

17:21 ,855 --> 00:17:28,395

So I, like I did, uh, F Mary kill,

we shot, you know, 2023, I guess.

366

17:28 ,675 --> 00:17:30,835

But then there was like a

little halt because of strikes.

367

17:30 ,905 --> 00:17:33,524

Then I did the posts through

a lot of the strikes.

368

17:33 ,524 --> 00:17:33,855

So.

369

17:34 ,315 --> 00:17:35,405

You know, I did that.

370

17:35 ,405 --> 00:17:37,575

And then when I was done with

that, I was like, Oh, I'm going

371

17:37 ,575 --> 00:17:38,365

to do commercials for a while.

372

17:38 ,365 --> 00:17:42,535

And I was able to do a ton of

commercials for 2024, which was great.

373

17:42 ,565 --> 00:17:44,304

So it's like a different muscle.

374

17:44 ,344 --> 00:17:47,514

And like, um, so that was

like the perfect balance.

375

17:47 ,555 --> 00:17:50,704

So that's what I would like to do is

just do a bunch of commercials, make

376

17:50 ,715 --> 00:17:52,634

some money to play around in that world.

377

17:52 ,654 --> 00:17:55,474

And then long form projects

that takes over my life for two

378

17:55 ,474 --> 00:17:57,414

years and bounce back and forth.

379

17:57 ,424 --> 00:17:58,415

That's like my dream.

380

17:58 ,645 --> 00:18:01,415

Whether I will be successful, that's

been other people's dream too.

381

18:01 ,465 --> 00:18:01,885

I don't know.

382

18:02 ,315 --> 00:18:04,555

To me, part of the Zen is being

able to work with cool people.

383

18:04 ,555 --> 00:18:08,781

I mean, I saw you work with

Eliza Schlesinger, Schlesinger,

384

18:08 ,781 --> 00:18:09,736

Laura Murphy: Schlesinger, Schlesinger,

385

18:09 ,736 --> 00:18:10,905

Schlesinger, Schlesinger, Schlesinger.

386

18:10 ,914 --> 00:18:12,035

Yeah, I want to make sure I've seen him.

387

18:12 ,395 --> 00:18:14,084

She is just awesome.

388

18:14 ,084 --> 00:18:15,514

You know, she is hilarious.

389

18:15 ,565 --> 00:18:19,625

Like when you're working with people

who are inherently funny, you know,

390

18:19 ,625 --> 00:18:24,235

you say cutting and they look at

you, you know, is comedy just just.

391

18:24 ,580 --> 00:18:25,479

Kind of your jam.

392

18:25 ,479 --> 00:18:28,479

Is that somewhere you, you know,

you'd like living in the comedy zone.

393

18:28 ,909 --> 00:18:29,290

Laura Murphy: Yeah.

394

18:29 ,290 --> 00:18:34,689

And I think, I mean, I love comedy

so much and I love, and you know, I

395

18:35 ,379 --> 00:18:40,020

have done improv classes in college

and I, like, I understand the, to me,

396

18:40 ,020 --> 00:18:43,620

like comedy on set and improvising

is a different, it's writing.

397

18:43 ,620 --> 00:18:44,649

It's a form of writing.

398

18:44 ,649 --> 00:18:46,159

It's a very similar muscle.

399

18:46 ,419 --> 00:18:48,500

So I've worked with so many.

400

18:48 ,845 --> 00:18:53,605

Um, improv comedy people in scripted

roles and then in sketch roles that it

401

18:53 ,605 --> 00:18:57,704

is like I like to keep that muscle fine

tuned and I think the great thing is

402

19:00 ,470 --> 00:19:03,840

Comedy actors and comedians

like Eliza recognize that in me.

403

19:03 ,840 --> 00:19:06,790

There's like a comfortable, I create

a comfortable environment where

404

19:06 ,790 --> 00:19:10,220

they can go for it, but also where

I'm guiding them and they trust me.

405

19:10 ,220 --> 00:19:15,259

So, I think it becomes like a really great

symbiotic relationship where, uh, you

406

19:15 ,259 --> 00:19:18,529

know, you can direct a, direct the comedy.

407

19:18 ,690 --> 00:19:22,310

And guide the comedy, but let them

also, like, do their thing and thrive.

408

19:22 ,480 --> 00:19:24,730

And then there's some projects

you do where, like, there's,

409

19:24 ,750 --> 00:19:25,810

I don't have to direct it.

410

19:25 ,810 --> 00:19:29,740

Like, you know, I did, um, Murderville,

uh, the Christmas special for

411

19:29 ,740 --> 00:19:32,479

Murderville, which was like Will Arnett

and Maya Rudolph and Jason Bateman.

412

19:32 ,480 --> 00:19:34,309

It's like, I'm not, I'm

not really directing that.

413

19:34 ,320 --> 00:19:37,290

They're just doing what they

do as masters of that art form.

414

19:37 ,290 --> 00:19:39,390

And I'm just making sure the

cameras are in the right place.

415

19:39 ,840 --> 00:19:41,290

So it's like project to project.

416

19:41 ,290 --> 00:19:43,170

It changes too on how much I'm.

417

19:43 ,400 --> 00:19:44,800

I think I'd be a little intimidated.

418

19:44 ,800 --> 00:19:47,530

Like with Jason Bateman and Smith,

like this so quick to me, it seems

419

19:47 ,530 --> 00:19:50,060

like you could almost put it on cruise

control if you have the right people

420

19:50 ,060 --> 00:19:52,640

there, you know, kind of, uh, you just

kind of get out of the way and let

421

19:52 ,640 --> 00:19:53,930

them do their thing a little bit, but

422

20:00 ,889 --> 00:20:02,899

how did the effemary

kill thing come together?

423

20:02 ,899 --> 00:20:03,289

Was it?

424

20:03 ,540 --> 00:20:06,330

Was like same kind of thing with, uh, MTV.

425

20:06 ,330 --> 00:20:09,040

Somebody's like, Hey, we're,

are, are, are the, um, how is it?

426

20:09 ,040 --> 00:20:13,230

MTV said that somebody who's looking

for a specific kind of director.

427

20:13 ,230 --> 00:20:13,540

Laura Murphy: Yeah.

428

20:13 ,589 --> 00:20:15,050

Who is not too girly.

429

20:15 ,459 --> 00:20:17,780

Um, the F Mary kill, I got the script.

430

20:18 ,050 --> 00:20:19,799

I think it came through my agents.

431

20:19 ,800 --> 00:20:23,340

I think they were specifically, it

was, you know, Buzzfeed and Lionsgate.

432

20:23 ,639 --> 00:20:26,710

And they think they specifically

were looking for a female director.

433

20:28 ,665 --> 00:20:32,254

And, I don't know if I had

met with some of the people

434

20:32 ,264 --> 00:20:34,045

beforehand, I don't think so.

435

20:34 ,045 --> 00:20:36,535

I think, like, when I did Cursed

Friends, which was the movie I did

436

20:36 ,535 --> 00:20:39,795

before that, a lot of the executives

that were on that from Comedy Central

437

20:39 ,805 --> 00:20:43,575

knew me from Nora, Awkwafina is Nora

from Queens, which is another show I did.

438

20:43 ,785 --> 00:20:47,165

And then some of the other executives

knew me from other meetings and projects,

439

20:47 ,195 --> 00:20:50,890

so that was, like, truly, like, I

was in, on a list, but all of them

440

20:50 ,890 --> 00:20:52,410

knew me, and that worked in my favor.

441

20:52 ,640 --> 00:20:55,670

I do think F. Mary Kill, I just

got the script cold from my agent.

442

20:56 ,000 --> 00:20:59,300

But, what I was very excited

about is it was this kind of

443

20:59 ,449 --> 00:21:02,450

cross genre thriller comedy.

444

21:02 ,600 --> 00:21:05,979

Like, it was very much a thriller that

had this, and I was very excited to

445

21:05 ,979 --> 00:21:10,390

play in that world of like, making

something that wasn't just comedy.

446

21:10 ,720 --> 00:21:16,780

Um, and I, so I had a meeting with

them, but I put together this very

447

21:16 ,780 --> 00:21:20,890

extensive treatment of what I thought

the movie would, what I, my vision

448

21:20 ,890 --> 00:21:24,060

for the movie, which was, I think,

very different than everybody else's.

449

21:24 ,070 --> 00:21:29,940

Like, I really leaned into the Alfred

Hitchcock inspiration, and, you know,

450

21:29 ,969 --> 00:21:33,100

I pulled a lot of reference from, like,

David Fincher, and all these, like,

451

21:33 ,120 --> 00:21:37,290

very driving, thriller, moody movies.

452

21:37 ,660 --> 00:21:42,865

Um, Because I thought that would allow

us to pull the push the comedy further so

453

21:42 ,865 --> 00:21:46,755

it could like look really cinematic like

a thriller remind people as it's going

454

21:46 ,755 --> 00:21:49,915

that it's a thriller but then constantly

have comedy to remind people that it's

455

21:49 ,915 --> 00:21:54,805

a comedy to like kind of find that good

zone where you don't you can have both

456

21:54 ,814 --> 00:21:56,564

without compromising the other genre.

457

21:56 ,924 --> 00:21:57,524

A lot of

458

21:57 ,635 --> 00:22:00,019

anticipation, the Hitchcockian.

459

22:00 ,240 --> 00:22:04,020

I don't know if that's a phrase, but,

but yeah, it was, uh, but it was,

460

22:04 ,230 --> 00:22:07,820

you know, such an interesting kind

of micro commentary also in the whole

461

22:07 ,830 --> 00:22:12,440

online dating thing, which I heard

something like Gen Z is kind of pushing.

462

22:12 ,449 --> 00:22:14,790

They, they, they're like

trying out this new thing of

463

22:14 ,859 --> 00:22:16,190

meeting people in person first.

464

22:18 ,335 --> 00:22:18,635

Yeah, I know.

465

22:19 ,345 --> 00:22:19,645

Yeah.

466

22:19 ,985 --> 00:22:24,465

Um, it was kind of a fun, you know, uh,

premise to play with, you know, certainly.

467

22:24 ,465 --> 00:22:28,054

But, uh, do you have any epiphanies as

you kind of moved into, okay, this is

468

22:28 ,124 --> 00:22:29,675

something different than I've been doing.

469

22:29 ,975 --> 00:22:34,445

Well, you're done the other, you know, all

of the, we're just talking about Jason.

470

22:35 ,530 --> 00:22:37,100

Yeah, that was a totally different

471

22:37 ,100 --> 00:22:37,620

Laura Murphy: style.

472

22:37 ,670 --> 00:22:39,590

Yeah, I, I love doing sketch.

473

22:39 ,620 --> 00:22:42,480

I don't do as much sketch anymore

because I like having something

474

22:42 ,480 --> 00:22:43,730

bigger to sink my teeth into.

475

22:43 ,730 --> 00:22:46,699

But the thing that I loved about

sketch, which I think carries on and

476

22:46 ,699 --> 00:22:50,590

has informed career decisions, is

literally every sketch is its own.

477

22:51 ,215 --> 00:22:53,785

visual touchstone and its own

look, you know, like something

478

22:53 ,785 --> 00:22:55,345

could be a parody of jackass.

479

22:55 ,345 --> 00:22:59,025

And then the next thing could be something

that has to look like a movie trailer

480

22:59 ,255 --> 00:23:01,374

for like, you know, a 20 million movie.

481

23:01 ,375 --> 00:23:05,655

So you get to kind of try all

different things filmmaking wise.

482

23:05 ,975 --> 00:23:10,475

And I feel similarly in choosing long

form projects that it's like, I loved

483

23:10 ,595 --> 00:23:16,270

the idea of Like Cursed Friends was like

a spooky Halloween comedy where there

484

23:16 ,270 --> 00:23:19,450

was like a world of jump scares which

I had never done before and putting

485

23:19 ,450 --> 00:23:24,499

some of those in and then Murderville

was like this kind of handheld, you

486

23:24 ,499 --> 00:23:30,820

know, fast moving awesome docu style

like mockumentary style shooting with

487

23:30 ,820 --> 00:23:34,245

like four cameras where we were like

You know, we didn't even call cut.

488

23:34 ,274 --> 00:23:37,384

I would just yell pause, and then the

cameras would move, and then continue,

489

23:37 ,384 --> 00:23:38,384

and then they would keep going.

490

23:38 ,614 --> 00:23:40,864

And it was like, you didn't know

what to expect, because nobody, only

491

23:40 ,864 --> 00:23:44,384

half the people on the scene have

scripts, and that was a completely

492

23:44 ,384 --> 00:23:45,634

different experience, which I loved.

493

23:45 ,644 --> 00:23:50,994

So I think I do continue to like,

trying, playing in different things,

494

23:50 ,995 --> 00:23:55,814

and different styles, so that I can

expand my filmmaking language and skill

495

23:55 ,814 --> 00:23:57,634

set, and shoot things different ways.

496

23:57 ,860 --> 00:24:01,800

Going back to your promo time, you know,

just from me working with promo people,

497

24:01 ,800 --> 00:24:05,029

it's, it's fast and furious, you know,

you're, you're, you got an idea and it's

498

24:05 ,029 --> 00:24:09,579

gotta be on the air sometimes within

hours, you know, so, um, you know, as

499

24:09 ,580 --> 00:24:13,649

far as the, the shoot on that, how long

were you, uh, making, uh, ephemera kill?

500

24:14 ,320 --> 00:24:17,229

Laura Murphy: Uh, I think

we shot for 20 days.

501

24:17 ,330 --> 00:24:21,020

The, the challenging thing about that,

which I, I think I, what I learned

502

24:21 ,020 --> 00:24:23,729

from Curse Friends and that is that

like anything that's like a scary

503

24:23 ,729 --> 00:24:25,820

movie or a thriller is so many nights.

504

24:25 ,899 --> 00:24:26,689

It's all at night.

505

24:26 ,889 --> 00:24:30,179

And so that means all night

shoots, which is brutal.

506

24:30 ,469 --> 00:24:35,439

So I think I want to do a daytime comedy

next, but, uh, we shot for 20 nights.

507

24:35 ,789 --> 00:24:38,850

in Kelowna, British Columbia,

which is like, you know, a

508

24:38 ,850 --> 00:24:40,429

couple hours outside Vancouver.

509

24:40 ,749 --> 00:24:46,100

And where it's located, what we didn't

know going in is that in the summer, um,

510

24:46 ,159 --> 00:24:53,089

there's only true darkness from like 10 to

4 a. m. So like, every night was a sprint.

511

24:53 ,159 --> 00:24:56,570

Like, because if you, as soon as you would

know, you can't, can't fight the sun.

512

24:56 ,850 --> 00:25:00,635

So, uh, we would just, the

night shoots were Insane.

513

25:00 ,645 --> 00:25:03,555

We would move so fast and then we

did shoot a bunch of some stuff

514

25:03 ,555 --> 00:25:08,044

on a set that we built all of

the, um, Lucy's, uh, the apartment

515

25:08 ,155 --> 00:25:10,915

was Eva's apartment was on a set.

516

25:11 ,125 --> 00:25:11,995

So that helped.

517

25:12 ,024 --> 00:25:16,804

But, um, yeah, it was like a 20

day sprint and, uh, we moved fast.

518

25:16 ,894 --> 00:25:18,725

That must have wreaked havoc

on your sleep schedule.

519

25:18 ,814 --> 00:25:19,305

Oh my gosh.

520

25:19 ,745 --> 00:25:19,925

Yeah.

521

25:20 Balancing Work and Family

25:20 ,034 --> 00:25:21,355

Laura Murphy: Plus I have a toddler.

522

25:21 ,635 --> 00:25:25,695

It was like, he was like three at the

time or, uh, he's, so it was like on

523

25:25 ,705 --> 00:25:27,445

weekends, it was hard, it was hard.

524

25:27 ,445 --> 00:25:30,415

We like, we had a lot of childcare

and grandparents helping.

525

25:30 ,415 --> 00:25:30,864

So that

526

25:31 ,094 --> 00:25:34,065

you have a, you, you had a toddler

and you're shooting some, see

527

25:34 ,085 --> 00:25:37,344

I, you know, having three kids

at toddler years, that's, that's

528

25:37 ,375 --> 00:25:38,805

the ones that, that just eat up.

529

25:39 ,035 --> 00:25:40,775

All that time, not eat up.

530

25:40 ,835 --> 00:25:43,165

Of course you want to be there

with them, but it's just, you know,

531

25:43 ,275 --> 00:25:45,145

they, you can't leave them alone.

532

25:45 ,145 --> 00:25:47,724

They, they are, they're

hardwired to, to kill themselves.

533

25:47 ,725 --> 00:25:50,025

You know, they want to do

everything possible to do

534

25:50 ,025 --> 00:25:51,505

something dangerous, you know?

535

25:51 ,544 --> 00:25:51,934

Yes.

536

25:52 ,305 --> 00:25:52,825

And my husband

537

25:53 ,174 --> 00:25:54,414

Laura Murphy: is a camera operator.

538

25:54 ,424 --> 00:25:55,775

He was working on the movie too.

539

25:55 ,815 --> 00:26:00,860

So we, Literally had grandparents and a

babysitter to help because he required,

540

26:00 ,870 --> 00:26:03,560

he required a team when we weren't there.

541

26:03 ,610 --> 00:26:06,140

So when, anytime I wasn't

working, I was with him.

542

26:06 ,330 --> 00:26:08,519

And then when I was working, he

was mostly sleeping and there

543

26:08 ,520 --> 00:26:10,140

was a team of people standing by.

544

26:10 ,180 --> 00:26:13,319

But, uh, you know, it was

exhausting because I didn't want

545

26:13 ,319 --> 00:26:14,800

to compromise on time with him.

546

26:14 ,940 --> 00:26:15,870

So that was a tough one.

547

26:15 ,870 --> 00:26:16,222

Did

548

26:16 ,222 --> 00:26:18,900

you meet him through, uh, the business?

549

26:18 ,940 --> 00:26:21,320

Did you meet him from like

working with him on a project or?

550

26:21 ,320 --> 00:26:21,440

Yeah,

551

26:21 ,460 --> 00:26:25,110

Laura Murphy: YouTube series.

552

26:26 ,125 --> 00:26:29,205

It was like one of, it was YouTube's

first scripted series before they

553

26:29 ,205 --> 00:26:32,425

became, before they launched the

red or YouTube red or whatever.

554

26:32 ,455 --> 00:26:36,655

Um, so we shot a couple of seasons

of this show called part timers and

555

26:36 ,655 --> 00:26:41,624

we met doing that and he had, he was

talking about how he won jeopardy and

556

26:41 ,625 --> 00:26:42,995

I was like, Ooh, now I'm interested.

557

26:42 ,995 --> 00:26:46,215

He is a former jeopardy winner.

558

26:46 ,285 --> 00:26:47,525

That's like their own unique.

559

26:47 ,650 --> 00:26:51,450

Club, you know, like astronauts or

something, you know, there, how many

560

26:51 ,450 --> 00:26:54,390

of them are there, you know, floating

out there working with somebody

561

26:54 ,390 --> 00:26:57,840

who does this for, you know, for a

living, is it, is it easier or does

562

26:57 ,840 --> 00:27:00,229

it present its own challenges or

are you going to get that language?

563

27:00 ,229 --> 00:27:03,820

Like, okay, you understand what each,

each of your days has been like.

564

27:04 ,810 --> 00:27:06,490

Laura Murphy: I think, I

think it could go either way.

565

27:06 ,490 --> 00:27:10,000

I think in a perfect world, you know,

conceptually it's better because

566

27:10 ,240 --> 00:27:13,440

he's freelance and I'm freelance and

we can just trade on and off jobs.

567

27:13 ,740 --> 00:27:15,649

But in reality it never works that way.

568

27:15 ,650 --> 00:27:18,520

You always get jobs at the same time

or you know, if I'm working on a

569

27:18 ,520 --> 00:27:21,730

project and he's there, it makes sense

for him to work on a project with me.

570

27:21 ,969 --> 00:27:26,500

Um, he actually, I met him through

a DP that I continue to work with.

571

27:26 ,510 --> 00:27:28,560

So it's not like I'm

bringing him onto projects.

572

27:28 ,590 --> 00:27:32,370

The DP that I often work with Jonathan

Hall, who's done the movies I've done.

573

27:32 ,900 --> 00:27:33,990

Hires him anyway.

574

27:34 ,020 --> 00:27:40,470

So, uh, so we kind of, it is better, the

downside is often both of us are working

575

27:40 ,470 --> 00:27:43,850

at the same time and then it becomes a

childcare situation which is challenging,

576

27:43 ,860 --> 00:27:47,489

but I think he understands like, you know,

the late nights and the crazy last minute

577

27:47 ,489 --> 00:27:51,080

stuff and how change, you know, you can't

plan anything, you can't plan trips.

578

27:51 ,715 --> 00:27:53,315

Because who knows what'll

happen in three months.

579

27:53 ,835 --> 00:27:55,995

Um, so it's nice that he gets it.

580

27:56 ,205 --> 00:27:59,325

You mentioned the YouTube thing and

YouTube Red and it's just so funny

581

27:59 ,325 --> 00:28:02,745

we're in an era where it's great because

there's so many options but it sucks

582

28:02 ,765 --> 00:28:03,974

because there are so many options.

583

28:03 ,975 --> 00:28:07,154

It's like there's no way you can consume

everything that you want to check out.

584

28:07 ,475 --> 00:28:08,035

Exactly.

585

28:08 ,364 --> 00:28:09,725

Unless you don't work, I guess.

586

28:09 ,950 --> 00:28:13,780

The idea of streaming, regular theatrical

release, what's kind of your jam?

587

28:13 ,980 --> 00:28:17,860

Laura Murphy: I mean, I love that

the streaming element of everything

588

28:17 ,910 --> 00:28:23,180

opened up a lot more possibilities

for directors breaking in.

589

28:23 ,570 --> 00:28:27,440

So both streaming series

and streaming movies.

590

28:27 ,480 --> 00:28:30,049

So there is so much more content,

which the downside of that is

591

28:30 ,050 --> 00:28:30,970

there's too much to consume.

592

28:30 ,980 --> 00:28:34,170

It's overwhelming sometimes,

but the upside is it presented

593

28:34 ,170 --> 00:28:36,570

a lot of opportunities for

filmmakers that I don't know.

594

28:36 ,950 --> 00:28:38,580

Like it was such, it was very.

595

28:38 ,815 --> 00:28:43,395

small amount of jobs and theatrical

releases were very limited.

596

28:43 ,395 --> 00:28:47,835

And even still, it's hard for like women

to get, you know, big franchise movies.

597

28:47 ,835 --> 00:28:50,984

So I think the thing that's great

about streaming is it like opened

598

28:50 ,984 --> 00:28:53,904

up this world, the directors to

break through more like, you know,

599

28:53 ,905 --> 00:28:56,005

people of color and female directors.

600

28:56 ,034 --> 00:28:57,885

And so that's been great.

601

28:58 ,064 --> 00:29:01,445

Um, I love the idea of streaming.

602

29:01 ,455 --> 00:29:07,014

I love people being able to see stuff

immediately all, you know, a lot,

603

29:07 ,035 --> 00:29:08,995

a large amount of people at home.

604

29:09 ,560 --> 00:29:13,130

I am, but there's something really

cool about F. Mary Kill being released

605

29:13 ,130 --> 00:29:17,219

theatrically because it's just like

as a person who's loved film and went

606

29:17 ,219 --> 00:29:20,020

to the movie theater so much as a kid,

it's like, I'm just psyched to have

607

29:20 ,020 --> 00:29:23,749

something play in theaters and the

first time I saw a screening of it on

608

29:23 ,749 --> 00:29:27,469

the big screen, there was that little

like goose bumpy moment of like, Oh,

609

29:27 ,469 --> 00:29:31,525

this is an achievement, like achievement

unlocked, like Awesome that I got to

610

29:31 ,525 --> 00:29:33,345

see something I made on the big screen.

611

29:33 ,525 --> 00:29:37,715

Is this a genre you want to stick with

like comedy or, or you're like, okay,

612

29:37 ,715 --> 00:29:40,104

I want to try this thing over here.

613

29:40 ,104 --> 00:29:41,735

Maybe more dramatic type stuff.

614

29:42 ,090 --> 00:29:46,140

Laura Murphy: I think I love the idea of

These cross genre like I just want to go

615

29:46 ,140 --> 00:29:49,610

through and do all different cross genres

with comedy Like I would love to do an

616

29:49 ,620 --> 00:29:55,089

action comedy like just a full action

comedy You know like the other guys or

617

29:55 ,100 --> 00:30:00,279

spy like these great action comedies I

also feel like what I haven't done and

618

30:00 ,279 --> 00:30:04,960

I'm in the movie space is just a full

comedy like a Caddyshack Like, just a

619

30:05 ,020 --> 00:30:07,380

classic comedy that's just a comedy.

620

30:07 ,610 --> 00:30:09,410

Um, I would love to do that.

621

30:09 ,600 --> 00:30:14,020

Because the genre cross genre ones are

so great and you can really sink your

622

30:14 ,020 --> 00:30:18,039

teeth into, like, filmmaking styles that

are a little more cinematic and elevated.

623

30:18 ,190 --> 00:30:21,080

I would love to now bring that

to just a straight comedy.

624

30:21 ,380 --> 00:30:24,370

And, uh, rated R funny comedy.

625

30:24 ,370 --> 00:30:24,520

I was

626

30:24 ,520 --> 00:30:28,080

just talking with somebody the other day

and I really honestly believe that as

627

30:28 ,080 --> 00:30:31,939

I go through the streamers and whatnot,

there's a lot of wonderful stuff.

628

30:31 ,940 --> 00:30:34,190

Don't get me wrong, but

dramas, dystopian type stuff.

629

30:34 ,190 --> 00:30:39,260

And now what I'm, what I'm personally

miss is the like Judd Apatow sort of style

630

30:39 ,289 --> 00:30:41,530

comedy, the straight up rated R comedies.

631

30:42 ,395 --> 00:30:44,635

I don't know if it's the

budget thing or how those come

632

30:44 ,635 --> 00:30:45,845

together, but I really miss that.

633

30:45 Influences and Inspirations

30:45 ,855 --> 00:30:51,655

I think we need more comedy stuff,

you know, uh, if you kind of looked

634

30:51 ,655 --> 00:30:56,354

at your Mount Rushmore of the people,

uh, you know, directors or actors

635

30:56 ,405 --> 00:30:59,035

that really turn you on to kind of

grab your attention and make you

636

30:59 ,044 --> 00:31:01,305

go, okay, I want to get to writing.

637

31:01 ,305 --> 00:31:04,415

I want to get to filming something,

you know, uh, that kind of make

638

31:04 ,415 --> 00:31:05,395

you want to get back to work.

639

31:05 ,915 --> 00:31:10,365

Laura Murphy: Um, yeah, I mean, so,

the, one of the biggest inspirations

640

31:10 ,395 --> 00:31:15,215

and the, who I talk about constantly

is Steve Conrad, who I found later on,

641

31:15 ,215 --> 00:31:19,965

but, um, he made this show for Amazon

Prime called Patriot, which to this day

642

31:19 ,965 --> 00:31:23,884

I will say is one of the most brilliant

shows I've ever watched in terms of, uh,

643

31:24 ,255 --> 00:31:29,375

strikingly beautiful visuals, incredibly

dry and smart and funny, but then it

644

31:29 ,375 --> 00:31:34,465

also has this music element in it, Just

like it has everything and it was like

645

31:34 ,485 --> 00:31:38,395

really inspiring and also eye opening

because it's not like anything I've seen

646

31:38 ,405 --> 00:31:41,694

before So I'm a big Steve Conrad fan.

647

31:41 ,955 --> 00:31:47,055

I've always been a big Tina Fey fan um,

I think in terms of writing and style of

648

31:47 ,055 --> 00:31:52,750

comedy and also perspective on writing

female comedies and the female characters

649

31:52 ,750 --> 00:31:56,450

and how like layered they are and rich

they are and you know, 30 Rock, obviously

650

31:56 ,450 --> 00:31:59,560

Girls 5eva, which she was involved in,

is one of the most brilliant shows ever.

651

31:59 ,860 --> 00:32:05,620

Um, so I'd say she's another really

big influence and inspiration.

652

32:05 ,660 --> 00:32:11,150

I think Paul Feig also does an amazing job

with, uh, making comedies that are cross

653

32:11 ,150 --> 00:32:17,800

genre or just comedies with female, um,

voices and it's like he's, he's fantastic.

654

32:17 ,800 --> 00:32:21,345

So I think those are kind of

The things that get people that

655

32:21 ,345 --> 00:32:23,145

get me excited and inspirations.

656

32:23 ,145 --> 00:32:27,245

And you know, sometimes I'll just,

I've watched, I'll just watch Patriot

657

32:27 ,295 --> 00:32:31,565

if I'm having like, uh, you know,

a writer's block or I'm trying to

658

32:31 ,615 --> 00:32:32,974

figure out a way to tackle something.

659

32:32 ,974 --> 00:32:35,434

I'll just put Patriot on in the

background with the sound off because

660

32:35 ,434 --> 00:32:38,595

I just find it like, it's like some

people listen to music for inspiration.

661

32:38 ,665 --> 00:32:39,055

Yeah.

662

32:39 ,485 --> 00:32:42,385

Laura Murphy: I will just watch

that show for inspiration.

663

32:42 ,965 --> 00:32:45,445

The other thing I pull a lot of

influence from is I like watching

664

32:45 ,485 --> 00:32:49,964

old comedies that like, I've

recently rewatched all of Cheers.

665

32:50 ,365 --> 00:32:51,985

Um, Moonlighting.

666

32:52 ,145 --> 00:32:56,555

Like, I do think there's something

inspiring about, uh, shows that did kind

667

32:56 ,555 --> 00:33:01,285

of live in just that comedy realm, or,

you know, that did something different.

668

33:01 ,295 --> 00:33:05,235

So, I think, in addition to the other

references and the modern stuff, I

669

33:05 ,235 --> 00:33:07,874

do think there's something to be said

for watching, like, classic comedies.

670

33:07 ,874 --> 00:33:10,234

I mean, I have watched Caddyshack

probably a million times.

671

33:10 ,264 --> 00:33:11,394

And Mr. Mom, obviously.

672

33:12 Caddyshack and Comedy Classics

33:12 ,305 --> 00:33:12,665

Yeah.

673

33:12 ,665 --> 00:33:15,095

Well, Caddyshack is it's, it's up there.

674

33:15 ,095 --> 00:33:18,735

And I think on the Mount Rushmore of like,

you know, they had a sequel, didn't they?

675

33:18 ,765 --> 00:33:23,174

They had a sequel to, uh, uh,

Rodney Dangerfield that they

676

33:23 ,174 --> 00:33:24,485

didn't have him in the second one.

677

33:24 ,485 --> 00:33:27,905

I think when it was like, okay, he kind

of made that like him walking into the

678

33:28 ,075 --> 00:33:31,565

golf shop and, uh, you know, just like

see Rodney Dangerfield, somebody like,

679

33:31 ,565 --> 00:33:35,815

it's like, oh yeah, anything he was, uh,

there was a movie, uh, Uh, back to school.

680

33:35 ,815 --> 00:33:36,890

Back to school.

681

33:36 ,890 --> 00:33:37,249

Yeah.

682

33:37 ,249 --> 00:33:37,607

Yeah.

683

33:37 ,607 --> 00:33:38,324

So good.

684

33:38 ,325 --> 00:33:42,645

You know, you're not watching it to,

to, to learn anything or to be inspired.

685

33:42 ,645 --> 00:33:44,925

You're just like turning your

brain off and just enjoy.

686

33:45 ,135 --> 00:33:46,274

See those kinds of comedies.

687

33:46 ,335 --> 00:33:46,614

Yeah.

688

33:46 ,614 --> 00:33:47,285

We need more.

689

33:47 ,935 --> 00:33:50,685

So you've screened your, you

know, effemary kill in a theater.

690

33:50 ,815 --> 00:33:53,214

So what was that like when you fought,

when you're sitting down, lights

691

33:53 ,215 --> 00:33:56,365

go dark, was it just kind of a cool

experience for you to, you know,

692

33:56 ,865 --> 00:33:57,455

Laura Murphy: have something

693

33:57 ,455 --> 00:33:57,975

in a theater?

694

33:58 Screening Anxiety and Audience Reactions

33:58 ,270 --> 00:34:01,410

Laura Murphy: It was, it was, there

was like anxiety at first because it

695

34:01 ,410 --> 00:34:05,440

occurred, it didn't occur to me till it

started that like, Oh, I'll in real time

696

34:05 ,460 --> 00:34:07,110

see other people's reactions to this.

697

34:07 ,220 --> 00:34:11,100

Like, and then I was like, Oh, what

if they don't, like, what if everybody

698

34:11 ,130 --> 00:34:12,640

hates this and I have to watch it?

699

34:12 ,949 --> 00:34:17,310

Uh, so there was like a moment of

anxiety, but then, you know, like

700

34:17 ,430 --> 00:34:21,100

seeing my name and the come up on the

screen, I was like, that's so awesome.

701

34:21 ,140 --> 00:34:24,680

And it was like, yeah, no,

definitely like a super cool moment.

702

34:24 ,680 --> 00:34:25,190

And then.

703

34:25 ,540 --> 00:34:28,770

hearing people laugh when at

times when they were supposed to

704

34:28 ,770 --> 00:34:31,310

laugh was like, very fulfilling.

705

34:31 ,350 --> 00:34:35,889

Like that was like a high that I was

like, Oh, okay, this is, this is, I'm

706

34:35 ,890 --> 00:34:38,739

gonna, I'm gonna have trouble being

a normal person for the rest of the

707

34:38 ,739 --> 00:34:40,060

night, because this is super cool.

708

34:41 ,010 --> 00:34:43,549

And then you know, I go home and there's

a toddler and then it's like, Oh, right.

709

34:43 ,600 --> 00:34:47,990

I'm just, but, um, that it

was really great experience.

710

34:47 ,990 --> 00:34:50,380

And then after we did a Q,

there was a q& a afterwards.

711

34:50 ,690 --> 00:34:54,320

Um, which was the first time I've

done a Q& A and that was so fun.

712

34:54 ,860 --> 00:34:58,780

Virginia was there actually, um,

and Brooke, who plays the sister.

713

34:58 ,810 --> 00:35:02,620

And then, uh, afterwards somebody

asked to take a picture with me and

714

35:02 ,630 --> 00:35:05,369

had me sign their ticket, which is

the first time that's ever happened.

715

35:05 ,410 --> 00:35:06,650

They were like, can I get your autograph?

716

35:06 ,650 --> 00:35:09,360

And I was like, I'm going to take a

picture of you because you're the first

717

35:09 ,360 --> 00:35:11,109

person to ever ask me for an autograph.

718

35:11 ,489 --> 00:35:13,460

So thanks for that cool career moment.

719

35:13 ,860 --> 00:35:16,410

So, I mean, that was

like, that was fantastic.

720

35:16 ,420 --> 00:35:18,050

And, and I'm so excited.

721

35:18 ,690 --> 00:35:22,300

For it to be released into,

for everybody to see it.

722

35:22 ,330 --> 00:35:27,640

Um, To just, you know, see some, see

the reactions on a, on a big scale where

723

35:27 ,660 --> 00:35:30,300

I think it's coming out theatrically

and streaming at the same time.

724

35:30 ,310 --> 00:35:31,180

So that'll be cool.

725

35:31 ,180 --> 00:35:33,279

So it's like, you can see it in

a theater if you want, but also

726

35:33 ,279 --> 00:35:34,760

it'll be accessible to everybody.

727

35:34 ,760 --> 00:35:38,760

And I'm just excited to hear people's

thoughts on it within reason, you know,

728

35:39 ,050 --> 00:35:40,280

and that's something

that's kind of different.

729

35:40 ,290 --> 00:35:43,450

Usually you had to kind of wait

for something to end up on cable.

730

35:43 ,450 --> 00:35:46,600

And every time I discuss this, I'd

be like, I'm an old guy, you know,

731

35:46 ,860 --> 00:35:48,100

but what are you watching right now?

732

35:48 Current TV Shows and British Dramas

35:48 ,100 --> 00:35:49,880

What's uh, what's, what are you enjoying?

733

35:50 ,085 --> 00:35:53,335

Laura Murphy: It's funny, I,

like, I don't, you know, I

734

35:53 ,365 --> 00:35:55,185

don't watch as much comedy.

735

35:55 ,415 --> 00:35:57,705

I, I'm very selective

about the comedy I watch.

736

35:57 ,795 --> 00:36:02,385

If I'm gonna sit down, and often I do

watch things in binging, because it's

737

36:02 ,385 --> 00:36:05,144

like, oh, I have one day where I don't

have anything to do, I'm just gonna

738

36:05 ,145 --> 00:36:06,905

consume as much of a thing as I can.

739

36:07 ,214 --> 00:36:15,775

I will watch, Any British or BBC murder

drama, like Shetland, yeah, like, like

740

36:15 ,775 --> 00:36:19,105

anything that's, you know, it started

with Broadchurch, and then I was like,

741

36:19 ,285 --> 00:36:22,715

alright, I'm in, like, if it's British

and there's like a missing kid or a dead

742

36:22 ,725 --> 00:36:25,335

kid or a mystery, I'm in, I'll binge it.

743

36:25 ,835 --> 00:36:30,535

And that's what I like to consume, which

is funny because it's not comedy at all.

744

36:30 ,855 --> 00:36:34,345

Um, which is why I think sometime

down the road maybe I would want

745

36:34 ,345 --> 00:36:37,204

to make a drama because I watch so

much of it and I'm very interested.

746

36:37 ,215 --> 00:36:40,665

Like I would love, or I would like

to make a cross genre mystery comedy.

747

36:40 ,994 --> 00:36:43,885

Um, because that is what I enjoy.

748

36:43 ,905 --> 00:36:46,555

So I did just watch the most

recent season of Shetland.

749

36:46 ,745 --> 00:36:51,285

Um, I watched all of Girls5eva,

which is all streaming.

750

36:51 ,315 --> 00:36:52,755

I think it's on Peacock now.

751

36:53 ,355 --> 00:36:56,095

Um, which I think is also brilliant.

752

36:56 ,435 --> 00:37:01,845

And then, there's something else I

watched recently that I can't remember.

753

37:01 ,845 --> 00:37:04,665

Yeah, I think Girls5eva is a

comedy, the most recent comedy

754

37:04 ,665 --> 00:37:06,895

that I've watched and binged on.

755

37:07 ,024 --> 00:37:07,074

You said

756

37:07 ,074 --> 00:37:09,055

that's one Tina Fey, uh, did, right?

757

37:09 ,074 --> 00:37:09,804

Yeah, I think she's like

758

37:09 ,805 --> 00:37:13,344

Laura Murphy: the, uh, it's Meredith,

I forget the creator's name.

759

37:13 ,355 --> 00:37:15,965

Meredith something, but

Tina Fey was a EP on it.

760

37:16 ,325 --> 00:37:21,765

And, uh, it's just, I mean, it's, it's

like a girl band that was popular and

761

37:21 ,765 --> 00:37:23,915

then has a comeback, but they're all

in their forties now and it's just

762

37:23 ,915 --> 00:37:25,544

such a brilliant premise in the comedy.

763

37:25 ,565 --> 00:37:29,995

It very much has that 30 rock

whip smart comedy that I love.

764

37:30 ,525 --> 00:37:35,104

The stuff that she does and Amy Poehler,

I don't know, the two of them, whenever

765

37:35 ,355 --> 00:37:39,025

Lauren Michaels retires, whenever that

happens, I'm really keeping my fingers

766

37:39 ,025 --> 00:37:42,695

crossed that they, one of the two of

them or both of us, you know, take

767

37:42 ,695 --> 00:37:45,925

the reins cause I think that will be

a good thing for Saturday Night Live.

768

37:46 ,005 --> 00:37:49,145

Laura Murphy: That was such a great era

of Weekend Update, the Tina Amey era.

769

37:49 ,465 --> 00:37:52,675

I'm trying to, you know, all the

way back to, uh, Chevy Chase.

770

37:52 ,725 --> 00:37:53,145

No, no, no.

771

37:53 ,225 --> 00:37:53,645

Um,

772

37:53 ,735 --> 00:37:55,074

Laura Murphy: it was Dennis Miller.

773

37:55 ,565 --> 00:37:58,545

Dennis Miller is the one I seem

to remember is when I was a kid.

774

37:58 ,704 --> 00:38:00,215

Laura Murphy: Norm Macdonald, great.

775

38:00 ,874 --> 00:38:04,175

Norm Macdonald, uh, one thing I loved

about him was just facial expressions,

776

38:04 ,175 --> 00:38:05,575

you know, just, you, you, you.

777

38:06 ,275 --> 00:38:10,315

That I love comedians where you don't

need to even really hear them saying much.

778

38:10 ,315 --> 00:38:12,215

It's just the reaction is kind of the jam.

779

38:20 ,484 --> 00:38:24,205

One of the things I like to do is, um,

something called my seven questions kind

780

38:24 ,205 --> 00:38:29,815

of towards the back end, like a little

extra fun food always comes up at least

781

38:29 ,815 --> 00:38:31,755

once it seems like in every episode.

782

38:32 The Seven Questions

38:32 ,165 --> 00:38:37,145

Uh, but what, if you isolate one thing

that you would say, this is like, as far

783

38:37 ,145 --> 00:38:39,224

as comfort food, the one thing you love.

784

38:39 ,475 --> 00:38:40,485

Laura Murphy: It's salty meat.

785

38:40 ,875 --> 00:38:42,025

I'm usually pepperoni.

786

38:43 ,195 --> 00:38:43,695

Oh, really?

787

38:43 ,725 --> 00:38:43,895

Laura Murphy: Yeah.

788

38:44 ,315 --> 00:38:47,045

I'm like a real charcuterie head.

789

38:47 ,105 --> 00:38:49,484

I don't think that's a

thing, but I just made it up.

790

38:49 ,785 --> 00:38:54,715

Uh, I love a charcuterie and I,

if I never ate anything else,

791

38:54 ,765 --> 00:38:56,554

like I don't really go for sweets.

792

38:56 ,555 --> 00:38:57,805

I don't love canned sweet stuff.

793

38:58 ,335 --> 00:39:01,310

If I, I I love pepperoni and salty meat a

794

39:02 ,470 --> 00:39:03,150

couple of days ago.

795

39:03 ,150 --> 00:39:05,330

I have a little grocery

here on the Island.

796

39:05 ,400 --> 00:39:09,060

It was like the 23rd it expires on

the 24th or something like that.

797

39:09 ,060 --> 00:39:13,220

But at one of these charcuterie pre

packaged, you know, kind of like an

798

39:13 ,220 --> 00:39:14,869

adult Lunchables kind of a thing.

799

39:15 ,190 --> 00:39:18,725

I was like, and they Marced it down

from like 10 bucks to like two,

800

39:18 ,745 --> 00:39:19,775

cause they just had to get rid of it.

801

39:19 ,805 --> 00:39:24,015

You know, I was like, okay, there's nobody

here to share this with me, but you know,

802

39:24 ,015 --> 00:39:25,515

there's part of me is like, just do it.

803

39:25 ,715 --> 00:39:28,715

You know, so I went and grabbed some

snack on, on, on this, on the, on

804

39:28 ,715 --> 00:39:31,074

this variety of salamis all day long.

805

39:31 ,075 --> 00:39:34,524

And, uh, I can feel my fingers like,

cause I just, I don't know how much salt.

806

39:34 ,525 --> 00:39:39,665

Laura Murphy: The very first apartment

I had by myself in New York was.

807

39:39 ,690 --> 00:39:47,090

I think I ate charcuterie for dinner seven

straight nights in a row and probably

808

39:47 ,090 --> 00:39:49,180

like 20 more after the rest of the month.

809

39:49 ,180 --> 00:39:53,620

Like I, yeah, it's swollen

ankles is my comfort zone.

810

39:54 ,440 --> 00:39:55,140

Very nice.

811

39:55 ,430 --> 00:39:59,199

My kids got into that cause we go to the

whole foods and we would go by, we would

812

39:59 ,239 --> 00:40:00,550

do this thing cause they had the meat.

813

40:00 ,740 --> 00:40:03,140

And then they had the whole cheese

section, like kids, even though

814

40:03 ,140 --> 00:40:05,840

we're younger, like the funky

cheeses, you know, the funky, they,

815

40:05 ,850 --> 00:40:07,500

they, I was like, it smells bad.

816

40:07 ,500 --> 00:40:08,570

It's probably going to taste really good.

817

40:08 ,570 --> 00:40:09,270

So we got that.

818

40:09 ,270 --> 00:40:14,320

And it was just, we we've had weird

dinners and any parent knows it's

819

40:14 ,320 --> 00:40:15,330

like, okay, what do y'all want to do?

820

40:15 ,670 --> 00:40:16,639

Let's do cheese and meat.

821

40:16 ,640 --> 00:40:17,260

And one of those things like.

822

40:17 ,685 --> 00:40:18,005

Soul.

823

40:18 ,415 --> 00:40:19,055

Whatever y'all wanted.

824

40:20 ,135 --> 00:40:22,805

Laura Murphy: Yeah, my toddler

weirdly loves olive tapenade.

825

40:22 ,815 --> 00:40:25,985

It's like his favorite thing is olive

tapenade on crackers, so I've turned

826

40:25 ,985 --> 00:40:28,085

him into a charcuterie addict also.

827

40:28 ,204 --> 00:40:28,994

Sophisticated.

828

40:29 ,015 --> 00:40:29,255

Yeah.

829

40:29 ,355 --> 00:40:31,295

Uh, just, you know, go easy on the wine.

830

40:31 Dream Conversations and Influential Figures

40:31 ,664 --> 00:40:36,214

Um, now, if your next question, if you

were to sit down and talk story for a

831

40:36 ,214 --> 00:40:40,014

few hours, uh, sit down and have coffee

with three people, living or not,

832

40:40 ,514 --> 00:40:41,835

who would you like to sit down with?

833

40:41 ,835 --> 00:40:45,465

Three different people, cup of

coffee, a few hours of, uh, chatting.

834

40:45 ,654 --> 00:40:46,434

Laura Murphy: Oh, wow.

835

40:46 ,545 --> 00:40:46,945

Um.

836

40:47 ,920 --> 00:40:51,660

I mean, I think, I think Steve Conrad

would definitely be one of them,

837

40:51 ,710 --> 00:40:55,600

because I, the, watching everything

he's made and what he writes, I'm very

838

40:55 ,600 --> 00:40:57,020

interested in how his brain works.

839

40:57 ,790 --> 00:41:03,050

Um, I kind of think the other person

who I've, who I actually met when

840

41:03 ,050 --> 00:41:06,060

I was starting MTV, but like Robert

Evans, you know, the Kid Stays in

841

41:06 ,060 --> 00:41:07,260

the Picture, producer of Godfather.

842

41:07 ,790 --> 00:41:12,600

So I did a shoot with him, one of my first

jobs at MTV, and I met him briefly and,

843

41:12 ,880 --> 00:41:16,820

uh, because we were, he was promoting

the Kid Stays in the Picture and I went

844

41:16 ,820 --> 00:41:21,410

to his house and we did this promo shoot

with him and he was the most interesting

845

41:21 ,410 --> 00:41:23,690

person I've ever met in my entire life.

846

41:24 ,245 --> 00:41:29,515

Like, he's a caricature but not, like he's

such a caricature that you would think

847

41:29 ,515 --> 00:41:31,935

he would be a caricature and he's not,

he was not at all, there was something

848

41:31 ,935 --> 00:41:34,555

so genuine about him and lovable and

you get why everybody roots for him

849

41:34 ,555 --> 00:41:39,850

but he was like a maniac and I was, I

would love to spend Two hours talking

850

41:39 ,850 --> 00:41:42,050

to that dude, hanging out with him.

851

41:42 ,080 --> 00:41:46,450

Sadly, sad that he passed, because that

guy, I mean, yeah, what a character.

852

41:46 ,460 --> 00:41:48,390

He just started calling me

Murph, which was awesome.

853

41:48 ,430 --> 00:41:52,540

Signed a book for me that said,

uh, Murph, let's make two plus

854

41:52 ,640 --> 00:41:56,499

two equal five, not four, because

that's magic and that's us, baby.

855

41:58 ,779 --> 00:42:00,479

Which is exactly how he talks.

856

42:00 ,959 --> 00:42:04,239

So, I think I would love to spend

some time with Robert Evans.

857

42:04 ,579 --> 00:42:06,475

And then Who else?

858

42:06 ,475 --> 00:42:07,185

Let's see.

859

42:08 ,035 --> 00:42:12,135

But didn't he narrate his own

documentary about his own life

860

42:12 ,465 --> 00:42:13,845

or something, which is okay.

861

42:13 ,845 --> 00:42:14,095

Yeah,

862

42:14 ,415 --> 00:42:16,065

Laura Murphy: that was the kid

stays in the picture, which

863

42:16 ,065 --> 00:42:17,035

is actually a great movie.

864

42:17 ,554 --> 00:42:20,905

But yeah, he did the narration on

it and he, he like asked himself

865

42:20 ,905 --> 00:42:22,205

questions and then answers them.

866

42:22 ,465 --> 00:42:24,204

So it would be like, did I hate it?

867

42:24 ,344 --> 00:42:25,474

You bet your ass I did.

868

42:25 ,535 --> 00:42:27,445

And that's like his cadence of talking.

869

42:27 ,445 --> 00:42:30,515

So I had to write a script for him and

I wrote a lot of those and I think he

870

42:30 ,515 --> 00:42:32,115

was impressed that I really nailed his.

871

42:32 ,450 --> 00:42:33,460

His monologue voice.

872

42:33 ,510 --> 00:42:36,510

Yeah, I mean, but he's, he's

decidedly O. G. Hollywood.

873

42:37 ,130 --> 00:42:38,610

Laura Murphy: Which I think is awesome.

874

42:38 ,970 --> 00:42:42,630

Um, and then who else?

875

42:43 ,020 --> 00:42:45,190

I would love to sit down with, um.

876

42:45 ,740 --> 00:42:46,250

Hmm.

877

42:47 ,450 --> 00:42:48,970

I mean, I feel like this

is probably an answer.

878

42:48 ,970 --> 00:42:51,160

A lot of people have given her

cliched, but like, I would like

879

42:51 ,160 --> 00:42:54,350

to, it's two people, but I would

like to sit down with the Obamas.

880

42:55 ,060 --> 00:43:03,850

Like, I feel like, uh, there's something

so, I mean, obviously they're incredible

881

43:03 ,909 --> 00:43:07,600

people and, and politically incredible

and have done so much in groundbreaking.

882

43:07 ,620 --> 00:43:11,590

But I also think in terms of like

branding, because I'm constantly

883

43:11 ,660 --> 00:43:12,720

thinking about branding and like

884

43:13 ,700 --> 00:43:14,540

absolutely

885

43:14 ,910 --> 00:43:17,260

Laura Murphy: bulletproof and,

and like admirable and respectful.

886

43:17 ,990 --> 00:43:22,250

Just flawless and it's like how much of

that is just who they are and how much

887

43:22 ,250 --> 00:43:28,030

of that is crafting a solid foundation,

like, I just want to know how it happened.

888

43:28 ,040 --> 00:43:31,499

Is it just like people are, some people

are just wired that way and they're

889

43:32 ,230 --> 00:43:36,609

creating an existence that is somewhat

bulletproof or is there a strategy there?

890

43:36 ,660 --> 00:43:37,029

I don't know.

891

43:37 ,029 --> 00:43:37,590

I just, well,

892

43:37 ,750 --> 00:43:41,189

you know, I was thinking about that

a while back and I think that you

893

43:41 ,189 --> 00:43:43,885

could only Fake it for so long.

894

43:44 ,105 --> 00:43:49,395

And I think part of the, part of the charm

or part of what works is the authenticity.

895

43:49 ,895 --> 00:43:52,845

You know, I think there's an

authentic note with, with Obama.

896

43:52 ,885 --> 00:43:56,145

Cause he comes up a lot as, as

somebody who folks who don't want to

897

43:56 ,145 --> 00:43:59,414

sit down with, um, you know, you hear

him talk and sometimes you forget,

898

43:59 ,414 --> 00:44:01,175

Oh yeah, this guy was the president.

899

44:01 ,214 --> 00:44:04,435

There are times you hear him because he

just, there was a, there's ease to him.

900

44:04 ,465 --> 00:44:07,205

He's a wonderful orator, you

know, and then, you know, with

901

44:07 ,205 --> 00:44:08,755

the AB comparison we got now.

902

44:09 ,075 --> 00:44:09,805

Uh, but yeah, he,

903

44:10 ,795 --> 00:44:12,264

Laura Murphy: and I

think there's also like.

904

44:12 ,635 --> 00:44:16,335

There's this cool confidence that makes

you feel comfortable in anything he says,

905

44:16 ,355 --> 00:44:21,265

but also and I think you're right It's

there's everything stems from authenticity

906

44:21 ,315 --> 00:44:25,885

but I would love somebody to do like a

mass like for them to do a master class on

907

44:26 ,204 --> 00:44:31,614

taking your Authenticity and then finding

a way to flourish successfully with that

908

44:31 ,754 --> 00:44:36,330

authenticity and how you put it out there

and present it Like build from it so that

909

44:36 ,330 --> 00:44:40,180

at the core there is authenticity, but

you can still, you know, profit from it

910

44:40 ,180 --> 00:44:45,370

or, or do good with it or, or establish

something bigger in the world from it.

911

44:45 ,440 --> 00:44:47,729

And like, I think that's

what is brilliant about them.

912

44:47 ,840 --> 00:44:50,090

You just look at the people

who have endured the ones

913

44:50 ,090 --> 00:44:50,979

that kind of stick around.

914

44:50 ,979 --> 00:44:53,080

You never really hear anything

too controversial about them.

915

44:53 ,080 --> 00:44:54,750

They seem to just be authentic folks.

916

44:55 ,290 --> 00:44:56,800

Laura Murphy: I guess also David Lynch.

917

44:56 ,830 --> 00:44:57,930

Oh, I forgot about David Lynch.

918

44:57 ,930 --> 00:45:02,449

That would be a very interesting person

to talk about like authenticity and

919

45:02 ,449 --> 00:45:06,685

sticking to your Like your vision

and your voice and your brand agree.

920

45:06 Celebrity Crushes and Nostalgia

45:06 ,985 --> 00:45:11,155

Um, now the next question I got, if you

go back in time to when you were young,

921

45:11 ,464 --> 00:45:15,515

uh, when you were, you know, teenage

or whatever, even maybe younger, but

922

45:15 ,515 --> 00:45:17,314

who was your first celebrity crush?

923

45:17 ,664 --> 00:45:18,525

Laura Murphy: Oh, wow.

924

45:19 ,215 --> 00:45:23,394

I feel like I always liked the

friend or the sidekick in TV shows.

925

45:24 ,005 --> 00:45:28,645

Like if I was watching, uh, Silver

Spoons, I would always like the friend.

926

45:28 ,725 --> 00:45:29,675

I don't remember who the friend was.

927

45:30 ,375 --> 00:45:31,335

It was Jason Bateman.

928

45:31 ,455 --> 00:45:31,875

Wasn't it?

929

45:31 ,875 --> 00:45:33,145

Laura Murphy: Was it Jason Bateman?

930

45:33 ,174 --> 00:45:33,534

Maybe.

931

45:33 ,535 --> 00:45:34,465

Or is that, uh.

932

45:34 ,495 --> 00:45:34,745

Well, he

933

45:34 ,745 --> 00:45:36,045

was the nemesis though.

934

45:36 ,055 --> 00:45:36,075

Yeah.

935

45:36 ,084 --> 00:45:38,224

Jason Bateman was the

nemesis to Ricky Schroeder.

936

45:38 ,464 --> 00:45:42,415

It's kind of funny how fast forward every,

you know, Jason Bateman was the ass.

937

45:42 ,415 --> 00:45:42,425

Yeah.

938

45:42 ,425 --> 00:45:43,244

And then

939

45:43 ,245 --> 00:45:43,864

Laura Murphy: it turned.

940

45:43 ,865 --> 00:45:44,205

Yeah.

941

45:44 ,405 --> 00:45:47,155

Everything he's in, it's just like,

I don't know why he's so quick on,

942

45:47 ,165 --> 00:45:50,025

you know, and you had a chance to

work with him, which is very cool.

943

45:50 ,055 --> 00:45:50,255

Yeah.

944

45:50 ,855 --> 00:45:51,985

Laura Murphy: I definitely like.

945

45:52 ,350 --> 00:45:56,610

Developed this came probably later

though is like Sam Elliott is like always

946

45:56 ,610 --> 00:46:03,379

been mustache the mustache thing just

think I think I'm on my early crushes

947

46:03 ,379 --> 00:46:05,289

were mostly on mustaches not people.

948

46:07 ,610 --> 00:46:07,840

So

949

46:08 ,090 --> 00:46:08,889

he's got a

950

46:08 ,889 --> 00:46:10,989

Laura Murphy: magnum p. I uh.

951

46:12 ,555 --> 00:46:16,425

I remember being in sixth grade and

there was a girl, I think there, I

952

46:16 ,425 --> 00:46:19,525

think the statute of limitations has

expired so I can talk about this.

953

46:19 ,915 --> 00:46:24,124

Um, but as far as this, this girl, you

know, not statute of limitations, but

954

46:24 ,124 --> 00:46:25,515

I don't think I'm embarrassing anyone.

955

46:26 ,145 --> 00:46:27,565

And she had a notebook.

956

46:28 ,115 --> 00:46:34,845

Like a binder and she had a love of Tom

Selleck and it was like clipping out

957

46:34 ,845 --> 00:46:36,214

like from people magazine and stuff.

958

46:36 ,214 --> 00:46:38,114

It's like, or we switched

desks or something.

959

46:38 ,125 --> 00:46:38,835

I was like, what's this?

960

46:38 ,855 --> 00:46:40,025

And I went through, I was like, Holy crap.

961

46:40 ,294 --> 00:46:41,475

She loves Tom Selleck.

962

46:41 ,525 --> 00:46:41,605

It's an

963

46:41 ,605 --> 00:46:42,195

Laura Murphy: obsession.

964

46:42 ,205 --> 00:46:42,535

But

965

46:42 ,645 --> 00:46:44,224

Laura Murphy: I was like, so

many other people were just like

966

46:44 ,235 --> 00:46:46,384

mustache, swim trunks, mystery.

967

46:47 ,065 --> 00:46:47,685

This is breakthrough.

968

46:48 ,455 --> 00:46:51,175

I remember being, you know,

when those kind of short shorts

969

46:51 ,415 --> 00:46:52,955

were like the thing, you know.

970

46:53 ,025 --> 00:46:57,265

Laura Murphy: I imagine on the cutting

room floor of the Magnum PI show, there

971

46:57 ,265 --> 00:47:02,130

are so many shots of his, uh, private

parts that had, they were like, this thing

972

47:02 ,130 --> 00:47:04,243

was a shot, and something slipped out.

973

47:04 ,243 --> 00:47:04,875

Like, there's

974

47:06 ,280 --> 00:47:08,830

We're going to limit the sitting

shots to, you know, you're going

975

47:08 ,830 --> 00:47:10,995

to be standing in this one and

976

47:10 ,995 --> 00:47:12,129

Laura Murphy: diving.

977

47:12 ,130 --> 00:47:15,250

I was like, there's no way stuff

didn't fall out regularly that

978

47:15 ,420 --> 00:47:16,920

some editor has seen a lot of

979

47:16 ,940 --> 00:47:21,220

that's in, in, for those listening who,

you know, have not seen the old Magnum

980

47:21 ,380 --> 00:47:24,439

PI and how short, short the shorts

were, you know, it was something else.

981

47:24 Island Essentials: Movies and Music

47:24 ,645 --> 00:47:27,535

Now the next question I got for you

is if you're going to be forced to

982

47:27 ,545 --> 00:47:30,735

live in an island, it's, it's kind

of sticking with Magnum PI, but it's

983

47:30 ,735 --> 00:47:33,455

an exotic island somewhere you want

to be, but there's no streaming.

984

47:34 ,035 --> 00:47:35,225

You'd be there for a whole year.

985

47:35 ,225 --> 00:47:38,264

So if you want to watch a

movie, you got to bring one DVD.

986

47:38 ,445 --> 00:47:40,914

If you want to listen to music,

you've got to bring one CD.

987

47:41 ,455 --> 00:47:44,365

What would that DVD and what would

that CD be for that year for you?

988

47:44 ,435 --> 00:47:46,215

Something you watch and

listen to over and over

989

47:46 ,215 --> 00:47:46,415

Laura Murphy: again.

990

47:46 ,775 --> 00:47:48,355

Can it be a box set or

it's just got to be one?

991

47:48 ,355 --> 00:47:48,555

Yeah,

992

47:48 ,555 --> 00:47:49,145

absolutely.

993

47:49 ,325 --> 00:47:50,085

Absolutely.

994

47:50 ,685 --> 00:47:53,780

Laura Murphy: I mean, I'm kind

of torn because I could watch The

995

47:53 ,780 --> 00:47:57,660

Godfather like a billion times

and never get tired of it I think.

996

47:57 ,660 --> 00:47:58,150

I mean.

997

47:58 ,160 --> 00:47:58,880

Which one though?

998

47:58 ,910 --> 00:47:59,590

The first one.

999

47:59 ,620 --> 00:48:00,954

The original one.

Speaker:1000

48:03 ,095 --> 00:48:05,935

And I could probably watch that

and every time I watch it I feel

Speaker:1001

48:05 ,935 --> 00:48:08,205

like I see something else and then

last time I just watched it with

Speaker:1002

48:08 ,205 --> 00:48:11,144

the sound off just as an experiment

and I Was like noticing more stuff.

Speaker:1003

48:11 ,145 --> 00:48:14,874

So I feel like I want to say the

Godfather, but then also like talking

Speaker:1004

48:14 ,874 --> 00:48:19,624

about binging I remember getting the

box set for Arrested Development after

Speaker:1005

48:19 ,625 --> 00:48:23,745

it had come and gone from TV and nobody

really the watched on TV that much and

Speaker:1006

48:24 ,375 --> 00:48:28,770

staying up all night, watch it like all

through the day and then all through the

Speaker:1007

48:28 ,770 --> 00:48:33,460

night watching all of, I guess it was

only two seasons of it or three seasons.

Speaker:1008

48:33 ,580 --> 00:48:36,399

It was, I guess the whole original

three seasons watching all of

Speaker:1009

48:36 ,400 --> 00:48:39,389

Arrested Development and, and

being like, this is the most

Speaker:1010

48:39 ,410 --> 00:48:40,580

brilliant thing I've ever watched.

Speaker:1011

48:40 ,600 --> 00:48:42,010

There's nothing else like this on TV.

Speaker:1012

48:42 ,029 --> 00:48:45,460

And I can, I go back and still

watch those original seasons of

Speaker:1013

48:45 ,460 --> 00:48:46,680

Arrested Development over and over.

Speaker:1014

48:46 ,910 --> 00:48:48,780

So I feel like it would

depend on the island.

Speaker:1015

48:48 ,970 --> 00:48:53,129

If it was like a fun island where I

wanted to laugh and have fun, then I would

Speaker:1016

48:53 ,129 --> 00:48:54,669

pick the Arrested Development box set.

Speaker:1017

48:54 ,669 --> 00:48:59,210

If it was like, Uh, off Washington or

off British Columbia, and it was like

Speaker:1018

48:59 ,360 --> 00:49:03,420

fall, cold, winter, and maybe I'd watch

The Godfather over and over again.

Speaker:1019

49:03 ,470 --> 00:49:04,220

Like beautiful.

Speaker:1020

49:04 ,370 --> 00:49:04,450

I

Speaker:1021

49:04 ,460 --> 00:49:04,600

gotcha.

Speaker:1022

49:04 ,929 --> 00:49:06,050

Of course, the rest of the development.

Speaker:1023

49:06 ,050 --> 00:49:08,800

All roads seem to be leading

to Jason Bateman, you know, so.

Speaker:1024

49:08 ,980 --> 00:49:11,560

Laura Murphy: I guess my point is my

whole life is about Jason Bateman.

Speaker:1025

49:12 ,720 --> 00:49:14,960

Musically, what would you,

uh, what would your jam

Speaker:1026

49:14 ,970 --> 00:49:15,070

Laura Murphy: be?

Speaker:1027

49:16 ,255 --> 00:49:17,175

That's hard.

Speaker:1028

49:17 ,445 --> 00:49:22,715

I mean, because I kind of listen to

all different sorts of music, but if

Speaker:1029

49:22 ,715 --> 00:49:26,255

I had to just pick one thing, I went

through a real big Tom Petty phase

Speaker:1030

49:26 ,264 --> 00:49:28,735

where, no, I'm going to take that back.

Speaker:1031

49:29 ,135 --> 00:49:29,485

You know what?

Speaker:1032

49:29 ,485 --> 00:49:31,024

I like a story song.

Speaker:1033

49:31 ,115 --> 00:49:31,635

I like us.

Speaker:1034

49:31 ,695 --> 00:49:33,115

I'm a lyrics person.

Speaker:1035

49:33 ,215 --> 00:49:40,010

So I love, uh, when there's some sort

of like, Metaphors or a story, which

Speaker:1036

49:40 ,010 --> 00:49:44,470

is like, of course, why I like Taylor

Swift, I would, if I just had to listen

Speaker:1037

49:44 ,470 --> 00:49:49,060

to one artist the whole time, I think

with the most story songs and the most

Speaker:1038

49:49 ,110 --> 00:49:51,520

songs, I maybe it would be Elvis Costello.

Speaker:1039

49:51 ,530 --> 00:49:53,380

I think that's who I would bring with me.

Speaker:1040

49:53 ,649 --> 00:49:54,790

Loved Tom Petty.

Speaker:1041

49:54 ,800 --> 00:49:59,000

If I listened to him when I was like 17,

but then, you know, I started listening.

Speaker:1042

49:59 ,080 --> 00:50:03,220

I think I saw a documentary like running

down a dream or like the documentary

Speaker:1043

50:03 ,220 --> 00:50:05,419

that, uh, what's his name made about?

Speaker:1044

50:06 ,295 --> 00:50:09,085

I kind of got into it and then

was like, Oh, Tom Petty's awesome.

Speaker:1045

50:09 ,115 --> 00:50:14,825

And like I used to hate thin Lizzie

and now I love thin Lizzie weirdly.

Speaker:1046

50:14 ,855 --> 00:50:18,224

So like I do feel like

because my husband likes it.

Speaker:1047

50:18 ,235 --> 00:50:18,395

Well, I

Speaker:1048

50:18 ,395 --> 00:50:19,985

think you start listening

to music differently.

Speaker:1049

50:19 ,985 --> 00:50:22,025

You start hearing the lyrics

maybe a little bit more.

Speaker:1050

50:22 ,034 --> 00:50:24,744

You start, you know, identifying

with a little bit more.

Speaker:1051

50:24 Perfect Day and Simple Luxuries

50:24 ,855 --> 00:50:27,945

Now, if you were to say from stem to

start from the time you get up to the

Speaker:1052

50:27 ,945 --> 00:50:32,275

time you go to sleep, what are the

component parts for you for a perfect day?

Speaker:1053

50:32 ,725 --> 00:50:33,365

Laura Murphy: Oh wow.

Speaker:1054

50:34 ,785 --> 00:50:37,495

I mean, I think, If I get to sleep past 6.

Speaker:1055

50:37 ,495 --> 00:50:41,155

45 any day, it's already starting

off great, because I have a toddler,

Speaker:1056

50:41 ,155 --> 00:50:45,244

so it's like, I'm just yelling mommy

at the top of my lungs at like 6.

Speaker:1057

50:45 ,244 --> 00:50:50,575

40 every day, so, Um, I love, if I

could sleep in a tiny bit, but I don't

Speaker:1058

50:50 ,575 --> 00:50:54,554

really sleep past 8am, I'm just not

wired that way, I'm a morning person.

Speaker:1059

50:54 ,905 --> 00:50:57,355

Um, my husband's a night person,

which was great when we had a

Speaker:1060

50:57 ,355 --> 00:51:01,095

baby because we could alternate,

but, uh, I like to get up early.

Speaker:1061

51:01 ,205 --> 00:51:04,895

I like to take a walk on the beach

because we live close to the beach now.

Speaker:1062

51:04 ,985 --> 00:51:12,454

So, like, get a little water view in

and then, uh, eat something outdoors.

Speaker:1063

51:13 ,694 --> 00:51:17,495

And then any sort of quality time

I can have in front of a fireplace.

Speaker:1064

51:18 ,015 --> 00:51:20,885

That would be, that would

be a part of the day.

Speaker:1065

51:21 ,865 --> 00:51:27,365

Um, ideally do something creatively

expressive, so I don't feel guilty about

Speaker:1066

51:27 ,365 --> 00:51:29,185

not doing anything creatively expressive.

Speaker:1067

51:29 ,185 --> 00:51:30,595

So get some writing done.

Speaker:1068

51:31 ,355 --> 00:51:34,565

And then, probably like a hot bath.

Speaker:1069

51:34 ,615 --> 00:51:39,235

I don't have a hot tub, but I feel like I,

like, I always say like I don't want to be

Speaker:1070

51:39 ,245 --> 00:51:42,811

rich rich, I just want to be hot tub rich,

where I can afford to have a hot tub.

Speaker:1071

51:42 ,811 --> 00:51:46,315

Like I want to afford a

hot tub and a neck lift.

Speaker:1072

51:46 ,355 --> 00:51:47,755

That's like all I really want.

Speaker:1073

51:48 ,320 --> 00:51:49,220

That's as rich as I want to be.

Speaker:1074

51:49 ,240 --> 00:51:49,540

Hot

Speaker:1075

51:49 ,550 --> 00:51:50,110

tub rich.

Speaker:1076

51:50 ,180 --> 00:51:50,450

Yeah.

Speaker:1077

51:50 ,480 --> 00:51:51,900

You know, it's, it's, Hey, you know what?

Speaker:1078

51:51 ,940 --> 00:51:52,640

I like that.

Speaker:1079

51:52 ,640 --> 00:51:54,310

Cause that's a specific thing.

Speaker:1080

51:54 ,320 --> 00:51:57,829

You know, you know, some people

it's like they, to where they can

Speaker:1081

51:57 ,830 --> 00:51:59,850

have a certain appliance at home.

Speaker:1082

52:00 ,010 --> 00:52:03,340

Like, you know, I told my kids, you

know, I was like next, you know,

Speaker:1083

52:03 ,350 --> 00:52:05,970

if I'm moving to a place where I

can kind of build it out the way

Speaker:1084

52:05 ,970 --> 00:52:07,330

I want, I want a trash compactor.

Speaker:1085

52:07 ,380 --> 00:52:09,210

I don't know why my grandparents had one.

Speaker:1086

52:09 ,530 --> 00:52:10,690

It seems very efficient.

Speaker:1087

52:10 ,710 --> 00:52:11,330

You know, I don't know.

Speaker:1088

52:11 ,330 --> 00:52:14,280

It's just a randomness,

you know, that we got.

Speaker:1089

52:14 ,485 --> 00:52:15,565

Laura Murphy: A garage fridge.

Speaker:1090

52:15 ,615 --> 00:52:17,685

Like that was like the sign

of wealth when I was a kid.

Speaker:1091

52:17 ,685 --> 00:52:19,655

It was like, Oh, the people

had a fridge in their garage.

Speaker:1092

52:19 ,685 --> 00:52:20,295

They made it.

Speaker:1093

52:20 ,335 --> 00:52:21,595

So like, it's like, you

Speaker:1094

52:21 ,605 --> 00:52:23,245

know, like, Oh, there's no

beer in your refrigerator.

Speaker:1095

52:23 ,245 --> 00:52:24,065

Oh, let's go to the garage.

Speaker:1096

52:24 ,585 --> 00:52:25,685

Laura Murphy: You know, exactly.

Speaker:1097

52:25 ,775 --> 00:52:27,135

Let me show you my collection.

Speaker:1098

52:28 ,025 --> 00:52:30,005

Laura Murphy: And then I

would read my kid books.

Speaker:1099

52:30 ,250 --> 00:52:33,570

And he would go to sleep and, and that

would be, I'd spend some time with him.

Speaker:1100

52:33 ,570 --> 00:52:34,390

That would be a perfect day.

Speaker:1101

52:34 ,390 --> 00:52:36,400

I had to get the mention

of the kid in the case.

Speaker:1102

52:36 ,400 --> 00:52:38,220

He's sometimes house listens

to this when he's 17.

Speaker:1103

52:40 ,619 --> 00:52:43,999

Yeah, this is, it's funny because

I know I'm creating a, uh, kind of

Speaker:1104

52:44 ,000 --> 00:52:46,509

a, a, uh, a library, if you will.

Speaker:1105

52:46 ,509 --> 00:52:47,160

And my, my.

Speaker:1106

52:47 ,255 --> 00:52:51,255

Goal is my kids, you know, actually I had

a syndicated show on ABC radio and the

Speaker:1107

52:51 ,255 --> 00:52:54,895

only thing they remember that we had a

beautiful atrium is a beautiful building,

Speaker:1108

52:54 ,915 --> 00:52:56,204

you know, and had a little Creek in it.

Speaker:1109

52:56 ,255 --> 00:52:59,345

And they remember, and they came there

during Christmas time and they had

Speaker:1110

52:59 ,365 --> 00:53:01,215

animatronic, like I was owned by Disney.

Speaker:1111

53:01 ,215 --> 00:53:03,494

So they had cool stuff, uh,

like these little, I don't know.

Speaker:1112

53:03 ,495 --> 00:53:04,175

It was just, it was neat.

Speaker:1113

53:05 ,054 --> 00:53:09,405

And also the, uh, the, the,

the security guard who always

Speaker:1114

53:09 ,415 --> 00:53:11,005

bring them cool coloring books.

Speaker:1115

53:11 ,075 --> 00:53:12,015

And that's all they remember.

Speaker:1116

53:12 ,015 --> 00:53:12,575

They don't remember.

Speaker:1117

53:12 ,665 --> 00:53:16,195

Anything of me doing, I'm like,

Hey, I got this podcast thing now.

Speaker:1118

53:16 ,225 --> 00:53:20,915

And in my son checks it out, my

oldest daughter, she, she's 21.

Speaker:1119

53:20 ,925 --> 00:53:24,335

So she, you know, she, she's some, I

think she's heard an episode or two.

Speaker:1120

53:24 ,335 --> 00:53:27,585

She's been here while I've had done

interviews, but my youngest one, she's

Speaker:1121

53:27 ,585 --> 00:53:31,375

like, it would be pure accident if she

ever hears an episode, there's no way.

Speaker:1122

53:31 ,375 --> 00:53:33,835

But I'm like, one day they can go listen.

Speaker:1123

53:33 ,835 --> 00:53:36,355

Like, Oh, this is a little

bit more of what he was about.

Speaker:1124

53:36 ,355 --> 00:53:39,835

This is his thing, purely

aspirational, of course.

Speaker:1125

53:40 Alternative Careers and Detective Dreams

53:40 ,365 --> 00:53:43,040

Um, Now, if you weren't doing

this for a living, this was not

Speaker:1126

53:43 ,040 --> 00:53:47,190

an option for you, what could you

see yourself doing as a vocation?

Speaker:1127

53:47 ,730 --> 00:53:49,460

Laura Murphy: I would

love to be a detective.

Speaker:1128

53:49 ,520 --> 00:53:55,500

I don't know how good I'd be at it

because I don't like bloody crime stuff,

Speaker:1129

53:55 ,510 --> 00:54:01,959

but I would love, I think it's like the

nosiness in me, it would like solve that.

Speaker:1130

54:01 ,959 --> 00:54:04,920

I'd be like interested

in doing detective work.

Speaker:1131

54:04 ,940 --> 00:54:07,780

The problem is I think a lot of

detectives now mostly find cheaters,

Speaker:1132

54:07 ,790 --> 00:54:09,040

which I'm not that interested in.

Speaker:1133

54:09 ,050 --> 00:54:10,790

Like I want to solve real mysteries.

Speaker:1134

54:11 ,210 --> 00:54:13,210

So I think I would want to be a detective.

Speaker:1135

54:13 ,565 --> 00:54:15,275

That seems super cool to me.

Speaker:1136

54:15 ,905 --> 00:54:17,895

It seems super cool to

me cause I don't do it.

Speaker:1137

54:18 ,805 --> 00:54:20,475

If I was doing it, I'd

probably be like, this is hard.

Speaker:1138

54:20 ,485 --> 00:54:24,585

A lot of people, there's a lot of

crime, but it's seems really awesome.

Speaker:1139

54:25 Advice to Younger Self

54:25 ,104 --> 00:54:28,205

Now the last question I've got for you,

if you have the ability to jump into

Speaker:1140

54:28 ,205 --> 00:54:32,295

that DeLorean travel back, 16 year old

you, you've got a piece of advice you

Speaker:1141

54:32 ,295 --> 00:54:36,225

want to leave with yourself to make that

moment in your life somehow better or

Speaker:1142

54:36 ,225 --> 00:54:39,225

put yourself on a little bit different

trajectory, what would that piece of

Speaker:1143

54:39 ,225 --> 00:54:42,285

advice be to younger 16 year old you?

Speaker:1144

54:43 ,225 --> 00:54:45,175

Laura Murphy: I mean, the first

thing I think would be like,

Speaker:1145

54:45 ,194 --> 00:54:47,224

wear shorts and tank tops.

Speaker:1146

54:47 ,294 --> 00:54:49,145

Why are you so self

conscious about your body?

Speaker:1147

54:49 ,145 --> 00:54:53,135

Cause it's like You're because you're

not gonna be able to wear tank tops

Speaker:1148

54:53 ,135 --> 00:54:57,105

at a certain age like enjoy it stop

being self conscious about it I think

Speaker:1149

54:57 ,105 --> 00:55:00,304

I grew up so awkward and like body

conscious and it's like looking back.

Speaker:1150

55:00 ,335 --> 00:55:04,165

It's like I was super great shape

Like that's crazy Why did I spend

Speaker:1151

55:04 ,165 --> 00:55:08,125

so much time and energy wasted on

worrying about like my physical stature

Speaker:1152

55:08 ,134 --> 00:55:10,014

like just to have fun play sports?

Speaker:1153

55:10 ,064 --> 00:55:11,924

Do it, you know wear shorts

Speaker:1154

55:12 ,135 --> 00:55:14,245

It's gotta be worse for young ladies now.

Speaker:1155

55:14 ,605 --> 00:55:15,445

Instagram and all.

Speaker:1156

55:15 ,475 --> 00:55:19,085

I just, you know, that's,

you know, I'm so glad that

Speaker:1157

55:19 ,085 --> 00:55:20,335

Laura Murphy: didn't

exist when I was a kid.

Speaker:1158

55:20 ,335 --> 00:55:21,065

Social media.

Speaker:1159

55:21 ,175 --> 00:55:23,395

I'm, and when I was in college,

Speaker:1160

55:23 ,515 --> 00:55:26,585

I'm, I'm glad that phones didn't

exist with, with cameras and

Speaker:1161

55:26 ,604 --> 00:55:28,005

video and stuff like that.

Speaker:1162

55:28 ,005 --> 00:55:29,764

Cause that in a way I

kind of wish they did.

Speaker:1163

55:29 ,784 --> 00:55:32,325

Cause I'd love to go back and

watch some stuff and other stuff.

Speaker:1164

55:32 ,325 --> 00:55:33,555

I'm like, thank God they didn't get that.

Speaker:1165

55:33 ,985 --> 00:55:35,325

But that does make a lot of sense.

Speaker:1166

55:35 ,325 --> 00:55:38,185

You know, the, the, uh, the

self consciousness we have when

Speaker:1167

55:38 ,185 --> 00:55:41,160

you're younger and you go, you

know, Going back to the idea.

Speaker:1168

55:41 ,160 --> 00:55:41,480

Fuck it.

Speaker:1169

55:41 ,520 --> 00:55:43,250

You know, younger, just do it.

Speaker:1170

55:44 ,580 --> 00:55:47,160

Laura Murphy: And all of that energy

could have gone into, I mean, like,

Speaker:1171

55:47 ,160 --> 00:55:50,220

look, I got lucky that I kind of

fell into a career that was what

Speaker:1172

55:50 ,220 --> 00:55:51,950

I realized I always dreamed of.

Speaker:1173

55:52 ,209 --> 00:55:56,070

But I, I feel like if I had taken

all the energy I put into worrying

Speaker:1174

55:56 ,070 --> 00:56:00,260

about, uh, people, what people thought

or what I looked like into creative

Speaker:1175

56:00 ,260 --> 00:56:03,180

endeavors, I probably, maybe I would

have gotten to it a little quicker.

Speaker:1176

56:03 ,500 --> 00:56:07,420

Um, and I feel like that's the other

advice I would give is like, don't worry

Speaker:1177

56:07 ,460 --> 00:56:11,550

so much about what people think you

should do or what people think of you.

Speaker:1178

56:11 ,580 --> 00:56:15,659

If you feel strongly about

something or if you have a creative

Speaker:1179

56:15 ,660 --> 00:56:17,280

vision, like just, just do it.

Speaker:1180

56:17 ,300 --> 00:56:19,299

Don't worry about what people think.

Speaker:1181

56:19 ,370 --> 00:56:21,870

It kind of kills creativity worrying

about what other people are thinking.

Speaker:1182

56:22 ,110 --> 00:56:24,270

And quite frankly, they're not

probably even thinking about you.

Speaker:1183

56:24 ,570 --> 00:56:25,220

They're not at all.

Speaker:1184

56:25 ,220 --> 00:56:25,730

Laura Murphy: It's whatever.

Speaker:1185

56:25 ,730 --> 00:56:26,190

And like.

Speaker:1186

56:27 ,005 --> 00:56:30,965

It's still an on, the people

pleaser in me is still something

Speaker:1187

56:30 ,965 --> 00:56:32,515

I'm constantly trying to squash.

Speaker:1188

56:32 ,525 --> 00:56:36,595

Which, because it doesn't, it often

gets in the way of, as a director,

Speaker:1189

56:36 ,595 --> 00:56:38,284

it gets in the way of my career.

Speaker:1190

56:38 ,345 --> 00:56:40,795

And, and, and my job, and it's just.

Speaker:1191

56:41 ,200 --> 00:56:45,040

Something that is a lifelong

process of squashing the people.

Speaker:1192

56:45 ,040 --> 00:56:46,670

Please are part of myself.

Speaker:1193

56:46 ,820 --> 00:56:49,690

And, uh, that's something

I'm still working on.

Speaker:1194

56:49 ,720 --> 00:56:52,440

So I feel like if I could have gotten

a headstart on it, maybe I would have

Speaker:1195

56:52 ,460 --> 00:56:55,140

kicked it by 40 instead of still working.

Speaker:1196

56:55 ,320 --> 00:56:55,350

But

Speaker:1197

56:55 ,970 --> 00:56:58,920

now, you know, but now, you know,

and now you, you know, you know,

Speaker:1198

56:58 ,920 --> 00:57:00,290

bet no better, you can do better.

Speaker:1199

57:00 ,990 --> 00:57:01,459

You know, but.

Speaker:1200

57:01 ,780 --> 00:57:06,980

Um, so, uh, jazz that, uh, you know, the

F Mary kill is, is, is such a fun concept.

Speaker:1201

57:07 ,050 --> 00:57:09,970

You know, it's kind of cool to

actually speak with the individual

Speaker:1202

57:09 ,970 --> 00:57:11,510

who helped pull all this together.

Speaker:1203

57:11 ,570 --> 00:57:14,069

You know, well, thank you so much.

Speaker:1204

57:14 ,090 --> 00:57:16,320

I really appreciate you sharing,

uh, sharing your day with

Speaker:1205

57:16 ,320 --> 00:57:18,894

me here, especially with it.

Speaker:1206

57:18 ,894 --> 00:57:23,380

With a toddler around, you know,

being able to carve out some time,

Speaker:1207

57:23 ,390 --> 00:57:24,660

that's, that's pretty awesome.

Speaker:1208

57:24 ,660 --> 00:57:25,080

But, uh,

Speaker:1209

57:25 ,950 --> 00:57:28,260

Laura Murphy: I just had a meeting

weirdly right before this with Billy

Speaker:1210

57:28 ,260 --> 00:57:29,880

Magnuson, who has been a guest on this.

Speaker:1211

57:31 ,125 --> 00:57:32,745

He was the most chill dude.

Speaker:1212

57:32 ,795 --> 00:57:36,585

Uh, again, we're bringing it back to Jason

Bateman again, but a game, game night.

Speaker:1213

57:36 ,645 --> 00:57:36,995

Laura Murphy: Yes.

Speaker:1214

57:36 ,995 --> 00:57:39,245

One of the best movies ever made.

Speaker:1215

57:39 ,525 --> 00:57:40,825

That's a great action comedy.

Speaker:1216

57:40 ,934 --> 00:57:44,445

That, and then went right to

doing, uh, like it was an HBO film,

Speaker:1217

57:44 ,514 --> 00:57:46,635

uh, where he played a, uh, Nazi.

Speaker:1218

57:46 ,944 --> 00:57:47,184

Right.

Speaker:1219

57:47 ,185 --> 00:57:48,094

It was like the Holocaust.

Speaker:1220

57:48 ,284 --> 00:57:48,534

Yeah.

Speaker:1221

57:48 ,534 --> 00:57:49,205

Laura Murphy: It was like a drama.

Speaker:1222

57:49 ,315 --> 00:57:50,665

And it's a James Bond.

Speaker:1223

57:50 ,675 --> 00:57:52,855

He's so versatile, but

he's the most chill dude.

Speaker:1224

57:52 ,855 --> 00:57:54,975

I, I still Marc him down

as being one of the most.

Speaker:1225

57:55 ,535 --> 00:57:58,550

Enjoyable chats, you know, I've had in

a long time, but, uh, yeah, he's great.

Speaker:1226

57:58 ,715 --> 00:58:00,335

But next, next to next to you.

Speaker:1227

58:00 ,335 --> 00:58:00,935

Oh, thank you.

Speaker:1228

58:00 ,935 --> 00:58:03,545

Yes, . Well, thank you so much.

Speaker:1229

58:03 ,575 --> 00:58:04,625

Uh, it's been a pleasure.

Speaker:1230

58:04 ,715 --> 00:58:06,725

Hopefully we have a chance

to catch up down the line.

Speaker:1231

58:06 ,755 --> 00:58:07,055

Laura Murphy: Yes.

Speaker:1232

58:09 ,575 --> 00:58:10,025

All right.

Speaker:1233

58:10 ,025 --> 00:58:10,535

There you go.

Speaker:1234

58:10 ,535 --> 00:58:13,385

Laura Murphy really

enjoyed the conversation.

Speaker:1235

58:13 ,415 --> 00:58:15,570

The new movie is called F Mary.

Speaker:1236

58:17 ,130 --> 00:58:19,820

It's got Lucy Hale in

it, Virginia Gardner.

Speaker:1237

58:20 ,060 --> 00:58:22,620

In fact, Virginia is going

to be on the show on Friday.

Speaker:1238

58:22 ,630 --> 00:58:26,800

So, again, it's F. Mary Kill

Week here on Story Craft.
