Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters

This week on Story & Craft, we sit down with Academy Award and Golden Globe winner, Billy Bob Thornton.  Billy needs no introduction, as he’s been on the scene for quite a while.  His body of work is extensive, and includes big and small screen projects, such as Slingblade, Bad Santa, The Man Who Wasn’t There, The Alamo, Fargo, Goliath and most recently, the Paramount+ show, 1883.  Billy is also a talented and accomplished musician.  In 2007, Billy connected with JD Andrew to form the group, The Boxmasters.  This spring, Billy and JD will release their latest album, “Help…I’m Alive”, as well as hit the road for a tour that will keep rolling into summer.  Join me for this episode, as we get to know Billy Bob Thornton and JD Andrew, and talk music, touring and how the creative process compares to making movies.

Speaker:

Billy Bob Thornton: It's like well, how can I tell this story

2

00:00:05,651 --> 00:00:06,512

Billy Bob Thornton: in three or four minutes?

3

00:00:06,552 --> 00:00:07,374

Billy Bob Thornton: Where's the screenplay?

4

00:00:07,600 --> 00:00:09,969

Billy Bob Thornton: It's like how can I keep this story going?

5

00:00:10,060 --> 00:00:12,589

Billy Bob Thornton: Because I could tell it in 30 pages, you

6

00:00:12,609 --> 00:00:12,789

Billy Bob Thornton: know.

7

00:00:14,063 --> 00:00:15,709

Announcer: Welcome to Story and Craft.

Marc Preston: So glad to have you here.

13

00:00:25,762 --> 00:00:29,643

Marc Preston: If this is your first time, welcome, going

14

00:00:29,723 --> 00:00:30,968

Marc Preston: to have some fun here.

15

00:00:31,060 --> 00:00:33,545

Marc Preston: Glad you can join in Gonna, have some great

16

00:00:33,606 --> 00:00:36,003

Marc Preston: conversation momentarily and, of course, if

17

00:00:36,063 --> 00:00:38,911

Marc Preston: you are coming back after listening to some

18

00:00:38,971 --> 00:00:41,960

Marc Preston: previous episodes, thank you, welcome back.

19

00:00:42,302 --> 00:00:44,779

Marc Preston: Glad to have you as part of the tribe, as

20

00:00:44,799 --> 00:00:44,980

Marc Preston: it were.

21

00:00:45,903 --> 00:00:47,769

Marc Preston: Today is a really cool day.

22

00:00:48,944 --> 00:00:51,333

Marc Preston: I had a chance to sit down with an Academy

23

00:00:51,373 --> 00:00:53,843

Marc Preston: Award winner, golden Globe winner, billy

24

00:00:53,883 --> 00:00:54,647

Marc Preston: Bob Thornton.

25

00:00:55,582 --> 00:00:57,047

Marc Preston: He doesn't need any introduction.

26

00:00:57,107 --> 00:00:58,993

Marc Preston: I mean, come on, now, it's Billy Bob.

27

00:00:59,564 --> 00:01:01,557

Marc Preston: Of course I had to introduce my kids to

28

00:01:01,597 --> 00:01:04,975

Marc Preston: Billy Bob and I did that by kicking on

29

00:01:05,055 --> 00:01:06,762

Marc Preston: Friday Night Lights and that was kind of

30

00:01:06,802 --> 00:01:09,791

Marc Preston: cool because it just registered with me.

31

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:13,169

Marc Preston: I had never seen the movie until I watched

32

00:01:13,189 --> 00:01:16,046

Marc Preston: it with my kids and that was kind of odd.

33

00:01:16,086 --> 00:01:17,269

Marc Preston: How did that movie slip by?

34

00:01:17,350 --> 00:01:19,384

Marc Preston: I don't know, but of course he's been in

35

00:01:19,424 --> 00:01:22,846

Marc Preston: Sling Blade, bad Santa, the man who Wasn't

36

00:01:22,946 --> 00:01:25,783

Marc Preston: there, the Alamo, fargo, goliath and, most

37

00:01:25,843 --> 00:01:27,849

Marc Preston: recently, the Paramount Plus show.

38

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:30,562

Marc Preston: My new favorite show right now is 1883, and

39

00:01:30,602 --> 00:01:32,308

Marc Preston: my son, zachary, and I checked it out,

40

00:01:33,581 --> 00:01:34,403

Marc Preston: loving that show.

41

00:01:34,483 --> 00:01:37,269

Marc Preston: And Billy Bob showed up, did not disappoint,

42

00:01:37,330 --> 00:01:38,252

Marc Preston: knocked it out of the park.

43

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:41,808

Marc Preston: Now Billy Bob, or, of course, bud, as he

44

00:01:41,868 --> 00:01:44,525

Marc Preston: likes to be called, is not only a talented

45

00:01:44,665 --> 00:01:45,007

Marc Preston: actor.

46

00:01:45,127 --> 00:01:47,866

Marc Preston: We all know that it's obvious he's a rock

47

00:01:47,906 --> 00:01:48,087

Marc Preston: star.

48

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:50,546

Marc Preston: But he is a genuine rock star.

49

00:01:51,321 --> 00:01:54,043

Marc Preston: He's an accomplished musician and back in

50

00:01:54,083 --> 00:01:57,060

Marc Preston: 2007, billy connected with JD Andrew and

51

00:01:57,080 --> 00:02:00,261

Marc Preston: they formed the group the Boxmasters, and

52

00:02:00,784 --> 00:02:03,417

Marc Preston: this spring, billy and JD will release

53

00:02:03,477 --> 00:02:06,356

Marc Preston: their latest album, help I'm Alive, as well

54

00:02:06,456 --> 00:02:06,980

Marc Preston: as Hit the Road.

55

00:02:07,561 --> 00:02:10,007

Marc Preston: They're going to be doing a tour that's

56

00:02:10,047 --> 00:02:12,272

Marc Preston: going to have them touring all the way into

57

00:02:12,292 --> 00:02:12,693

Marc Preston: the summer.

58

00:02:13,040 --> 00:02:15,839

Marc Preston: So if you can check out the Boxmasters on

59

00:02:15,859 --> 00:02:19,256

Marc Preston: tour, pick up the new CD or download it.

60

00:02:19,276 --> 00:02:21,205

Marc Preston: Showing my age here we go.

61

00:02:23,711 --> 00:02:25,000

Marc Preston: So this is a great talk.

62

00:02:25,682 --> 00:02:27,587

Marc Preston: Billy Bob Thornton, jd Andrew.

63

00:02:27,668 --> 00:02:28,951

Marc Preston: We are talking music.

64

00:02:29,564 --> 00:02:31,517

Marc Preston: How does creating music compare to writing

65

00:02:31,537 --> 00:02:31,960

Marc Preston: a movie?

66

00:02:32,987 --> 00:02:34,758

Marc Preston: Of course Billy Bob knows a thing or two

67

00:02:34,779 --> 00:02:37,215

Marc Preston: about that, considering he won an Academy

68

00:02:37,255 --> 00:02:37,980

Marc Preston: Award for doing it.

Marc Preston: All right, now let's not waste any more

89

00:03:24,471 --> 00:03:24,772

Marc Preston: time.

90

00:03:24,852 --> 00:03:26,646

Marc Preston: I want to get right into it, having some

91

00:03:26,706 --> 00:03:26,987

Marc Preston: fun.

92

00:03:27,809 --> 00:03:31,196

Marc Preston: Billy Bob Thornton, jd Andrew they are the

93

00:03:31,236 --> 00:03:32,118

Marc Preston: Boxmasters.

94

00:03:32,465 --> 00:03:35,034

Marc Preston: It's Boxmasters Day right here on Story and

95

00:03:35,074 --> 00:03:39,029

Marc Preston: Craft First, out out of the gate,

96

00:03:39,069 --> 00:03:40,775

Marc Preston: congratulations, A new album coming out

97

00:03:40,945 --> 00:03:42,792

Marc Preston: Always kind of exciting and, in the other

98

00:03:42,812 --> 00:03:44,467

Marc Preston: case, of the nerves whenever a record is

99

00:03:44,507 --> 00:03:47,736

Marc Preston: about to roll out or after doing this.

100

00:03:47,756 --> 00:03:49,249

Marc Preston: So long, you're just like, all right, it's

101

00:03:49,289 --> 00:03:49,490

Marc Preston: cool.

102

00:03:49,650 --> 00:03:50,794

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, we're always hopeful.

103

00:03:51,305 --> 00:03:51,807

JD Andrew: And it's not.

104

00:03:51,967 --> 00:03:54,014

JD Andrew: You know we're not nervous because you know

105

00:03:55,305 --> 00:03:56,489

JD Andrew: we made it and we like it.

106

00:03:56,689 --> 00:03:58,194

JD Andrew: So you know we're just happy that you know

107

00:03:58,234 --> 00:03:59,056

JD Andrew: we've got the copies.

108

00:03:59,225 --> 00:04:01,310

JD Andrew: I'm more nervous about actually getting the

109

00:04:01,391 --> 00:04:05,248

JD Andrew: physical copies, you know, in hand, because

110

00:04:05,469 --> 00:04:08,886

JD Andrew: sometimes we're like during the pandemic we

111

00:04:08,926 --> 00:04:10,952

JD Andrew: were, you know, setting up another record

112

00:04:11,273 --> 00:04:15,392

JD Andrew: and you know there was a one of the one of

113

00:04:15,432 --> 00:04:19,246

JD Andrew: the lacker places in Japan burned down and

114

00:04:19,286 --> 00:04:21,071

JD Andrew: you know there was all of a sudden it was

115

00:04:21,091 --> 00:04:23,828

JD Andrew: like hard to get a vinyl pressed and you

116

00:04:23,868 --> 00:04:25,313

JD Andrew: know I would call all these places and

117

00:04:25,333 --> 00:04:27,229

JD Andrew: they'd be like it's 14 months to get a

118

00:04:27,269 --> 00:04:28,072

JD Andrew: record pressed.

119

00:04:28,152 --> 00:04:29,516

JD Andrew: It's like goodness.

120

00:04:30,105 --> 00:04:30,888

Marc Preston: With the pandemic.

121

00:04:30,908 --> 00:04:33,896

Marc Preston: How did y'all be at recording, or you know

122

00:04:34,125 --> 00:04:34,426

Marc Preston: what did it.

123

00:04:34,968 --> 00:04:36,834

Marc Preston: Was it like logistically difficult for you

124

00:04:36,874 --> 00:04:37,075

Marc Preston: at all?

125

00:04:37,525 --> 00:04:39,573

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, it was actually pretty easy.

126

00:04:40,949 --> 00:04:42,875

Billy Bob Thornton: I mean, once the studio's opened back up,

127

00:04:42,925 --> 00:04:44,751

Billy Bob Thornton: we would pour it over at Henson, which is

128

00:04:44,771 --> 00:04:47,927

Billy Bob Thornton: the old A&M studios Until now we have our

129

00:04:47,988 --> 00:04:48,850

Billy Bob Thornton: own.

130

00:04:49,671 --> 00:04:51,596

Billy Bob Thornton: But we actually made three records during

131

00:04:51,616 --> 00:04:52,598

Billy Bob Thornton: the lockdown.

132

00:04:53,025 --> 00:04:54,832

Billy Bob Thornton: So it was, you know, we were pretty

133

00:04:54,852 --> 00:04:55,394

Billy Bob Thornton: productive.

134

00:04:56,605 --> 00:04:58,610

Billy Bob Thornton: Touring obviously was a challenge.

135

00:04:59,954 --> 00:05:01,017

JD Andrew: We went on non-existent.

136

00:05:03,250 --> 00:05:04,292

Billy Bob Thornton: We went out last year.

137

00:05:04,373 --> 00:05:05,495

Billy Bob Thornton: We had 43 shows.

138

00:05:05,575 --> 00:05:08,452

Billy Bob Thornton: We got through 21 of them and then we got

139

00:05:08,472 --> 00:05:08,934

Billy Bob Thornton: shut down.

140

00:05:09,195 --> 00:05:11,664

Billy Bob Thornton: So we're looking forward to going out this

141

00:05:11,685 --> 00:05:14,096

Billy Bob Thornton: year because we're going to do makeup shows

142

00:05:14,136 --> 00:05:15,623

Billy Bob Thornton: for a lot of those dates that we missed

143

00:05:15,643 --> 00:05:16,025

Billy Bob Thornton: last year.

144

00:05:16,606 --> 00:05:19,834

Billy Bob Thornton: But in terms of recording once the studio

145

00:05:19,914 --> 00:05:22,259

Billy Bob Thornton: opened back up, we did pretty well.

146

00:05:22,987 --> 00:05:24,394

Marc Preston: Now, do you record out of your studio or

147

00:05:24,434 --> 00:05:27,571

Marc Preston: like your own personal studio, or do you

148

00:05:27,611 --> 00:05:29,384

Marc Preston: like to actually go into a session studio

149

00:05:29,404 --> 00:05:29,585

Marc Preston: to record?

150

00:05:30,326 --> 00:05:31,469

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, we've done both.

151

00:05:31,910 --> 00:05:35,547

Billy Bob Thornton: I had a studio back in the like, I think,

152

00:05:35,607 --> 00:05:42,919

Billy Bob Thornton: 99 through like 2013 or 14, and 12.

153

00:05:44,569 --> 00:05:47,487

Billy Bob Thornton: I don't remember dates that well and so,

154

00:05:48,829 --> 00:05:52,557

Billy Bob Thornton: and then after that we recorded at Henson

155

00:05:52,597 --> 00:05:57,773

Billy Bob Thornton: for years and now just recently, last May,

156

00:05:58,916 --> 00:06:02,329

Billy Bob Thornton: we got our own studio, which is called

157

00:06:02,349 --> 00:06:07,358

Billy Bob Thornton: Peppertree Hill Studios and it's outside of

158

00:06:07,378 --> 00:06:11,128

Billy Bob Thornton: LA, and that's where we are right now and

159

00:06:11,148 --> 00:06:12,552

Billy Bob Thornton: we're actually working on a new record

160

00:06:12,592 --> 00:06:13,635

Billy Bob Thornton: before we go on tour.

161

00:06:14,065 --> 00:06:16,052

Marc Preston: So we started rehearsals for the tour on

162

00:06:16,072 --> 00:06:17,948

Marc Preston: the 30th and we're trying to get to

163

00:06:17,968 --> 00:06:20,186

Marc Preston: Stricard and stuff before we go Well, did

164

00:06:20,206 --> 00:06:21,831

Marc Preston: you step into a studio space that was

165

00:06:21,911 --> 00:06:23,667

Marc Preston: already put together, or did you kind of

166

00:06:23,847 --> 00:06:25,392

Marc Preston: just get a space and kind of build it out

167

00:06:25,412 --> 00:06:26,274

Marc Preston: the way you wanted it to?

168

00:06:27,186 --> 00:06:30,818

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, it was already a studio and it's not

169

00:06:30,898 --> 00:06:34,257

Billy Bob Thornton: like a like, if you saw it, it's not like a

170

00:06:34,358 --> 00:06:35,025

Billy Bob Thornton: home studio.

171

00:06:35,165 --> 00:06:37,593

Billy Bob Thornton: I mean, it's a separate building from the

172

00:06:37,634 --> 00:06:39,553

Billy Bob Thornton: house, like the house is up on a hill and

173

00:06:39,593 --> 00:06:42,025

Billy Bob Thornton: then down the hill is this studio building

174

00:06:42,105 --> 00:06:44,473

Billy Bob Thornton: and it's 2,200 square feet.

175

00:06:45,246 --> 00:06:46,852

Billy Bob Thornton: So it's a real life.

176

00:06:47,025 --> 00:06:50,000

JD Andrew: Oh no, this is a righteous, you know,

177

00:06:50,181 --> 00:06:52,832

JD Andrew: recording studio, and the great thing is

178

00:06:53,013 --> 00:06:55,905

JD Andrew: that when we came into it it was completely

179

00:06:55,925 --> 00:06:56,025

JD Andrew: empty.

180

00:06:56,768 --> 00:06:58,917

JD Andrew: I mean, it had been remodeled and

181

00:06:58,977 --> 00:07:01,847

JD Andrew: completely redone by the previous owner and,

182

00:07:02,088 --> 00:07:04,734

JD Andrew: you know they did an amazing job at making

183

00:07:04,814 --> 00:07:08,911

JD Andrew: it a beautiful place, and so all we had to

184

00:07:08,951 --> 00:07:11,216

JD Andrew: do was move in our stuff and we got a lot

185

00:07:11,257 --> 00:07:11,597

JD Andrew: of stuff.

186

00:07:13,633 --> 00:07:14,437

Marc Preston: Now for you, jd.

187

00:07:14,658 --> 00:07:16,988

Marc Preston: Since you came from engineering, do you

188

00:07:17,048 --> 00:07:17,449

Marc Preston: prefer?

189

00:07:18,051 --> 00:07:20,186

Marc Preston: I mean, obviously you enjoy performing, but

190

00:07:20,226 --> 00:07:22,618

Marc Preston: do you like to actually do the editing or

191

00:07:22,678 --> 00:07:24,828

Marc Preston: do you like to be performing, or is it kind

192

00:07:24,848 --> 00:07:26,453

Marc Preston: of an equal thing for you?

193

00:07:27,247 --> 00:07:29,005

JD Andrew: It's kind of all the same thing for me.

194

00:07:29,386 --> 00:07:33,435

JD Andrew: I mean, you know, yeah, I had just intended

195

00:07:33,515 --> 00:07:36,168

JD Andrew: on being a recording engineer, and you know,

196

00:07:36,188 --> 00:07:37,873

JD Andrew: until Billy said, hey, how well do you play

197

00:07:37,913 --> 00:07:39,807

JD Andrew: guitar one day, when we were, you know,

198

00:07:40,068 --> 00:07:42,715

JD Andrew: finishing up his fourth solo record.

199

00:07:43,205 --> 00:07:45,753

JD Andrew: And so, you know, one of the things is, you

200

00:07:45,793 --> 00:07:49,773

JD Andrew: know, I'm we've had other engineers, you

201

00:07:49,793 --> 00:07:52,849

JD Andrew: know, help us out and at the same time,

202

00:07:52,890 --> 00:07:55,316

JD Andrew: it's like, you know, I'm kind of a control

203

00:07:55,356 --> 00:07:59,392

JD Andrew: freak and I just, you know, it's like we

204

00:07:59,433 --> 00:08:02,567

JD Andrew: know how we want things to sound Right, and

205

00:08:02,607 --> 00:08:05,961

JD Andrew: so it's like the cool thing is that we can

206

00:08:06,001 --> 00:08:08,068

JD Andrew: make things sound how we want and we don't

207

00:08:08,088 --> 00:08:09,714

JD Andrew: have to relay it to another person.

208

00:08:10,065 --> 00:08:12,340

Marc Preston: Yeah, with the nature of the music, it's

209

00:08:12,381 --> 00:08:14,132

Marc Preston: got a very distinctive sound and I'd say

210

00:08:14,152 --> 00:08:15,824

Marc Preston: I've kind of I've heard some things here

211

00:08:15,844 --> 00:08:17,410

Marc Preston: and there but I kind of introduced myself

212

00:08:17,450 --> 00:08:19,566

Marc Preston: to a lot more of your library and I really

213

00:08:20,468 --> 00:08:24,056

Marc Preston: I dig it and the DNA of it is very it's 50s,

214

00:08:24,257 --> 00:08:26,810

Marc Preston: 60s I think, the British invasion type of

215

00:08:26,850 --> 00:08:27,051

Marc Preston: thing.

216

00:08:27,733 --> 00:08:28,876

Marc Preston: What was the impetus for that?

217

00:08:29,306 --> 00:08:31,351

Marc Preston: How did Billy Bob, how did you all come

218

00:08:31,371 --> 00:08:33,596

Marc Preston: together with that being the sound?

219

00:08:34,045 --> 00:08:34,928

Marc Preston: Even though you're no longer doing solo,

220

00:08:34,948 --> 00:08:36,473

Marc Preston: you're actually going to be a band.

221

00:08:37,045 --> 00:08:38,369

Marc Preston: How did you come up with that idea of being?

222

00:08:38,429 --> 00:08:39,853

Marc Preston: This is going to be the sound of my band.

223

00:08:41,045 --> 00:08:43,316

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, initially it started with a sort of

224

00:08:43,437 --> 00:08:45,566

Billy Bob Thornton: experimental thing we were doing where JD

225

00:08:45,607 --> 00:08:48,194

Billy Bob Thornton: and I were just talking and the first song

226

00:08:48,234 --> 00:08:50,962

Billy Bob Thornton: we cut when we decided to have a band out

227

00:08:51,042 --> 00:08:53,814

Billy Bob Thornton: of this because JD and I were working in

228

00:08:53,834 --> 00:08:56,967

Billy Bob Thornton: the studio on the solo record of mine he

229

00:08:57,007 --> 00:09:00,475

Billy Bob Thornton: was engineering and when we decided to

230

00:09:00,615 --> 00:09:03,293

Billy Bob Thornton: record some stuff together, the first song

231

00:09:03,334 --> 00:09:06,168

Billy Bob Thornton: we actually recorded, when we said okay,

232

00:09:06,288 --> 00:09:08,634

Billy Bob Thornton: this is real once we started playing around,

233

00:09:10,566 --> 00:09:12,392

Billy Bob Thornton: was a Chad and Jeremy song called

234

00:09:12,412 --> 00:09:16,109

Billy Bob Thornton: Yesterday's Gone and with you know what,

235

00:09:17,432 --> 00:09:19,336

Billy Bob Thornton: what if we married Bill Bill music and the

236

00:09:19,356 --> 00:09:20,117

Billy Bob Thornton: British invasion?

237

00:09:21,065 --> 00:09:23,471

Billy Bob Thornton: And so the first two records well,

238

00:09:23,511 --> 00:09:25,155

Billy Bob Thornton: including a Christmas record the first

239

00:09:25,175 --> 00:09:29,393

Billy Bob Thornton: three they were they don't really sound

240

00:09:29,454 --> 00:09:30,677

Billy Bob Thornton: like we sound now.

241

00:09:31,526 --> 00:09:32,850

Billy Bob Thornton: I mean now we just sound like a band is

242

00:09:32,890 --> 00:09:34,555

Billy Bob Thornton: influenced by the birds and the beetles and

243

00:09:34,615 --> 00:09:37,029

Billy Bob Thornton: people, but kinks and people like that.

244

00:09:37,109 --> 00:09:41,156

Billy Bob Thornton: But once we got through those couple of

245

00:09:41,216 --> 00:09:46,073

Billy Bob Thornton: records we started to just play like we

246

00:09:46,093 --> 00:09:47,376

Billy Bob Thornton: play and write like we write.

247

00:09:48,045 --> 00:09:51,292

Billy Bob Thornton: But you know, the band was really formed

248

00:09:51,573 --> 00:09:54,486

Billy Bob Thornton: out of that sort of idea of you know what,

249

00:09:54,546 --> 00:09:57,094

Billy Bob Thornton: if we take all of our influences and put

250

00:09:57,114 --> 00:09:58,967

Billy Bob Thornton: them into one thing and we both, you know,

251

00:09:58,987 --> 00:10:02,476

Billy Bob Thornton: like sort of old time, sort of Bill Bill

252

00:10:02,496 --> 00:10:06,474

Billy Bob Thornton: music, but we're both freaks over the

253

00:10:06,494 --> 00:10:07,937

Billy Bob Thornton: British invasion.

254

00:10:08,025 --> 00:10:09,710

Marc Preston: Now, what you were coming up was that when

255

00:10:09,730 --> 00:10:11,074

Marc Preston: you were younger, was that the thing you

256

00:10:11,094 --> 00:10:11,715

Marc Preston: were listening to?

257

00:10:12,045 --> 00:10:13,190

Marc Preston: Was that the inspiration for you when you

258

00:10:13,210 --> 00:10:13,672

Marc Preston: were a kid?

259

00:10:14,025 --> 00:10:14,848

Marc Preston: Sure, absolutely.

260

00:10:16,025 --> 00:10:17,713

Billy Bob Thornton: Now, I mean, just like everybody, my age,

261

00:10:17,754 --> 00:10:19,583

Billy Bob Thornton: you know, when we saw the beetles on the Ed

262

00:10:19,603 --> 00:10:20,005

Billy Bob Thornton: Sullivan show.

263

00:10:20,186 --> 00:10:20,747

Billy Bob Thornton: That was it.

264

00:10:20,888 --> 00:10:22,232

Billy Bob Thornton: I mean, you know, that's the thing.

265

00:10:23,105 --> 00:10:24,652

Billy Bob Thornton: So you know, I was a fan of the beetles and

266

00:10:24,672 --> 00:10:27,523

Billy Bob Thornton: the kinks and the animals and you know

267

00:10:27,563 --> 00:10:28,025

Billy Bob Thornton: people like that.

268

00:10:28,486 --> 00:10:31,637

Billy Bob Thornton: They part five and I was, you know,

269

00:10:31,677 --> 00:10:33,604

Billy Bob Thornton: obsessed with all that stuff and you know

270

00:10:34,707 --> 00:10:37,234

Billy Bob Thornton: the fan magazines and the whole deal.

271

00:10:38,827 --> 00:10:40,832

Billy Bob Thornton: So yeah, I mean that's mainly where my

272

00:10:40,852 --> 00:10:43,466

Billy Bob Thornton: musical influences came from, as well as

273

00:10:43,486 --> 00:10:46,371

Billy Bob Thornton: the Southern California pop, rock music,

274

00:10:46,672 --> 00:10:50,659

Billy Bob Thornton: the Stix T's and the Memphis style.

275

00:10:51,506 --> 00:10:52,709

Marc Preston: Yeah, I kind of picked up on that little

276

00:10:52,769 --> 00:10:54,814

Marc Preston: DNA bit of the Southern California thing

277

00:10:54,875 --> 00:10:55,576

Marc Preston: from back in the day.

278

00:10:56,025 --> 00:10:57,710

Marc Preston: And when I say it's an interesting library,

279

00:10:57,991 --> 00:10:58,893

Marc Preston: it's kind of unexpected.

280

00:10:58,933 --> 00:11:00,587

Marc Preston: From each track to the next I'm like okay,

281

00:11:00,727 --> 00:11:02,313

Marc Preston: it kind of invites you into the album.

282

00:11:03,025 --> 00:11:04,709

JD Andrew: Well, another thing Billy didn't mention

283

00:11:04,769 --> 00:11:09,266

JD Andrew: was, you know, he is a huge Zappa fan and

284

00:11:09,346 --> 00:11:10,650

JD Andrew: so, you know, between the Mothers in

285

00:11:10,710 --> 00:11:13,887

JD Andrew: Invention and Frank Zappa there's that kind

286

00:11:13,948 --> 00:11:16,194

JD Andrew: of thread weaving through all this pop

287

00:11:16,234 --> 00:11:16,515

JD Andrew: music.

288

00:11:17,025 --> 00:11:18,929

JD Andrew: So there'll be a little element of

289

00:11:20,352 --> 00:11:22,777

JD Andrew: bizarroness, or you know, or, like you know,

290

00:11:25,128 --> 00:11:27,333

JD Andrew: you know, there'll be some beef heartness,

291

00:11:27,534 --> 00:11:29,306

JD Andrew: you know, or something you know just be

292

00:11:29,907 --> 00:11:31,853

JD Andrew: just something that twists things just a

293

00:11:31,893 --> 00:11:32,836

JD Andrew: hair, you know.

294

00:11:33,025 --> 00:11:36,431

JD Andrew: So it's, you know it's not something that

295

00:11:36,471 --> 00:11:40,658

JD Andrew: you really, you know notice without you

296

00:11:40,678 --> 00:11:43,569

JD Andrew: know really digging into it, but you know

297

00:11:43,609 --> 00:11:44,932

JD Andrew: there's that and you know.

298

00:11:44,972 --> 00:11:46,757

JD Andrew: Then there's also the Southern rock stuff.

299

00:11:47,025 --> 00:11:48,529

JD Andrew: You know the Almond Brothers and whatnot.

300

00:11:48,589 --> 00:11:52,105

JD Andrew: That you know it's not as prevalent but

301

00:11:52,125 --> 00:11:53,028

JD Andrew: there's still that.

302

00:11:53,489 --> 00:11:53,749

JD Andrew: You know.

303

00:11:53,890 --> 00:11:56,316

JD Andrew: All of these influences mixed together, you

304

00:11:56,356 --> 00:11:59,272

JD Andrew: know the British Invasion, southern Rock,

305

00:12:00,858 --> 00:12:02,563

JD Andrew: the Beach Boys, you know it's all these

306

00:12:02,583 --> 00:12:02,985

JD Andrew: things together.

307

00:12:03,547 --> 00:12:05,013

JD Andrew: That's, you know, that's the stuff that we

308

00:12:05,053 --> 00:12:05,575

JD Andrew: listen to.

309

00:12:06,238 --> 00:12:08,025

JD Andrew: That you know comes out when we play a song

310

00:12:08,672 --> 00:12:09,602

JD Andrew: or when we write a song.

311

00:12:10,105 --> 00:12:11,608

Marc Preston: It's really curious for me, especially to

312

00:12:11,668 --> 00:12:11,948

Marc Preston: you all.

313

00:12:12,008 --> 00:12:13,591

Marc Preston: Is there like a division of a king to be

314

00:12:13,611 --> 00:12:15,414

Marc Preston: doing the writing on the doing work on the

315

00:12:15,434 --> 00:12:15,674

Marc Preston: music?

316

00:12:15,694 --> 00:12:16,936

Marc Preston: Are you all just kind of bounce back and

317

00:12:16,976 --> 00:12:18,739

Marc Preston: forth and who's who's writing and who's

318

00:12:19,725 --> 00:12:21,369

Marc Preston: who's doing the who's doing the tune, and

319

00:12:21,389 --> 00:12:22,411

Marc Preston: kind of a two part question.

320

00:12:22,471 --> 00:12:23,994

Marc Preston: Is what comes first for y'all, kind of

321

00:12:24,014 --> 00:12:24,676

Marc Preston: chicken or the egg?

322

00:12:24,736 --> 00:12:27,288

Marc Preston: Is it a lyric the pops in your mind, or is

323

00:12:27,328 --> 00:12:29,113

Marc Preston: it kind of a lick on the guitar that kind

324

00:12:29,133 --> 00:12:30,957

Marc Preston: of inspires you to take off into a song?

325

00:12:31,245 --> 00:12:33,051

Billy Bob Thornton: What happens all those ways?

326

00:12:33,271 --> 00:12:34,455

Billy Bob Thornton: You know it's never.

327

00:12:34,475 --> 00:12:38,292

Billy Bob Thornton: You know, sometimes it's a, it's a lick,

328

00:12:38,553 --> 00:12:40,718

Billy Bob Thornton: sometimes it's a melody with a few lines,

329

00:12:42,206 --> 00:12:45,573

Billy Bob Thornton: sometimes one of us has a verse and then we

330

00:12:46,235 --> 00:12:47,798

Billy Bob Thornton: try to come up with a bridge in a chorus.

331

00:12:49,126 --> 00:12:50,668

Billy Bob Thornton: So it happens all kind of different ways

332

00:12:50,748 --> 00:12:53,213

Billy Bob Thornton: and the ones that come out, we usually know

333

00:12:53,293 --> 00:12:55,256

Billy Bob Thornton: pretty instantly if this is going to be a

334

00:12:55,296 --> 00:12:58,907

Billy Bob Thornton: song for us or not, and you know we usually

335

00:12:58,927 --> 00:12:59,969

Billy Bob Thornton: agree on everything.

336

00:13:00,189 --> 00:13:04,495

Billy Bob Thornton: So you know it's a and you know we

337

00:13:04,555 --> 00:13:11,346

Billy Bob Thornton: generally will, you know, sort of Give in

338

00:13:11,386 --> 00:13:12,908

Billy Bob Thornton: to the other one if we think it's a better

339

00:13:12,968 --> 00:13:13,188

Billy Bob Thornton: idea.

340

00:13:13,208 --> 00:13:15,031

Billy Bob Thornton: It's like we want the best idea.

341

00:13:15,552 --> 00:13:17,735

Billy Bob Thornton: You know, if somebody has a better idea,

342

00:13:17,755 --> 00:13:19,778

Billy Bob Thornton: the other one usually says, yeah, you're

343

00:13:19,798 --> 00:13:23,488

Billy Bob Thornton: right, we should do that, and but songs

344

00:13:23,588 --> 00:13:25,271

Billy Bob Thornton: come, you know, a lot of time.

345

00:13:25,351 --> 00:13:28,256

Billy Bob Thornton: I would say, more often than not we have a

346

00:13:28,357 --> 00:13:31,242

Billy Bob Thornton: melody and a few words, or either a chorus

347

00:13:31,362 --> 00:13:32,624

Billy Bob Thornton: or a verse or something, and that's how

348

00:13:32,644 --> 00:13:33,025

Billy Bob Thornton: they usually start.

349

00:13:34,029 --> 00:13:36,279

Marc Preston: What is a parallel for you storytelling

350

00:13:36,319 --> 00:13:37,565

Marc Preston: screenplay to writing a song?

351

00:13:38,870 --> 00:13:40,377

Marc Preston: What are the similarities and what are the

352

00:13:40,558 --> 00:13:41,763

Marc Preston: distinct differences between the two of

353

00:13:41,783 --> 00:13:42,065

Marc Preston: those things?

354

00:13:43,006 --> 00:13:46,591

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, one of the main differences is that

355

00:13:46,811 --> 00:13:50,316

Billy Bob Thornton: with a screenplay you have, you know, 90

356

00:13:50,576 --> 00:13:54,221

Billy Bob Thornton: something to 120 something pages to develop

357

00:13:54,341 --> 00:13:54,782

Billy Bob Thornton: everything.

358

00:13:55,726 --> 00:13:59,171

Billy Bob Thornton: So you know, oftentimes with a screenplay

359

00:14:00,073 --> 00:14:00,914

Billy Bob Thornton: you have to.

360

00:14:01,575 --> 00:14:04,520

Billy Bob Thornton: Usually you have the first act and the last

361

00:14:04,680 --> 00:14:06,804

Billy Bob Thornton: act in the middle always sags.

362

00:14:06,884 --> 00:14:07,685

Billy Bob Thornton: That's what you have to work on.

363

00:14:07,705 --> 00:14:10,229

Billy Bob Thornton: So, in other words, you have so much time

364

00:14:10,310 --> 00:14:14,036

Billy Bob Thornton: in a screenplay that you're struggling to

365

00:14:14,157 --> 00:14:16,361

Billy Bob Thornton: make to keep it afloat the whole way,

366

00:14:17,106 --> 00:14:19,693

Billy Bob Thornton: whereas with a song you got three or four

367

00:14:19,773 --> 00:14:21,417

Billy Bob Thornton: minutes that you're trying to tell an

368

00:14:21,477 --> 00:14:25,130

Billy Bob Thornton: entire story and so you're actually trying

369

00:14:25,170 --> 00:14:26,554

Billy Bob Thornton: to squeeze in everything.

370

00:14:26,914 --> 00:14:30,203

Billy Bob Thornton: You know it's not, it doesn't let up,

371

00:14:30,443 --> 00:14:31,145

Billy Bob Thornton: there's not a lag in it.

372

00:14:32,828 --> 00:14:34,211

Billy Bob Thornton: Instead you've got too much.

373

00:14:34,231 --> 00:14:36,395

Billy Bob Thornton: It's like well, how can I tell the story

374

00:14:36,476 --> 00:14:38,119

Billy Bob Thornton: three or four minutes, where the screenplay

375

00:14:38,139 --> 00:14:40,383

Billy Bob Thornton: it's like how can I keep the story going?

376

00:14:40,423 --> 00:14:43,549

Billy Bob Thornton: Because I could tell it 30 pages, you know.

377

00:14:44,772 --> 00:14:47,157

Billy Bob Thornton: So those are differences.

378

00:14:47,278 --> 00:14:50,585

Billy Bob Thornton: I mean, you know music, ideally, and movies

379

00:14:52,209 --> 00:14:54,554

Billy Bob Thornton: Should both have a rhythm to them.

380

00:14:54,654 --> 00:14:57,280

Billy Bob Thornton: You know, obviously, music, but, but movies

381

00:14:57,300 --> 00:14:59,365

Billy Bob Thornton: do too, and that's why good editors are

382

00:14:59,384 --> 00:15:04,292

Billy Bob Thornton: priceless, you know, because at the end of

383

00:15:04,312 --> 00:15:06,756

Billy Bob Thornton: the day, you know, acting should have a

384

00:15:06,796 --> 00:15:07,036

Billy Bob Thornton: rhythm.

385

00:15:07,898 --> 00:15:09,881

Billy Bob Thornton: Writing a screenplay has a rhythm, you know,

386

00:15:10,061 --> 00:15:12,024

Billy Bob Thornton: and so in that way they're very similar.

387

00:15:20,116 --> 00:15:21,438

Marc Preston: I've heard of people saying that they wrote

388

00:15:21,478 --> 00:15:23,161

Marc Preston: a screenplay over a weekend is crank.

389

00:15:23,181 --> 00:15:24,924

Marc Preston: That other people fuss over for months and

390

00:15:24,984 --> 00:15:25,225

Marc Preston: months.

391

00:15:25,265 --> 00:15:26,714

Marc Preston: Now, between the two of y'all, when it

392

00:15:26,754 --> 00:15:29,891

Marc Preston: comes to writing songs, is it something Do

393

00:15:29,911 --> 00:15:32,256

Marc Preston: y'all suffer from, like vapor lock, like I

394

00:15:32,296 --> 00:15:33,839

Marc Preston: can't think of anything, or do you just

395

00:15:33,859 --> 00:15:35,583

Marc Preston: have a plethora of stuff just coming out of

396

00:15:35,603 --> 00:15:36,184

Marc Preston: you all the time?

397

00:15:37,632 --> 00:15:39,138

Billy Bob Thornton: It's there's there's a.

398

00:15:40,571 --> 00:15:43,597

JD Andrew: There's really not, unless we're, you know,

399

00:15:43,657 --> 00:15:45,871

JD Andrew: if we're on tour or you know there's

400

00:15:45,931 --> 00:15:47,275

JD Andrew: something really going on.

401

00:15:47,335 --> 00:15:49,081

JD Andrew: You know that's taking our attention.

402

00:15:50,051 --> 00:15:52,372

JD Andrew: You know there's there's song writing.

403

00:15:52,613 --> 00:15:53,034

JD Andrew: You know there's.

404

00:15:53,275 --> 00:15:56,262

JD Andrew: You know, and if if a song is hard to like

405

00:15:56,870 --> 00:15:59,197

JD Andrew: Create, then that one gets put away and

406

00:15:59,218 --> 00:16:01,391

JD Andrew: then something else Starts.

407

00:16:01,972 --> 00:16:04,037

JD Andrew: You know we don't sit around and slave over.

408

00:16:04,158 --> 00:16:07,631

JD Andrew: You know a song and you're like, oh, you

409

00:16:07,651 --> 00:16:09,658

JD Andrew: know really work and like craft it.

410

00:16:09,859 --> 00:16:11,083

JD Andrew: You know it's like.

411

00:16:11,344 --> 00:16:15,239

JD Andrew: You know inspiration and you know just pure,

412

00:16:15,360 --> 00:16:17,556

JD Andrew: you know Spur of the moment, like this

413

00:16:17,636 --> 00:16:19,653

JD Andrew: feels good, what's record?

414

00:16:20,055 --> 00:16:22,883

JD Andrew: And so if it's not feeling good and if it's

415

00:16:22,963 --> 00:16:24,969

JD Andrew: not inspiring us, you know let's move to

416

00:16:24,989 --> 00:16:25,410

JD Andrew: the next thing.

417

00:16:25,610 --> 00:16:26,915

JD Andrew: We got plenty of other stuff.

418

00:16:27,116 --> 00:16:28,822

Marc Preston: So how do you like to record as far as?

419

00:16:28,843 --> 00:16:30,629

Marc Preston: Do you like to like like the lay individual

420

00:16:30,669 --> 00:16:32,336

Marc Preston: tracks or do you like the kind of the zen

421

00:16:32,376 --> 00:16:33,802

Marc Preston: of just getting in and doing it live?

422

00:16:34,003 --> 00:16:35,570

Marc Preston: You're both going at the same time now,

423

00:16:35,710 --> 00:16:38,077

Marc Preston: there's, there's, yeah there's two of us.

424

00:16:38,197 --> 00:16:40,952

Marc Preston: So I mean we true, that's yeah process.

425

00:16:41,193 --> 00:16:43,574

JD Andrew: You know where, yeah, we'll, we'll cut the

426

00:16:43,634 --> 00:16:43,995

JD Andrew: original.

427

00:16:44,035 --> 00:16:45,599

JD Andrew: You know the, the very basic.

428

00:16:45,659 --> 00:16:47,952

JD Andrew: You know scratch Guitar.

429

00:16:48,394 --> 00:16:51,454

JD Andrew: We started doing scratch piano and vocal.

430

00:16:51,615 --> 00:16:53,665

JD Andrew: You know it's like get the, the arrangement

431

00:16:53,705 --> 00:16:54,549

JD Andrew: of the song down.

432

00:16:54,569 --> 00:16:56,576

JD Andrew: You know Like where, where is this song

433

00:16:56,596 --> 00:16:58,611

JD Andrew: starting and where's it ending, and then

434

00:16:58,631 --> 00:16:59,996

JD Andrew: we'll start putting tracks on it.

435

00:17:00,337 --> 00:17:04,193

JD Andrew: So you know it'll be, uh, you know, an

436

00:17:04,233 --> 00:17:05,817

JD Andrew: acoustic guitar and a vocal and then we'll

437

00:17:05,837 --> 00:17:07,641

JD Andrew: start, you know, with drums and bass and

438

00:17:07,681 --> 00:17:10,436

JD Andrew: then you know, as we go, just build it up.

439

00:17:11,211 --> 00:17:14,793

JD Andrew: But you know it's, it's, you know, really

440

00:17:15,355 --> 00:17:17,320

JD Andrew: pretty quick process for us, you know, to

441

00:17:17,360 --> 00:17:21,435

JD Andrew: start a song, from the time it's even, you

442

00:17:21,455 --> 00:17:23,936

JD Andrew: know, being written and finished being

443

00:17:23,976 --> 00:17:26,913

JD Andrew: written to, you know, by the end of the

444

00:17:26,973 --> 00:17:28,798

JD Andrew: night usually we have pretty much

445

00:17:28,878 --> 00:17:30,002

JD Andrew: everything we're going to put on.

446

00:17:30,470 --> 00:17:31,654

Marc Preston: But y'all been together long enough, y'all

447

00:17:31,674 --> 00:17:32,577

Marc Preston: probably have a shorthand.

448

00:17:32,617 --> 00:17:34,771

Marc Preston: Y'all can kind of communicate almost yeah.

449

00:17:36,570 --> 00:17:38,497

Billy Bob Thornton: We've been working together since 2006 or

450

00:17:38,537 --> 00:17:43,192

Billy Bob Thornton: seven, so you know we've got, you know

451

00:17:43,352 --> 00:17:44,678

Billy Bob Thornton: we're kind of old hands at it.

452

00:17:44,738 --> 00:17:48,036

Billy Bob Thornton: Now we do have a process and it's always

453

00:17:48,116 --> 00:17:48,778

Billy Bob Thornton: worked for us.

454

00:17:49,460 --> 00:17:52,954

Billy Bob Thornton: And uh, so we're, you know, fairly

455

00:17:52,994 --> 00:17:54,718

Billy Bob Thornton: efficient machine these days.

456

00:17:54,738 --> 00:17:56,121

Billy Bob Thornton: You know, we, we just have to have the

457

00:17:56,181 --> 00:17:59,239

Billy Bob Thornton: inspiration, like to say I mean, you know,

458

00:17:59,339 --> 00:18:02,133

Billy Bob Thornton: usually if a song doesn't pop out Uh,

459

00:18:02,333 --> 00:18:04,198

Billy Bob Thornton: immediately, in our case anyway, it's

460

00:18:04,239 --> 00:18:06,003

Billy Bob Thornton: probably something wrong with it.

461

00:18:06,043 --> 00:18:08,296

Billy Bob Thornton: So, oh, we move on.

462

00:18:08,356 --> 00:18:11,016

Billy Bob Thornton: But, but the recording process itself.

463

00:18:11,136 --> 00:18:14,693

Billy Bob Thornton: I mean, you know, I'm the luckiest band guy

464

00:18:14,713 --> 00:18:17,434

Billy Bob Thornton: in the world because my partner in the band

465

00:18:17,474 --> 00:18:19,580

Billy Bob Thornton: is a world-class recording engineer.

466

00:18:20,122 --> 00:18:22,008

Marc Preston: So there's a lot of efficiency built into

467

00:18:22,028 --> 00:18:22,590

Marc Preston: that process.

468

00:18:22,710 --> 00:18:23,835

Marc Preston: I'm sure you know it's.

469

00:18:23,896 --> 00:18:25,061

Marc Preston: You can, because you can think of, like the

470

00:18:25,141 --> 00:18:26,507

Marc Preston: post, what's going to happen and you can

471

00:18:26,527 --> 00:18:28,554

Marc Preston: kind of fix it, you know, as you're doing

472

00:18:28,614 --> 00:18:28,674

Marc Preston: it.

473

00:18:28,754 --> 00:18:31,421

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, yeah, we have a thing, J D Is it?

474

00:18:31,522 --> 00:18:34,236

Billy Bob Thornton: You know we don't have anybody else that we

475

00:18:34,276 --> 00:18:36,872

Billy Bob Thornton: have to convey our vision to, Like.

476

00:18:36,892 --> 00:18:39,125

Billy Bob Thornton: The vision is coming from the people who

477

00:18:39,186 --> 00:18:40,874

Billy Bob Thornton: are recording it, so you don't have a bunch

478

00:18:40,994 --> 00:18:43,112

Billy Bob Thornton: of other people in the middle that you have

479

00:18:43,152 --> 00:18:45,118

Billy Bob Thornton: to get to understand what you're trying to

480

00:18:45,158 --> 00:18:45,439

Billy Bob Thornton: get.

481

00:18:45,600 --> 00:18:48,214

Billy Bob Thornton: You know, and when we're not getting it, we

482

00:18:48,254 --> 00:18:48,575

Billy Bob Thornton: know it.

483

00:18:49,016 --> 00:18:50,459

Billy Bob Thornton: And you know we can look at each other and

484

00:18:50,480 --> 00:18:53,258

Billy Bob Thornton: go, ah, maybe we need to, we need to add

485

00:18:53,541 --> 00:18:54,731

Billy Bob Thornton: this, take that away by.

486

00:18:54,831 --> 00:18:57,699

Billy Bob Thornton: You know we need to recut it whatever it is.

487

00:18:57,739 --> 00:19:00,472

Billy Bob Thornton: You know we're pretty In agreement on that

488

00:19:00,492 --> 00:19:00,753

Billy Bob Thornton: stuff.

489

00:19:00,773 --> 00:19:02,657

JD Andrew: Yeah, I mean, we know ourselves, you know,

490

00:19:02,697 --> 00:19:04,841

JD Andrew: we know what we're always pushing ourselves,

491

00:19:05,022 --> 00:19:08,492

JD Andrew: you know, to like, you know, do something

492

00:19:08,532 --> 00:19:08,934

JD Andrew: better.

493

00:19:09,034 --> 00:19:11,000

JD Andrew: You know like, you know, not necessarily

494

00:19:11,080 --> 00:19:13,731

JD Andrew: fancier, but you know like having you know

495

00:19:13,751 --> 00:19:16,299

JD Andrew: a certain sound to the way we play and you

496

00:19:16,319 --> 00:19:20,371

JD Andrew: know one of the ways you know we Try to

497

00:19:20,411 --> 00:19:20,652

JD Andrew: keep.

498

00:19:20,712 --> 00:19:22,656

JD Andrew: You know, the band sounding live, you know,

499

00:19:22,716 --> 00:19:24,741

JD Andrew: as a two-piece band who's just stacking

500

00:19:24,801 --> 00:19:26,713

JD Andrew: things on top Is, you know we'll.

501

00:19:27,054 --> 00:19:29,332

JD Andrew: We'll just hit, start, you know Hit record

502

00:19:29,372 --> 00:19:31,838

JD Andrew: at the top of the song and play it from top

503

00:19:31,878 --> 00:19:32,319

JD Andrew: to bottom.

504

00:19:32,580 --> 00:19:33,783

JD Andrew: You know we're not sitting there.

505

00:19:34,590 --> 00:19:36,478

JD Andrew: Okay, I'm gonna play this part of the verse,

506

00:19:37,170 --> 00:19:39,115

JD Andrew: play until I get this right and then I'll

507

00:19:39,155 --> 00:19:39,917

JD Andrew: move on to the chorus.

508

00:19:39,937 --> 00:19:41,882

JD Andrew: You know, we just we play it like a song.

509

00:19:42,111 --> 00:19:44,524

JD Andrew: You know, if, as if we were a band in the

510

00:19:44,564 --> 00:19:48,357

JD Andrew: studio playing live, we just try to do that.

511

00:19:48,517 --> 00:19:50,402

JD Andrew: It's like here's the beginning of the song,

512

00:19:50,422 --> 00:19:52,252

JD Andrew: here's the end, let's play it all the way

513

00:19:52,292 --> 00:19:52,633

JD Andrew: through.

514

00:19:52,934 --> 00:19:54,878

JD Andrew: And you know, if we mess up then we'll go

515

00:19:54,918 --> 00:19:57,003

JD Andrew: back, we'll do it another time, you know.

516

00:19:57,063 --> 00:20:01,033

JD Andrew: So it's uh, you know we have the technology

517

00:20:01,093 --> 00:20:02,978

JD Andrew: to just sit in there and rip things apart.

518

00:20:03,339 --> 00:20:05,283

JD Andrew: You know, like these, you know you can just

519

00:20:06,250 --> 00:20:08,738

JD Andrew: Micro edit until you're, you know, blue in

520

00:20:08,758 --> 00:20:09,199

JD Andrew: the face.

521

00:20:09,540 --> 00:20:11,816

JD Andrew: But we don't do that because you know

522

00:20:11,917 --> 00:20:14,835

JD Andrew: that's Everything that we, you know, don't

523

00:20:14,895 --> 00:20:15,757

JD Andrew: like about music.

524

00:20:15,857 --> 00:20:18,723

JD Andrew: We like, you know, dynamics and feeling and

525

00:20:19,524 --> 00:20:22,814

JD Andrew: and Looseness and tightness at the same

526

00:20:22,874 --> 00:20:23,135

JD Andrew: time.

527

00:20:23,195 --> 00:20:25,420

JD Andrew: You know it's like all these things that

528

00:20:25,500 --> 00:20:26,683

JD Andrew: make music feel good.

529

00:20:26,763 --> 00:20:28,594

JD Andrew: You know it's like it all comes from

530

00:20:28,715 --> 00:20:30,059

JD Andrew: playing an instrument.

531

00:20:30,380 --> 00:20:32,653

JD Andrew: You know and you know playing it with

532

00:20:32,733 --> 00:20:34,439

JD Andrew: feeling and emotion and all that.

533

00:20:34,500 --> 00:20:36,747

Billy Bob Thornton: So you know, we're a band with a, we're a

534

00:20:36,767 --> 00:20:39,917

Billy Bob Thornton: band with a, a lead vocalist, a guitar

535

00:20:39,937 --> 00:20:41,642

Billy Bob Thornton: player and drummer, and that's and we do

536

00:20:41,682 --> 00:20:43,427

Billy Bob Thornton: takes until we get one and then.

537

00:20:43,970 --> 00:20:45,961

Billy Bob Thornton: Then you put on, jd puts on the bass.

538

00:20:45,981 --> 00:20:47,388

Billy Bob Thornton: That was staying, it sounds like a touch of

539

00:20:47,449 --> 00:20:47,710

Billy Bob Thornton: improv.

540

00:20:47,930 --> 00:20:49,535

Marc Preston: Y'all have going on a little bit just kind

541

00:20:49,575 --> 00:20:50,658

Marc Preston: of kind of sussing it out.

542

00:20:50,698 --> 00:20:51,781

Marc Preston: What it is that y'all want to do.

543

00:20:52,490 --> 00:20:54,816

Marc Preston: It is such a cool, unique sound y'all have.

544

00:20:55,076 --> 00:20:56,680

Marc Preston: What is the on ramp that you're finding

545

00:20:56,700 --> 00:20:56,800

Marc Preston: that?

546

00:20:56,941 --> 00:20:57,983

Marc Preston: How people discover you?

547

00:20:58,230 --> 00:20:59,896

Marc Preston: Are they coming from rockabilly country?

548

00:20:59,916 --> 00:21:01,541

Marc Preston: Are they coming from kind of a classic rock?

549

00:21:02,191 --> 00:21:03,617

Marc Preston: The people that discover you that kind of

550

00:21:03,658 --> 00:21:05,326

Marc Preston: fall in love with you, the people you're

551

00:21:05,366 --> 00:21:07,153

Marc Preston: seeing when you're on stage, how are they

552

00:21:07,534 --> 00:21:08,578

Marc Preston: typically finding you?

553

00:21:08,618 --> 00:21:09,441

Marc Preston: What's their on ramp?

554

00:21:09,831 --> 00:21:10,854

Billy Bob Thornton: I think a lot of it.

555

00:21:11,014 --> 00:21:14,265

Billy Bob Thornton: Our fans are people who are fans of the

556

00:21:14,305 --> 00:21:15,449

Billy Bob Thornton: stuff that influenced us.

557

00:21:15,569 --> 00:21:16,431

Billy Bob Thornton: Actually, I mean it's.

558

00:21:16,933 --> 00:21:19,099

Billy Bob Thornton: We have a lot of fans of classic rock and

559

00:21:19,139 --> 00:21:19,922

Billy Bob Thornton: british invasion.

560

00:21:20,991 --> 00:21:23,380

Billy Bob Thornton: Uh, we have some from the americana world.

561

00:21:24,330 --> 00:21:26,578

Billy Bob Thornton: So I would say anywhere from the sort of

562

00:21:26,698 --> 00:21:29,858

Billy Bob Thornton: indie music you know through classic rock

563

00:21:29,918 --> 00:21:31,806

Billy Bob Thornton: and british invasion, I would say that's

564

00:21:31,846 --> 00:21:32,770

Billy Bob Thornton: most of our fan base.

565

00:21:33,211 --> 00:21:34,616

Marc Preston: It seems like a lot of the millennials are

566

00:21:34,656 --> 00:21:37,532

Marc Preston: kind of discovering some of that Music and

567

00:21:37,572 --> 00:21:38,695

Marc Preston: it's kind of new to them.

568

00:21:38,755 --> 00:21:40,259

Marc Preston: I know my kids, you know, they discover

569

00:21:40,319 --> 00:21:41,362

Marc Preston: some of that same kind of music.

570

00:21:42,031 --> 00:21:43,758

Marc Preston: They're teenagers, you know, so that's uh.

571

00:21:45,010 --> 00:21:45,692

JD Andrew: The the good thing is.

572

00:21:45,752 --> 00:21:47,417

JD Andrew: I mean they're they're tied into the

573

00:21:47,517 --> 00:21:50,331

JD Andrew: technology aspect of it, where you know

574

00:21:50,371 --> 00:21:52,517

JD Andrew: they have every song ever written in the

575

00:21:52,557 --> 00:21:55,545

JD Andrew: world on their phones and so you know if,

576

00:21:55,846 --> 00:21:59,074

JD Andrew: uh, they just get it somehow.

577

00:21:59,896 --> 00:22:02,061

JD Andrew: If this song pops up you know for them and

578

00:22:02,080 --> 00:22:04,211

JD Andrew: they like that, then they'll go and and

579

00:22:04,271 --> 00:22:05,995

JD Andrew: search out more and they've got the ways to

580

00:22:06,035 --> 00:22:08,060

JD Andrew: do that Do y'all miss the days of going to

581

00:22:08,101 --> 00:22:11,234

JD Andrew: record stores and the way it used to be.

582

00:22:11,294 --> 00:22:12,657

Marc Preston: Or do you like the fact that's all on your

583

00:22:12,698 --> 00:22:13,099

Marc Preston: phone now?

584

00:22:13,540 --> 00:22:14,663

JD Andrew: No, definitely miss it.

585

00:22:15,051 --> 00:22:16,735

JD Andrew: No, it's, I mean, it's that's, you know.

586

00:22:16,836 --> 00:22:18,560

JD Andrew: That's why we, you know, we, as much as we

587

00:22:18,600 --> 00:22:21,335

JD Andrew: can, we, you know, do things with indie

588

00:22:21,395 --> 00:22:26,773

JD Andrew: record stores and, um, just go to them when

589

00:22:26,793 --> 00:22:27,575

JD Andrew: we're on the road.

590

00:22:27,755 --> 00:22:29,540

JD Andrew: You know we'll go and hang out and, you

591

00:22:29,560 --> 00:22:30,703

JD Andrew: know, check out what they got.

592

00:22:31,470 --> 00:22:35,171

JD Andrew: But at the same time, you know we're it,

593

00:22:35,291 --> 00:22:36,975

JD Andrew: we'll be sitting around in the studio going,

594

00:22:36,995 --> 00:22:41,013

JD Andrew: hey, remember this song by uh uh, you know,

595

00:22:42,990 --> 00:22:44,654

JD Andrew: yeah, you know, remember this.

596

00:22:44,694 --> 00:22:44,915

JD Andrew: This.

597

00:22:45,055 --> 00:22:46,258

JD Andrew: You know, any of you know it's like

598

00:22:46,338 --> 00:22:49,171

JD Andrew: something that's like, you know, a, a

599

00:22:49,251 --> 00:22:51,505

JD Andrew: memory for us and we're like we want to

600

00:22:51,565 --> 00:22:52,088

JD Andrew: find this song.

601

00:22:52,108 --> 00:22:53,192

JD Andrew: You know, some, there was something

602

00:22:53,292 --> 00:22:53,974

JD Andrew: interesting in it.

603

00:22:54,014 --> 00:22:56,079

JD Andrew: You know, like, like a couple weeks ago we

604

00:22:56,099 --> 00:22:59,014

JD Andrew: were listening to Dell Shannon's I mean, we

605

00:22:59,034 --> 00:23:00,360

JD Andrew: were listening to runaway and it was like,

606

00:23:00,943 --> 00:23:02,409

JD Andrew: and then it's like listening to that and

607

00:23:02,429 --> 00:23:04,014

JD Andrew: it's like what was that sound that was

608

00:23:04,094 --> 00:23:06,280

JD Andrew: playing the solo in the, you know,

609

00:23:06,340 --> 00:23:08,752

JD Andrew: instrumental section, being able to look

610

00:23:08,772 --> 00:23:09,654

JD Andrew: that up and find out.

611

00:23:09,694 --> 00:23:12,039

JD Andrew: It was this one-off instrument called the

612

00:23:12,099 --> 00:23:14,672

JD Andrew: music tron that some guy built, you know,

613

00:23:14,692 --> 00:23:17,651

JD Andrew: and he wrote that song with Dell and it's

614

00:23:17,892 --> 00:23:20,936

JD Andrew: um, you know, having that, you know, is

615

00:23:21,056 --> 00:23:24,335

JD Andrew: really valuable, but, but nothing beats

616

00:23:25,150 --> 00:23:27,375

JD Andrew: Going into a record store and being able to

617

00:23:27,435 --> 00:23:29,920

JD Andrew: flip through the records and and just find

618

00:23:29,960 --> 00:23:31,023

JD Andrew: all these treasures.

619

00:23:31,323 --> 00:23:31,936

JD Andrew: You know, it's like.

620

00:23:32,810 --> 00:23:34,855

JD Andrew: It's like that's why we both have boxes of

621

00:23:34,915 --> 00:23:37,521

JD Andrew: CDs and vinyl just sitting around in

622

00:23:37,561 --> 00:23:38,583

JD Andrew: quarters of our houses.

623

00:23:38,770 --> 00:23:40,903

JD Andrew: You know, it's like these are our treasures

624

00:23:41,023 --> 00:23:42,611

JD Andrew: that we grew up with, you know, and it's

625

00:23:42,631 --> 00:23:44,820

JD Andrew: like we can't imagine getting rid of them

626

00:23:44,941 --> 00:23:45,924

JD Andrew: because they were.

627

00:23:46,205 --> 00:23:48,153

Marc Preston: They meant so much to us, you know and I

628

00:23:48,193 --> 00:23:51,914

Marc Preston: grew up in that era of Just, it was just

629

00:23:52,154 --> 00:23:54,401

Marc Preston: post vinyl and cassette.

630

00:23:54,632 --> 00:23:56,629

Marc Preston: So I like was deep, like when I was in high

631

00:23:56,649 --> 00:23:57,893

Marc Preston: school it was all cassette and when CD

632

00:23:57,993 --> 00:23:59,458

Marc Preston: rolled as I go, thank god something better

633

00:24:00,140 --> 00:24:00,701

Marc Preston: than cassette.

634

00:24:00,741 --> 00:24:03,134

Marc Preston: Now Vinyl's back again, which is, like I

635

00:24:03,174 --> 00:24:05,720

Marc Preston: think, really cool and and because I think

636

00:24:05,760 --> 00:24:09,038

Marc Preston: what was lost Is the whole zen of the album

637

00:24:09,119 --> 00:24:10,667

Marc Preston: art, you know, I thought that was just the

638

00:24:10,707 --> 00:24:11,170

Marc Preston: coolest thing.

639

00:24:11,330 --> 00:24:13,160

Marc Preston: It was part of the collection, not just the

640

00:24:13,200 --> 00:24:13,482

Marc Preston: music.

641

00:24:13,522 --> 00:24:16,154

Marc Preston: Now, as far as the album art goes, how much

642

00:24:16,214 --> 00:24:17,358

Marc Preston: input do you all have on that?

643

00:24:17,398 --> 00:24:19,064

Marc Preston: Do you all have a process that y'all?

644

00:24:19,445 --> 00:24:20,770

Marc Preston: Y'all got somebody you like to use?

645

00:24:20,790 --> 00:24:22,799

Marc Preston: Or I've always been curious how do bands

646

00:24:22,839 --> 00:24:23,864

Marc Preston: decide on the album art?

647

00:24:24,606 --> 00:24:26,510

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, we do have people, obviously, that

648

00:24:26,530 --> 00:24:27,352

Billy Bob Thornton: help us, because we're not.

649

00:24:27,593 --> 00:24:28,816

Billy Bob Thornton: Neither one of us are artists.

650

00:24:29,965 --> 00:24:31,992

Billy Bob Thornton: We can barely write our own names.

651

00:24:32,565 --> 00:24:37,672

Billy Bob Thornton: But we have a guy named Matt Cullen who has.

652

00:24:37,732 --> 00:24:42,719

Billy Bob Thornton: We give him the basic idea, here's the kind

653

00:24:42,779 --> 00:24:44,948

Billy Bob Thornton: of cover, and we'll give him examples of

654

00:24:45,008 --> 00:24:47,934

Billy Bob Thornton: other album covers that we've seen that

655

00:24:48,595 --> 00:24:49,778

Billy Bob Thornton: we're trying to get at.

656

00:24:51,910 --> 00:24:54,478

Billy Bob Thornton: So he's done a few albums with us and then

657

00:24:54,659 --> 00:24:56,585

Billy Bob Thornton: this latest one, help of the Live, the one

658

00:24:56,685 --> 00:24:57,867

Billy Bob Thornton: that's coming out when we're able to

659

00:24:58,068 --> 00:25:01,395

Billy Bob Thornton: continue that was done by Frank Barshan and

660

00:25:01,415 --> 00:25:05,230

Billy Bob Thornton: Chris Jimenez we're calling him Noches and

661

00:25:06,052 --> 00:25:08,628

Billy Bob Thornton: he's an artist and we just said, hey, you

662

00:25:08,648 --> 00:25:10,734

Billy Bob Thornton: know, we just took a picture of Jayie, a

663

00:25:10,754 --> 00:25:12,267

Billy Bob Thornton: picture of me, and said, chris, could you

664

00:25:12,288 --> 00:25:14,379

Billy Bob Thornton: do like a pencil drawing of this, because

665

00:25:14,420 --> 00:25:16,390

Billy Bob Thornton: we just want that kind of art on this

666

00:25:16,430 --> 00:25:16,791

Billy Bob Thornton: record.

667

00:25:16,945 --> 00:25:21,591

Billy Bob Thornton: He did it so, but we we don't work with

668

00:25:21,651 --> 00:25:24,576

Billy Bob Thornton: people at a label and work with designers

669

00:25:24,636 --> 00:25:25,357

Billy Bob Thornton: and stuff like that.

670

00:25:25,397 --> 00:25:26,339

JD Andrew: We can do it ourselves.

671

00:25:27,085 --> 00:25:28,069

JD Andrew: Yeah, no, we, you know, we sit there.

672

00:25:28,945 --> 00:25:31,115

JD Andrew: I've learned enough Photoshop to be able to

673

00:25:31,155 --> 00:25:33,385

JD Andrew: put together a vinyl package, you know.

674

00:25:33,405 --> 00:25:36,607

JD Andrew: So Chris gave us that picture and you know

675

00:25:36,627 --> 00:25:38,452

JD Andrew: we stuck it on there and it's like okay, I

676

00:25:38,512 --> 00:25:39,434

JD Andrew: typed out the words.

677

00:25:40,465 --> 00:25:43,414

JD Andrew: It's like, okay, let's find a font that

678

00:25:43,454 --> 00:25:44,526

JD Andrew: looks all right, you know.

679

00:25:44,646 --> 00:25:45,972

JD Andrew: And so we do it ourselves.

680

00:25:46,125 --> 00:25:47,953

JD Andrew: You know, we have, you know, yeah, we have

681

00:25:48,787 --> 00:25:50,350

JD Andrew: these other guys that are, you know, doing

682

00:25:50,390 --> 00:25:54,658

JD Andrew: the heavy lifting part of it, but the the

683

00:25:55,405 --> 00:25:57,170

JD Andrew: you know boring part of it, like picking

684

00:25:57,190 --> 00:25:58,835

JD Andrew: the color, that you know everything.

685

00:25:58,965 --> 00:26:01,111

JD Andrew: It's like we sit there and it's like, you

686

00:26:01,151 --> 00:26:02,695

JD Andrew: know, I can't remember what color I had

687

00:26:02,776 --> 00:26:04,117

JD Andrew: first and Billy's like, well, why don't you

688

00:26:04,137 --> 00:26:04,765

JD Andrew: try turquoise?

689

00:26:05,066 --> 00:26:06,812

JD Andrew: It's like, okay, great, let's try that.

690

00:26:07,486 --> 00:26:08,651

JD Andrew: And it's like, okay, that looks cool.

691

00:26:08,986 --> 00:26:10,710

Marc Preston: Well, I love the aesthetic of what y'all

692

00:26:10,750 --> 00:26:11,251

Marc Preston: did like.

693

00:26:11,331 --> 00:26:12,955

Marc Preston: Even the logo kind of reminds me of it.

694

00:26:13,095 --> 00:26:14,748

Marc Preston: It's a callback, it's just, it's just kind

695

00:26:14,768 --> 00:26:15,170

Marc Preston: of cool.

696

00:26:15,365 --> 00:26:16,950

Marc Preston: You know, it's something I remember, and

697

00:26:17,190 --> 00:26:19,136

Marc Preston: even the on the previous stuff y'all've

698

00:26:19,156 --> 00:26:21,391

Marc Preston: done, even the way y'all y'all dressed, it

699

00:26:21,592 --> 00:26:22,314

Marc Preston: was just kind of cool.

700

00:26:22,805 --> 00:26:24,353

Marc Preston: It's a cool callback, and I can't think of

701

00:26:24,393 --> 00:26:25,740

Marc Preston: another adjective besides cool.

702

00:26:25,820 --> 00:26:27,868

JD Andrew: but definitely You're saying we're not cool,

703

00:26:27,943 --> 00:26:29,872

JD Andrew: so we just have to like, use other.

704

00:26:29,947 --> 00:26:31,868

Marc Preston: You know your secret is safe with me.

705

00:26:32,785 --> 00:26:34,773

Marc Preston: I'm curious though now, as a native Texan,

706

00:26:34,954 --> 00:26:37,625

Marc Preston: I got to ask you, billy, you know, do you

707

00:26:37,645 --> 00:26:38,046

Marc Preston: like to go by?

708

00:26:38,167 --> 00:26:39,451

Marc Preston: Do you go by Billy, bob or Billy?

709

00:26:40,928 --> 00:26:41,771

Billy Bob Thornton: Billy or Bud.

710

00:26:42,646 --> 00:26:46,249

Marc Preston: Bud, okay, as a native Texan, I got to know

711

00:26:46,650 --> 00:26:48,816

Marc Preston: your connection to ZZ Top.

712

00:26:49,507 --> 00:26:50,832

Marc Preston: Do you mind touching on that for a moment,

713

00:26:50,965 --> 00:26:52,170

Marc Preston: because I've always been curious about it?

714

00:26:52,606 --> 00:26:54,651

Marc Preston: I remember hearing an interview a few years

715

00:26:54,671 --> 00:26:56,597

Marc Preston: ago and you brought up ZZ Top and my memory

716

00:26:56,705 --> 00:26:57,387

Marc Preston: faded a little bit.

717

00:26:57,407 --> 00:26:59,031

Marc Preston: But I wanted you to clarify a little bit on

718

00:26:59,051 --> 00:26:59,252

Marc Preston: that.

719

00:26:59,452 --> 00:27:01,766

Billy Bob Thornton: Absolutely Well, yeah, actually we've

720

00:27:01,786 --> 00:27:04,975

Billy Bob Thornton: opened for them quite a few times and I've

721

00:27:05,015 --> 00:27:05,837

Billy Bob Thornton: known those guys.

722

00:27:05,965 --> 00:27:10,573

Billy Bob Thornton: I've known Billy for probably 35 years and

723

00:27:10,653 --> 00:27:13,739

Billy Bob Thornton: I was very close with Dusty as close to

724

00:27:13,799 --> 00:27:18,909

Billy Bob Thornton: Frank as you can get I'm not but they're

725

00:27:18,989 --> 00:27:20,566

Billy Bob Thornton: all great guys, you know.

726

00:27:20,726 --> 00:27:22,752

Billy Bob Thornton: Obviously, dusty passed away this last year

727

00:27:22,772 --> 00:27:25,560

Billy Bob Thornton: and we were pretty devastated past the

728

00:27:25,580 --> 00:27:26,944

Billy Bob Thornton: white one, when we were on the road we were

729

00:27:26,984 --> 00:27:27,385

Billy Bob Thornton: on the road.

730

00:27:27,505 --> 00:27:29,009

Billy Bob Thornton: We were on the road and it was just really

731

00:27:29,089 --> 00:27:31,274

Billy Bob Thornton: up ahead playing all the way around.

732

00:27:33,867 --> 00:27:38,755

Billy Bob Thornton: But when I was in 1979 or 80, somewhere

733

00:27:38,795 --> 00:27:41,219

Billy Bob Thornton: back in there I was born in Hot Springs,

734

00:27:41,279 --> 00:27:44,230

Billy Bob Thornton: arkansas, so I was very close to Texas and

735

00:27:44,251 --> 00:27:46,075

Billy Bob Thornton: then moved to Houston after high school.

736

00:27:47,345 --> 00:27:50,292

Billy Bob Thornton: So I lived in a suburb of Houston called

737

00:27:50,312 --> 00:27:55,304

Billy Bob Thornton: Tombaul and they're a Houston band, even

738

00:27:55,344 --> 00:27:57,230

Billy Bob Thornton: though Dusty and Billy came.

739

00:27:57,270 --> 00:28:01,890

Billy Bob Thornton: Dusty and my friend came from Dallas, but

740

00:28:01,910 --> 00:28:05,435

Billy Bob Thornton: there was a guy who worked with ZZ Top's

741

00:28:05,496 --> 00:28:07,679

Billy Bob Thornton: company who saw us playing at a club in

742

00:28:07,719 --> 00:28:12,111

Billy Bob Thornton: Houston called Cardi's and he came

743

00:28:12,131 --> 00:28:13,195

Billy Bob Thornton: backstage afterward.

744

00:28:13,386 --> 00:28:15,376

Billy Bob Thornton: We were in a three-piece band and we

745

00:28:15,437 --> 00:28:17,587

Billy Bob Thornton: sounded a lot of things ZZ Top.

746

00:28:17,607 --> 00:28:20,748

Billy Bob Thornton: We did a couple of songs and I was playing

747

00:28:20,788 --> 00:28:25,932

Billy Bob Thornton: drums then and he said hey guys, why don't

748

00:28:25,952 --> 00:28:27,917

Billy Bob Thornton: you like to be a ZZ Top tribute act?

749

00:28:28,747 --> 00:28:29,972

Billy Bob Thornton: And we said what does that mean?

750

00:28:30,427 --> 00:28:32,141

Marc Preston: Because they didn't have tribute acts yeah.

751

00:28:32,806 --> 00:28:35,142

Billy Bob Thornton: Maybe a couple, but it wasn't a thing like

752

00:28:35,182 --> 00:28:35,585

Billy Bob Thornton: it is now.

753

00:28:35,806 --> 00:28:39,809

Billy Bob Thornton: Now there's one for every band, but anyway

754

00:28:39,829 --> 00:28:41,854

Billy Bob Thornton: there's like the Jonathan Edwards tribute

755

00:28:42,014 --> 00:28:47,012

Billy Bob Thornton: act, but anyway.

756

00:28:47,032 --> 00:28:50,037

Billy Bob Thornton: So we said, well, what's in it for us?

757

00:28:50,078 --> 00:28:50,518

Billy Bob Thornton: What do we do?

758

00:28:50,945 --> 00:28:52,505

Billy Bob Thornton: He said, well, you dress like ZZ Top, you

759

00:28:52,525 --> 00:28:54,652

Billy Bob Thornton: play their songs and I book you and you go

760

00:28:54,672 --> 00:28:55,133

Billy Bob Thornton: out and do it.

761

00:28:58,631 --> 00:29:00,776

Billy Bob Thornton: And so we said, well, what do we get out of

762

00:29:00,817 --> 00:29:00,977

Billy Bob Thornton: this?

763

00:29:01,125 --> 00:29:02,885

Billy Bob Thornton: And he says, what are you making tonight?

764

00:29:03,005 --> 00:29:03,668

Billy Bob Thornton: We said I don't know.

765

00:29:03,688 --> 00:29:04,432

Billy Bob Thornton: $300?.

766

00:29:04,605 --> 00:29:06,532

Billy Bob Thornton: He said, how'd you like to make $1,500?

767

00:29:07,425 --> 00:29:08,588

Billy Bob Thornton: We said we'd like that very much.

768

00:29:11,125 --> 00:29:14,405

Billy Bob Thornton: So for a couple of years we did that and

769

00:29:14,425 --> 00:29:16,353

Billy Bob Thornton: Billy actually came to see us somewhere.

770

00:29:16,565 --> 00:29:17,848

Billy Bob Thornton: Some friend of his said, hey, if you want

771

00:29:17,868 --> 00:29:19,412

Billy Bob Thornton: to see how to play your songs live, go

772

00:29:19,452 --> 00:29:20,094

Billy Bob Thornton: watch these guys.

773

00:29:22,127 --> 00:29:23,371

Billy Bob Thornton: And so we hit.

774

00:29:24,445 --> 00:29:26,705

Billy Bob Thornton: But I didn't really get to knowing that and

775

00:29:26,726 --> 00:29:28,170

Billy Bob Thornton: I started hanging out with Billy in the

776

00:29:28,250 --> 00:29:33,953

Billy Bob Thornton: early 90s and then, you know, met Dusty and

777

00:29:34,154 --> 00:29:34,434

Billy Bob Thornton: Frank.

778

00:29:34,454 --> 00:29:36,487

Billy Bob Thornton: You know, through Billy We've just had a

779

00:29:36,547 --> 00:29:38,886

Billy Bob Thornton: great friendship ever since and I've

780

00:29:38,966 --> 00:29:41,332

Billy Bob Thornton: actually ridden on the bus with those guys

781

00:29:41,352 --> 00:29:44,126

Billy Bob Thornton: to the shows before and hung out and stayed

782

00:29:44,147 --> 00:29:45,712

Billy Bob Thornton: at their houses and everything.

783

00:29:45,772 --> 00:29:48,209

Billy Bob Thornton: It's all a big family and I'm very close to

784

00:29:48,249 --> 00:29:49,593

Billy Bob Thornton: Pablo there, to our manager.

785

00:29:50,485 --> 00:29:51,930

Billy Bob Thornton: So it all kind of started back then.

786

00:29:52,492 --> 00:29:54,849

Marc Preston: Yeah, I actually saw I was at LAX getting

787

00:29:54,870 --> 00:29:57,865

Marc Preston: my luggage and I saw Billy once and I was

788

00:29:57,885 --> 00:30:00,151

Marc Preston: like so I was like crap, I'm not a fanboy

789

00:30:00,232 --> 00:30:01,675

Marc Preston: out and I'm just going to walk by and it's

790

00:30:01,695 --> 00:30:04,191

Marc Preston: kind of not and he looked exactly the way

791

00:30:04,211 --> 00:30:04,974

Marc Preston: he wanted him to look.

792

00:30:05,366 --> 00:30:06,389

Marc Preston: You know he had he was.

793

00:30:06,891 --> 00:30:07,473

Marc Preston: He was Billy.

794

00:30:07,653 --> 00:30:09,158

Marc Preston: You know Absolutely.

795

00:30:09,165 --> 00:30:10,590

Marc Preston: Now I do know you got a couple of tom ball

796

00:30:11,332 --> 00:30:13,187

Marc Preston: dates on your tour and besides outside of

797

00:30:13,227 --> 00:30:14,933

Marc Preston: California, you got a number of dates in

798

00:30:14,953 --> 00:30:15,515

Marc Preston: California.

799

00:30:15,725 --> 00:30:18,231

Marc Preston: But I noticed y'all really hitting some, a

800

00:30:18,291 --> 00:30:20,917

Marc Preston: lot of Texas venues and some cool locations.

801

00:30:21,185 --> 00:30:22,932

Marc Preston: It was was that an active choice?

802

00:30:23,045 --> 00:30:23,989

Marc Preston: You want to spend a little more time in

803

00:30:24,029 --> 00:30:24,471

Marc Preston: Texas?

804

00:30:24,886 --> 00:30:26,372

Marc Preston: Do you have a big following in Texas?

805

00:30:26,525 --> 00:30:28,552

Marc Preston: Kind of what was the choice there?

806

00:30:28,973 --> 00:30:31,151

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, we have yeah, we do have a following

807

00:30:31,231 --> 00:30:33,170

Billy Bob Thornton: in Texas and normally we don't have that in

808

00:30:33,210 --> 00:30:35,649

Billy Bob Thornton: California shows this is really rare for us

809

00:30:35,690 --> 00:30:36,472

Billy Bob Thornton: to have that many.

810

00:30:37,345 --> 00:30:38,729

Billy Bob Thornton: Normally they're like three or four at the

811

00:30:38,769 --> 00:30:39,070

Billy Bob Thornton: most.

812

00:30:41,447 --> 00:30:44,375

Billy Bob Thornton: So for some reason they don't like us in

813

00:30:44,415 --> 00:30:46,249

Billy Bob Thornton: San Francisco so we don't really play there.

814

00:30:47,765 --> 00:30:49,605

Billy Bob Thornton: But but we've been sudden California, we're

815

00:30:49,625 --> 00:30:51,766

Billy Bob Thornton: like the Beatles, so.

816

00:30:51,997 --> 00:30:55,384

Billy Bob Thornton: But Texas is, first of all, it's a big

817

00:30:55,614 --> 00:30:55,874

Billy Bob Thornton: state.

818

00:30:55,954 --> 00:30:57,437

Billy Bob Thornton: There are a lot of places to play there.

819

00:30:58,105 --> 00:30:59,649

Billy Bob Thornton: I mean, you know, if you go through Rhode

820

00:30:59,749 --> 00:31:03,245

Billy Bob Thornton: Island there's like two venues, but in

821

00:31:03,286 --> 00:31:06,433

Billy Bob Thornton: Texas you can play, you can do a whole tour

822

00:31:06,493 --> 00:31:07,596

Billy Bob Thornton: in Texas practically.

823

00:31:09,187 --> 00:31:11,072

JD Andrew: And so they still be like eight hours away

824

00:31:11,132 --> 00:31:12,956

JD Andrew: from each city, Exactly.

825

00:31:13,585 --> 00:31:16,173

Billy Bob Thornton: So you know, just agent wise, our agent

826

00:31:16,253 --> 00:31:18,580

Billy Bob Thornton: books us a lot in Texas, but we do have

827

00:31:18,680 --> 00:31:20,089

Billy Bob Thornton: connections there and a lot of friends

828

00:31:20,129 --> 00:31:20,370

Billy Bob Thornton: there.

829

00:31:21,085 --> 00:31:22,090

Billy Bob Thornton: We played there a lot.

830

00:31:22,345 --> 00:31:26,874

Billy Bob Thornton: So we do love to get back to Texas and that

831

00:31:26,934 --> 00:31:29,099

Billy Bob Thornton: whole area really Oklahoma, Texas.

832

00:31:29,647 --> 00:31:32,029

Marc Preston: Yeah, I'm from Dallas, so the areas of

833

00:31:32,109 --> 00:31:33,353

Marc Preston: you're hitting up there and going dammit,

834

00:31:33,373 --> 00:31:35,166

Marc Preston: like I printed it up here, I said you're

835

00:31:35,186 --> 00:31:36,189

Marc Preston: going is like are there any?

836

00:31:36,229 --> 00:31:38,295

Marc Preston: Look, he's not coming to New Orleans, oh

837

00:31:38,335 --> 00:31:38,636

Marc Preston: crap.

838

00:31:38,925 --> 00:31:40,150

JD Andrew: Well, we haven't played New Orleans in a

839

00:31:40,190 --> 00:31:40,512

JD Andrew: while.

840

00:31:40,785 --> 00:31:42,850

Billy Bob Thornton: Yeah, I mean it's it's we've we've.

841

00:31:43,612 --> 00:31:45,336

JD Andrew: You know we've hit spots around.

842

00:31:45,457 --> 00:31:47,392

JD Andrew: You know, like Shreveport and Baton Rouge.

843

00:31:47,525 --> 00:31:50,772

JD Andrew: We had a had a date on the last tour that

844

00:31:50,792 --> 00:31:51,594

JD Andrew: we didn't make it to.

845

00:31:53,485 --> 00:31:55,809

JD Andrew: But you know, usually the south, the

846

00:31:55,849 --> 00:31:58,915

JD Andrew: southeast, you know, is is a, you know,

847

00:31:59,736 --> 00:32:01,399

JD Andrew: good part of the country for us.

848

00:32:01,505 --> 00:32:04,150

JD Andrew: You know we usually play quite a few shows

849

00:32:04,190 --> 00:32:08,959

JD Andrew: in Alabama and Tennessee and just, you know,

850

00:32:09,546 --> 00:32:10,470

JD Andrew: a little bit in Georgia.

851

00:32:10,865 --> 00:32:14,896

JD Andrew: You know it's never been a real strong spot

852

00:32:14,956 --> 00:32:16,908

JD Andrew: for us but you know we keep moving east,

853

00:32:17,409 --> 00:32:19,494

JD Andrew: you know, from Alabama is like, you know,

854

00:32:20,576 --> 00:32:21,826

JD Andrew: really a stronghold for us.

855

00:32:21,846 --> 00:32:23,392

JD Andrew: You know, like Muscle Shoals area.

856

00:32:24,247 --> 00:32:26,112

JD Andrew: Oh, that's a legendary area down there,

857

00:32:26,152 --> 00:32:28,529

JD Andrew: yeah exactly and it's like we, you know

858

00:32:28,570 --> 00:32:29,593

JD Andrew: we've done really well.

859

00:32:29,765 --> 00:32:32,331

JD Andrew: We got a lot of fans in northern Alabama

860

00:32:33,133 --> 00:32:34,536

JD Andrew: and you know it spreads out from there.

861

00:32:35,626 --> 00:32:38,760

JD Andrew: But for some reason, you know it's New

862

00:32:38,800 --> 00:32:39,684

JD Andrew: Orleans has been hard.

863

00:32:40,747 --> 00:32:42,531

JD Andrew: I mean it's also you know place where you

864

00:32:42,551 --> 00:32:44,617

JD Andrew: know, like every year, when we, about the

865

00:32:44,657 --> 00:32:46,349

JD Andrew: time we get there, are going to be there,

866

00:32:46,389 --> 00:32:47,311

JD Andrew: you know there's a hurricane.

867

00:32:47,351 --> 00:32:47,952

Marc Preston: Yeah, oh yeah.

868

00:32:48,053 --> 00:32:49,656

Marc Preston: Well, they do have hurricanes down here.

869

00:32:50,305 --> 00:32:51,511

Marc Preston: Yeah, you want to get on out when you can.

870

00:32:58,898 --> 00:33:00,081

Marc Preston: What are y'all listening to right now?

871

00:33:00,872 --> 00:33:03,519

Marc Preston: I know the influences for Boxmasters, but

872

00:33:03,780 --> 00:33:06,989

Marc Preston: what right now, when you kick on Spotify or

873

00:33:07,049 --> 00:33:08,535

Marc Preston: put an album on, what are y'all listening

874

00:33:08,576 --> 00:33:08,676

Marc Preston: to?

875

00:33:08,991 --> 00:33:11,179

Billy Bob Thornton: It's funny when we're making a record we

876

00:33:11,200 --> 00:33:13,549

Billy Bob Thornton: don't listen to much of anybody else's

877

00:33:13,589 --> 00:33:15,393

Billy Bob Thornton: stuff because we're so concentrated on what

878

00:33:15,433 --> 00:33:15,934

Billy Bob Thornton: we're up to.

879

00:33:21,070 --> 00:33:22,655

Billy Bob Thornton: I still pretty much listen to what I've

880

00:33:22,715 --> 00:33:24,038

Billy Bob Thornton: always listened to, but it's pretty

881

00:33:24,078 --> 00:33:24,620

Billy Bob Thornton: eclectic.

882

00:33:26,832 --> 00:33:29,457

Billy Bob Thornton: I listen to a lot of Sinatra and Dean

883

00:33:29,477 --> 00:33:33,504

Billy Bob Thornton: Martin also, and Elvis and the Beatles and

884

00:33:33,564 --> 00:33:36,739

Billy Bob Thornton: traffic and cream and the mothers that I

885

00:33:36,759 --> 00:33:37,160

Billy Bob Thornton: mentioned.

886

00:33:37,911 --> 00:33:39,835

Billy Bob Thornton: I listen to that because we got a turntable

887

00:33:39,875 --> 00:33:42,781

Billy Bob Thornton: here in the studio that's 12 feet from us

888

00:33:42,802 --> 00:33:43,222

Billy Bob Thornton: right now.

889

00:33:43,971 --> 00:33:45,415

Billy Bob Thornton: We've got some vinyl in there of the

890

00:33:45,435 --> 00:33:47,080

Billy Bob Thornton: mothers and the men sitting here like that.

891

00:33:47,190 --> 00:33:48,174

Billy Bob Thornton: I listen to a lot of that.

892

00:33:49,631 --> 00:33:54,202

Billy Bob Thornton: In terms of new stuff, my daughter is 17.

893

00:33:55,191 --> 00:33:57,156

Billy Bob Thornton: I pretty much listen to what she listens to

894

00:33:57,176 --> 00:33:58,821

Billy Bob Thornton: when I'm in the house or when we're driving.

895

00:33:59,831 --> 00:34:01,816

Billy Bob Thornton: As a result, I hear a lot of Taylor Swift.

896

00:34:04,830 --> 00:34:06,254

Marc Preston: My 16-year-old just discovered.

897

00:34:06,274 --> 00:34:07,858

Marc Preston: Well, I don't know if she just discovered

898

00:34:07,918 --> 00:34:08,981

Marc Preston: it, but country music.

899

00:34:09,590 --> 00:34:10,714

Marc Preston: It's so funny because she's pretty much a

900

00:34:10,774 --> 00:34:11,898

Marc Preston: city girl, she's 16.

901

00:34:12,590 --> 00:34:13,815

Marc Preston: I have a son who's 17 and my oldest

902

00:34:13,835 --> 00:34:14,457

Marc Preston: daughter is 19.

903

00:34:15,170 --> 00:34:15,773

Marc Preston: My daughter asked me.

904

00:34:15,793 --> 00:34:16,977

Marc Preston: She said, daddy, I'm very serious.

905

00:34:17,030 --> 00:34:19,558

Marc Preston: She said, did they have country music back

906

00:34:19,578 --> 00:34:20,400

Marc Preston: when you were in high school?

907

00:34:20,671 --> 00:34:25,933

Marc Preston: I was like bless your heart I kicked on I

908

00:34:25,953 --> 00:34:27,298

Marc Preston: said I need to introduce you to what I was

909

00:34:27,338 --> 00:34:27,880

Marc Preston: listening to.

910

00:34:28,752 --> 00:34:30,056

Marc Preston: I was like I don't want to go too deep just

911

00:34:30,096 --> 00:34:30,237

Marc Preston: yet.

912

00:34:30,297 --> 00:34:31,080

Marc Preston: No, willy, just yet.

913

00:34:31,531 --> 00:34:33,277

Marc Preston: I put on Brooks and Dunn Neon Moon.

914

00:34:33,670 --> 00:34:34,615

Marc Preston: She starts singing it.

915

00:34:34,971 --> 00:34:36,878

Marc Preston: I'm like, baby, how do you know this song?

916

00:34:37,150 --> 00:34:38,575

Marc Preston: She's like, oh, it's on TikTok.

917

00:34:40,350 --> 00:34:42,535

Marc Preston: So that discovery thing is just like I'm

918

00:34:42,556 --> 00:34:43,558

Marc Preston: trying to get my head around it.

919

00:34:45,350 --> 00:34:47,155

Marc Preston: I came out of the world of radio and the

920

00:34:47,175 --> 00:34:47,756

Marc Preston: discovery.

921

00:34:48,137 --> 00:34:50,342

Marc Preston: Now for these kids it's everywhere.

922

00:34:50,470 --> 00:34:51,713

Marc Preston: It's eclectic, which I think is cool

923

00:34:51,733 --> 00:34:53,578

Marc Preston: because they can get exposed to things they

924

00:34:53,618 --> 00:34:54,401

Marc Preston: normally would not.

925

00:34:55,372 --> 00:34:55,994

Marc Preston: I was curious.

926

00:34:56,054 --> 00:34:58,282

Marc Preston: I've done a little bit of acting, not a lot,

927

00:34:58,382 --> 00:35:01,652

Marc Preston: but I've noticed that a lot of downtime and

928

00:35:01,672 --> 00:35:02,093

Marc Preston: a trailer.

929

00:35:02,774 --> 00:35:05,741

Marc Preston: Do you use that as just riffing on a guitar?

930

00:35:05,761 --> 00:35:07,312

Marc Preston: When it's theatrical, that's your focus.

931

00:35:07,332 --> 00:35:08,637

Marc Preston: Where it's music, that's your focus.

932

00:35:09,391 --> 00:35:11,657

Marc Preston: Or do you use music as kind of the way to

933

00:35:11,718 --> 00:35:13,824

Marc Preston: pass the time and to keep your mind active

934

00:35:14,647 --> 00:35:15,148

Marc Preston: creatively?

935

00:35:15,168 --> 00:35:15,489

Billy Bob Thornton: Not really.

936

00:35:18,615 --> 00:35:21,159

Billy Bob Thornton: I don't do much songwriting or anything

937

00:35:21,199 --> 00:35:22,141

Billy Bob Thornton: like that in the trailer.

938

00:35:24,590 --> 00:35:26,937

Billy Bob Thornton: What keeps me active on the set is what I'm

939

00:35:27,057 --> 00:35:28,301

Billy Bob Thornton: up to in that moment.

940

00:35:28,731 --> 00:35:31,139

Billy Bob Thornton: I don't really do them at the same time.

941

00:35:32,574 --> 00:35:33,055

Billy Bob Thornton: In music.

942

00:35:33,116 --> 00:35:36,266

Billy Bob Thornton: I don't watch movies to pass the time while

943

00:35:36,286 --> 00:35:38,172

Billy Bob Thornton: JD's doing some engineering or something

944

00:35:38,192 --> 00:35:38,754

Billy Bob Thornton: that's boring.

945

00:35:41,895 --> 00:35:43,740

Billy Bob Thornton: I usually stay focused on whatever's in the

946

00:35:43,801 --> 00:35:44,101

Billy Bob Thornton: moment.

947

00:35:44,370 --> 00:35:45,837

Billy Bob Thornton: The only thing that does happen is

948

00:35:45,877 --> 00:35:48,167

Billy Bob Thornton: sometimes when I'm on set and we've just

949

00:35:48,509 --> 00:35:52,021

Billy Bob Thornton: finished a record or whatever, jd has

950

00:35:52,101 --> 00:35:54,169

Billy Bob Thornton: questions about hey, what are we going to

951

00:35:54,189 --> 00:35:54,550

Billy Bob Thornton: do about this?

952

00:35:54,851 --> 00:35:55,855

Billy Bob Thornton: What do you think about that?

953

00:35:56,650 --> 00:35:58,476

Billy Bob Thornton: I'll talk to him from the set about it.

954

00:36:01,674 --> 00:36:04,299

JD Andrew: I've come and set up the laptop and a pair

955

00:36:04,319 --> 00:36:10,555

JD Andrew: of speakers in the trailer before, if we're

956

00:36:10,815 --> 00:36:15,981

JD Andrew: working on a record and we just need that

957

00:36:16,081 --> 00:36:19,846

JD Andrew: few little bits just to finish something

958

00:36:20,010 --> 00:36:20,131

JD Andrew: off.

959

00:36:26,018 --> 00:36:27,621

JD Andrew: But it's not well these days.

960

00:36:27,942 --> 00:36:29,564

JD Andrew: It's like there's breaks and all that.

961

00:36:30,111 --> 00:36:31,795

JD Andrew: We're like, oh, you'll find three days and

962

00:36:31,855 --> 00:36:33,819

JD Andrew: go run into the studio or something like

963

00:36:33,839 --> 00:36:34,020

JD Andrew: that.

964

00:36:35,751 --> 00:36:39,276

JD Andrew: That was the luxury of when you're shooting

965

00:36:39,336 --> 00:36:39,757

JD Andrew: in town.

966

00:36:44,970 --> 00:36:47,835

JD Andrew: When Bud leaves town or the country or

967

00:36:47,895 --> 00:36:52,082

JD Andrew: whatever, it's vacation time, usually for

968

00:36:52,122 --> 00:36:52,222

JD Andrew: me.

969

00:36:58,877 --> 00:37:00,780

Billy Bob Thornton: Also, I probably spend two-thirds of the

970

00:37:00,820 --> 00:37:03,424

Billy Bob Thornton: year on music and about a third on film

971

00:37:03,444 --> 00:37:03,964

Billy Bob Thornton: these days.

972

00:37:04,930 --> 00:37:05,331

Marc Preston: The help.

973

00:37:05,412 --> 00:37:06,054

Marc Preston: I'm alive.

974

00:37:06,696 --> 00:37:07,800

Marc Preston: The album when is that dropping?

975

00:37:08,351 --> 00:37:11,400

Marc Preston: I saw it was in April, correct, april 15th.

976

00:37:11,710 --> 00:37:14,650

Marc Preston: April 15th the tour kicks off.

977

00:37:14,750 --> 00:37:16,255

Marc Preston: I think you're all going to be in Ardmore

978

00:37:16,556 --> 00:37:17,660

Marc Preston: April 7th.

979

00:37:17,970 --> 00:37:19,958

Marc Preston: Ardmore, oklahoma, is when that starts off.

980

00:37:20,030 --> 00:37:21,194

Marc Preston: You're all going to be spending the summer,

981

00:37:21,414 --> 00:37:22,718

Marc Preston: or at least the first part of the summer,

982

00:37:22,759 --> 00:37:23,140

Marc Preston: touring.

983

00:37:23,390 --> 00:37:25,015

Marc Preston: You all do a tour bus, or are you all just

984

00:37:25,055 --> 00:37:26,439

Marc Preston: flying from location to location?

985

00:37:26,870 --> 00:37:28,173

JD Andrew: We play every single day.

986

00:37:31,230 --> 00:37:33,096

JD Andrew: They're not fully finished booking it.

987

00:37:33,177 --> 00:37:38,019

JD Andrew: Right now We've got 50 shows and two and a

988

00:37:38,039 --> 00:37:38,500

JD Andrew: half hours.

989

00:37:39,930 --> 00:37:41,574

JD Andrew: Yeah, but it's less than that.

990

00:37:44,870 --> 00:37:48,698

JD Andrew: It's 75 days total, including the rehearsal

991

00:37:48,838 --> 00:37:50,381

JD Andrew: and the driving to the first show.

992

00:37:51,630 --> 00:37:53,055

JD Andrew: That's six, seven, eight, nine.

993

00:37:54,110 --> 00:37:56,597

JD Andrew: It's like 50 shows and 65 days.

994

00:37:57,990 --> 00:38:00,535

JD Andrew: People have stretches where we're playing

995

00:38:00,656 --> 00:38:04,043

JD Andrew: 10 nights in a row, or at least seven

996

00:38:04,123 --> 00:38:06,017

JD Andrew: nights in a row, or eight nights in a row.

997

00:38:06,130 --> 00:38:07,696

Marc Preston: I'm just getting tired even hearing that.

998

00:38:08,510 --> 00:38:11,116

Marc Preston: I'm getting exhausted hearing about that

999

00:38:11,176 --> 00:38:11,617

Marc Preston: schedule.

Speaker:

00:38:14,590 --> 00:38:16,836

JD Andrew: For us, it's like we're not going out to

Speaker:

00:38:18,079 --> 00:38:19,931

JD Andrew: have a vacation or have fun, we're going

Speaker:

00:38:19,991 --> 00:38:21,074

JD Andrew: out to go work.

Speaker:

00:38:23,110 --> 00:38:24,855

JD Andrew: The most fun part is playing a show.

Speaker:

00:38:24,955 --> 00:38:28,974

JD Andrew: For people it's like sitting around a hotel

Speaker:

00:38:29,034 --> 00:38:31,721

JD Andrew: room or going bowling.

Speaker:

00:38:33,372 --> 00:38:36,358

JD Andrew: That's entertaining, but at the same time

Speaker:

00:38:36,378 --> 00:38:37,260

JD Andrew: we're out there to work.

Speaker:

00:38:39,470 --> 00:38:41,035

JD Andrew: We're not doing this all year round.

Speaker:

00:38:42,430 --> 00:38:46,638

JD Andrew: We don't have the luxury of just playing

Speaker:

00:38:46,658 --> 00:38:47,961

JD Andrew: weekends or something like that.

Speaker:

00:38:49,750 --> 00:38:50,774

JD Andrew: We have to make the most of it.

Speaker:

00:38:51,630 --> 00:38:54,115

JD Andrew: We ride in a bus and it's all nine of us

Speaker:

00:38:54,355 --> 00:38:57,101

JD Andrew: and 10 of us in the bus, with a trailer

Speaker:

00:38:57,121 --> 00:38:57,542

JD Andrew: behind it.

Speaker:

00:38:58,992 --> 00:39:01,198

JD Andrew: Going, driving overnight, sleeping in the

Speaker:

00:39:01,239 --> 00:39:03,606

JD Andrew: bus, waking up in a different city and

Speaker:

00:39:03,766 --> 00:39:05,894

JD Andrew: getting out and putting on a show.

Speaker:

00:39:06,750 --> 00:39:07,653

Marc Preston: When I was younger, I always thought that

Speaker:

00:39:07,673 --> 00:39:09,159

Marc Preston: whenever I talk to bands I was like God,

Speaker:

00:39:09,210 --> 00:39:10,355

Marc Preston: that sounds like so much fun.

Speaker:

00:39:10,670 --> 00:39:12,474

Marc Preston: But I think the way somebody's 2021

Speaker:

00:39:12,834 --> 00:39:13,977

Marc Preston: probably perceives it a little bit

Speaker:

00:39:13,997 --> 00:39:14,999

Marc Preston: different than now.

Speaker:

00:39:15,280 --> 00:39:16,161

Marc Preston: Like you said, you're going to work.

Speaker:

00:39:16,322 --> 00:39:16,662

Marc Preston: Yeah, now.

Speaker:

00:39:17,370 --> 00:39:18,995

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, it is fun for the first couple of

Speaker:

00:39:19,055 --> 00:39:20,600

Billy Bob Thornton: weeks and the last couple of weeks.

Speaker:

00:39:20,770 --> 00:39:22,375

Billy Bob Thornton: Then somewhere in the middle you get really

Speaker:

00:39:22,455 --> 00:39:22,776

Billy Bob Thornton: tired.

Speaker:

00:39:25,512 --> 00:39:26,677

Billy Bob Thornton: But it switches back and forth.

Speaker:

00:39:27,070 --> 00:39:31,138

Billy Bob Thornton: Honestly, our mood on the bus is completely

Speaker:

00:39:31,218 --> 00:39:34,124

Billy Bob Thornton: influenced by how the show went that night.

Speaker:

00:39:35,634 --> 00:39:38,443

Billy Bob Thornton: If we had a crummy show, the mood on the

Speaker:

00:39:38,464 --> 00:39:39,366

Billy Bob Thornton: bus is crumbier.

Speaker:

00:39:39,607 --> 00:39:40,430

Billy Bob Thornton: You know what I mean.

Speaker:

00:39:40,852 --> 00:39:41,956

Billy Bob Thornton: It's kind of almost like athletic.

Speaker:

00:39:42,170 --> 00:39:44,697

Marc Preston: It's almost like a football team driving

Speaker:

00:39:44,737 --> 00:39:46,762

Marc Preston: back in high school, back from a game.

Speaker:

00:39:47,110 --> 00:39:48,475

Marc Preston: The vibe on the bus definitely is

Speaker:

00:39:48,515 --> 00:39:49,839

Marc Preston: predicated upon how they played.

Speaker:

00:39:50,452 --> 00:39:52,752

Billy Bob Thornton: Oh, no doubt about it, and fortunately for

Speaker:

00:39:52,872 --> 00:39:56,339

Billy Bob Thornton: us on our tours, probably 90% of the shows

Speaker:

00:39:56,560 --> 00:39:56,941

Billy Bob Thornton: are amazing.

Speaker:

00:39:58,470 --> 00:40:00,296

Billy Bob Thornton: We have fun and it's good and the crowds

Speaker:

00:40:00,336 --> 00:40:00,678

Billy Bob Thornton: are great.

Speaker:

00:40:01,290 --> 00:40:03,398

Billy Bob Thornton: You just run into one every now and then.

Speaker:

00:40:03,439 --> 00:40:04,282

Billy Bob Thornton: That's kind of like.

Speaker:

00:40:05,005 --> 00:40:06,933

Billy Bob Thornton: It looks like the promoter didn't do a lot

Speaker:

00:40:06,953 --> 00:40:07,656

Billy Bob Thornton: of work on this.

Speaker:

00:40:08,851 --> 00:40:11,237

Marc Preston: Well, in baseball, if you get on base, half

Speaker:

00:40:11,257 --> 00:40:12,379

Marc Preston: the time you're in the Hall of Fame.

Speaker:

00:40:14,510 --> 00:40:15,856

Marc Preston: And by the way, I don't know where this

Speaker:

00:40:15,876 --> 00:40:18,096

Marc Preston: came I do seem to remember your Cardinals

Speaker:

00:40:18,237 --> 00:40:18,457

Marc Preston: fan.

Speaker:

00:40:19,490 --> 00:40:21,174

Marc Preston: We must be really happy that, whatever kind

Speaker:

00:40:21,214 --> 00:40:23,178

Marc Preston: of mischief was going on with the MLB,

Speaker:

00:40:23,218 --> 00:40:24,181

Marc Preston: they're actually going to be playing, so

Speaker:

00:40:24,201 --> 00:40:25,003

Marc Preston: you're going to be happy now.

Speaker:

00:40:25,531 --> 00:40:26,977

Billy Bob Thornton: Yeah, what was subtle all that.

Speaker:

00:40:27,530 --> 00:40:29,595

JD Andrew: Yeah, it would have been a really lame

Speaker:

00:40:29,655 --> 00:40:30,597

JD Andrew: spring if we didn't have.

Speaker:

00:40:30,617 --> 00:40:33,892

JD Andrew: You know, if we're on tour and there's no

Speaker:

00:40:33,952 --> 00:40:36,864

JD Andrew: baseball, you know it's like there's really

Speaker:

00:40:36,904 --> 00:40:39,113

JD Andrew: no point in touring because that's how we

Speaker:

00:40:39,153 --> 00:40:39,956

JD Andrew: pass our days.

Speaker:

00:40:40,291 --> 00:40:42,580

JD Andrew: I mean, you know we get off.

Speaker:

00:40:42,641 --> 00:40:44,027

JD Andrew: You know before the show we're watching

Speaker:

00:40:44,067 --> 00:40:45,512

JD Andrew: baseball, after the show we're watching

Speaker:

00:40:45,552 --> 00:40:47,438

JD Andrew: baseball games or highlights or you know

Speaker:

00:40:47,459 --> 00:40:47,739

JD Andrew: whatever.

Speaker:

00:40:48,210 --> 00:40:51,837

JD Andrew: So it's really what kind of you know gets

Speaker:

00:40:51,917 --> 00:40:55,143

JD Andrew: us through all you know, life is watching

Speaker:

00:40:55,183 --> 00:40:55,463

JD Andrew: baseball.

Speaker:

00:40:56,351 --> 00:40:59,238

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, that, and the LPGA and the PGA.

Speaker:

00:40:59,298 --> 00:41:00,080

Billy Bob Thornton: We watch golf too.

Speaker:

00:41:01,431 --> 00:41:03,156

Marc Preston: But, gentlemen, I appreciate your time and

Speaker:

00:41:03,176 --> 00:41:05,383

Marc Preston: I always like to wrap up whenever I chat

Speaker:

00:41:05,403 --> 00:41:06,467

Marc Preston: with somebody I sometimes call the

Speaker:

00:41:06,507 --> 00:41:07,470

Marc Preston: Preston's Lucky Southern.

Speaker:

00:41:07,530 --> 00:41:08,432

Marc Preston: I just like to throw out a couple of

Speaker:

00:41:08,472 --> 00:41:08,833

Marc Preston: questions.

Speaker:

00:41:08,990 --> 00:41:09,794

Marc Preston: It's just a fun thing.

Speaker:

00:41:10,115 --> 00:41:12,783

Marc Preston: First question Billy Bob will send this

Speaker:

00:41:12,803 --> 00:41:13,104

Marc Preston: your way.

Speaker:

00:41:14,016 --> 00:41:14,979

Marc Preston: What is your favorite?

Speaker:

00:41:15,561 --> 00:41:17,558

Marc Preston: That comfort food, that thing, it's like it

Speaker:

00:41:17,598 --> 00:41:18,803

Marc Preston: just brings you right back home.

Speaker:

00:41:18,855 --> 00:41:20,301

Marc Preston: It's just the thing you're gonna have on

Speaker:

00:41:20,321 --> 00:41:20,662

Marc Preston: the bus.

Speaker:

00:41:20,955 --> 00:41:22,040

Marc Preston: You know, that thing you just need.

Speaker:

00:41:22,436 --> 00:41:23,492

Billy Bob Thornton: Ha, ha, ha ha ha.

Speaker:

00:41:23,715 --> 00:41:26,063

Billy Bob Thornton: I know JD's laughing because he's done it.

Speaker:

00:41:27,660 --> 00:41:28,483

Billy Bob Thornton: I eat like a bird.

Speaker:

00:41:28,635 --> 00:41:30,583

Billy Bob Thornton: I eat nuts and berries and seeds.

Speaker:

00:41:31,437 --> 00:41:35,006

Billy Bob Thornton: I'm mostly vegan but I do usually eat fish.

Speaker:

00:41:36,838 --> 00:41:40,116

Billy Bob Thornton: But in terms of comfort food, that I, if I

Speaker:

00:41:40,237 --> 00:41:42,577

Billy Bob Thornton: could have it and you know, these days

Speaker:

00:41:42,637 --> 00:41:44,263

Billy Bob Thornton: vegan restaurants have gotten really good,

Speaker:

00:41:44,355 --> 00:41:45,841

Billy Bob Thornton: so you can actually find it, and there's

Speaker:

00:41:45,941 --> 00:41:47,299

Billy Bob Thornton: one close to us where I can have it.

Speaker:

00:41:47,935 --> 00:41:49,943

Billy Bob Thornton: But the two things that I would obviously

Speaker:

00:41:50,276 --> 00:41:53,725

Billy Bob Thornton: always, absolutely have are macaroni and

Speaker:

00:41:53,745 --> 00:41:56,238

Billy Bob Thornton: cheese and fried okra, fried okra.

Speaker:

00:41:56,318 --> 00:41:56,941

Marc Preston: You hit a home run.

Speaker:

00:41:57,061 --> 00:41:59,402

Marc Preston: Yeah, that's my touching on the Texas heart,

Speaker:

00:41:59,442 --> 00:42:00,796

Marc Preston: right there, my daughter.

Speaker:

00:42:00,816 --> 00:42:02,121

Marc Preston: I found my daughter today at lunch.

Speaker:

00:42:02,141 --> 00:42:03,044

Marc Preston: You saw it on her calendar.

Speaker:

00:42:03,095 --> 00:42:04,320

Marc Preston: I said, oh, we got fried okra today.

Speaker:

00:42:05,020 --> 00:42:05,952

Marc Preston: Oh, wow.

Speaker:

00:42:06,175 --> 00:42:07,742

Marc Preston: And JD, now who are three people?

Speaker:

00:42:07,795 --> 00:42:08,920

Marc Preston: If you could sit down and have a cup of

Speaker:

00:42:08,960 --> 00:42:11,021

Marc Preston: coffee with anybody, who would you like to

Speaker:

00:42:11,061 --> 00:42:12,497

Marc Preston: sit down with and have conversation?

Speaker:

00:42:13,178 --> 00:42:13,759

JD Andrew: Three people.

Speaker:

00:42:17,666 --> 00:42:25,160

JD Andrew: Well, yeah, I mean, george Harrison's

Speaker:

00:42:25,340 --> 00:42:27,857

JD Andrew: always a, you know, intriguing guy to me.

Speaker:

00:42:31,542 --> 00:42:38,601

JD Andrew: I, mickey Mantle, was one of my favorite

Speaker:

00:42:39,162 --> 00:42:39,965

JD Andrew: baseball players.

Speaker:

00:42:40,285 --> 00:42:42,642

JD Andrew: You know that I never saw when I was a lot,

Speaker:

00:42:42,795 --> 00:42:44,502

JD Andrew: or when he, you know, growing up.

Speaker:

00:42:44,555 --> 00:42:46,421

JD Andrew: He was retired by the time I, you know,

Speaker:

00:42:46,461 --> 00:42:47,103

JD Andrew: knew who he was.

Speaker:

00:42:47,323 --> 00:42:47,985

Marc Preston: Yeah, it don't mean to catch him.

Speaker:

00:42:48,255 --> 00:42:50,102

Marc Preston: My father always used to go to a bar in

Speaker:

00:42:50,182 --> 00:42:53,016

Marc Preston: Dallas and always used to see him and I've

Speaker:

00:42:53,036 --> 00:42:55,478

Marc Preston: got a box in my studio here of a ton of

Speaker:

00:42:55,699 --> 00:42:57,436

Marc Preston: autographed Mickey Mantle stuff and I'm

Speaker:

00:42:57,456 --> 00:42:58,280

Marc Preston: like so need to get.

Speaker:

00:42:58,815 --> 00:43:00,281

Marc Preston: I mean, I need to get it framed, you know.

Speaker:

00:43:00,415 --> 00:43:02,918

Marc Preston: But I'm like I just ton of stuff that and

Speaker:

00:43:02,938 --> 00:43:05,639

Marc Preston: BB King, you know I'm going, I was moving

Speaker:

00:43:05,659 --> 00:43:07,084

Marc Preston: and I saw this box and like what's in here?

Speaker:

00:43:07,155 --> 00:43:08,900

Marc Preston: I'm like holy shit, I need to get this

Speaker:

00:43:08,920 --> 00:43:09,462

Marc Preston: stuff framed.

Speaker:

00:43:10,635 --> 00:43:12,901

Marc Preston: But but who are the so besides your wife

Speaker:

00:43:13,061 --> 00:43:14,525

Marc Preston: and Mickey Mantle?

Speaker:

00:43:15,295 --> 00:43:17,624

JD Andrew: Mickey Mantle, george Harrison and you know

Speaker:

00:43:17,655 --> 00:43:22,556

JD Andrew: let's for a historical person like a

Speaker:

00:43:22,616 --> 00:43:24,984

JD Andrew: Benjamin Franklin, somebody historical, you

Speaker:

00:43:25,004 --> 00:43:26,279

JD Andrew: know, let's have, you know, somebody that's

Speaker:

00:43:26,379 --> 00:43:29,441

JD Andrew: really, really was there at the dawn of our

Speaker:

00:43:29,481 --> 00:43:29,823

JD Andrew: country.

Speaker:

00:43:30,156 --> 00:43:31,160

Marc Preston: Yeah, it'll be nice to have a little

Speaker:

00:43:31,200 --> 00:43:32,857

Marc Preston: reminder these days, you know.

Speaker:

00:43:33,680 --> 00:43:35,960

JD Andrew: Exactly what, what, what were you guys

Speaker:

00:43:36,021 --> 00:43:37,919

JD Andrew: really thinking about when you were making

Speaker:

00:43:37,939 --> 00:43:38,321

JD Andrew: this up?

Speaker:

00:43:38,615 --> 00:43:39,961

Marc Preston: And let me tell you what's been happening

Speaker:

00:43:40,075 --> 00:43:41,019

Marc Preston: in the last couple hundred years.

Speaker:

00:43:43,361 --> 00:43:44,785

Marc Preston: Now, Billy Bob, who was your when you were

Speaker:

00:43:44,805 --> 00:43:46,916

Marc Preston: a kid, who was your celebrity crush, my

Speaker:

00:43:46,936 --> 00:43:47,880

Marc Preston: celebrity crush.

Speaker:

00:43:51,135 --> 00:43:54,725

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, as a young kid it was a Suzanne

Speaker:

00:43:54,745 --> 00:44:02,522

Billy Bob Thornton: Plashette and Eva Gardner, and when I got a

Speaker:

00:44:02,562 --> 00:44:03,805

Billy Bob Thornton: little older, it was Betty.

Speaker:

00:44:03,846 --> 00:44:04,227

Marc Preston: Page.

Speaker:

00:44:05,235 --> 00:44:05,957

Marc Preston: You know that fits.

Speaker:

00:44:06,238 --> 00:44:07,923

Marc Preston: That fits with the Boxmasters vibe right

Speaker:

00:44:07,944 --> 00:44:08,084

Marc Preston: there.

Speaker:

00:44:08,655 --> 00:44:09,860

Marc Preston: I kind of think you know that's.

Speaker:

00:44:10,315 --> 00:44:11,340

Marc Preston: I see a theme developing.

Speaker:

00:44:11,975 --> 00:44:13,741

Marc Preston: And JD, now, if now it's gonna be a

Speaker:

00:44:13,781 --> 00:44:15,558

Marc Preston: Sophie's Choice thing for you, already I

Speaker:

00:44:15,598 --> 00:44:15,940

Marc Preston: can tell.

Speaker:

00:44:16,095 --> 00:44:17,721

Marc Preston: But if you're gonna be on an island one

Speaker:

00:44:17,761 --> 00:44:21,503

Marc Preston: year, you gotta you can bring one DVD and

Speaker:

00:44:21,663 --> 00:44:22,445

Marc Preston: one album with you.

Speaker:

00:44:22,995 --> 00:44:24,601

Marc Preston: What are those two things gonna be for one

Speaker:

00:44:24,641 --> 00:44:24,781

Marc Preston: year?

Speaker:

00:44:24,982 --> 00:44:27,842

JD Andrew: Wow, one DVD.

Speaker:

00:44:31,975 --> 00:44:33,762

JD Andrew: Well, yeah, it's not that hard.

Speaker:

00:44:33,995 --> 00:44:36,424

JD Andrew: Hoosiers is my favorite movie of all time

Speaker:

00:44:36,555 --> 00:44:38,983

JD Andrew: and I can watch it every single time it's

Speaker:

00:44:39,183 --> 00:44:41,000

JD Andrew: on and just put it on repeat.

Speaker:

00:44:43,555 --> 00:44:54,020

JD Andrew: And for album, man, let's just go with.

Speaker:

00:44:54,402 --> 00:44:56,161

JD Andrew: You know, I'd want something fun that I'm

Speaker:

00:44:56,261 --> 00:44:59,583

JD Andrew: only you know, since I can only listen to

Speaker:

00:44:59,884 --> 00:45:00,526

JD Andrew: the one record.

Speaker:

00:45:00,715 --> 00:45:04,565

JD Andrew: So let's do like Endless Summer by the

Speaker:

00:45:04,585 --> 00:45:05,086

JD Andrew: Beach Boys.

Speaker:

00:45:05,835 --> 00:45:10,559

Marc Preston: Very nice, very nice Something that'll give

Speaker:

00:45:10,579 --> 00:45:11,202

Marc Preston: me a good mood.

Speaker:

00:45:11,475 --> 00:45:13,141

Marc Preston: Well, there will be margaritas on this

Speaker:

00:45:13,282 --> 00:45:13,523

Marc Preston: island.

Speaker:

00:45:13,655 --> 00:45:15,221

Marc Preston: Just you know there will be a margarita

Speaker:

00:45:15,241 --> 00:45:16,660

Marc Preston: machine, so that'll work perfectly.

Speaker:

00:45:16,895 --> 00:45:18,381

JD Andrew: Great, yeah, yeah, exactly.

Speaker:

00:45:18,835 --> 00:45:20,615

Marc Preston: Now, billy Bob, if you were to like, from

Speaker:

00:45:20,635 --> 00:45:23,118

Marc Preston: the time you get up, how would you define a

Speaker:

00:45:23,178 --> 00:45:24,062

Marc Preston: perfect day for you?

Speaker:

00:45:24,475 --> 00:45:25,138

Marc Preston: Stem to stern.

Speaker:

00:45:25,198 --> 00:45:26,102

Marc Preston: What would be that day?

Speaker:

00:45:26,195 --> 00:45:27,380

Marc Preston: What would be going on for you?

Speaker:

00:45:29,675 --> 00:45:33,606

Billy Bob Thornton: When the blueberries are ripe for breakfast.

Speaker:

00:45:36,655 --> 00:45:40,284

Billy Bob Thornton: We didn't forget to order Almond Creamer

Speaker:

00:45:40,425 --> 00:45:44,501

Billy Bob Thornton: for the coffee, then having lunch with my

Speaker:

00:45:44,561 --> 00:45:46,556

Billy Bob Thornton: daughter, coming down to the studio, down

Speaker:

00:45:46,596 --> 00:45:49,219

Billy Bob Thornton: the hill, to the studio, recording with JD

Speaker:

00:45:50,743 --> 00:45:55,403

Billy Bob Thornton: until about midnight and going to bed and

Speaker:

00:45:55,443 --> 00:45:56,747

Billy Bob Thornton: doing the same thing over again.

Speaker:

00:45:56,955 --> 00:45:58,420

Billy Bob Thornton: I like recording and hanging out with

Speaker:

00:45:58,460 --> 00:45:59,363

Billy Bob Thornton: family, essentially.

Speaker:

00:46:00,356 --> 00:46:01,180

Marc Preston: I'm very much the same way.

Speaker:

00:46:01,215 --> 00:46:01,938

Marc Preston: It's about family.

Speaker:

00:46:01,998 --> 00:46:03,524

Marc Preston: For me this is a side question.

Speaker:

00:46:03,956 --> 00:46:05,983

Marc Preston: How did you navigate with your little one

Speaker:

00:46:06,023 --> 00:46:07,880

Marc Preston: there she's in high school with the

Speaker:

00:46:08,041 --> 00:46:08,503

Marc Preston: pandemic?

Speaker:

00:46:08,735 --> 00:46:10,843

Marc Preston: Did that go relatively smoothly for you?

Speaker:

00:46:11,576 --> 00:46:15,217

Billy Bob Thornton: Well, she's always been homeschooled so it

Speaker:

00:46:15,237 --> 00:46:16,944

Billy Bob Thornton: didn't really change anything for her.

Speaker:

00:46:17,115 --> 00:46:19,343

Billy Bob Thornton: So our schedule was really pretty much the

Speaker:

00:46:19,403 --> 00:46:21,139

Billy Bob Thornton: same during the lockdown, as it was

Speaker:

00:46:21,380 --> 00:46:21,741

Billy Bob Thornton: normally.

Speaker:

00:46:23,275 --> 00:46:24,942

Billy Bob Thornton: Like I said, we don't go many places.

Speaker:

00:46:25,115 --> 00:46:28,605

Billy Bob Thornton: My wife goes out more than my daughter and

Speaker:

00:46:28,645 --> 00:46:28,665

Billy Bob Thornton: I.

Speaker:

00:46:29,435 --> 00:46:32,304

Billy Bob Thornton: She goes to the store and shops and stuff

Speaker:

00:46:32,344 --> 00:46:35,043

Billy Bob Thornton: like that, but we pretty much stay at home

Speaker:

00:46:35,456 --> 00:46:38,665

Billy Bob Thornton: and we have a lot our friends and family

Speaker:

00:46:38,835 --> 00:46:40,857

Billy Bob Thornton: coming over to the house a lot, so most of

Speaker:

00:46:40,937 --> 00:46:42,222

Billy Bob Thornton: our social events are here.

Speaker:

00:46:43,795 --> 00:46:45,041

Marc Preston: I think we're cut from the same cloth.

Speaker:

00:46:46,779 --> 00:46:48,844

Marc Preston: I like my space and people, come over, I'll

Speaker:

00:46:48,884 --> 00:46:49,385

Marc Preston: entertain.

Speaker:

00:46:49,465 --> 00:46:50,187

Marc Preston: I like it like that.

Speaker:

00:46:50,355 --> 00:46:51,578

Marc Preston: But real quick, JD.

Speaker:

00:46:51,658 --> 00:46:55,175

Marc Preston: Now if, besides being the rock star, you

Speaker:

00:46:55,235 --> 00:46:56,500

Marc Preston: are an engineer?

Speaker:

00:46:56,861 --> 00:46:58,057

Marc Preston: If you weren't doing this, what would you

Speaker:

00:46:58,097 --> 00:46:58,860

Marc Preston: be doing for a living?

Speaker:

00:46:59,495 --> 00:47:00,718

JD Andrew: I've never had another.

Speaker:

00:47:02,482 --> 00:47:04,977

Marc Preston: I never really had a fallback, you know I

Speaker:

00:47:05,037 --> 00:47:06,538

Marc Preston: kind of Well, isn't that how you know

Speaker:

00:47:06,558 --> 00:47:07,281

Marc Preston: you're doing the right thing?

Speaker:

00:47:07,675 --> 00:47:08,418

Marc Preston: Right there, you know.

Speaker:

00:47:10,660 --> 00:47:12,405

JD Andrew: I mean I had the choice.

Speaker:

00:47:12,755 --> 00:47:13,820

JD Andrew: It's like going to college.

Speaker:

00:47:13,935 --> 00:47:16,304

JD Andrew: It was like, do I go to college for music

Speaker:

00:47:16,435 --> 00:47:18,242

JD Andrew: or do I go to college to play baseball?

Speaker:

00:47:18,915 --> 00:47:19,837

JD Andrew: So I chose music.

Speaker:

00:47:21,261 --> 00:47:29,902

JD Andrew: And then I Initially it wasn't to make

Speaker:

00:47:29,982 --> 00:47:31,940

JD Andrew: records, but at some point I had the

Speaker:

00:47:32,421 --> 00:47:33,705

JD Andrew: epiphany sort of thing.

Speaker:

00:47:33,775 --> 00:47:36,696

JD Andrew: It's like I want to make records, that's

Speaker:

00:47:36,736 --> 00:47:37,358

JD Andrew: what I want to do.

Speaker:

00:47:38,075 --> 00:47:39,862

JD Andrew: And so then I kind of went on the path of

Speaker:

00:47:39,902 --> 00:47:41,360

JD Andrew: like, okay, how do I make records?

Speaker:

00:47:41,875 --> 00:47:45,576

JD Andrew: And so I got myself into that place and I

Speaker:

00:47:45,616 --> 00:47:49,296

JD Andrew: really I never had another you know like

Speaker:

00:47:49,456 --> 00:47:51,222

JD Andrew: I'm supposed to do something else kind of

Speaker:

00:47:51,262 --> 00:47:51,603

JD Andrew: plan.

Speaker:

00:47:52,316 --> 00:47:54,923

JD Andrew: It was always, you know, like, get into the

Speaker:

00:47:54,963 --> 00:47:58,078

JD Andrew: music business, get into this recording

Speaker:

00:47:58,119 --> 00:47:58,680

JD Andrew: studios.

Speaker:

00:48:00,055 --> 00:48:02,763

JD Andrew: You know I'd kind of not anticipated making

Speaker:

00:48:02,843 --> 00:48:07,525

JD Andrew: music, you know, as a musician, but I, you

Speaker:

00:48:07,545 --> 00:48:09,743

JD Andrew: know, now that you know that's what I do,

Speaker:

00:48:10,416 --> 00:48:14,226

JD Andrew: it's kind of what I, I guess, always kind

Speaker:

00:48:14,286 --> 00:48:16,199

JD Andrew: of I actually acting.

Speaker:

00:48:16,219 --> 00:48:18,245

Marc Preston: I keep hearing people say throughout my

Speaker:

00:48:18,305 --> 00:48:19,920

Marc Preston: life like if you can't imagine doing

Speaker:

00:48:20,000 --> 00:48:21,618

Marc Preston: something else, that's how you know you're

Speaker:

00:48:21,638 --> 00:48:22,261

Marc Preston: doing the right thing.

Speaker:

00:48:22,855 --> 00:48:26,765

Marc Preston: But last question Billy Bob, you got the

Speaker:

00:48:26,806 --> 00:48:28,519

Marc Preston: DeLorean your crews are back to when you're

Speaker:

00:48:28,560 --> 00:48:28,981

Marc Preston: 16.

Speaker:

00:48:29,395 --> 00:48:30,941

Marc Preston: What is that piece of advice you're going

Speaker:

00:48:30,961 --> 00:48:32,257

Marc Preston: to drop to yourself that you're like?

Speaker:

00:48:32,377 --> 00:48:33,682

Marc Preston: I need to know this at that age.

Speaker:

00:48:34,395 --> 00:48:35,459

Marc Preston: Gonna, put me on a right track.

Speaker:

00:48:36,535 --> 00:48:38,341

Billy Bob Thornton: What you heard, you think to be, honest,

Speaker:

00:48:38,421 --> 00:48:42,164

Billy Bob Thornton: exactly A piece of advice that I wish I had.

Speaker:

00:48:42,355 --> 00:48:44,517

Marc Preston: Yeah, if you can go back in time to say I

Speaker:

00:48:44,618 --> 00:48:46,469

Marc Preston: wish I you know if I can go back in time.

Speaker:

00:48:46,595 --> 00:48:48,502

Marc Preston: I'm going to tell 16 year old me this thing.

Speaker:

00:48:49,415 --> 00:48:54,388

Billy Bob Thornton: I would say just remember, whim is a bad

Speaker:

00:48:54,448 --> 00:48:54,769

Billy Bob Thornton: word.

Speaker:

00:48:55,135 --> 00:48:57,062

Marc Preston: Whim is a bad word, I am.

Speaker:
