Marc Preston: Doing great.

53

00:01:48,555 --> 00:01:50,141

Marc Preston: So what kind of cookie were you eating

54

00:01:50,181 --> 00:01:50,502

Marc Preston: today?

55

00:01:50,863 --> 00:01:52,106

Matt Walsh: It was slightly healthier Marcet.

56

00:01:52,126 --> 00:01:55,843

Matt Walsh: It was like a Nature Valley peanut butter

57

00:01:55,963 --> 00:01:59,730

Matt Walsh: biscuit on granola cracker, that's no fun.

58

00:02:00,031 --> 00:02:02,141

Marc Preston: You know, i limited my friend.

59

00:02:02,502 --> 00:02:05,689

Marc Preston: His daughter was my dealer for Girl Scout

60

00:02:05,709 --> 00:02:07,782

Marc Preston: cookies, but she aged out of the Girl Scout

61

00:02:07,822 --> 00:02:08,083

Marc Preston: things.

62

00:02:08,183 --> 00:02:09,629

Marc Preston: Now it's like, where do I get my Girl Scout

63

00:02:09,649 --> 00:02:10,221

Marc Preston: cookies from?

64

00:02:11,023 --> 00:02:12,868

Marc Preston: It's one time a year, i just and it's.

65

00:02:12,888 --> 00:02:14,341

Marc Preston: There's so much shame involved in Girl

66

00:02:14,361 --> 00:02:16,407

Marc Preston: Scout cookies that nobody talks about, you

67

00:02:16,427 --> 00:02:17,701

Marc Preston: know, because you finish the whole box.

68

00:02:17,721 --> 00:02:19,386

Marc Preston: I have to look at my kids and, like you

69

00:02:19,406 --> 00:02:22,042

Marc Preston: know, yes, dad did that My daughter, emma,

70

00:02:22,303 --> 00:02:25,211

Marc Preston: and I were watching Life of the Party last

71

00:02:25,251 --> 00:02:25,351

Marc Preston: night.

72

00:02:25,371 --> 00:02:26,543

Marc Preston: We were trying to find something to watch.

73

00:02:26,563 --> 00:02:28,309

Marc Preston: I was like, well, hey, this gentleman I'm

74

00:02:28,349 --> 00:02:30,527

Marc Preston: talking to tomorrow is going to be on, he's

75

00:02:30,567 --> 00:02:32,796

Marc Preston: in this movie with Melissa McCarthy, so

76

00:02:32,816 --> 00:02:33,563

Marc Preston: we're going to watch this.

77

00:02:33,624 --> 00:02:34,448

Marc Preston: And she dug it.

78

00:02:34,488 --> 00:02:35,232

Marc Preston: She's 17,.

79

00:02:35,292 --> 00:02:37,282

Marc Preston: You know, i was kind of going down, kind of

80

00:02:37,302 --> 00:02:39,955

Marc Preston: doing a little bit of cursory prep for our

81

00:02:39,995 --> 00:02:42,887

Marc Preston: chat here And I'm like, man, you've, you're

82

00:02:42,967 --> 00:02:43,791

Marc Preston: one of those guys I love.

83

00:02:43,811 --> 00:02:46,601

Marc Preston: You've been working nonstop, you're always

84

00:02:46,882 --> 00:02:47,223

Marc Preston: working.

85

00:02:47,544 --> 00:02:48,928

Marc Preston: Are you not a guy that likes to take a lot

86

00:02:48,968 --> 00:02:50,882

Marc Preston: of long vacations and hiatuses?

87

00:02:51,123 --> 00:02:52,748

Marc Preston: You always seem to be doing something, are

88

00:02:52,768 --> 00:02:52,848

Marc Preston: you?

89

00:02:53,009 --> 00:02:55,925

Marc Preston: are you working pretty consistently from

90

00:02:55,965 --> 00:02:56,447

Marc Preston: your point of view?

91

00:02:57,389 --> 00:02:58,231

Matt Walsh: Yeah, i guess I.

92

00:02:58,511 --> 00:03:02,406

Matt Walsh: I guess I do probably enjoy working and

93

00:03:03,187 --> 00:03:05,672

Matt Walsh: staying busy And I love, obviously, comedy.

94

00:03:06,333 --> 00:03:08,987

Matt Walsh: It brings me great joy to make things funny

95

00:03:09,048 --> 00:03:12,059

Matt Walsh: or help create things that are funny, so I

96

00:03:12,080 --> 00:03:14,370

Matt Walsh: guess I do enjoy being busy, yeah, yeah

97

00:03:14,498 --> 00:03:16,757

Matt Walsh: kind of always in a state of creation.

98

00:03:16,884 --> 00:03:18,503

Marc Preston: You know, seems like is that?

99

00:03:18,543 --> 00:03:20,689

Marc Preston: do you write also, or are you focusing

100

00:03:20,749 --> 00:03:22,112

Marc Preston: mostly just on acting?

101

00:03:22,942 --> 00:03:25,848

Matt Walsh: No, i do write, i write a lot actually.

102

00:03:25,988 --> 00:03:29,522

Matt Walsh: I started in, you know, sketch in Chicago

103

00:03:29,622 --> 00:03:32,067

Matt Walsh: And so I've always been like a writer,

104

00:03:32,488 --> 00:03:35,140

Matt Walsh: performer, and then, you know, we had a

105

00:03:35,161 --> 00:03:37,025

Matt Walsh: show on Comedy Central and we all we were

106

00:03:37,045 --> 00:03:40,401

Matt Walsh: the writers, and then various I do a lot of

107

00:03:40,521 --> 00:03:43,328

Matt Walsh: improv, which is sort of writing but not

108

00:03:43,369 --> 00:03:45,021

Matt Walsh: putting it on paper, it's sort of writing

109

00:03:45,081 --> 00:03:45,662

Matt Walsh: on your feet.

110

00:03:45,842 --> 00:03:50,251

Matt Walsh: So I have always kind of written and then

111

00:03:50,912 --> 00:03:53,284

Matt Walsh: recently, or the last five, 10 years, i

112

00:03:53,304 --> 00:03:55,971

Matt Walsh: feel like I've written several things, some

113

00:03:55,991 --> 00:03:57,464

Matt Walsh: of them gotten made, some of them are

114

00:03:57,504 --> 00:03:58,407

Matt Walsh: waiting to get made.

115

00:03:58,427 --> 00:04:00,121

Matt Walsh: A couple of movies, a few movies.

116

00:04:00,262 --> 00:04:01,927

Marc Preston: Yeah, it kind of remind me a little bit of

117

00:04:03,050 --> 00:04:04,321

Marc Preston: like one of the guys I would love to talk

118

00:04:04,362 --> 00:04:06,387

Marc Preston: to you one day, nat Faxon.

119

00:04:06,488 --> 00:04:08,181

Marc Preston: Y'all have y'all kind of run in similar

120

00:04:08,261 --> 00:04:08,722

Marc Preston: circles.

121

00:04:09,704 --> 00:04:11,507

Marc Preston: He's very talented.

122

00:04:12,389 --> 00:04:15,254

Marc Preston: Yeah, he's written some really just some

123

00:04:15,294 --> 00:04:17,746

Marc Preston: kind of obscure stuff that I really enjoyed

124

00:04:17,786 --> 00:04:19,812

Marc Preston: quite a bit, you know, and whenever he

125

00:04:19,860 --> 00:04:22,247

Marc Preston: shows up it's always kind of as a small

126

00:04:22,287 --> 00:04:23,751

Marc Preston: little role in it, but he wrote the

127

00:04:23,800 --> 00:04:24,823

Marc Preston: screenplay, you know.

128

00:04:24,963 --> 00:04:27,750

Marc Preston: So, yeah, kind of go back, origin story,

129

00:04:28,010 --> 00:04:28,592

Marc Preston: chicago.

130

00:04:28,772 --> 00:04:30,366

Marc Preston: Were you coming from a family that was

131

00:04:31,069 --> 00:04:31,612

Marc Preston: creative?

132

00:04:31,873 --> 00:04:33,420

Marc Preston: I mean, were these folks, were your folks,

133

00:04:34,002 --> 00:04:36,673

Marc Preston: doing something theatrical at all, or were

134

00:04:36,693 --> 00:04:37,837

Marc Preston: you kind of the oddball out?

135

00:04:38,339 --> 00:04:40,868

Matt Walsh: Yeah, i don't think traditionally nobody

136

00:04:40,948 --> 00:04:42,092

Matt Walsh: was in theater.

137

00:04:42,152 --> 00:04:45,323

Matt Walsh: My dad was like a salesman, my mom kind of.

138

00:04:45,965 --> 00:04:48,494

Matt Walsh: We had seven kids so my mom kept the house

139

00:04:48,595 --> 00:04:52,428

Matt Walsh: running and everything organized, so but my

140

00:04:52,468 --> 00:04:55,518

Matt Walsh: dad was very performative, he was in and

141

00:04:55,638 --> 00:04:56,884

Matt Walsh: everybody had a sense of humor.

142

00:04:57,044 --> 00:05:00,018

Matt Walsh: So I guess in that way I probably learned

143

00:05:00,058 --> 00:05:02,005

Matt Walsh: that you know storytelling, joke telling,

144

00:05:03,772 --> 00:05:05,337

Matt Walsh: that kind of thing, attention getting.

145

00:05:05,598 --> 00:05:07,465

Matt Walsh: I learned all that inside my own family.

146

00:05:07,565 --> 00:05:09,351

Matt Walsh: But I didn't really do anything

147

00:05:11,258 --> 00:05:12,623

Matt Walsh: professional or professional.

148

00:05:13,145 --> 00:05:15,955

Matt Walsh: Until like my last year of high school I

149

00:05:15,995 --> 00:05:17,180

Matt Walsh: did like a variety show.

150

00:05:17,280 --> 00:05:20,948

Matt Walsh: That was kind of my first taste of like

151

00:05:21,028 --> 00:05:22,051

Matt Walsh: stage performance.

152

00:05:22,351 --> 00:05:24,366

Marc Preston: Are you seeing seven, seven kids?

153

00:05:24,406 --> 00:05:26,215

Marc Preston: Where did you fall in the birth order in

154

00:05:26,235 --> 00:05:26,658

Marc Preston: your family?

155

00:05:26,718 --> 00:05:28,365

Marc Preston: I was the fourth, i was right in the middle.

156

00:05:28,707 --> 00:05:30,173

Marc Preston: Yeah, see, i grew up as an only child.

157

00:05:30,293 --> 00:05:32,307

Marc Preston: So I get lived vicariously through people

158

00:05:32,327 --> 00:05:34,579

Marc Preston: when they say you know, they came from a

159

00:05:34,600 --> 00:05:36,065

Marc Preston: big family and I've got three kids.

160

00:05:36,105 --> 00:05:37,610

Marc Preston: So I'm kind of like watching what it's like

161

00:05:37,630 --> 00:05:38,743

Marc Preston: to have siblings through them.

162

00:05:38,824 --> 00:05:40,589

Marc Preston: But was that?

163

00:05:41,753 --> 00:05:43,764

Marc Preston: were you the only one out of the out of the

164

00:05:43,784 --> 00:05:46,437

Marc Preston: troop who ended up going into entertainment,

165

00:05:46,578 --> 00:05:47,922

Marc Preston: or do you have any brothers or sisters that

166

00:05:47,962 --> 00:05:48,544

Marc Preston: followed you in?

167

00:05:49,226 --> 00:05:52,582

Matt Walsh: I have an older brother who acted and still

168

00:05:52,622 --> 00:05:55,208

Matt Walsh: does some acting, but he's has a real job.

169

00:05:55,268 --> 00:05:58,222

Matt Walsh: He's like in the construction game and

170

00:05:58,262 --> 00:06:00,788

Matt Walsh: things like that, but he's also funny or he

171

00:06:00,888 --> 00:06:04,062

Matt Walsh: also performs and does bit parts

172

00:06:04,122 --> 00:06:04,744

Matt Walsh: occasionally.

173

00:06:04,864 --> 00:06:09,073

Matt Walsh: So I would say the two of us are probably

174

00:06:09,093 --> 00:06:10,564

Matt Walsh: the most interested in it.

175

00:06:11,107 --> 00:06:13,336

Marc Preston: Yeah, well, in Chicago that was sort of the

176

00:06:13,437 --> 00:06:15,764

Marc Preston: epicenter with Second City and all that You

177

00:06:15,784 --> 00:06:16,807

Marc Preston: had that in your backyard.

178

00:06:17,849 --> 00:06:19,683

Marc Preston: Did you have any of that kind of influence

179

00:06:19,743 --> 00:06:20,526

Marc Preston: when you were growing up?

180

00:06:20,566 --> 00:06:22,663

Marc Preston: Did you go see their comedy shows or improv

181

00:06:22,683 --> 00:06:24,087

Marc Preston: shows or what have you, when you were a kid?

182

00:06:24,549 --> 00:06:26,743

Matt Walsh: No, not when I was a kid, but I think I saw

183

00:06:27,745 --> 00:06:29,810

Matt Walsh: Second City when I was in college.

184

00:06:30,632 --> 00:06:31,962

Matt Walsh: They came through and did one of their

185

00:06:32,023 --> 00:06:34,354

Matt Walsh: touring company shows and it was really

186

00:06:34,454 --> 00:06:37,405

Matt Walsh: captivating and fun And I'm like it was

187

00:06:37,465 --> 00:06:39,230

Matt Walsh: almost magical, Like I'd never seen

188

00:06:39,270 --> 00:06:39,931

Matt Walsh: anything like that.

189

00:06:39,992 --> 00:06:43,088

Matt Walsh: I of course watched kids in the hall

190

00:06:43,209 --> 00:06:45,435

Matt Walsh: perhaps, or Second City TV by that point,

191

00:06:45,560 --> 00:06:48,146

Matt Walsh: and certainly a center at life, but the

192

00:06:48,186 --> 00:06:49,389

Matt Walsh: live stuff I'd never seen.

193

00:06:49,429 --> 00:06:52,744

Matt Walsh: And then I got involved doing improv.

194

00:06:52,825 --> 00:06:54,810

Matt Walsh: My last year of college I was going into

195

00:06:54,830 --> 00:06:57,466

Matt Walsh: Chicago to study improv and then driving

196

00:06:57,506 --> 00:06:59,391

Matt Walsh: back to my college, which was like an hour

197

00:06:59,411 --> 00:07:00,523

Matt Walsh: and a half outside of the city.

198

00:07:01,706 --> 00:07:03,111

Matt Walsh: I was doing that like once a week and then

199

00:07:03,131 --> 00:07:06,668

Matt Walsh: when I graduated I was doing psychology.

200

00:07:06,708 --> 00:07:08,352

Matt Walsh: I was going to be a psychologist, i studied

201

00:07:08,400 --> 00:07:10,545

Matt Walsh: psychology in college and then at night I

202

00:07:10,585 --> 00:07:15,004

Matt Walsh: was doing sketch and exploring theater and

203

00:07:15,044 --> 00:07:15,245

Matt Walsh: comedy.

204

00:07:15,285 --> 00:07:16,629

Marc Preston: When was the decision and how did you make

205

00:07:16,669 --> 00:07:18,744

Marc Preston: that a decision to diverge off the

206

00:07:20,088 --> 00:07:22,977

Marc Preston: psychotherapy path on to working on stage?

207

00:07:23,017 --> 00:07:25,046

Marc Preston: Was there a conscious decision or did just

208

00:07:25,066 --> 00:07:26,876

Marc Preston: kind of just find yourself more and more

209

00:07:26,936 --> 00:07:28,464

Marc Preston: spending time doing stuff on stage?

210

00:07:28,624 --> 00:07:30,934

Matt Walsh: I think I liked them both equally.

211

00:07:31,015 --> 00:07:34,046

Matt Walsh: at some point I really did appreciate like

212

00:07:34,267 --> 00:07:36,314

Matt Walsh: the potential of like guiding people

213

00:07:36,354 --> 00:07:38,743

Matt Walsh: through pathology or, you know, depression

214

00:07:38,803 --> 00:07:39,305

Matt Walsh: etc.

215

00:07:39,988 --> 00:07:42,036

Matt Walsh: But working on an adolescent psych ward in

216

00:07:42,358 --> 00:07:46,133

Matt Walsh: Chicago at Northwestern, it was very taxing

217

00:07:46,193 --> 00:07:47,800

Matt Walsh: and those people who can do it well are

218

00:07:48,363 --> 00:07:50,472

Matt Walsh: saints and I realized that I don't think I

219

00:07:50,512 --> 00:07:51,376

Matt Walsh: could handle the pressure.

220

00:07:51,557 --> 00:07:56,113

Matt Walsh: So at some point I took a little walkabout.

221

00:07:56,133 --> 00:07:57,799

Matt Walsh: I went to Europe for like three or four

222

00:07:57,859 --> 00:08:00,228

Matt Walsh: months in the middle of my psychology

223

00:08:00,289 --> 00:08:02,899

Matt Walsh: career and then I came back and I just

224

00:08:02,939 --> 00:08:06,470

Matt Walsh: committed to being poor, willing to be poor,

225

00:08:07,493 --> 00:08:09,078

Matt Walsh: and just started hustling.

226

00:08:09,118 --> 00:08:11,468

Matt Walsh: Yeah, i just knew I couldn't do psychology,

227

00:08:11,529 --> 00:08:12,936

Matt Walsh: so I guess I'd better figure out this

228

00:08:12,996 --> 00:08:14,763

Matt Walsh: comedy thing or performing thing.

229

00:08:14,783 --> 00:08:15,746

Marc Preston: Yeah, that's kind of what I did.

230

00:08:16,006 --> 00:08:16,428

Marc Preston: I went to the.

231

00:08:16,809 --> 00:08:18,382

Marc Preston: My first school was University of North

232

00:08:18,423 --> 00:08:20,449

Marc Preston: Texas, which was known as a big psychology

233

00:08:20,489 --> 00:08:20,750

Marc Preston: school.

234

00:08:20,930 --> 00:08:22,745

Marc Preston: You know all different kinds of paths.

235

00:08:22,785 --> 00:08:24,870

Marc Preston: You know some people do Industrial

236

00:08:24,911 --> 00:08:26,484

Marc Preston: psychology and things like that, and I was

237

00:08:26,504 --> 00:08:27,909

Marc Preston: just kind of interested in it and I think I

238

00:08:27,929 --> 00:08:30,167

Marc Preston: was doing well, until I hit one class that

239

00:08:30,548 --> 00:08:33,420

Marc Preston: actually involved some aspect of math and I

240

00:08:33,440 --> 00:08:35,245

Marc Preston: was like, oh no, no, no, it's some kind of

241

00:08:35,646 --> 00:08:36,629

Marc Preston: my daughter who's at too.

242

00:08:36,689 --> 00:08:38,202

Marc Preston: I'm sorry, i don't want to do it.

243

00:08:38,583 --> 00:08:40,449

Marc Preston: Loyola, which is right next door to Tulane

244

00:08:40,509 --> 00:08:41,271

Marc Preston: in New Orleans.

245

00:08:43,087 --> 00:08:45,154

Marc Preston: She took that same class and got an A in it

246

00:08:45,395 --> 00:08:46,640

Marc Preston: and I'm like, okay, well, my kids are

247

00:08:46,660 --> 00:08:49,086

Marc Preston: clearly smarter than me, but that may be a

248

00:08:49,126 --> 00:08:50,009

Marc Preston: direction she goes.

249

00:08:50,169 --> 00:08:52,663

Matt Walsh: Yeah, i similarly would never have become a

250

00:08:52,703 --> 00:08:54,830

Matt Walsh: psychiatrist because the science and the

251

00:08:54,870 --> 00:08:57,007

Matt Walsh: math of it all would have defeated me, but

252

00:08:57,116 --> 00:08:58,934

Matt Walsh: I felt like a psychologist.

253

00:08:59,043 --> 00:09:00,722

Matt Walsh: I could maybe have figured out.

254

00:09:00,742 --> 00:09:01,043

Marc Preston: Where'd you go?

255

00:09:01,063 --> 00:09:03,971

Matt Walsh: school like Northwestern or No, i went to

256

00:09:04,051 --> 00:09:05,924

Matt Walsh: Northern Illinois, which is just outside of

257

00:09:07,027 --> 00:09:08,572

Matt Walsh: it's, in DeKalb, which is like an hour and

258

00:09:08,592 --> 00:09:10,645

Matt Walsh: a half west of Chicago.

259

00:09:10,805 --> 00:09:13,071

Marc Preston: Now this is jumping a little bit ahead, but

260

00:09:13,111 --> 00:09:15,083

Marc Preston: you're one of the founding members of UCB

261

00:09:15,184 --> 00:09:16,528

Marc Preston: right, which I don't know how.

262

00:09:16,588 --> 00:09:18,922

Marc Preston: I didn't know that, but that's.

263

00:09:19,523 --> 00:09:21,888

Marc Preston: I've had a few guests on that have been

264

00:09:21,928 --> 00:09:22,149

Marc Preston: there.

265

00:09:22,710 --> 00:09:25,383

Marc Preston: That seems to have been almost like the

266

00:09:25,423 --> 00:09:27,167

Marc Preston: California second city.

267

00:09:27,268 --> 00:09:28,752

Marc Preston: You know, you have a lot of people, don't?

268

00:09:28,780 --> 00:09:30,766

Marc Preston: you have like Lorne Michaels and his crew

269

00:09:30,826 --> 00:09:33,041

Marc Preston: come there to scout for a Saturday night

270

00:09:33,061 --> 00:09:33,503

Marc Preston: live.

271

00:09:33,543 --> 00:09:35,713

Marc Preston: I mean, that's a pretty profound thing.

272

00:09:35,734 --> 00:09:38,224

Marc Preston: Now, who are the co-founders with you of

273

00:09:38,324 --> 00:09:38,766

Marc Preston: UCB?

274

00:09:39,469 --> 00:09:41,436

Matt Walsh: I started that we came out of Chicago and

275

00:09:41,496 --> 00:09:44,363

Matt Walsh: it was me, amy Poehler, ian Roberts and

276

00:09:44,384 --> 00:09:47,891

Matt Walsh: Matt Besser and we opened one in New York

277

00:09:47,991 --> 00:09:52,828

Matt Walsh: in like 98 and then we opened one out here

278

00:09:52,848 --> 00:09:56,757

Matt Walsh: in California in like 2005 I think, and

279

00:09:56,777 --> 00:10:00,507

Matt Walsh: yeah, What was the motivation for starting

280

00:10:00,527 --> 00:10:00,667

Matt Walsh: that?

281

00:10:00,687 --> 00:10:03,301

Marc Preston: Were you just looking for additional

282

00:10:03,341 --> 00:10:05,948

Marc Preston: creative outlets, or were you just, was

283

00:10:05,969 --> 00:10:07,642

Marc Preston: there something that wasn't there, like

284

00:10:07,682 --> 00:10:08,885

Marc Preston: there's a need for this?

285

00:10:08,986 --> 00:10:10,991

Marc Preston: you know, there's a need for kind of an

286

00:10:11,100 --> 00:10:13,909

Marc Preston: improv, a place where people can come check

287

00:10:13,929 --> 00:10:15,320

Marc Preston: it out and also to learn, or kind of.

288

00:10:15,340 --> 00:10:16,323

Marc Preston: What was the impetus for that?

289

00:10:16,864 --> 00:10:18,950

Matt Walsh: We didn't have that much foresight or

290

00:10:19,211 --> 00:10:19,532

Matt Walsh: vision.

291

00:10:20,342 --> 00:10:24,234

Matt Walsh: We went to New York with a suitcase full of

292

00:10:24,274 --> 00:10:26,622

Matt Walsh: props and dreams and hopes to get a sketch

293

00:10:26,642 --> 00:10:29,134

Matt Walsh: show on TV, which we were lucky enough to

294

00:10:29,195 --> 00:10:31,404

Matt Walsh: do, and while we were doing that, we had

295

00:10:31,485 --> 00:10:34,496

Matt Walsh: created a free improv show on Sunday nights

296

00:10:34,557 --> 00:10:38,069

Matt Walsh: which attracted this huge, hungry audience

297

00:10:38,109 --> 00:10:39,493

Matt Walsh: of young people who had never seen

298

00:10:40,055 --> 00:10:42,324

Matt Walsh: long-form improv, which is what we learned

299

00:10:42,364 --> 00:10:44,636

Matt Walsh: in Chicago through a guy named Del Close,

300

00:10:44,676 --> 00:10:47,527

Matt Walsh: who's sort of like the legend from Chicago.

301

00:10:48,350 --> 00:10:50,678

Matt Walsh: And so we started teaching classes to fund

302

00:10:50,779 --> 00:10:52,907

Matt Walsh: our sketch dream and make short films, and

303

00:10:52,927 --> 00:10:55,314

Matt Walsh: then We had a decent amount of people.

304

00:10:55,354 --> 00:10:58,182

Matt Walsh: We were teaching and doing shows in New

305

00:10:58,222 --> 00:10:58,462

Matt Walsh: York.

306

00:10:59,191 --> 00:11:00,978

Matt Walsh: You always had to move your props out every

307

00:11:01,059 --> 00:11:02,605

Matt Walsh: night and you had to pay to rent the

308

00:11:02,646 --> 00:11:04,672

Matt Walsh: theater 300 bucks and you had to pay a tech

309

00:11:04,692 --> 00:11:05,053

Matt Walsh: guy.

310

00:11:05,574 --> 00:11:08,662

Matt Walsh: So it's a financially oppressive city to do

311

00:11:08,742 --> 00:11:09,143

Matt Walsh: theater.

312

00:11:09,243 --> 00:11:12,215

Matt Walsh: And at some point we had enough students

313

00:11:12,235 --> 00:11:13,419

Matt Walsh: that we thought why don't we get our own

314

00:11:13,459 --> 00:11:14,000

Matt Walsh: clubhouse?

315

00:11:14,061 --> 00:11:16,877

Matt Walsh: So there was an old strip club that had

316

00:11:16,917 --> 00:11:19,906

Matt Walsh: been shut down, that was cheap and dirty,

317

00:11:20,006 --> 00:11:22,474

Matt Walsh: and we figured we could probably make rent

318

00:11:22,635 --> 00:11:25,023

Matt Walsh: if we just took a lease on it.

319

00:11:25,625 --> 00:11:26,227

Marc Preston: So you've got.

320

00:11:26,247 --> 00:11:28,053

Marc Preston: How many locations do you have a UCB right

321

00:11:28,093 --> 00:11:30,782

Marc Preston: now besides New York and LA?

322

00:11:31,244 --> 00:11:32,709

Matt Walsh: There's nothing in New York anymore.

323

00:11:32,749 --> 00:11:33,912

Matt Walsh: I'm currently no longer involved.

324

00:11:33,932 --> 00:11:35,435

Matt Walsh: We all stepped away from it.

325

00:11:35,455 --> 00:11:37,519

Matt Walsh: We all sold it over a year ago.

326

00:11:37,660 --> 00:11:40,452

Matt Walsh: So really Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

327

00:11:40,633 --> 00:11:41,836

Marc Preston: But what a great legacy though.

328

00:11:41,876 --> 00:11:43,801

Marc Preston: I mean, how cool is that that you created

329

00:11:43,881 --> 00:11:46,418

Marc Preston: something that is talked about as sort of

330

00:11:47,220 --> 00:11:49,328

Marc Preston: because you say UCB to a civilian and like

331

00:11:49,348 --> 00:11:49,669

Marc Preston: what do you mean?

332

00:11:49,689 --> 00:11:51,337

Marc Preston: but you say it to somebody who's an

333

00:11:51,377 --> 00:11:53,326

Marc Preston: upcoming actor, they're like, oh cool, yeah,

334

00:11:53,347 --> 00:11:54,070

Marc Preston: i got to go check that out.

335

00:11:54,231 --> 00:11:55,054

Marc Preston: I want to be part of that.

336

00:11:55,114 --> 00:11:57,565

Marc Preston: You know, i don't know how you can maintain

337

00:11:57,605 --> 00:11:59,633

Marc Preston: a career but also be running this thing.

338

00:11:59,653 --> 00:12:01,480

Marc Preston: That kind of seemed to get really big and

339

00:12:01,560 --> 00:12:02,001

Marc Preston: popular.

340

00:12:02,042 --> 00:12:04,651

Marc Preston: I mean, it was just did you just not have

341

00:12:04,671 --> 00:12:06,776

Marc Preston: the time to kind of do everything all at

342

00:12:06,956 --> 00:12:07,397

Marc Preston: once, or?

343

00:12:07,939 --> 00:12:09,603

Matt Walsh: Yeah, It was hard after a while.

344

00:12:09,623 --> 00:12:12,338

Matt Walsh: We, you know, I think we'd done it for 20,

345

00:12:12,559 --> 00:12:14,125

Matt Walsh: 20 years plus and it was.

346

00:12:14,326 --> 00:12:15,671

Matt Walsh: it was a lot of work and it was a lot of

347

00:12:16,413 --> 00:12:18,197

Matt Walsh: managing and it was, you know, at some

348

00:12:18,237 --> 00:12:19,781

Matt Walsh: point we were all like done doing that.

349

00:12:19,901 --> 00:12:20,563

Matt Walsh: So it is hard.

350

00:12:22,570 --> 00:12:24,435

Matt Walsh: Yeah, A lot of emails, a lot of meetings, a

351

00:12:24,475 --> 00:12:26,620

Matt Walsh: lot of personnel issues.

352

00:12:26,680 --> 00:12:28,023

Matt Walsh: you know it was difficult.

353

00:12:28,290 --> 00:12:30,215

Marc Preston: So, And part of it's like I got into acting

354

00:12:30,276 --> 00:12:32,742

Marc Preston: to not have to do homework for a living you

355

00:12:32,762 --> 00:12:32,902

Marc Preston: know.

356

00:12:33,350 --> 00:12:34,181

Matt Walsh: Yeah, And it was.

357

00:12:34,259 --> 00:12:36,118

Matt Walsh: In some ways it was easier when we were

358

00:12:36,195 --> 00:12:37,839

Matt Walsh: poor and nobody was coming to it.

359

00:12:37,916 --> 00:12:39,197

Matt Walsh: You know, it was just like a little

360

00:12:39,237 --> 00:12:41,044

Matt Walsh: clubhouse and we could do our shows and we

361

00:12:41,085 --> 00:12:43,793

Matt Walsh: could practice our sketches and do our free

362

00:12:43,853 --> 00:12:46,759

Matt Walsh: improv show and teach a few classes, And

363

00:12:46,799 --> 00:12:48,583

Matt Walsh: then when it got bigger, it was, it was.

364

00:12:48,810 --> 00:12:50,695

Matt Walsh: It was more, you know, more challenge, more

365

00:12:50,735 --> 00:12:51,096

Matt Walsh: headaches.

366

00:12:51,698 --> 00:12:53,221

Marc Preston: When did the moved LA happen for you?

367

00:12:53,810 --> 00:12:58,359

Matt Walsh: I did a sketch show on Comedy Central and

368

00:12:58,379 --> 00:13:00,843

Matt Walsh: then I worked on the Daily Show for almost

369

00:13:00,883 --> 00:13:03,215

Matt Walsh: two years And then after that I knocked

370

00:13:03,255 --> 00:13:06,606

Matt Walsh: around New York just doing commercials for

371

00:13:07,348 --> 00:13:09,413

Matt Walsh: I don't know a couple years And then I got

372

00:13:09,434 --> 00:13:13,343

Matt Walsh: a pilot for a show and I figured that was

373

00:13:13,403 --> 00:13:16,472

Matt Walsh: the time to jump into LA, because I don't

374

00:13:16,492 --> 00:13:18,902

Matt Walsh: think I was going to do much else in New

375

00:13:18,922 --> 00:13:19,725

Matt Walsh: York at that point.

376

00:13:19,886 --> 00:13:20,950

Marc Preston: As far as building your career.

377

00:13:21,131 --> 00:13:22,999

Marc Preston: Was that the original plan, though, to be

378

00:13:23,039 --> 00:13:24,566

Marc Preston: in New York, or was it all?

379

00:13:24,827 --> 00:13:26,012

Marc Preston: were you knowing the road was going to take

380

00:13:26,032 --> 00:13:27,016

Marc Preston: you to LA eventually?

381

00:13:27,358 --> 00:13:29,447

Matt Walsh: Again, i never really can give myself

382

00:13:29,507 --> 00:13:30,711

Matt Walsh: credit for having a plan.

383

00:13:31,953 --> 00:13:35,239

Matt Walsh: I think going to New York was we're going

384

00:13:35,259 --> 00:13:36,882

Matt Walsh: to stay as a group.

385

00:13:37,123 --> 00:13:38,592

Matt Walsh: We're going to stay here for six months and

386

00:13:38,652 --> 00:13:40,982

Matt Walsh: see if we can get lucky and then figure it

387

00:13:41,082 --> 00:13:42,147

Matt Walsh: out the next six months.

388

00:13:42,207 --> 00:13:44,155

Matt Walsh: If we got any kind of luck, we'd commit to

389

00:13:44,195 --> 00:13:45,961

Matt Walsh: another six months And then at some point

390

00:13:46,824 --> 00:13:48,811

Matt Walsh: years later I'd been in New York for eight

391

00:13:48,851 --> 00:13:51,396

Matt Walsh: years and I was fortunate enough to have a

392

00:13:51,456 --> 00:13:55,984

Matt Walsh: job in LA to, you know, start over, i guess.

393

00:13:56,230 --> 00:13:59,317

Matt Walsh: So I and I'd already had a lot of time in

394

00:13:59,457 --> 00:13:59,638

Matt Walsh: LA.

395

00:13:59,698 --> 00:14:01,762

Matt Walsh: I'd gone out there for, you know, pilot

396

00:14:01,802 --> 00:14:04,853

Matt Walsh: season and various small parts or whatever.

397

00:14:04,894 --> 00:14:07,559

Matt Walsh: So I had experience in LA and friends.

398

00:14:08,240 --> 00:14:11,594

Marc Preston: So it seemed like a simpler jump you know

399

00:14:11,614 --> 00:14:13,359

Marc Preston: What era of the Daily Show were you working?

400

00:14:13,439 --> 00:14:14,642

Marc Preston: Was it back in Colbert?

401

00:14:14,930 --> 00:14:16,914

Matt Walsh: Yeah, 2000, 2001,.

402

00:14:17,254 --> 00:14:21,622

Matt Walsh: John Stewart Colbert Mo Rocco was doing.

403

00:14:21,642 --> 00:14:22,623

Marc Preston: Steve Carell was on it.

404

00:14:23,751 --> 00:14:25,418

Marc Preston: They came out of Chicago as well right,

405

00:14:25,639 --> 00:14:26,744

Marc Preston: yeah, i knew I.

406

00:14:26,945 --> 00:14:28,130

Matt Walsh: yeah, yeah, they were second city guys,

407

00:14:28,290 --> 00:14:32,043

Matt Walsh: Carell and Colbert, and I knew Colbert in

408

00:14:32,084 --> 00:14:32,585

Matt Walsh: Chicago.

409

00:14:32,605 --> 00:14:35,631

Matt Walsh: I didn't know Steven until I got to New

410

00:14:35,671 --> 00:14:39,732

Matt Walsh: York but Colbert and I were kind of friends

411

00:14:40,213 --> 00:14:41,613

Matt Walsh: in Chicago.

412

00:14:48,762 --> 00:14:51,008

Marc Preston: Is it cool or is it odd, or what's that

413

00:14:51,028 --> 00:14:52,713

Marc Preston: feeling when you look back and you remember

414

00:14:52,773 --> 00:14:54,738

Marc Preston: when everybody was poor and you're just

415

00:14:54,758 --> 00:14:56,663

Marc Preston: kind of floating around there, there's, but

416

00:14:56,843 --> 00:14:58,126

Marc Preston: nobody had really hit yet?

417

00:14:58,515 --> 00:14:59,822

Marc Preston: Is it ever kind of surreal to look at your

418

00:14:59,842 --> 00:15:02,214

Marc Preston: contemporaries and go, okay, i remember

419

00:15:02,254 --> 00:15:04,060

Marc Preston: when we were poor and eating ramen noodles

420

00:15:04,120 --> 00:15:05,624

Marc Preston: and trying to make people laugh, you know,

421

00:15:05,644 --> 00:15:06,707

Marc Preston: and now here's where we are.

422

00:15:06,795 --> 00:15:09,463

Marc Preston: Is that ever surreal for you, or is it kind

423

00:15:09,523 --> 00:15:09,643

Marc Preston: of?

424

00:15:09,704 --> 00:15:10,245

Marc Preston: how does that hit?

425

00:15:10,775 --> 00:15:14,860

Matt Walsh: I don't know that I like have looked at it

426

00:15:15,161 --> 00:15:21,068

Matt Walsh: clearly, or I tend to not look at that

427

00:15:21,108 --> 00:15:22,230

Matt Walsh: stuff too long, i don't know.

428

00:15:24,157 --> 00:15:26,982

Matt Walsh: I can only speak to my wife, who's very

429

00:15:27,063 --> 00:15:29,948

Matt Walsh: sweet has hung up some of the things you

430

00:15:29,988 --> 00:15:30,089

Matt Walsh: know.

431

00:15:30,596 --> 00:15:32,421

Matt Walsh: When you do a show or a movie, you collect

432

00:15:32,461 --> 00:15:34,975

Matt Walsh: a poster here and there and she's hung up a

433

00:15:35,056 --> 00:15:37,021

Matt Walsh: bit of an area of our house to sort of

434

00:15:37,482 --> 00:15:39,536

Matt Walsh: celebrate some accomplishments And I can't

435

00:15:39,576 --> 00:15:42,425

Matt Walsh: even enjoy looking at that.

436

00:15:42,735 --> 00:15:44,846

Matt Walsh: So I don't know if that's unhealthy or

437

00:15:44,906 --> 00:15:46,575

Matt Walsh: healthy, but that's kind of how I operate.

438

00:15:46,635 --> 00:15:49,437

Matt Walsh: I don't tend to look back, like I hopefully

439

00:15:49,898 --> 00:15:52,665

Matt Walsh: keep relationships, like I enjoy a lot of

440

00:15:52,685 --> 00:15:53,727

Matt Walsh: the people I've worked with.

441

00:15:54,075 --> 00:15:56,944

Matt Walsh: But as far as like taking stock and you

442

00:15:56,984 --> 00:16:00,495

Matt Walsh: know understanding it, it doesn't appeal to

443

00:16:00,535 --> 00:16:02,061

Matt Walsh: me yet but I'm sure I will.

444

00:16:02,595 --> 00:16:04,380

Matt Walsh: I'm older than you so I probably should.

445

00:16:04,440 --> 00:16:05,343

Matt Walsh: But yeah, Yeah.

446

00:16:06,635 --> 00:16:08,162

Marc Preston: It's funny I look back at the very bad.

447

00:16:08,182 --> 00:16:10,291

Marc Preston: when I was 17, i started working in radio

448

00:16:10,432 --> 00:16:12,420

Marc Preston: in Dallas, texas, 90, and the path is

449

00:16:12,440 --> 00:16:14,577

Marc Preston: syndicated, shown, and my ex-wife would be

450

00:16:14,617 --> 00:16:16,323

Marc Preston: like why are you carting all these boxes

451

00:16:16,383 --> 00:16:16,985

Marc Preston: around all my old?

452

00:16:17,215 --> 00:16:19,038

Marc Preston: well, when you had to record on tape I was

453

00:16:19,058 --> 00:16:19,942

Marc Preston: like that's all my stuff.

454

00:16:20,075 --> 00:16:21,298

Marc Preston: And then I made the mistake of going and

455

00:16:21,358 --> 00:16:23,524

Marc Preston: listening to some of it some few years ago

456

00:16:23,564 --> 00:16:25,517

Marc Preston: and like oh good God, you know.

457

00:16:25,537 --> 00:16:27,624

Marc Preston: so I'm like that needs to stay in the past.

458

00:16:27,735 --> 00:16:29,480

Marc Preston: I mean I can appreciate the experiences,

459

00:16:29,520 --> 00:16:32,427

Marc Preston: but I don't really I don't need to remind

460

00:16:32,475 --> 00:16:34,643

Marc Preston: myself of, creatively, where I was back

461

00:16:34,703 --> 00:16:34,823

Marc Preston: then.

462

00:16:35,356 --> 00:16:36,400

Marc Preston: No, i was just going to share.

463

00:16:36,420 --> 00:16:38,728

Matt Walsh: Like, i think a lot of that sort of

464

00:16:39,972 --> 00:16:41,838

Matt Walsh: scrapbooking of the things we do is to sort

465

00:16:41,878 --> 00:16:43,864

Matt Walsh: of prove our identity, that we're, that

466

00:16:43,884 --> 00:16:44,906

Matt Walsh: we're getting somewhere.

467

00:16:45,115 --> 00:16:47,381

Matt Walsh: And sometimes you have to do it to make a

468

00:16:47,462 --> 00:16:47,823

Matt Walsh: reel.

469

00:16:47,963 --> 00:16:49,657

Matt Walsh: So you collect things, so you have samples

470

00:16:49,677 --> 00:16:52,043

Matt Walsh: to maybe advance your career.

471

00:16:53,275 --> 00:16:54,635

Matt Walsh: But yeah, i don't look at the boxes, i

472

00:16:54,655 --> 00:16:58,499

Matt Walsh: don't open them up, i just try to like keep

473

00:16:58,559 --> 00:17:01,726

Matt Walsh: moving, you know but I do like when friends

474

00:17:01,766 --> 00:17:03,457

Matt Walsh: will send me a picture, i'll send it.

475

00:17:06,278 --> 00:17:07,161

Matt Walsh: All right, go, go go.

476

00:17:09,918 --> 00:17:16,077

Matt Walsh: I had to let the release the hounds, but I

477

00:17:16,137 --> 00:17:17,902

Matt Walsh: do love it when friends send me a picture

478

00:17:17,942 --> 00:17:20,731

Matt Walsh: from like 25 years ago, backstage or

479

00:17:20,811 --> 00:17:21,132

Matt Walsh: something.

480

00:17:21,172 --> 00:17:23,380

Matt Walsh: That warms me And that's like, wow, we all

481

00:17:23,400 --> 00:17:26,223

Matt Walsh: look so young, so but you don't really feel

482

00:17:26,263 --> 00:17:26,584

Matt Walsh: any older.

483

00:17:26,635 --> 00:17:28,018

Marc Preston: I feel like I'm perpetually this kind of

484

00:17:28,038 --> 00:17:31,307

Marc Preston: hanging at 25, you know, kind of my no, my

485

00:17:31,367 --> 00:17:33,695

Marc Preston: back will remind me I'm not 25 anymore, but

486

00:17:33,735 --> 00:17:35,662

Marc Preston: you know yeah no, what kind of pooch you

487

00:17:35,702 --> 00:17:35,863

Marc Preston: got.

488

00:17:36,255 --> 00:17:38,744

Matt Walsh: We have two moths that were just in here.

489

00:17:38,955 --> 00:17:45,196

Matt Walsh: One is probably I forget what it is My wife

490

00:17:45,216 --> 00:17:47,623

Matt Walsh: did that DNA thing and the DNA thing said

491

00:17:47,663 --> 00:17:49,277

Matt Walsh: Chihuahua and something else And it doesn't

492

00:17:49,317 --> 00:17:50,160

Matt Walsh: look like a Chihuahua.

493

00:17:50,555 --> 00:17:52,301

Marc Preston: They're doing DNA on dogs now also.

494

00:17:52,381 --> 00:17:54,057

Matt Walsh: Yeah, you can do that, you can like send it

495

00:17:54,157 --> 00:17:57,106

Matt Walsh: in from saliva, i think.

496

00:17:57,355 --> 00:18:00,342

Matt Walsh: And then I talked to the vet when I took

497

00:18:00,382 --> 00:18:02,086

Matt Walsh: her in and he thinks she's more of a

498

00:18:02,146 --> 00:18:04,621

Matt Walsh: spaniel, but she's like a mutt, like a mutt

499

00:18:04,661 --> 00:18:05,003

Matt Walsh: rescue.

500

00:18:05,175 --> 00:18:06,835

Matt Walsh: And then the little guy that's Penny, and

501

00:18:06,856 --> 00:18:10,008

Matt Walsh: then the little guy JJ is like I don't know

502

00:18:10,028 --> 00:18:10,249

Matt Walsh: what, you.

503

00:18:10,269 --> 00:18:12,558

Matt Walsh: He's got a fat kind of corgi body, but he's

504

00:18:12,658 --> 00:18:13,942

Matt Walsh: also white spaniel.

505

00:18:14,675 --> 00:18:16,218

Matt Walsh: This could be going on for a while.

506

00:18:16,278 --> 00:18:19,844

Matt Walsh: I apologize, it's okay, come on in, chill

507

00:18:19,885 --> 00:18:20,966

Matt Walsh: out, come on, come on.

508

00:18:22,916 --> 00:18:26,299

Marc Preston: This is bad radio, as they say but Oh, no,

509

00:18:26,319 --> 00:18:28,246

Marc Preston: no, no, yes, it's all good.

510

00:18:28,730 --> 00:18:29,435

Marc Preston: I'm a big dog lover.

511

00:18:29,495 --> 00:18:30,818

Marc Preston: In fact we had a golden retriever and

512

00:18:30,838 --> 00:18:32,643

Marc Preston: Marlowe guy passed a few weeks back and

513

00:18:33,064 --> 00:18:37,140

Marc Preston: we're missing him And so he was and so I'm

514

00:18:37,280 --> 00:18:40,826

Marc Preston: moving down to an island down in South

515

00:18:40,866 --> 00:18:42,649

Marc Preston: Texas here, probably in October.

516

00:18:42,935 --> 00:18:44,119

Marc Preston: So I told my daughter I said when we go

517

00:18:44,159 --> 00:18:45,843

Marc Preston: down she's going to take her gap year and

518

00:18:45,863 --> 00:18:47,517

Marc Preston: she's going to come down with me And I said

519

00:18:47,537 --> 00:18:48,762

Marc Preston: we got to get another golden retriever

520

00:18:48,802 --> 00:18:50,919

Marc Preston: puppy And I'm like going, i forgot about

521

00:18:50,959 --> 00:18:52,644

Marc Preston: those puppy years, you know, and how much

522

00:18:52,664 --> 00:18:53,586

Marc Preston: attention you got to give them.

523

00:18:54,095 --> 00:18:55,961

Marc Preston: But you know I'm missing having a pooch

524

00:18:56,001 --> 00:18:56,482

Marc Preston: around here.

525

00:18:56,563 --> 00:18:58,297

Marc Preston: I always love them And I see some talking

526

00:18:58,337 --> 00:18:59,540

Marc Preston: with someone and they've got a dog.

527

00:18:59,721 --> 00:19:00,944

Marc Preston: So it's a big dog.

528

00:19:00,964 --> 00:19:02,016

Matt Walsh: Well, that's hard, Is it?

529

00:19:02,919 --> 00:19:04,717

Matt Walsh: are you taking time off Because it's hard

530

00:19:04,757 --> 00:19:05,400

Matt Walsh: to lose a dog?

531

00:19:05,475 --> 00:19:07,021

Matt Walsh: I mean, I'm sorry to hear that It's really

532

00:19:07,081 --> 00:19:07,422

Matt Walsh: hard.

533

00:19:08,377 --> 00:19:09,020

Marc Preston: It went on hot.

534

00:19:09,060 --> 00:19:09,622

Marc Preston: I'm looking over here.

535

00:19:10,035 --> 00:19:11,179

Marc Preston: He's got a little urn over here, you know,

536

00:19:11,420 --> 00:19:12,444

Marc Preston: on my shelf.

537

00:19:12,775 --> 00:19:13,537

Marc Preston: But no, he he was.

538

00:19:13,598 --> 00:19:15,122

Marc Preston: We got him when he was a puppy and my kids

539

00:19:15,162 --> 00:19:15,683

Marc Preston: grew up with him.

540

00:19:15,724 --> 00:19:16,325

Marc Preston: He was 10.

541

00:19:16,855 --> 00:19:18,860

Marc Preston: And the hard part was I thought, you know,

542

00:19:18,880 --> 00:19:20,725

Marc Preston: my other dogs had lived.

543

00:19:20,926 --> 00:19:23,241

Marc Preston: My other golden, my previous dog, 13, 14

544

00:19:23,261 --> 00:19:23,763

Marc Preston: years old.

545

00:19:23,955 --> 00:19:25,921

Marc Preston: So you know that phrase man plans, god

546

00:19:25,981 --> 00:19:26,322

Marc Preston: laughs.

547

00:19:26,403 --> 00:19:27,325

Marc Preston: You know something.

548

00:19:27,355 --> 00:19:28,795

Marc Preston: We've got a few more years with him And

549

00:19:28,815 --> 00:19:31,216

Marc Preston: then he, he was sick, sick, and about two,

550

00:19:31,236 --> 00:19:32,442

Marc Preston: three weeks later he passed.

551

00:19:32,615 --> 00:19:34,171

Marc Preston: And yeah, i actually took a little bit of a

552

00:19:34,212 --> 00:19:34,495

Marc Preston: hiatus.

553

00:19:34,535 --> 00:19:35,799

Marc Preston: I was like I don't think I'm going to be

554

00:19:35,839 --> 00:19:37,664

Marc Preston: very good sitting down talking with people

555

00:19:38,065 --> 00:19:39,981

Marc Preston: and stuff, but it's been a little while.

556

00:19:40,195 --> 00:19:42,182

Marc Preston: So you know it's, it's, you get a little

557

00:19:42,202 --> 00:19:42,584

Marc Preston: bit older.

558

00:19:42,795 --> 00:19:44,821

Marc Preston: It doesn't get easier, but you can, you,

559

00:19:45,022 --> 00:19:46,165

Marc Preston: you navigate it better.

560

00:19:46,575 --> 00:19:47,939

Marc Preston: That's one of those things I think age kind

561

00:19:47,959 --> 00:19:50,386

Marc Preston: of gives you is harder for me to talk to,

562

00:19:50,755 --> 00:19:52,260

Marc Preston: to address it with my kids.

563

00:19:52,300 --> 00:19:53,063

Marc Preston: That's the hard part.

564

00:19:53,495 --> 00:19:54,819

Marc Preston: I was like, wait a minute, i got to be the

565

00:19:54,859 --> 00:19:56,725

Marc Preston: adult here and actually help them out and

566

00:19:56,775 --> 00:19:58,880

Marc Preston: make sure that they're handling it so much

567

00:19:58,941 --> 00:20:00,805

Marc Preston: better than I did, though, which is so

568

00:20:00,885 --> 00:20:01,106

Marc Preston: funny.

569

00:20:02,798 --> 00:20:03,340

Marc Preston: Um, do you have?

570

00:20:03,541 --> 00:20:05,386

Marc Preston: uh, you got kids as well.

571

00:20:05,715 --> 00:20:09,222

Matt Walsh: Yeah, we have, uh, three kids and they're

572

00:20:09,242 --> 00:20:10,024

Matt Walsh: not in college at.

573

00:20:10,064 --> 00:20:12,288

Matt Walsh: My son just turned 16 yesterday.

574

00:20:12,515 --> 00:20:15,126

Matt Walsh: And, speaking of gap year, how did that

575

00:20:15,187 --> 00:20:15,347

Matt Walsh: come?

576

00:20:15,408 --> 00:20:17,015

Matt Walsh: because I told my son, you know, because

577

00:20:17,035 --> 00:20:19,065

Matt Walsh: he's starting to think about colleges and I

578

00:20:19,366 --> 00:20:20,874

Matt Walsh: I introduced the idea and like, well,

579

00:20:20,894 --> 00:20:23,227

Matt Walsh: there's also this thing where, like, cause

580

00:20:23,268 --> 00:20:25,057

Matt Walsh: he wanted to learn Portuguese, I'm like you

581

00:20:25,077 --> 00:20:26,765

Matt Walsh: could spend three months in, you know,

582

00:20:26,825 --> 00:20:29,337

Matt Walsh: Brazil and work for a company or live with

583

00:20:29,397 --> 00:20:31,107

Matt Walsh: a family and come back with a language

584

00:20:31,147 --> 00:20:32,113

Matt Walsh: before you go to college.

585

00:20:32,153 --> 00:20:33,117

Matt Walsh: You know things like that.

586

00:20:34,080 --> 00:20:34,642

Marc Preston: That's funny.

587

00:20:35,355 --> 00:20:36,602

Marc Preston: You say that that's what it my daughter

588

00:20:36,622 --> 00:20:36,904

Marc Preston: Emma's doing.

589

00:20:36,944 --> 00:20:39,379

Marc Preston: She graduated, she, she's one of the same

590

00:20:39,399 --> 00:20:41,023

Marc Preston: thing with your son, uh, covid.

591

00:20:41,846 --> 00:20:44,161

Marc Preston: Yeah, probably threw off what school was

592

00:20:44,202 --> 00:20:48,340

Marc Preston: like for him And she uh, went back to a

593

00:20:48,961 --> 00:20:51,446

Marc Preston: nice school and she's like she just got so

594

00:20:51,506 --> 00:20:52,447

Marc Preston: used to online learning.

595

00:20:52,507 --> 00:20:54,797

Marc Preston: She's a self starter, she gets A's and she

596

00:20:54,837 --> 00:20:56,081

Marc Preston: just that's.

597

00:20:56,121 --> 00:20:57,425

Marc Preston: She said I just want to finish school like

598

00:20:57,465 --> 00:20:57,665

Marc Preston: that.

599

00:20:57,955 --> 00:20:59,521

Marc Preston: So she finished her junior and senior year

600

00:21:00,355 --> 00:21:00,916

Marc Preston: This last year.

601

00:21:00,957 --> 00:21:02,962

Marc Preston: She did both years together and she got A's

602

00:21:03,002 --> 00:21:03,924

Marc Preston: and did just great.

603

00:21:04,855 --> 00:21:05,860

Marc Preston: So she's taken the gap year.

604

00:21:06,035 --> 00:21:09,585

Marc Preston: She's still just 17 and she's got a program.

605

00:21:09,895 --> 00:21:10,900

Marc Preston: She's and I can find out about it.

606

00:21:11,035 --> 00:21:13,200

Marc Preston: It's actually a really neat program in

607

00:21:13,280 --> 00:21:15,706

Marc Preston: Barcelona, uh, where she goes for, i think,

608

00:21:15,786 --> 00:21:17,378

Marc Preston: four weeks, but if she does a six week

609

00:21:17,438 --> 00:21:19,284

Marc Preston: program she gets college credit for it.

610

00:21:19,877 --> 00:21:21,103

Marc Preston: Uh, but she's going to go there and it's a

611

00:21:21,465 --> 00:21:23,294

Marc Preston: immersive language thing and they have

612

00:21:23,334 --> 00:21:24,829

Marc Preston: these really beautiful dorms.

613

00:21:25,051 --> 00:21:26,118

Marc Preston: Before we go, i'll get the name of the

614

00:21:26,218 --> 00:21:27,342

Marc Preston: organization that does it.

615

00:21:28,417 --> 00:21:29,160

Marc Preston: Um and uh.

616

00:21:29,200 --> 00:21:32,612

Marc Preston: But but she's going to uh, uh, we're Jewish

617

00:21:32,673 --> 00:21:34,497

Marc Preston: and there are some kind of a Jewish thing

618

00:21:34,518 --> 00:21:35,880

Marc Preston: that she's doing where she's going to

619

00:21:36,081 --> 00:21:39,816

Marc Preston: Europe, uh, going to, uh, amsterdam and

620

00:21:40,177 --> 00:21:42,003

Marc Preston: four countries and then Israel on the back

621

00:21:42,103 --> 00:21:44,019

Marc Preston: end, and then she's doing that this summer

622

00:21:44,180 --> 00:21:46,446

Marc Preston: and then in the fall, uh, she's going to do

623

00:21:46,486 --> 00:21:50,289

Marc Preston: and I think she said there's a date where

624

00:21:50,369 --> 00:21:51,714

Marc Preston: most of the kids are there and it's going

625

00:21:51,735 --> 00:21:53,521

Marc Preston: to be sometime early fall when they get the

626

00:21:53,561 --> 00:21:54,364

Marc Preston: biggest group of kids.

627

00:21:54,475 --> 00:21:56,020

Marc Preston: It sounds like a really wonderful program

628

00:21:56,040 --> 00:21:56,661

Marc Preston: in Barcelona.

629

00:21:56,702 --> 00:21:59,037

Marc Preston: But these, this language thing, uh, she did,

630

00:21:59,097 --> 00:22:00,683

Marc Preston: um, she did, uh, uh.

631

00:22:01,044 --> 00:22:02,770

Marc Preston: Her elementary was, uh, what they call it

632

00:22:02,850 --> 00:22:03,332

Marc Preston: immersion.

633

00:22:03,633 --> 00:22:04,315

Marc Preston: Is that what they call it?

634

00:22:04,395 --> 00:22:04,957

Marc Preston: What I think?

635

00:22:04,998 --> 00:22:06,805

Marc Preston: immersion, where they are learning in both

636

00:22:06,865 --> 00:22:09,697

Marc Preston: languages, you know so my kids are so much

637

00:22:09,737 --> 00:22:11,718

Marc Preston: smarter than me, so, like looking at him

638

00:22:11,738 --> 00:22:13,082

Marc Preston: going, you know they're like dad.

639

00:22:13,102 --> 00:22:14,706

Marc Preston: are you not saying that right when I speak

640

00:22:14,746 --> 00:22:15,087

Marc Preston: Spanish?

641

00:22:15,455 --> 00:22:17,441

Marc Preston: Yes, honey, but I'm, i'm speaking Texas

642

00:22:17,461 --> 00:22:19,065

Marc Preston: Spanish you know, I ever seen George Bush

643

00:22:19,085 --> 00:22:19,125

Marc Preston: Jr.

644

00:22:20,196 --> 00:22:22,121

Marc Preston: Um, but uh, but anyway.

645

00:22:22,161 --> 00:22:23,665

Marc Preston: but yeah, i'll find out about that, but I

646

00:22:23,705 --> 00:22:24,447

Marc Preston: think it's a great thing.

647

00:22:24,555 --> 00:22:25,478

Marc Preston: You know, it's not like when we were

648

00:22:25,538 --> 00:22:27,965

Marc Preston: younger, it's like graduate high school, go

649

00:22:28,005 --> 00:22:29,518

Marc Preston: to college, you know, and I think,

650

00:22:29,578 --> 00:22:31,765

Marc Preston: especially with, i think it helped.

651

00:22:32,376 --> 00:22:34,704

Marc Preston: I'm a big fan of letting kids calibrate to

652

00:22:34,805 --> 00:22:38,036

Marc Preston: what where their passions are and adjust as

653

00:22:38,076 --> 00:22:40,383

Marc Preston: they go, not have to be like, well, i'm on

654

00:22:40,404 --> 00:22:42,141

Marc Preston: this path, i'm going to, i got to do it.

655

00:22:42,375 --> 00:22:43,619

Marc Preston: You know, i always thought it was odd that

656

00:22:43,639 --> 00:22:44,942

Marc Preston: they have to do uh.

657

00:22:44,982 --> 00:22:47,058

Marc Preston: they did their uh internship their last

658

00:22:47,118 --> 00:22:48,949

Marc Preston: year and then discover, oh, this isn't

659

00:22:48,989 --> 00:22:50,115

Marc Preston: really what I want to do, but they're

660

00:22:50,276 --> 00:22:51,361

Marc Preston: already in their senior years.

661

00:22:51,655 --> 00:22:54,905

Matt Walsh: So yeah, no, I, I, I completely agree.

662

00:22:54,995 --> 00:22:58,162

Matt Walsh: And it's also like, yeah, who knows what?

663

00:22:59,225 --> 00:23:01,197

Matt Walsh: I think it's great experience, Like you can

664

00:23:01,257 --> 00:23:03,567

Matt Walsh: take a year, like you said, instead of

665

00:23:03,607 --> 00:23:05,355

Matt Walsh: doing the internship on the back end, go

666

00:23:05,535 --> 00:23:08,323

Matt Walsh: experiment or like learn a language, like

667

00:23:08,423 --> 00:23:12,393

Matt Walsh: live in a country, and then, uh, it's

668

00:23:12,474 --> 00:23:12,975

Matt Walsh: creative.

669

00:23:13,156 --> 00:23:15,915

Matt Walsh: And it's also like there's no plan, Like

670

00:23:15,935 --> 00:23:16,337

Matt Walsh: you said.

671

00:23:16,417 --> 00:23:18,505

Matt Walsh: You know you, man makes plan.

672

00:23:18,545 --> 00:23:20,995

Matt Walsh: And God laughs because I similarly thought,

673

00:23:21,396 --> 00:23:22,902

Matt Walsh: oh, I'm going to be a psychologist and

674

00:23:23,022 --> 00:23:23,704

Matt Walsh: everybody does it.

675

00:23:23,795 --> 00:23:26,064

Matt Walsh: They go to college for accounting or

676

00:23:26,144 --> 00:23:28,433

Matt Walsh: bookkeeping or teaching, and then they do

677

00:23:28,474 --> 00:23:29,738

Matt Walsh: it for a year and they're like, Oh my God,

678

00:23:29,758 --> 00:23:30,581

Matt Walsh: what was I thinking?

679

00:23:31,435 --> 00:23:33,960

Matt Walsh: So any kind of rounding out of, or

680

00:23:34,240 --> 00:23:36,404

Matt Walsh: obviously travel is the best education

681

00:23:36,444 --> 00:23:36,945

Matt Walsh: there is.

682

00:23:37,767 --> 00:23:39,169

Marc Preston: It's really beneficial Yeah.

683

00:23:39,235 --> 00:23:42,500

Matt Walsh: Meeting people and seeing lives and uh,

684

00:23:42,901 --> 00:23:45,525

Matt Walsh: yeah, it's, it's just eye opening in every

685

00:23:45,565 --> 00:23:45,766

Matt Walsh: way.

686

00:23:46,567 --> 00:23:47,488

Marc Preston: How old are your other kids?

687

00:23:47,549 --> 00:23:48,350

Marc Preston: Are they 18?

688

00:23:48,695 --> 00:23:52,839

Matt Walsh: Uh 13, going to be 14 in a week, and then

689

00:23:53,079 --> 00:23:53,600

Matt Walsh: uh, 11.

690

00:23:53,900 --> 00:23:56,266

Marc Preston: You're still doing that, that phase of life

691

00:23:56,306 --> 00:23:58,672

Marc Preston: where you're kind of the Uber driver also.

692

00:23:58,780 --> 00:23:59,322

Marc Preston: Oh my god you.

693

00:23:59,362 --> 00:24:01,089

Matt Walsh: So we have a lot in common.

694

00:24:01,160 --> 00:24:02,667

Matt Walsh: Yeah, we have a lot.

695

00:24:02,780 --> 00:24:02,981

Matt Walsh: I was.

696

00:24:03,141 --> 00:24:06,610

Matt Walsh: I got excited because next year two of them

697

00:24:06,650 --> 00:24:08,061

Matt Walsh: are going to be at the same school, so that

698

00:24:08,222 --> 00:24:10,449

Matt Walsh: goes from three drop offs to two drop offs.

699

00:24:10,961 --> 00:24:11,643

Marc Preston: One point in time.

700

00:24:11,804 --> 00:24:13,208

Marc Preston: All three in mind were three separate

701

00:24:13,248 --> 00:24:13,670

Marc Preston: schools.

702

00:24:14,181 --> 00:24:14,863

Marc Preston: I had to.

703

00:24:15,968 --> 00:24:17,875

Marc Preston: I don't know, like I'm trying to be a

704

00:24:17,915 --> 00:24:19,441

Marc Preston: responsible driver, but I'm like I don't

705

00:24:19,461 --> 00:24:20,225

Marc Preston: know how we do this.

706

00:24:20,320 --> 00:24:21,545

Marc Preston: I don't know, you know, then they're all

707

00:24:21,605 --> 00:24:23,585

Marc Preston: start times, so, yeah, so it was the single

708

00:24:23,605 --> 00:24:23,826

Marc Preston: dad.

709

00:24:23,866 --> 00:24:25,250

Marc Preston: Life was interesting for a while.

710

00:24:25,360 --> 00:24:27,747

Marc Preston: But when they see you, do they have, do

711

00:24:27,768 --> 00:24:29,321

Marc Preston: they register you as like, oh, that's dad

712

00:24:29,361 --> 00:24:30,485

Marc Preston: doing the work thing, or do they?

713

00:24:31,066 --> 00:24:32,089

Marc Preston: we did Melissa McCarthy.

714

00:24:32,109 --> 00:24:34,365

Marc Preston: Did they watch that And do they get into it,

715

00:24:34,425 --> 00:24:35,389

Marc Preston: or do they just see dad?

716

00:24:35,760 --> 00:24:37,487

Marc Preston: Or you know what's the feedback you get

717

00:24:37,507 --> 00:24:38,109

Marc Preston: from your kids.

718

00:24:38,540 --> 00:24:41,949

Matt Walsh: I think they they like to see me in things,

719

00:24:42,009 --> 00:24:43,212

Matt Walsh: but I think it's just dad.

720

00:24:43,420 --> 00:24:46,647

Matt Walsh: But I think what tickles them or makes it

721

00:24:46,727 --> 00:24:50,122

Matt Walsh: more magical is when their friends go oh my

722

00:24:50,142 --> 00:24:52,272

Matt Walsh: God, like I'll pick up a kid and then the

723

00:24:52,312 --> 00:24:54,601

Matt Walsh: kid has just watched Life of the Party.

724

00:24:55,283 --> 00:24:58,851

Matt Walsh: So when other people see like oh my God,

725

00:24:58,871 --> 00:25:00,542

Matt Walsh: your dad's in that thing, i think that's

726

00:25:00,602 --> 00:25:02,148

Matt Walsh: cool for them somehow.

727

00:25:02,208 --> 00:25:02,770

Matt Walsh: You know what I mean.

728

00:25:02,840 --> 00:25:04,324

Matt Walsh: Like it's like.

729

00:25:04,464 --> 00:25:06,369

Matt Walsh: But if we're in the living room like they

730

00:25:06,510 --> 00:25:08,424

Matt Walsh: never I don't ask them to watch anything

731

00:25:08,484 --> 00:25:08,745

Matt Walsh: I'm in.

732

00:25:09,280 --> 00:25:10,806

Matt Walsh: They're never interested in watching

733

00:25:10,866 --> 00:25:12,843

Matt Walsh: anything I'm in And I occasionally, you

734

00:25:12,863 --> 00:25:15,170

Matt Walsh: know, because I write and produce I've

735

00:25:15,230 --> 00:25:17,085

Matt Walsh: plugged them into things because it's all

736

00:25:17,265 --> 00:25:18,830

Matt Walsh: you know, low budget often.

737

00:25:18,980 --> 00:25:21,566

Matt Walsh: So why don't you go be a kid in this movie

738

00:25:21,586 --> 00:25:22,729

Matt Walsh: I'm making or whatever?

739

00:25:23,371 --> 00:25:24,032

Announcer: But they're not.

740

00:25:24,220 --> 00:25:24,662

Announcer: That's fun.

741

00:25:24,862 --> 00:25:26,007

Announcer: It is fun, i agree.

742

00:25:26,067 --> 00:25:26,268

Matt Walsh: Yeah.

743

00:25:27,781 --> 00:25:29,329

Marc Preston: You get to that point where with your kid,

744

00:25:29,470 --> 00:25:31,681

Marc Preston: with my kids it's not that they don't think

745

00:25:31,721 --> 00:25:32,063

Marc Preston: it's cool.

746

00:25:32,083 --> 00:25:33,768

Marc Preston: I think that they grew up having me having

747

00:25:33,788 --> 00:25:35,966

Marc Preston: a recording studio here and they know, they

748

00:25:36,006 --> 00:25:36,649

Marc Preston: know my deal.

749

00:25:36,820 --> 00:25:37,262

Matt Walsh: Yeah.

750

00:25:37,664 --> 00:25:39,150

Marc Preston: But when their friends say, oh, i heard

751

00:25:39,170 --> 00:25:41,802

Marc Preston: your dad or my, my, my couple of my son's

752

00:25:41,842 --> 00:25:42,886

Marc Preston: friends like, yeah, i'm listening to dad's

753

00:25:42,926 --> 00:25:44,744

Marc Preston: podcast, i swear to God, my, my daughter,

754

00:25:44,804 --> 00:25:47,150

Marc Preston: who is my youngest, actually is she does

755

00:25:47,210 --> 00:25:49,265

Marc Preston: the voice of the podcast the opening and

756

00:25:49,305 --> 00:25:49,687

Marc Preston: closing.

757

00:25:49,860 --> 00:25:50,946

Marc Preston: She's never heard an episode.

758

00:25:51,501 --> 00:25:53,113

Marc Preston: I had Neil deGrasse Tyson on in here and

759

00:25:53,134 --> 00:25:54,221

Marc Preston: she was like, do you want to come say hi to

760

00:25:54,241 --> 00:25:54,322

Marc Preston: him?

761

00:25:54,342 --> 00:25:57,446

Marc Preston: She's like nah, so it's kind of hard to get

762

00:25:57,486 --> 00:25:57,627

Marc Preston: her.

763

00:25:57,880 --> 00:25:59,266

Marc Preston: I was like you like his show?

764

00:25:59,320 --> 00:26:00,264

Marc Preston: She's like you want to come meet him, are

765

00:26:00,305 --> 00:26:00,546

Marc Preston: you sure?

766

00:26:01,061 --> 00:26:04,150

Marc Preston: Nah, you know, so it's nothing impresses my

767

00:26:04,210 --> 00:26:04,471

Marc Preston: kids.

768

00:26:04,520 --> 00:26:07,688

Marc Preston: She's, but she's, you know she is pretty

769

00:26:07,728 --> 00:26:09,112

Marc Preston: hip to what's going on.

770

00:26:09,762 --> 00:26:11,286

Marc Preston: I need to hire her as a producer and do

771

00:26:11,306 --> 00:26:13,401

Marc Preston: research for me, because she's way sharper

772

00:26:13,422 --> 00:26:14,807

Marc Preston: at picking up on stuff quickly.

773

00:26:14,980 --> 00:26:16,986

Matt Walsh: But I bet it was slightly more interesting

774

00:26:17,086 --> 00:26:20,143

Matt Walsh: when her friend said oh, I heard your dad's

775

00:26:20,183 --> 00:26:20,746

Matt Walsh: podcast.

776

00:26:21,380 --> 00:26:23,407

Matt Walsh: It sort of validates you in a way that she

777

00:26:23,447 --> 00:26:24,663

Matt Walsh: doesn't see you, Right?

778

00:26:25,246 --> 00:26:26,123

Marc Preston: Yeah, well, i told him.

779

00:26:26,163 --> 00:26:27,790

Marc Preston: I said dad used to be cool at one point in

780

00:26:27,830 --> 00:26:28,011

Marc Preston: time.

781

00:26:28,360 --> 00:26:29,305

Marc Preston: I mean I was one.

782

00:26:29,740 --> 00:26:31,728

Marc Preston: I used to be used to have a syndicated show.

783

00:26:31,820 --> 00:26:33,004

Marc Preston: And the only thing they remember when I

784

00:26:33,024 --> 00:26:35,322

Marc Preston: worked at ABC radio network is the security

785

00:26:35,382 --> 00:26:36,626

Marc Preston: guard when they were very little.

786

00:26:36,867 --> 00:26:38,121

Marc Preston: He would always bring them really cool

787

00:26:38,181 --> 00:26:40,262

Marc Preston: colored coloring books And they remember

788

00:26:40,282 --> 00:26:41,426

Marc Preston: the lobby because we had like a little

789

00:26:41,486 --> 00:26:42,801

Marc Preston: creek in the lobby or something.

790

00:26:42,861 --> 00:26:45,208

Marc Preston: And but they don't remember, like you know,

791

00:26:46,050 --> 00:26:47,523

Marc Preston: when, like you or I grew up being on the

792

00:26:47,564 --> 00:26:49,109

Marc Preston: radio, like the loop in Chicago.

793

00:26:49,300 --> 00:26:49,843

Announcer: Yeah.

794

00:26:49,923 --> 00:26:51,001

Matt Walsh: Sister stations Yeah.

795

00:26:51,582 --> 00:26:56,271

Marc Preston: And I was working in a station in Dallas,

796

00:26:56,332 --> 00:26:58,644

Marc Preston: at top 40 station, And our sister was

797

00:26:58,704 --> 00:26:59,862

Marc Preston: stationed as a loop It's like you hear

798

00:26:59,882 --> 00:27:00,042

Marc Preston: about.

799

00:27:00,062 --> 00:27:01,748

Marc Preston: it is almost this mystical, like, ooh, the

800

00:27:01,828 --> 00:27:05,188

Marc Preston: loop in Chicago, you know, and what radio

801

00:27:05,248 --> 00:27:05,489

Marc Preston: was.

802

00:27:05,549 --> 00:27:07,702

Marc Preston: now it's not like that anymore And I think

803

00:27:07,742 --> 00:27:09,988

Marc Preston: that, well, podcasts can have that DNA of

804

00:27:10,028 --> 00:27:10,730

Marc Preston: what radio was.

805

00:27:10,830 --> 00:27:12,946

Marc Preston: but you got a podcast too as well, don't

806

00:27:12,986 --> 00:27:13,066

Marc Preston: you?

807

00:27:13,800 --> 00:27:15,006

Marc Preston: Oh, nice transition.

808

00:27:15,561 --> 00:27:17,967

Matt Walsh: Uh, I have totally unintentional, by the

809

00:27:17,987 --> 00:27:19,932

Matt Walsh: way, I just got just my memory the way it

810

00:27:19,952 --> 00:27:23,447

Matt Walsh: works Um the uh podcast is called second in

811

00:27:23,487 --> 00:27:25,960

Matt Walsh: command and me and Tim Simons, uh, both of

812

00:27:26,020 --> 00:27:27,605

Matt Walsh: us were in a show called Veep and we're

813

00:27:27,645 --> 00:27:30,160

Matt Walsh: going through, we've committed to going

814

00:27:30,180 --> 00:27:32,566

Matt Walsh: through every episode of the seven seasons,

815

00:27:33,208 --> 00:27:35,601

Matt Walsh: uh, and bringing on people you know Julia,

816

00:27:35,682 --> 00:27:39,210

Matt Walsh: sam Richardson, all the actors, uh to talk

817

00:27:39,230 --> 00:27:40,052

Matt Walsh: about each episode.

818

00:27:40,180 --> 00:27:41,580

Matt Walsh: So it's called second in command, yeah.

819

00:27:41,861 --> 00:27:44,447

Marc Preston: I will admittedly say that that is one

820

00:27:44,528 --> 00:27:46,842

Marc Preston: series I haven't yet seen, but there's so

821

00:27:46,882 --> 00:27:47,826

Marc Preston: much stuff I haven't seen.

822

00:27:48,361 --> 00:27:50,529

Marc Preston: Um, there's a few things I haven't seen.

823

00:27:50,620 --> 00:27:51,784

Marc Preston: I'm kind of glad because I'm going to sit

824

00:27:51,845 --> 00:27:53,461

Marc Preston: down and, just, like power, watch it, just

825

00:27:53,802 --> 00:27:56,188

Marc Preston: with just the ebb and flow of how much

826

00:27:56,228 --> 00:27:57,371

Marc Preston: content's out there and what I.

827

00:27:57,580 --> 00:27:59,307

Marc Preston: you know what I'm watching for this show

828

00:27:59,420 --> 00:28:01,746

Marc Preston: And I was like but I want to watch Veep and

829

00:28:01,786 --> 00:28:03,309

Marc Preston: I have never seen Game of Thrones.

830

00:28:03,570 --> 00:28:03,911

Matt Walsh: Oh, my God.

831

00:28:03,931 --> 00:28:04,753

Matt Walsh: So there's a whole thing.

832

00:28:05,240 --> 00:28:06,481

Marc Preston: I know I'm one of those people I haven't

833

00:28:06,501 --> 00:28:09,149

Marc Preston: said I watched lost literally the last

834

00:28:09,189 --> 00:28:09,470

Marc Preston: season.

835

00:28:09,490 --> 00:28:09,951

Marc Preston: It was on the air.

836

00:28:10,020 --> 00:28:12,126

Marc Preston: I started watching and catching up and I'm

837

00:28:12,146 --> 00:28:13,208

Marc Preston: like why did I miss this?

838

00:28:13,329 --> 00:28:13,630

Marc Preston: You know.

839

00:28:13,990 --> 00:28:16,527

Matt Walsh: Yeah, well, you have two good shows.

840

00:28:17,360 --> 00:28:19,208

Matt Walsh: Uh, i'm envious, and not just cause I'm on

841

00:28:19,228 --> 00:28:19,288

Matt Walsh: it.

842

00:28:19,400 --> 00:28:20,984

Matt Walsh: Veep is a wonderful show and Game of

843

00:28:21,004 --> 00:28:23,752

Matt Walsh: Thrones is one of the best shows ever.

844

00:28:24,162 --> 00:28:26,837

Marc Preston: It's it's epic, so I think you're going to

845

00:28:26,858 --> 00:28:28,605

Marc Preston: like them There's so many things that I

846

00:28:28,645 --> 00:28:30,290

Marc Preston: just there's so much stuff out there and

847

00:28:30,640 --> 00:28:32,583

Marc Preston: equality stuff And, like I, just the other

848

00:28:32,603 --> 00:28:35,451

Marc Preston: day I was watching um Tulsa King on on

849

00:28:35,520 --> 00:28:38,369

Marc Preston: Paramount and uh, with Stallone and he's

850

00:28:38,409 --> 00:28:39,191

Marc Preston: got a reality show.

851

00:28:39,240 --> 00:28:40,263

Marc Preston: I'm going, you know Stallone doesn't need

852

00:28:40,284 --> 00:28:42,281

Marc Preston: to do a reality or unscripted show, but I

853

00:28:42,341 --> 00:28:43,504

Marc Preston: have to watch this now.

854

00:28:43,986 --> 00:28:44,888

Matt Walsh: He has a reality.

855

00:28:45,350 --> 00:28:47,564

Marc Preston: Really He and his three daughters and his

856

00:28:47,624 --> 00:28:49,850

Marc Preston: wife and it's it's uh, it's all in

857

00:28:49,890 --> 00:28:50,511

Marc Preston: Paramount plus.

858

00:28:50,712 --> 00:28:52,305

Marc Preston: Really I was like I had to watch it.

859

00:28:52,821 --> 00:28:54,680

Marc Preston: He had one of the best pieces of advice I

860

00:28:54,901 --> 00:28:56,206

Marc Preston: he was talking with his daughter doing a

861

00:28:56,246 --> 00:28:57,640

Marc Preston: long distance relationship, and it's

862

00:28:57,681 --> 00:28:59,620

Marc Preston: something I teach voiceover also, and I

863

00:28:59,661 --> 00:29:01,506

Marc Preston: teach my students the value of investing

864

00:29:01,546 --> 00:29:03,091

Marc Preston: their time properly.

865

00:29:03,180 --> 00:29:04,304

Marc Preston: You may not have a lot of money, but you

866

00:29:04,324 --> 00:29:06,430

Marc Preston: can be careful about how you invest your

867

00:29:06,470 --> 00:29:07,904

Marc Preston: time And he talked about your time bank and

868

00:29:07,924 --> 00:29:10,000

Marc Preston: the way you invest from your time bank And

869

00:29:10,020 --> 00:29:11,768

Marc Preston: like I am stealing that from Stallone.

870

00:29:13,364 --> 00:29:14,266

Announcer: You know, he's one of those guys.

871

00:29:14,286 --> 00:29:14,728

Marc Preston: That's just.

872

00:29:14,988 --> 00:29:17,103

Marc Preston: He cracked the code on just having a great

873

00:29:17,183 --> 00:29:17,961

Marc Preston: attitude, and you know.

874

00:29:18,082 --> 00:29:19,487

Marc Preston: But anyway, he doesn't need to do it, but

875

00:29:19,507 --> 00:29:20,923

Marc Preston: it was kind of fun to watch, you know.

876

00:29:21,024 --> 00:29:23,134

Marc Preston: And uh, and you mentioned Sam Richardson.

877

00:29:23,174 --> 00:29:24,827

Marc Preston: He's one of those guys that you know when

878

00:29:24,848 --> 00:29:26,215

Marc Preston: you see him shop, you're very much the same

879

00:29:26,235 --> 00:29:26,356

Marc Preston: way.

880

00:29:26,376 --> 00:29:26,919

Marc Preston: You see him shop.

881

00:29:26,939 --> 00:29:28,404

Marc Preston: Okay, this is going to be a funny scene

882

00:29:28,484 --> 00:29:30,210

Marc Preston: like Ted, just you and your.

883

00:29:30,270 --> 00:29:31,755

Marc Preston: You know you and that relationship to Tom

884

00:29:31,796 --> 00:29:32,039

Marc Preston: Scare.

885

00:29:32,120 --> 00:29:33,567

Marc Preston: It just the most random thing.

886

00:29:33,620 --> 00:29:35,548

Marc Preston: It was just your, your fun to watch.

887

00:29:35,720 --> 00:29:37,648

Marc Preston: You know Sam Richardson the same way.

888

00:29:38,081 --> 00:29:39,648

Marc Preston: Uh, yeah, a lot of talent there.

889

00:29:39,921 --> 00:29:41,987

Marc Preston: And, and I don't know how I missed VEEP,

890

00:29:42,287 --> 00:29:43,210

Marc Preston: but it's one of those things.

891

00:29:43,250 --> 00:29:43,651

Marc Preston: I've got it.

892

00:29:44,000 --> 00:29:45,681

Marc Preston: I've got a lot of stuff queued up And then,

893

00:29:45,761 --> 00:29:47,888

Marc Preston: whenever the kids aren't here though, i'm

894

00:29:47,908 --> 00:29:49,803

Marc Preston: just sitting on my laptop, working power,

895

00:29:49,844 --> 00:29:50,868

Marc Preston: watching all these shows.

896

00:29:50,960 --> 00:29:51,221

Marc Preston: I can't.

897

00:29:51,261 --> 00:29:52,546

Marc Preston: I mean, it's almost embarrassing how many

898

00:29:52,586 --> 00:29:53,669

Marc Preston: things I haven't seen yet.

899

00:29:53,880 --> 00:29:55,487

Matt Walsh: So yeah, i tend to catch up.

900

00:29:55,920 --> 00:29:58,889

Matt Walsh: Well, yeah, i tend to catch up on uh TV,

901

00:29:58,969 --> 00:29:59,631

Matt Walsh: like yourself.

902

00:30:00,120 --> 00:30:03,289

Matt Walsh: Uh, i have huge gaps or I'm culturally

903

00:30:03,369 --> 00:30:05,504

Matt Walsh: irrelevant on shows Like I haven't seen

904

00:30:05,544 --> 00:30:06,581

Matt Walsh: Tulsa King It's.

905

00:30:06,681 --> 00:30:10,070

Matt Walsh: I'm never on top of what's uh important to

906

00:30:10,110 --> 00:30:12,927

Matt Walsh: watch, let's say Um, but when I'm out of

907

00:30:12,987 --> 00:30:15,898

Matt Walsh: town working on a show or a project, that's

908

00:30:15,939 --> 00:30:18,587

Matt Walsh: when I get to like finish shows that have

909

00:30:18,607 --> 00:30:20,503

Matt Walsh: been meaning to watch And cause, if I'm

910

00:30:20,543 --> 00:30:22,429

Matt Walsh: home, i'm driving children around,

911

00:30:22,589 --> 00:30:23,011

Matt Walsh: seemingly.

912

00:30:23,261 --> 00:30:24,945

Marc Preston: When you were growing up, what was it that

913

00:30:25,005 --> 00:30:26,007

Marc Preston: you were consuming?

914

00:30:26,088 --> 00:30:28,768

Marc Preston: either comedy wise or I loved with my

915

00:30:28,809 --> 00:30:29,840

Marc Preston: parents, went out Saturday night.

916

00:30:29,920 --> 00:30:31,429

Marc Preston: I had a babysitter who would let me watch

917

00:30:31,469 --> 00:30:32,293

Marc Preston: Saturday night live.

918

00:30:32,575 --> 00:30:34,422

Marc Preston: You know, that's awesome, um, but that was

919

00:30:34,442 --> 00:30:35,003

Marc Preston: when I was a kid.

920

00:30:35,043 --> 00:30:37,529

Marc Preston: It was the you know Billy Crystal.

921

00:30:38,270 --> 00:30:40,684

Marc Preston: Uh, eddie Murphy, you know, in that kind of

922

00:30:40,725 --> 00:30:41,488

Marc Preston: I'm a little younger than you.

923

00:30:41,701 --> 00:30:43,180

Marc Preston: So that was kind of my thing.

924

00:30:43,240 --> 00:30:44,862

Marc Preston: But I remember the old school Like what was

925

00:30:44,902 --> 00:30:45,725

Marc Preston: your entertainment?

926

00:30:45,865 --> 00:30:46,949

Marc Preston: uh, diet, like back then.

927

00:30:47,040 --> 00:30:48,965

Matt Walsh: Yeah, i think the things that excited me,

928

00:30:49,126 --> 00:30:51,112

Matt Walsh: you know, obviously network TV, i, i, i

929

00:30:51,200 --> 00:30:52,985

Matt Walsh: watched probably everything that you did on

930

00:30:53,045 --> 00:30:57,003

Matt Walsh: network TV but like SNL was a big thing, uh,

931

00:30:57,124 --> 00:31:02,405

Matt Walsh: sec, uh, second city TV Python Uh, i was a

932

00:31:02,445 --> 00:31:02,726

Matt Walsh: big fan.

933

00:31:02,880 --> 00:31:04,246

Marc Preston: Do you remember something that just popped

934

00:31:04,286 --> 00:31:04,708

Marc Preston: into my head?

935

00:31:05,380 --> 00:31:06,463

Marc Preston: Do you remember something called not

936

00:31:06,503 --> 00:31:07,966

Marc Preston: necessarily the news, do you?

937

00:31:07,986 --> 00:31:08,327

Matt Walsh: remember that.

938

00:31:08,347 --> 00:31:09,349

Matt Walsh: Yeah, that was a brief.

939

00:31:09,389 --> 00:31:10,772

Matt Walsh: Yeah, i do remember that.

940

00:31:10,832 --> 00:31:11,842

Matt Walsh: Yeah, that was on.

941

00:31:12,444 --> 00:31:14,762

Marc Preston: I do remember that one And the Canadian

942

00:31:14,802 --> 00:31:15,283

Marc Preston: stuff come out.

943

00:31:15,384 --> 00:31:18,011

Marc Preston: You know kids in the hall it was like what

944

00:31:18,171 --> 00:31:18,512

Marc Preston: is this?

945

00:31:18,680 --> 00:31:20,485

Marc Preston: I don't get this kind of sense of humor

946

00:31:20,525 --> 00:31:20,806

Marc Preston: thing.

947

00:31:20,826 --> 00:31:22,571

Marc Preston: You know the uh, but it was.

948

00:31:22,591 --> 00:31:24,647

Marc Preston: It was magnetic for me because it was so

949

00:31:24,727 --> 00:31:25,068

Marc Preston: different.

950

00:31:25,160 --> 00:31:27,746

Matt Walsh: And then I got into Carlin uh, because you

951

00:31:27,787 --> 00:31:29,631

Matt Walsh: know, I just kind of start following him

952

00:31:29,671 --> 00:31:31,185

Matt Walsh: and Robin Williams, so who were, like how

953

00:31:31,205 --> 00:31:32,512

Matt Walsh: the let's say, you're, you're Mount

954

00:31:32,552 --> 00:31:35,303

Matt Walsh: Rushmore comedians, uh, or comedic actors,

955

00:31:35,323 --> 00:31:37,088

Matt Walsh: when you, when you were coming up, that you

956

00:31:37,750 --> 00:31:39,244

Matt Walsh: followed, and I'm not saying to emulate,

957

00:31:39,284 --> 00:31:41,321

Matt Walsh: but this kind of turned yawn Well, as far

958

00:31:41,361 --> 00:31:44,309

Matt Walsh: as sketch, like kids in the hall were doing

959

00:31:44,409 --> 00:31:46,302

Matt Walsh: exactly what I wanted to be doing, like

960

00:31:46,322 --> 00:31:48,728

Matt Walsh: they had a group of friends and they had a

961

00:31:48,809 --> 00:31:50,642

Matt Walsh: signature voice and they were doing it

962

00:31:50,682 --> 00:31:53,501

Matt Walsh: their own way and they had an identity, so

963

00:31:53,541 --> 00:31:56,069

Matt Walsh: they really uh captured me as a young man.

964

00:31:57,041 --> 00:31:58,767

Matt Walsh: Uh, i thought they were the ideal in many

965

00:31:58,807 --> 00:31:59,048

Matt Walsh: ways.

966

00:31:59,160 --> 00:32:02,347

Matt Walsh: And then, like you know, people who were

967

00:32:02,387 --> 00:32:04,653

Matt Walsh: hilarious, you know I love Robin Williams,

968

00:32:04,920 --> 00:32:08,187

Matt Walsh: uh, i think I was saying earlier, i as a

969

00:32:08,405 --> 00:32:10,365

Matt Walsh: younger person, probably cause my dad liked

970

00:32:10,406 --> 00:32:10,586

Matt Walsh: him too.

971

00:32:10,700 --> 00:32:13,709

Matt Walsh: Peter Sellers was somebody I was like so

972

00:32:13,989 --> 00:32:16,905

Matt Walsh: impressed with And you know, i think I had

973

00:32:16,945 --> 00:32:19,250

Matt Walsh: like a a Woody Allen phase where I was like

974

00:32:20,212 --> 00:32:23,590

Matt Walsh: sort of you know, uh, obviously just deep

975

00:32:23,630 --> 00:32:25,799

Matt Walsh: into Woody Allen or trying to see

976

00:32:25,859 --> 00:32:28,747

Matt Walsh: everything he'd ever made, and then, uh,

977

00:32:29,389 --> 00:32:30,471

Matt Walsh: yeah, those are the, those are the ones

978

00:32:30,491 --> 00:32:31,905

Matt Walsh: that come out and they like standups.

979

00:32:33,620 --> 00:32:35,466

Matt Walsh: There was a lot of standup when I got out

980

00:32:35,506 --> 00:32:36,188

Matt Walsh: of college.

981

00:32:36,228 --> 00:32:38,144

Matt Walsh: A lot of the standups I liked were the guys

982

00:32:38,184 --> 00:32:41,237

Matt Walsh: in the clubs that were just, you know,

983

00:32:41,478 --> 00:32:42,663

Matt Walsh: getting going themselves.

984

00:32:42,743 --> 00:32:45,718

Matt Walsh: It was like this boom of standup happening

985

00:32:45,798 --> 00:32:46,160

Matt Walsh: everywhere.

986

00:32:46,320 --> 00:32:48,226

Matt Walsh: So I, a lot of the people I liked I was

987

00:32:48,246 --> 00:32:50,352

Matt Walsh: seeing live that hadn't broke yet.

988

00:32:50,641 --> 00:32:52,840

Marc Preston: Now, was this, uh, was this in Chicago?

989

00:32:52,840 --> 00:32:53,663

Marc Preston: Are you talking about where, like when you

990

00:32:53,683 --> 00:32:54,768

Marc Preston: were in New York, chicago?

991

00:32:54,881 --> 00:32:55,920

Matt Walsh: No, this is in Chicago.

992

00:32:55,980 --> 00:32:58,709

Matt Walsh: There were guys like, uh, you know this guy,

993

00:32:58,749 --> 00:33:00,033

Matt Walsh: jimmy Pardo?

994

00:33:00,053 --> 00:33:02,842

Matt Walsh: uh, some of these people don't do it

995

00:33:02,902 --> 00:33:05,729

Matt Walsh: anymore, but there was like, uh, brian

996

00:33:05,749 --> 00:33:08,192

Matt Walsh: McCann, who became a writer for Conan and

997

00:33:08,232 --> 00:33:09,040

Matt Walsh: various things.

998

00:33:09,160 --> 00:33:11,088

Matt Walsh: He was a great, funny guy.

999

00:33:13,166 --> 00:33:14,710

Matt Walsh: Uh, what's the other guys?

Speaker:

00:33:14,841 --> 00:33:16,858

Matt Walsh: I'll think of his name, but he's really

Speaker:

00:33:16,879 --> 00:33:18,004

Matt Walsh: fine, he's still in Chicago.

Speaker:

00:33:18,586 --> 00:33:20,265

Marc Preston: Anyways, Now you're talking about SNL.

Speaker:

00:33:20,660 --> 00:33:22,566

Marc Preston: Uh, did you by chance do any work with SNL?

Speaker:

00:33:22,646 --> 00:33:24,692

Marc Preston: or did you do any writing ever, Or did you

Speaker:

00:33:24,881 --> 00:33:24,941

Marc Preston: I?

Speaker:

00:33:25,022 --> 00:33:27,680

Matt Walsh: did some short films.

Speaker:

00:33:27,820 --> 00:33:29,687

Matt Walsh: They do those like commercials or weird

Speaker:

00:33:29,727 --> 00:33:30,430

Matt Walsh: short films, Yeah.

Speaker:

00:33:30,841 --> 00:33:34,534

Matt Walsh: So when I landed in New York, uh, a couple

Speaker:

00:33:34,554 --> 00:33:36,823

Matt Walsh: of my buddies were writers on that show so

Speaker:

00:33:36,883 --> 00:33:39,513

Matt Walsh: they were often suggesting me for like

Speaker:

00:33:39,734 --> 00:33:41,420

Matt Walsh: weird films that they had written.

Speaker:

00:33:41,580 --> 00:33:44,661

Matt Walsh: So I appeared in SNL probably a couple of

Speaker:

00:33:44,701 --> 00:33:47,603

Matt Walsh: times in like weird commercials or weird

Speaker:

00:33:47,663 --> 00:33:48,303

Matt Walsh: short films.

Speaker:

00:33:55,632 --> 00:33:56,796

Marc Preston: As you came out to LA.

Speaker:

00:33:58,099 --> 00:33:59,623

Marc Preston: that's really the genesis in kind, of when

Speaker:

00:33:59,643 --> 00:34:01,049

Marc Preston: you started kicking off doing stuff on

Speaker:

00:34:01,089 --> 00:34:03,130

Marc Preston: camera, I mean, what was, what were some of

Speaker:

00:34:03,150 --> 00:34:04,153

Marc Preston: the first things you were working on?

Speaker:

00:34:04,685 --> 00:34:06,913

Marc Preston: How do you feel like what was the momentum

Speaker:

00:34:06,933 --> 00:34:07,174

Marc Preston: builder?

Speaker:

00:34:07,325 --> 00:34:08,631

Marc Preston: What really kind of kicked things off for

Speaker:

00:34:08,671 --> 00:34:08,751

Marc Preston: you?

Speaker:

00:34:08,905 --> 00:34:14,817

Matt Walsh: I think for me, like New York, getting my

Speaker:

00:34:14,877 --> 00:34:18,845

Matt Walsh: feet on the ground and starting UCB we were

Speaker:

00:34:18,925 --> 00:34:20,572

Matt Walsh: kind of known in New York in the comedy

Speaker:

00:34:20,632 --> 00:34:22,531

Matt Walsh: scene And then being on the Daily Show was

Speaker:

00:34:22,592 --> 00:34:25,644

Matt Walsh: really for me a moment of feeling like I'd

Speaker:

00:34:25,665 --> 00:34:28,655

Matt Walsh: been launched or people knew me because

Speaker:

00:34:28,875 --> 00:34:31,364

Matt Walsh: they knew your name now and I wasn't just

Speaker:

00:34:31,424 --> 00:34:32,127

Matt Walsh: in a sketch group.

Speaker:

00:34:32,905 --> 00:34:37,418

Matt Walsh: And then I think landing in LA was I was on

Speaker:

00:34:37,439 --> 00:34:39,585

Matt Walsh: a show called Dogbite's Man and then I

Speaker:

00:34:39,725 --> 00:34:43,313

Matt Walsh: started popping up in movies like Road Trip

Speaker:

00:34:43,573 --> 00:34:45,017

Matt Walsh: or Old School.

Speaker:

00:34:45,925 --> 00:34:49,112

Matt Walsh: So those were kind of like moments that I

Speaker:

00:34:49,192 --> 00:34:51,097

Matt Walsh: felt like propelled me perhaps.

Speaker:

00:34:52,167 --> 00:34:54,357

Marc Preston: You had Comedy Central was sort of like I

Speaker:

00:34:54,398 --> 00:34:55,704

Marc Preston: mean, considering the talent you were

Speaker:

00:34:55,724 --> 00:34:57,050

Marc Preston: working with, yeah, that's good springboard,

Speaker:

00:34:57,628 --> 00:34:59,099

Marc Preston: but were you, were you really kind of

Speaker:

00:34:59,119 --> 00:34:59,845

Marc Preston: getting invigorated?

Speaker:

00:35:00,207 --> 00:35:01,725

Marc Preston: I mean you had a lot of energy for it, like,

Speaker:

00:35:01,745 --> 00:35:03,805

Marc Preston: was that like, okay, this is my thing, i'm

Speaker:

00:35:03,825 --> 00:35:05,049

Marc Preston: going to be doing comedy movies.

Speaker:

00:35:07,546 --> 00:35:11,537

Matt Walsh: I think I always felt like maybe similar to

Speaker:

00:35:11,597 --> 00:35:15,454

Matt Walsh: you, Like I was happy if I was creating and

Speaker:

00:35:15,514 --> 00:35:17,700

Matt Walsh: performing comedy and I didn't know

Speaker:

00:35:18,582 --> 00:35:21,109

Matt Walsh: necessarily like what's the steps to like

Speaker:

00:35:21,971 --> 00:35:23,825

Matt Walsh: you know, like getting another movie, I

Speaker:

00:35:23,865 --> 00:35:26,371

Matt Walsh: would just keep working at it, keep doing

Speaker:

00:35:26,411 --> 00:35:26,752

Matt Walsh: things.

Speaker:

00:35:29,525 --> 00:35:30,891

Matt Walsh: That's probably not a good interview, Marc.

Speaker:

00:35:30,985 --> 00:35:31,869

Matt Walsh: I don't have a good answer.

Speaker:

00:35:33,608 --> 00:35:33,969

Marc Preston: No, no, no.

Speaker:

00:35:34,209 --> 00:35:37,116

Marc Preston: I see the thing is it's everybody has

Speaker:

00:35:37,176 --> 00:35:38,930

Marc Preston: different path, and that's what fascinates

Speaker:

00:35:38,970 --> 00:35:41,362

Marc Preston: me is how somebody finds their way in and

Speaker:

00:35:41,383 --> 00:35:42,787

Marc Preston: then they make some friends and that you

Speaker:

00:35:42,828 --> 00:35:45,655

Marc Preston: start like just finding yourself in

Speaker:

00:35:45,675 --> 00:35:47,688

Marc Preston: different situations, like, yeah, i'm an

Speaker:

00:35:47,768 --> 00:35:49,653

Marc Preston: improviser, like truly, one of the biggest

Speaker:

00:35:49,674 --> 00:35:50,897

Marc Preston: skills I learned was improv.

Speaker:

00:35:50,985 --> 00:35:52,852

Matt Walsh: I studied improv in Chicago.

Speaker:

00:35:53,125 --> 00:35:54,029

Matt Walsh: I studied, you know.

Speaker:

00:35:54,069 --> 00:35:56,209

Matt Walsh: I taught it in New York, i taught it in LA.

Speaker:

00:35:56,905 --> 00:35:59,530

Matt Walsh: I have my 10,000 hours on stage doing

Speaker:

00:36:00,392 --> 00:36:01,193

Matt Walsh: improv, you know.

Speaker:

00:36:01,234 --> 00:36:05,047

Matt Walsh: so that's probably one of my skills And I

Speaker:

00:36:05,088 --> 00:36:06,952

Matt Walsh: probably approach life that way too much

Speaker:

00:36:06,972 --> 00:36:08,756

Matt Walsh: where I don't have a plan, but that's the

Speaker:

00:36:08,796 --> 00:36:09,277

Matt Walsh: truth of it.

Speaker:

00:36:09,605 --> 00:36:12,913

Matt Walsh: So, inside comedy and inside acting, that's

Speaker:

00:36:12,953 --> 00:36:14,957

Matt Walsh: a great skill to have because you teach.

Speaker:

00:36:15,325 --> 00:36:15,727

Marc Preston: Well being.

Speaker:

00:36:15,767 --> 00:36:18,018

Marc Preston: The ability to adapt keeps you, gives you a

Speaker:

00:36:18,078 --> 00:36:19,766

Marc Preston: career with longevity, and you've gotten

Speaker:

00:36:19,827 --> 00:36:20,048

Marc Preston: that.

Speaker:

00:36:20,269 --> 00:36:22,399

Marc Preston: Most certainly, you know, you've, you know.

Speaker:

00:36:22,479 --> 00:36:23,986

Marc Preston: Is there something you haven't done though

Speaker:

00:36:24,186 --> 00:36:25,530

Marc Preston: that you know, i think?

Speaker:

00:36:25,750 --> 00:36:26,412

Marc Preston: oh, it's drawn.

Speaker:

00:36:26,452 --> 00:36:27,635

Marc Preston: I'm drawing a blank on what it was.

Speaker:

00:36:28,265 --> 00:36:28,907

Marc Preston: It was a movie.

Speaker:

00:36:29,570 --> 00:36:30,553

Marc Preston: You were a storm chaser.

Speaker:

00:36:30,885 --> 00:36:33,113

Matt Walsh: Yes, i did a movie called Into the Storm.

Speaker:

00:36:33,265 --> 00:36:33,526

Matt Walsh: It was.

Speaker:

00:36:34,909 --> 00:36:36,974

Matt Walsh: I think it's the third best tornado movie

Speaker:

00:36:37,034 --> 00:36:42,646

Matt Walsh: ever, but but yeah, it was a blast Action.

Speaker:

00:36:42,726 --> 00:36:44,211

Matt Walsh: I would love to do another action movie.

Speaker:

00:36:44,231 --> 00:36:44,913

Matt Walsh: That was action.

Speaker:

00:36:45,365 --> 00:36:47,850

Matt Walsh: That was like driving crazy vehicles,

Speaker:

00:36:47,991 --> 00:36:50,636

Matt Walsh: running through fire, getting soaked in

Speaker:

00:36:50,697 --> 00:36:53,626

Matt Walsh: rain, you know, explosions, all of that It

Speaker:

00:36:53,726 --> 00:36:54,027

Matt Walsh: was.

Speaker:

00:36:54,850 --> 00:36:56,495

Matt Walsh: it was really fun and really challenging.

Speaker:

00:36:56,725 --> 00:36:59,033

Matt Walsh: So I would love to do another action movie.

Speaker:

00:36:59,365 --> 00:37:00,428

Marc Preston: Is there something you're wanting to do

Speaker:

00:37:00,468 --> 00:37:01,572

Marc Preston: that just hasn't shown up?

Speaker:

00:37:01,712 --> 00:37:03,286

Marc Preston: as far as your agent hasn't handed you the

Speaker:

00:37:03,306 --> 00:37:05,592

Marc Preston: script just yet, you know that you would

Speaker:

00:37:05,612 --> 00:37:06,935

Marc Preston: like to do something you would like to do.

Speaker:

00:37:07,605 --> 00:37:10,955

Matt Walsh: Well, I think, like you talk about action,

Speaker:

00:37:11,222 --> 00:37:15,178

Matt Walsh: I think like an action comedy I think would

Speaker:

00:37:15,385 --> 00:37:16,129

Matt Walsh: be really fun.

Speaker:

00:37:16,905 --> 00:37:21,654

Matt Walsh: I think also like kind of like these are

Speaker:

00:37:21,694 --> 00:37:23,217

Matt Walsh: things I haven't done, but kind of like

Speaker:

00:37:23,337 --> 00:37:28,111

Matt Walsh: either an unraveling mystery or an

Speaker:

00:37:28,191 --> 00:37:30,776

Matt Walsh: unraveling sort of dramatic show, that sort

Speaker:

00:37:30,836 --> 00:37:33,568

Matt Walsh: of unfolds, if you will like that.

Speaker:

00:37:33,669 --> 00:37:34,853

Matt Walsh: That's very interesting to me.

Speaker:

00:37:34,925 --> 00:37:37,113

Matt Walsh: I haven't done those, those sort of things.

Speaker:

00:37:37,926 --> 00:37:39,770

Marc Preston: Well, we see a lot of guys with comedy

Speaker:

00:37:39,810 --> 00:37:42,396

Marc Preston: background that are stepping into doing

Speaker:

00:37:42,417 --> 00:37:43,086

Marc Preston: those kind of things.

Speaker:

00:37:43,186 --> 00:37:45,747

Marc Preston: You know it's pretty common, but you are, i

Speaker:

00:37:45,787 --> 00:37:47,171

Marc Preston: mean, without a doubt you're one of those

Speaker:

00:37:47,191 --> 00:37:49,846

Marc Preston: guys that's busy, you know, and that's in

Speaker:

00:37:49,866 --> 00:37:50,227

Marc Preston: Hollywood.

Speaker:

00:37:50,267 --> 00:37:51,812

Marc Preston: I guess that's a blessing, you know,

Speaker:

00:37:51,832 --> 00:37:52,855

Marc Preston: because you're always Yeah, i did.

Speaker:

00:37:53,445 --> 00:37:55,570

Matt Walsh: I did something like I'm grateful for all

Speaker:

00:37:55,590 --> 00:37:57,275

Matt Walsh: you know, all the things I've been able to

Speaker:

00:37:57,295 --> 00:37:57,716

Matt Walsh: get into.

Speaker:

00:37:58,205 --> 00:38:01,492

Matt Walsh: I did an Apple limited series about the

Speaker:

00:38:01,552 --> 00:38:03,537

Matt Walsh: assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the

Speaker:

00:38:03,577 --> 00:38:05,429

Matt Walsh: capturing of John Wilkes Booth last year

Speaker:

00:38:05,489 --> 00:38:09,430

Matt Walsh: down in Georgia And I played Dr Mudd who

Speaker:

00:38:09,611 --> 00:38:13,247

Matt Walsh: fixed John Wilkes Booth's ankle And it was

Speaker:

00:38:13,367 --> 00:38:15,353

Matt Walsh: completely a drama and it was a complete

Speaker:

00:38:15,413 --> 00:38:18,049

Matt Walsh: period piece And it was like heavy beers

Speaker:

00:38:18,129 --> 00:38:20,033

Matt Walsh: and sweaty clothing and Georgia in the

Speaker:

00:38:20,114 --> 00:38:23,068

Matt Walsh: summer and dim lighting And it was really

Speaker:

00:38:23,369 --> 00:38:24,566

Matt Walsh: challenging and good It was.

Speaker:

00:38:24,726 --> 00:38:26,091

Matt Walsh: It was a really neat experience.

Speaker:

00:38:26,805 --> 00:38:29,454

Marc Preston: So as far as the summer goes, kids out of

Speaker:

00:38:29,474 --> 00:38:32,023

Marc Preston: school, you planning any kind of family

Speaker:

00:38:32,043 --> 00:38:33,848

Marc Preston: vacation and they kind of get away a little

Speaker:

00:38:33,928 --> 00:38:35,932

Marc Preston: break from work, or you got stuff lined up

Speaker:

00:38:37,416 --> 00:38:38,578

Marc Preston: in the next couple of months here.

Speaker:

00:38:38,785 --> 00:38:42,194

Matt Walsh: Yeah, we have a plan to was just discussing

Speaker:

00:38:42,255 --> 00:38:42,896

Matt Walsh: it with my wife.

Speaker:

00:38:43,005 --> 00:38:44,409

Matt Walsh: We're going to get up to the Northwest.

Speaker:

00:38:44,429 --> 00:38:46,315

Matt Walsh: She's from the Northwest, i'm from Chicago,

Speaker:

00:38:46,565 --> 00:38:48,011

Matt Walsh: so we've gone to Chicago a fair amount.

Speaker:

00:38:48,245 --> 00:38:49,771

Matt Walsh: She's always like we don't get to Northwest

Speaker:

00:38:49,811 --> 00:38:50,052

Matt Walsh: enough.

Speaker:

00:38:50,205 --> 00:38:53,093

Matt Walsh: So we're going to go up to like her her mom

Speaker:

00:38:53,113 --> 00:38:54,737

Matt Walsh: is in Eugene and then we're going to go to

Speaker:

00:38:54,785 --> 00:38:56,666

Matt Walsh: the coast, see the Oregon coast, and we're

Speaker:

00:38:56,686 --> 00:38:59,315

Matt Walsh: going to try to get up to like Big Sur,

Speaker:

00:38:59,396 --> 00:39:02,045

Matt Walsh: which we've never done, and maybe Northern

Speaker:

00:39:02,145 --> 00:39:03,110

Matt Walsh: California coast.

Speaker:

00:39:03,205 --> 00:39:05,493

Matt Walsh: So that's the plan and that's exciting.

Speaker:

00:39:05,605 --> 00:39:08,551

Matt Walsh: We're probably going to rent a little mini

Speaker:

00:39:08,731 --> 00:39:12,498

Matt Walsh: camper and just maybe park on a couple

Speaker:

00:39:12,538 --> 00:39:14,629

Matt Walsh: beaches and get into nature.

Speaker:

00:39:15,111 --> 00:39:15,792

Marc Preston: That's exciting.

Speaker:

00:39:15,953 --> 00:39:16,755

Marc Preston: I would love that.

Speaker:

00:39:17,867 --> 00:39:19,091

Marc Preston: When I was younger I was really younger, my

Speaker:

00:39:19,131 --> 00:39:20,867

Marc Preston: kids were young I always thought getting a

Speaker:

00:39:20,887 --> 00:39:23,173

Marc Preston: like a big motor home doing like the go

Speaker:

00:39:23,213 --> 00:39:23,694

Marc Preston: full grisly.

Speaker:

00:39:23,714 --> 00:39:24,235

Matt Walsh: Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

00:39:26,194 --> 00:39:27,263

Marc Preston: I thought that would be a blast.

Speaker:

00:39:27,283 --> 00:39:29,592

Marc Preston: Yeah, now, as far as flame and hot, the new

Speaker:

00:39:29,632 --> 00:39:30,073

Marc Preston: project.

Speaker:

00:39:30,926 --> 00:39:33,105

Marc Preston: Now, how did that come across, eva?

Speaker:

00:39:33,767 --> 00:39:35,071

Matt Walsh: so Eva Longoria.

Speaker:

00:39:35,692 --> 00:39:37,919

Matt Walsh: I wrote a movie with a friend of mine

Speaker:

00:39:37,999 --> 00:39:41,149

Matt Walsh: called Unplugging and Eva signed on to do

Speaker:

00:39:41,269 --> 00:39:44,829

Matt Walsh: it And so me and her were co-stars in this

Speaker:

00:39:45,651 --> 00:39:49,779

Matt Walsh: story about a couple who agrees to no Wi-Fi,

Speaker:

00:39:49,819 --> 00:39:52,390

Matt Walsh: no phones, no cell service for a weekend to

Speaker:

00:39:52,410 --> 00:39:54,696

Matt Walsh: kind of rescue the marriage because they're

Speaker:

00:39:54,716 --> 00:39:56,306

Matt Walsh: having some problems And then the minute

Speaker:

00:39:56,326 --> 00:39:58,732

Matt Walsh: they put their screens down they start

Speaker:

00:39:58,752 --> 00:40:00,376

Matt Walsh: getting paranoid that the world's ending.

Speaker:

00:40:00,685 --> 00:40:02,469

Matt Walsh: So that was the story that I wrote with a

Speaker:

00:40:02,510 --> 00:40:05,825

Matt Walsh: buddy and she was great She's the best And

Speaker:

00:40:05,845 --> 00:40:07,654

Matt Walsh: we became friends making that movie playing

Speaker:

00:40:07,674 --> 00:40:08,437

Matt Walsh: a couple together.

Speaker:

00:40:08,518 --> 00:40:11,249

Matt Walsh: And she was directing a movie the next year

Speaker:

00:40:11,329 --> 00:40:14,901

Matt Walsh: and she asked me to come in and she said

Speaker:

00:40:14,921 --> 00:40:17,410

Matt Walsh: would you come into my movie and play an

Speaker:

00:40:17,510 --> 00:40:18,433

Matt Walsh: old white racist?

Speaker:

00:40:18,885 --> 00:40:20,029

Matt Walsh: And I said I'll play a.

Speaker:

00:40:20,110 --> 00:40:22,037

Matt Walsh: I said no, but I'll play a middle-aged

Speaker:

00:40:22,117 --> 00:40:22,679

Matt Walsh: racist.

Speaker:

00:40:23,181 --> 00:40:26,009

Marc Preston: Very nice Now if I was just watching her on

Speaker:

00:40:26,049 --> 00:40:28,295

Marc Preston: her CNN her new, i think it's called

Speaker:

00:40:28,335 --> 00:40:29,578

Marc Preston: Searching for Mexico.

Speaker:

00:40:29,825 --> 00:40:31,071

Matt Walsh: Yeah, it's awesome.

Speaker:

00:40:31,525 --> 00:40:33,792

Marc Preston: She's a wonderful fellow Texan.

Speaker:

00:40:34,073 --> 00:40:34,314

Matt Walsh: Yeah.

Speaker:

00:40:35,005 --> 00:40:37,153

Marc Preston: From what I gather from the trailer, it's

Speaker:

00:40:37,294 --> 00:40:39,562

Marc Preston: addressing Marcets that hadn't previously

Speaker:

00:40:39,642 --> 00:40:41,591

Marc Preston: been tapped into by the fast food folks.

Speaker:

00:40:41,665 --> 00:40:43,792

Marc Preston: Is that kind of the gist of it, more or

Speaker:

00:40:43,812 --> 00:40:44,033

Marc Preston: less?

Speaker:

00:40:44,705 --> 00:40:48,352

Matt Walsh: Yeah, i think it's really about a Mexican

Speaker:

00:40:48,412 --> 00:40:49,754

Matt Walsh: American tale.

Speaker:

00:40:49,814 --> 00:40:53,929

Matt Walsh: Like a guy who's a janitor grew up in

Speaker:

00:40:53,969 --> 00:40:57,792

Matt Walsh: America, his parents were picking fruit and

Speaker:

00:40:57,852 --> 00:41:02,804

Matt Walsh: vineyards and then he got a job and learned

Speaker:

00:41:02,904 --> 00:41:04,991

Matt Walsh: everything and then they were threatening

Speaker:

00:41:05,011 --> 00:41:06,658

Matt Walsh: to close the factory down and he had the

Speaker:

00:41:06,718 --> 00:41:10,953

Matt Walsh: idea to basically create food for Latinos.

Speaker:

00:41:11,605 --> 00:41:13,507

Matt Walsh: There was no Marcet yet, nobody had like,

Speaker:

00:41:14,190 --> 00:41:15,718

Matt Walsh: and he was living and looking around

Speaker:

00:41:15,758 --> 00:41:17,285

Matt Walsh: America and he's like there's tons of

Speaker:

00:41:17,326 --> 00:41:18,249

Matt Walsh: people who will buy this.

Speaker:

00:41:19,626 --> 00:41:22,352

Matt Walsh: So he came up with the idea and called the

Speaker:

00:41:22,392 --> 00:41:23,776

Matt Walsh: head of the company and he's like all right,

Speaker:

00:41:23,796 --> 00:41:24,357

Matt Walsh: they'll come down.

Speaker:

00:41:24,985 --> 00:41:27,392

Matt Walsh: Lo and behold, the guy came down and they

Speaker:

00:41:27,432 --> 00:41:29,237

Matt Walsh: worked it, he pitched it and they kind of

Speaker:

00:41:29,305 --> 00:41:31,808

Matt Walsh: made it happen and that guy helped launch

Speaker:

00:41:31,848 --> 00:41:33,150

Matt Walsh: this billion dollar industry.

Speaker:

00:41:33,490 --> 00:41:35,137

Marc Preston: You're playing like a supervisor.

Speaker:

00:41:35,197 --> 00:41:39,258

Matt Walsh: Yeah, Another middle-aged short sleeve

Speaker:

00:41:39,298 --> 00:41:40,721

Matt Walsh: wearing office jerk.

Speaker:

00:41:42,250 --> 00:41:43,615

Marc Preston: You know, if you own it, own it.

Speaker:

00:41:43,655 --> 00:41:46,377

Matt Walsh: No, no, it's great, It was so I mean,

Speaker:

00:41:46,497 --> 00:41:48,846

Matt Walsh: honestly, it was amazing because it's

Speaker:

00:41:48,866 --> 00:41:50,331

Matt Walsh: really a story about what it is to be

Speaker:

00:41:50,392 --> 00:41:51,396

Matt Walsh: Mexican in America.

Speaker:

00:41:51,496 --> 00:41:54,576

Matt Walsh: I think It's about this Latin culture and

Speaker:

00:41:54,696 --> 00:41:56,741

Matt Walsh: like working your way up into the American

Speaker:

00:41:56,801 --> 00:42:00,377

Matt Walsh: dream And, against all odds, this guy, like

Speaker:

00:42:00,417 --> 00:42:01,841

Matt Walsh: his wife, is a big part of it.

Speaker:

00:42:01,910 --> 00:42:03,958

Matt Walsh: He reconciles some stuff with his father.

Speaker:

00:42:04,410 --> 00:42:06,172

Matt Walsh: It's a beautiful story, it's really.

Speaker:

00:42:07,815 --> 00:42:09,279

Matt Walsh: It's one of those movies I always watch,

Speaker:

00:42:09,299 --> 00:42:12,391

Matt Walsh: like somebody with a dream making a car

Speaker:

00:42:12,471 --> 00:42:15,056

Matt Walsh: like Tucker, or like getting five minutes

Speaker:

00:42:15,116 --> 00:42:17,601

Matt Walsh: to play on the Notre Dame kicking team like

Speaker:

00:42:17,701 --> 00:42:18,041

Matt Walsh: Rudy.

Speaker:

00:42:18,142 --> 00:42:20,833

Matt Walsh: Yeah, like it's one of those stories and

Speaker:

00:42:20,893 --> 00:42:23,419

Matt Walsh: it's beautiful and it was fun to be, you

Speaker:

00:42:23,459 --> 00:42:25,490

Matt Walsh: know, around all these people And my

Speaker:

00:42:25,510 --> 00:42:27,095

Matt Walsh: Spanish got sharper too because they were

Speaker:

00:42:27,897 --> 00:42:29,641

Matt Walsh: often speaking Spanish to each other.

Speaker:

00:42:30,191 --> 00:42:31,095

Marc Preston: Well, no, that's what I was saying.

Speaker:

00:42:32,150 --> 00:42:32,752

Marc Preston: I'm going down to this.

Speaker:

00:42:33,053 --> 00:42:34,557

Marc Preston: I just figure I can work from anywhere and

Speaker:

00:42:34,597 --> 00:42:35,821

Marc Preston: I've always wanted to live on an island.

Speaker:

00:42:36,050 --> 00:42:36,513

Marc Preston: I don't you know.

Speaker:

00:42:36,533 --> 00:42:38,123

Marc Preston: I've done my Southern California thing.

Speaker:

00:42:38,184 --> 00:42:40,053

Marc Preston: But going down to South Padre Island in

Speaker:

00:42:40,073 --> 00:42:42,710

Marc Preston: Texas and to get a place set up, nice, and

Speaker:

00:42:42,730 --> 00:42:43,452

Marc Preston: I told my daughter, it's like baby.

Speaker:

00:42:43,492 --> 00:42:45,175

Marc Preston: I said, you know you're Spanish, you're

Speaker:

00:42:45,195 --> 00:42:46,117

Marc Preston: going to have to help me out here.

Speaker:

00:42:46,157 --> 00:42:46,458

Marc Preston: I mean, am I?

Speaker:

00:42:46,498 --> 00:42:49,450

Marc Preston: it's okay, i can get by, yeah, but it's

Speaker:

00:42:49,470 --> 00:42:50,714

Marc Preston: like here's the thing you give me a corona,

Speaker:

00:42:50,754 --> 00:42:52,499

Marc Preston: you let me sit, post up somewhere near the

Speaker:

00:42:52,539 --> 00:42:52,780

Marc Preston: beach.

Speaker:

00:42:53,250 --> 00:42:55,630

Marc Preston: It will just come back to me, yeah, or at

Speaker:

00:42:55,650 --> 00:42:55,891

Marc Preston: least I feel.

Speaker:

00:42:55,911 --> 00:42:57,235

Marc Preston: The more coronas I'll feel like more of

Speaker:

00:42:57,275 --> 00:42:58,359

Marc Preston: it's come back to me than actually has.

Speaker:

00:42:59,171 --> 00:43:00,556

Marc Preston: It just gets embarrassing after a while.

Speaker:

00:43:00,997 --> 00:43:01,619

Matt Walsh: Got the boat.

Speaker:

00:43:01,770 --> 00:43:03,275

Matt Walsh: Do you have the boat dialed in or you can

Speaker:

00:43:03,295 --> 00:43:04,058

Matt Walsh: have yourself a boat?

Speaker:

00:43:04,510 --> 00:43:07,113

Marc Preston: No, no no, no, no, I actually that's the.

Speaker:

00:43:07,214 --> 00:43:11,191

Marc Preston: you know I would love to do that It's.

Speaker:

00:43:11,271 --> 00:43:12,614

Marc Preston: it's a really neat place because right

Speaker:

00:43:12,654 --> 00:43:14,658

Marc Preston: across the bay is where SpaceX has their

Speaker:

00:43:14,698 --> 00:43:17,071

Marc Preston: launch facility, oh, wow, But.

Speaker:

00:43:17,151 --> 00:43:17,832

Marc Preston: but yeah, that's.

Speaker:

00:43:17,893 --> 00:43:20,038

Marc Preston: that's going to be my the second half of my

Speaker:

00:43:20,078 --> 00:43:20,820

Marc Preston: daughter's gap year.

Speaker:

00:43:21,610 --> 00:43:24,258

Marc Preston: The first part shall be in Barcelona,

Speaker:

00:43:24,579 --> 00:43:27,469

Marc Preston: learning Spanish, spanish, spain Spanish,

Speaker:

00:43:27,569 --> 00:43:29,114

Marc Preston: and then she'll be coming down there and

Speaker:

00:43:29,856 --> 00:43:31,100

Marc Preston: kind of helping me out a little bit.

Speaker:

00:43:31,951 --> 00:43:33,816

Marc Preston: But tell you what, before we get running, i

Speaker:

00:43:33,856 --> 00:43:35,741

Marc Preston: got my what I call my seven questions that

Speaker:

00:43:35,760 --> 00:43:36,382

Marc Preston: I like to ask.

Speaker:

00:43:36,810 --> 00:43:38,976

Marc Preston: It's kind of an additional little get to

Speaker:

00:43:39,016 --> 00:43:39,878

Marc Preston: know you, a little fun.

Speaker:

00:43:41,530 --> 00:43:42,815

Marc Preston: One of the things is I'm always curious

Speaker:

00:43:42,835 --> 00:43:43,698

Marc Preston: about because I'm a food guy.

Speaker:

00:43:43,990 --> 00:43:45,556

Marc Preston: I can talk food day in, day in, day out.

Speaker:

00:43:46,370 --> 00:43:48,357

Marc Preston: But what is your favorite comfort food?

Speaker:

00:43:48,890 --> 00:43:50,722

Marc Preston: Something that it's like craft service

Speaker:

00:43:50,742 --> 00:43:51,930

Marc Preston: tables like this is nothing.

Speaker:

00:43:52,131 --> 00:43:53,136

Marc Preston: I just want this thing.

Speaker:

00:43:53,270 --> 00:43:54,636

Marc Preston: This is going to be comforting.

Speaker:

00:43:56,384 --> 00:43:56,990

Matt Walsh: You know what would that be?

Speaker:

00:43:57,210 --> 00:43:59,677

Matt Walsh: Um, i guess snack.

Speaker:

00:43:59,878 --> 00:44:01,161

Matt Walsh: my mind goes to snack food.

Speaker:

00:44:01,290 --> 00:44:04,450

Matt Walsh: Like I'm a sucker for caramel corn, like

Speaker:

00:44:04,470 --> 00:44:06,812

Matt Walsh: that's kind of an Achilles heel, like I try

Speaker:

00:44:06,852 --> 00:44:10,381

Matt Walsh: not to eat it, but it's very comforting to

Speaker:

00:44:10,481 --> 00:44:11,463

Matt Walsh: see a good.

Speaker:

00:44:12,707 --> 00:44:14,733

Matt Walsh: oh my God, if it's warm like freshly made

Speaker:

00:44:14,753 --> 00:44:15,817

Matt Walsh: caramel corn, forget it.

Speaker:

00:44:16,010 --> 00:44:18,159

Marc Preston: We one time I you know, during COVID, we're

Speaker:

00:44:18,179 --> 00:44:20,829

Marc Preston: getting deliveries from Costco and they

Speaker:

00:44:20,849 --> 00:44:22,093

Marc Preston: messed up something in my order and

Speaker:

00:44:22,153 --> 00:44:23,638

Marc Preston: accidentally brought me this big bag of

Speaker:

00:44:23,678 --> 00:44:26,152

Marc Preston: things called creeders, caramel, corn and

Speaker:

00:44:26,572 --> 00:44:28,314

Marc Preston: cheese cheese Chicago.

Speaker:

00:44:28,354 --> 00:44:30,116

Matt Walsh: Yeah, that's the Chicago mix, come on.

Speaker:

00:44:30,497 --> 00:44:31,337

Marc Preston: I know that's what they call it, that's

Speaker:

00:44:31,357 --> 00:44:31,818

Marc Preston: what Chicago.

Speaker:

00:44:31,958 --> 00:44:33,520

Marc Preston: Yeah, that's what's dangerous, oh yeah.

Speaker:

00:44:33,880 --> 00:44:36,463

Matt Walsh: Exactly 100%, 100%.

Speaker:

00:44:39,431 --> 00:44:40,299

Marc Preston: When you look at it, this big bag and half

Speaker:

00:44:40,319 --> 00:44:41,509

Marc Preston: of it's gone is like I can't not be doing

Speaker:

00:44:41,529 --> 00:44:42,754

Marc Preston: this Well it's made of corn.

Speaker:

00:44:42,814 --> 00:44:43,897

Matt Walsh: It's not that bad for me.

Speaker:

00:44:43,917 --> 00:44:45,582

Marc Preston: I mean, it's just pop See that's the way I

Speaker:

00:44:45,623 --> 00:44:46,009

Marc Preston: think about it.

Speaker:

00:44:46,050 --> 00:44:47,596

Marc Preston: See, you're on the same page as me, though,

Speaker:

00:44:47,930 --> 00:44:49,676

Marc Preston: It's like, although my cholesterol level

Speaker:

00:44:49,716 --> 00:44:50,459

Marc Preston: says otherwise.

Speaker:

00:44:51,031 --> 00:44:52,535

Marc Preston: Now, the second question I got for you is

Speaker:

00:44:52,956 --> 00:44:54,741

Marc Preston: if you were to take three people sit down,

Speaker:

00:44:54,890 --> 00:44:55,959

Marc Preston: you're going to have a cup of coffee with

Speaker:

00:44:55,979 --> 00:44:57,209

Marc Preston: them and you're going to have, you know,

Speaker:

00:44:57,229 --> 00:44:58,735

Marc Preston: talk for a few hours, have conversation.

Speaker:

00:44:59,337 --> 00:45:00,320

Marc Preston: Who would those three people be?

Speaker:

00:45:00,410 --> 00:45:02,877

Marc Preston: I mean living or not, who would you enjoy

Speaker:

00:45:02,917 --> 00:45:03,719

Marc Preston: talking story with?

Speaker:

00:45:04,651 --> 00:45:07,672

Matt Walsh: Oh my gosh, living or dead.

Speaker:

00:45:07,712 --> 00:45:08,515

Matt Walsh: You said right.

Speaker:

00:45:09,017 --> 00:45:11,453

Marc Preston: Yeah, just you know somebody, anybody that

Speaker:

00:45:11,493 --> 00:45:13,878

Marc Preston: you feel like would kind of elevate your

Speaker:

00:45:13,918 --> 00:45:14,820

Marc Preston: experience of life.

Speaker:

00:45:14,901 --> 00:45:15,863

Matt Walsh: I'm going to go.

Speaker:

00:45:17,634 --> 00:45:22,075

Matt Walsh: I'm going to go, harry Truman, because I

Speaker:

00:45:22,295 --> 00:45:24,820

Matt Walsh: remember really liking him as a young kid

Speaker:

00:45:25,100 --> 00:45:26,122

Matt Walsh: studying presidents.

Speaker:

00:45:26,423 --> 00:45:27,224

Matt Walsh: I'm going to go.

Speaker:

00:45:28,192 --> 00:45:31,499

Matt Walsh: I mean, you might as well go dead, right.

Speaker:

00:45:32,661 --> 00:45:33,543

Matt Walsh: Who else would I go?

Speaker:

00:45:33,710 --> 00:45:37,316

Matt Walsh: I'd probably go with, like Da Vinci.

Speaker:

00:45:38,338 --> 00:45:42,164

Matt Walsh: Leonardo Da Vinci, and then because he's a

Speaker:

00:45:42,504 --> 00:45:46,835

Matt Walsh: brilliant genius of a mind, and then maybe

Speaker:

00:45:46,895 --> 00:45:48,359

Matt Walsh: Michael Jordan, because I never met him.

Speaker:

00:45:48,640 --> 00:45:49,061

Marc Preston: Yeah, he did.

Speaker:

00:45:49,650 --> 00:45:50,752

Marc Preston: He did a couple of things in Chicago, i

Speaker:

00:45:50,792 --> 00:45:53,517

Marc Preston: think, didn't he Like, yeah, i think he did?

Speaker:

00:45:53,557 --> 00:45:54,398

Matt Walsh: What was the sport?

Speaker:

00:45:54,418 --> 00:45:56,281

Matt Walsh: again, i forget Basketball.

Speaker:

00:45:57,063 --> 00:45:58,934

Marc Preston: I think curling, no, no, no, something else,

Speaker:

00:45:59,450 --> 00:45:59,891

Marc Preston: but he was.

Speaker:

00:46:00,954 --> 00:46:03,320

Marc Preston: Yeah, that being Chicago back then must

Speaker:

00:46:03,340 --> 00:46:04,523

Marc Preston: have been just insane.

Speaker:

00:46:05,112 --> 00:46:07,499

Marc Preston: In fact, that's another that I think air.

Speaker:

00:46:08,391 --> 00:46:09,935

Marc Preston: I think that's the movie about the air

Speaker:

00:46:10,035 --> 00:46:10,316

Marc Preston: Jordan.

Speaker:

00:46:10,616 --> 00:46:12,100

Marc Preston: Yeah, yeah, i need to watch it.

Speaker:

00:46:12,380 --> 00:46:14,432

Marc Preston: That's on the list Now going.

Speaker:

00:46:14,512 --> 00:46:17,799

Marc Preston: Third question who was your first celebrity

Speaker:

00:46:17,819 --> 00:46:19,142

Marc Preston: crush when you were young?

Speaker:

00:46:19,850 --> 00:46:23,238

Matt Walsh: Crush like oh she's beautiful, like for me.

Speaker:

00:46:23,358 --> 00:46:25,590

Matt Walsh: or crush like oh, that guy is amazing, that

Speaker:

00:46:25,611 --> 00:46:26,475

Matt Walsh: person's amazing.

Speaker:

00:46:27,573 --> 00:46:29,339

Marc Preston: No, you know it could be either one.

Speaker:

00:46:29,571 --> 00:46:30,093

Marc Preston: You know it could be.

Speaker:

00:46:30,113 --> 00:46:31,921

Marc Preston: Just like you see a lady in a movie going

Speaker:

00:46:32,042 --> 00:46:33,468

Marc Preston: oh my gosh, like for me, like Olivia

Speaker:

00:46:33,489 --> 00:46:33,810

Marc Preston: Newton-John.

Speaker:

00:46:33,971 --> 00:46:36,854

Matt Walsh: I was like oh okay, i think it was maybe

Speaker:

00:46:38,097 --> 00:46:39,119

Matt Walsh: Jessica Lange.

Speaker:

00:46:40,531 --> 00:46:42,914

Matt Walsh: Like that's a star Like she's so beautiful,

Speaker:

00:46:43,175 --> 00:46:43,416

Matt Walsh: sure?

Speaker:

00:46:44,190 --> 00:46:45,378

Marc Preston: Or you know, the second half of kind of

Speaker:

00:46:45,398 --> 00:46:46,949

Marc Preston: what you brought up, who was the person you

Speaker:

00:46:46,990 --> 00:46:49,238

Marc Preston: saw is like they just killed me.

Speaker:

00:46:50,855 --> 00:46:52,259

Marc Preston: Magnetic or mesmerizing assembly.

Speaker:

00:46:52,830 --> 00:46:56,598

Matt Walsh: I think like for me someone from Chicago.

Speaker:

00:46:56,618 --> 00:46:59,584

Matt Walsh: I think there were people like John Belushi

Speaker:

00:46:59,670 --> 00:47:01,799

Matt Walsh: or Bill Murray who were like, because they

Speaker:

00:47:01,819 --> 00:47:04,208

Matt Walsh: were from Chicago, it was like they were

Speaker:

00:47:04,248 --> 00:47:08,300

Matt Walsh: amazing and they had it seemed connected to

Speaker:

00:47:08,360 --> 00:47:08,801

Matt Walsh: my life.

Speaker:

00:47:09,050 --> 00:47:10,496

Matt Walsh: You know, they were from my hometown.

Speaker:

00:47:10,810 --> 00:47:12,297

Marc Preston: You see, as a kid growing up in Texas I

Speaker:

00:47:12,337 --> 00:47:14,688

Marc Preston: thought everybody in Chicago lived in a big

Speaker:

00:47:14,748 --> 00:47:15,431

Marc Preston: suburban house.

Speaker:

00:47:15,471 --> 00:47:17,778

Marc Preston: Their father worked in advertising you know,

Speaker:

00:47:17,798 --> 00:47:18,761

Marc Preston: there's things that were set up.

Speaker:

00:47:18,850 --> 00:47:20,454

Marc Preston: They did the whole John Hughes thing.

Speaker:

00:47:20,494 --> 00:47:23,882

Marc Preston: You know, it's like I thought everybody did.

Speaker:

00:47:24,010 --> 00:47:27,217

Marc Preston: You know and like, but I was influenced, i

Speaker:

00:47:27,237 --> 00:47:28,440

Marc Preston: guess, as a kid, by John Hughes.

Speaker:

00:47:30,130 --> 00:47:31,138

Marc Preston: Now, if you're going to be going, next

Speaker:

00:47:31,179 --> 00:47:32,207

Marc Preston: question if you're going to be going down

Speaker:

00:47:32,227 --> 00:47:33,757

Marc Preston: to an island, it could be an exotic island,

Speaker:

00:47:33,877 --> 00:47:35,928

Marc Preston: somewhere that you're going to enjoy being.

Speaker:

00:47:35,968 --> 00:47:37,533

Marc Preston: It's not like you're, it's like deserted

Speaker:

00:47:37,654 --> 00:47:40,100

Marc Preston: island, but you don't have streaming and

Speaker:

00:47:40,140 --> 00:47:41,792

Marc Preston: you can only if you want to consume any

Speaker:

00:47:41,812 --> 00:47:42,554

Marc Preston: kind of entertainment.

Speaker:

00:47:43,235 --> 00:47:45,921

Marc Preston: It's going to be in the form of a book, an

Speaker:

00:47:46,041 --> 00:47:48,575

Marc Preston: album, if you want to.

Speaker:

00:47:48,595 --> 00:47:49,558

Marc Preston: You want to watch a movie.

Speaker:

00:47:49,858 --> 00:47:50,581

Marc Preston: It's going to be on DVD.

Speaker:

00:47:50,850 --> 00:47:51,834

Marc Preston: So what would the DVD be?

Speaker:

00:47:52,430 --> 00:47:53,874

Marc Preston: What would a CD be that you would bring

Speaker:

00:47:53,915 --> 00:47:55,158

Marc Preston: down there, an album and a movie?

Speaker:

00:47:56,130 --> 00:48:00,239

Matt Walsh: So, to be clear, it's either a book, cd

Speaker:

00:48:00,440 --> 00:48:01,923

Matt Walsh: album or DVD.

Speaker:

00:48:01,990 --> 00:48:03,714

Marc Preston: Yeah, you know some people, some people say,

Speaker:

00:48:03,754 --> 00:48:05,278

Marc Preston: well, i don't really, wouldn't really want

Speaker:

00:48:05,298 --> 00:48:06,802

Marc Preston: to bring a movie, i'd want to bring a book.

Speaker:

00:48:07,290 --> 00:48:08,994

Marc Preston: So I've now opened it up to the idea of a

Speaker:

00:48:09,055 --> 00:48:09,817

Marc Preston: book also.

Speaker:

00:48:09,917 --> 00:48:12,492

Marc Preston: but you know something to listen to music

Speaker:

00:48:12,532 --> 00:48:14,477

Marc Preston: wise, a movie to watch, maybe a book as

Speaker:

00:48:14,558 --> 00:48:15,280

Marc Preston: well, if you'd like.

Speaker:

00:48:15,930 --> 00:48:18,877

Matt Walsh: Well, just because I'm trying to make my

Speaker:

00:48:18,937 --> 00:48:22,304

Matt Walsh: way through it, i would try to either

Speaker:

00:48:24,509 --> 00:48:26,574

Matt Walsh: finally finish Moby Dick, because I've

Speaker:

00:48:26,614 --> 00:48:28,719

Matt Walsh: started that book like four times and I've

Speaker:

00:48:29,360 --> 00:48:32,213

Matt Walsh: lost it on airplanes or just quit on it,

Speaker:

00:48:33,215 --> 00:48:35,640

Matt Walsh: and or because it seems like I'm going to

Speaker:

00:48:35,660 --> 00:48:37,751

Matt Walsh: have a ton of time on my hands, So it's a

Speaker:

00:48:37,771 --> 00:48:40,554

Matt Walsh: good project, or I just started reading

Speaker:

00:48:42,298 --> 00:48:44,885

Matt Walsh: Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and it's

Speaker:

00:48:44,925 --> 00:48:47,732

Matt Walsh: like bite-size things about what it is to

Speaker:

00:48:47,773 --> 00:48:49,277

Matt Walsh: be a good person or a good man.

Speaker:

00:48:49,839 --> 00:48:50,481

Matt Walsh: It's 2000.

Speaker:

00:48:50,570 --> 00:48:51,715

Marc Preston: I've been seeing a lot of his quotes.

Speaker:

00:48:52,110 --> 00:48:53,797

Matt Walsh: Yeah, it's a 2000 year old collection.

Speaker:

00:48:53,930 --> 00:48:55,772

Matt Walsh: He wrote it to himself, it was just his

Speaker:

00:48:55,852 --> 00:48:56,334

Matt Walsh: diary.

Speaker:

00:48:56,394 --> 00:48:58,391

Matt Walsh: Basically He was like a Roman Yeah, he was

Speaker:

00:48:58,431 --> 00:49:02,660

Matt Walsh: a Roman emperor off in some land you know,

Speaker:

00:49:02,700 --> 00:49:04,383

Matt Walsh: defending the Roman empire, and he

Speaker:

00:49:04,930 --> 00:49:07,438

Matt Walsh: basically kept a journal and somebody found

Speaker:

00:49:07,478 --> 00:49:10,737

Matt Walsh: it and published it And it's really, it's

Speaker:

00:49:10,798 --> 00:49:11,360

Matt Walsh: one of those things.

Speaker:

00:49:11,450 --> 00:49:13,219

Matt Walsh: You just you read a page and then you put

Speaker:

00:49:13,239 --> 00:49:15,249

Matt Walsh: it down for a couple of days because it

Speaker:

00:49:15,269 --> 00:49:17,074

Matt Walsh: seems built for the island life, because

Speaker:

00:49:17,094 --> 00:49:18,919

Matt Walsh: you could like you're never going to

Speaker:

00:49:18,959 --> 00:49:20,730

Matt Walsh: comprehend those dense nuggets, so you

Speaker:

00:49:20,750 --> 00:49:22,875

Matt Walsh: could read a page and then walk around the

Speaker:

00:49:22,996 --> 00:49:24,920

Matt Walsh: island and catch fish, have a barbecue.

Speaker:

00:49:25,870 --> 00:49:27,757

Matt Walsh: Two days later you come back to page two.

Speaker:

00:49:27,958 --> 00:49:29,753

Marc Preston: You know It's kind of groove on life a

Speaker:

00:49:29,793 --> 00:49:31,237

Marc Preston: little bit and to kind of let it sink in.

Speaker:

00:49:31,277 --> 00:49:32,680

Marc Preston: Yeah exactly.

Speaker:

00:49:32,721 --> 00:49:33,563

Matt Walsh: Let it sink in.

Speaker:

00:49:33,670 --> 00:49:35,236

Matt Walsh: Yeah, yeah You get it.

Speaker:

00:49:36,171 --> 00:49:37,514

Marc Preston: It's almost kind of meditative in that

Speaker:

00:49:37,555 --> 00:49:37,896

Marc Preston: regard.

Speaker:

00:49:37,956 --> 00:49:40,182

Marc Preston: you know, to some degree Yeah.

Speaker:

00:49:40,671 --> 00:49:41,954

Matt Walsh: I would also have a secret.

Speaker:

00:49:42,014 --> 00:49:44,479

Matt Walsh: You know, hideout like a James Bond villain

Speaker:

00:49:44,519 --> 00:49:45,702

Matt Walsh: on my island, just so you know.

Speaker:

00:49:46,370 --> 00:49:47,477

Marc Preston: See, you got to and it's got to have some

Speaker:

00:49:47,598 --> 00:49:49,450

Marc Preston: swing mid-century furniture kind of, like

Speaker:

00:49:49,530 --> 00:49:50,453

Marc Preston: you know the what was it?

Speaker:

00:49:50,534 --> 00:49:51,115

Announcer: Incredibles?

Speaker:

00:49:51,416 --> 00:49:52,259

Announcer: Yeah, exactly.

Speaker:

00:49:53,252 --> 00:49:55,941

Marc Preston: Now, if you were to define, from time to

Speaker:

00:49:55,981 --> 00:49:58,569

Marc Preston: get up to time, to get a bed the component

Speaker:

00:49:58,609 --> 00:50:00,159

Marc Preston: parts of a perfect day for you, where

Speaker:

00:50:00,179 --> 00:50:01,388

Marc Preston: something's kind of laid out, everything

Speaker:

00:50:01,428 --> 00:50:01,971

Marc Preston: just kind of hit.

Speaker:

00:50:02,011 --> 00:50:04,918

Marc Preston: you know it could be going to the coffee

Speaker:

00:50:04,958 --> 00:50:06,550

Marc Preston: shop getting the perfect cup of coffee, i

Speaker:

00:50:06,591 --> 00:50:06,872

Marc Preston: don't know.

Speaker:

00:50:06,932 --> 00:50:08,236

Marc Preston: whatever it happens to be all the way

Speaker:

00:50:08,276 --> 00:50:10,272

Marc Preston: through the day, what are those things that

Speaker:

00:50:10,312 --> 00:50:12,739

Marc Preston: would be, for you, component parts of a

Speaker:

00:50:12,779 --> 00:50:13,280

Marc Preston: perfect day?

Speaker:

00:50:13,910 --> 00:50:19,436

Matt Walsh: Coffee, bit of meditation, family, creative

Speaker:

00:50:19,496 --> 00:50:26,905

Matt Walsh: work, laughter, dynamite, dinner, nature,

Speaker:

00:50:27,345 --> 00:50:31,876

Matt Walsh: something immersing myself in nature, more

Speaker:

00:50:31,936 --> 00:50:35,863

Matt Walsh: laughter, consume some media and more

Speaker:

00:50:35,923 --> 00:50:39,096

Matt Walsh: family, i would live a very, a very similar

Speaker:

00:50:39,136 --> 00:50:40,581

Matt Walsh: life, That's very yeah.

Speaker:

00:50:40,930 --> 00:50:42,095

Marc Preston: That's, that's to me.

Speaker:

00:50:42,350 --> 00:50:44,115

Marc Preston: That's the thing is like I'm, i'm, i'm

Speaker:

00:50:44,195 --> 00:50:46,121

Marc Preston: busying myself more because I know my kids

Speaker:

00:50:46,190 --> 00:50:47,694

Marc Preston: being in college and my youngest one, i'm

Speaker:

00:50:47,714 --> 00:50:49,780

Marc Preston: like feel like all right, well, make myself

Speaker:

00:50:49,860 --> 00:50:52,454

Marc Preston: super busy, then I'm not going to notice

Speaker:

00:50:52,475 --> 00:50:54,159

Marc Preston: the fact the house is a lot emptier, you

Speaker:

00:50:54,199 --> 00:50:54,339

Marc Preston: know.

Speaker:

00:50:54,380 --> 00:50:56,615

Marc Preston: So I'm enjoying the family stuff as much as

Speaker:

00:50:56,655 --> 00:50:57,993

Marc Preston: I possibly can And they still like spending

Speaker:

00:50:58,034 --> 00:50:58,435

Marc Preston: time with me.

Speaker:

00:50:58,610 --> 00:51:01,116

Marc Preston: So I consider myself to be very fortunate

Speaker:

00:51:01,156 --> 00:51:02,679

Marc Preston: in that regard when it comes to family.

Speaker:

00:51:04,270 --> 00:51:05,939

Marc Preston: But now the last question for you.

Speaker:

00:51:05,959 --> 00:51:07,246

Marc Preston: I got, let's say you got a DeLorean.

Speaker:

00:51:07,266 --> 00:51:09,815

Marc Preston: You can pop back and travel to see 16 year

Speaker:

00:51:09,855 --> 00:51:11,059

Marc Preston: old Matt back in Chicago.

Speaker:

00:51:12,090 --> 00:51:14,187

Marc Preston: You got a piece of advice, either to make

Speaker:

00:51:14,294 --> 00:51:16,449

Marc Preston: your life better in that moment or to kind

Speaker:

00:51:16,556 --> 00:51:17,793

Marc Preston: of get yourself on a track.

Speaker:

00:51:19,297 --> 00:51:20,160

Marc Preston: You know a better track.

Speaker:

00:51:20,370 --> 00:51:22,997

Marc Preston: What would that piece of advice be for a 16

Speaker:

00:51:23,037 --> 00:51:23,378

Marc Preston: year old?

Speaker:

00:51:23,759 --> 00:51:26,977

Matt Walsh: you Don't make your friends in class laugh.

Speaker:

00:51:27,418 --> 00:51:29,494

Marc Preston: pay attention, But see if you didn't make

Speaker:

00:51:29,535 --> 00:51:30,317

Marc Preston: your friends in class laugh.

Speaker:

00:51:31,271 --> 00:51:33,398

Matt Walsh: Yeah, but you, just you can still be funny

Speaker:

00:51:33,458 --> 00:51:35,893

Matt Walsh: outside of class, like you're missing out

Speaker:

00:51:36,875 --> 00:51:40,543

Matt Walsh: on learning and the discipline of learning.

Speaker:

00:51:40,830 --> 00:51:41,934

Announcer: I probably had 80 D.

Speaker:

00:51:42,014 --> 00:51:45,256

Matt Walsh: So there was that going on too, but that's

Speaker:

00:51:45,276 --> 00:51:46,772

Matt Walsh: what I would say, and I would I would have

Speaker:

00:51:46,812 --> 00:51:48,977

Matt Walsh: more to say around that, because 16 years,

Speaker:

00:51:48,997 --> 00:51:49,839

Matt Walsh: like what are you talking about?

Speaker:

00:51:50,480 --> 00:51:51,022

Matt Walsh: All right, sit down.

Speaker:

00:51:51,610 --> 00:51:53,056

Matt Walsh: Let me tell you why learning is important.

Speaker:

00:51:53,330 --> 00:51:54,475

Matt Walsh: These are fundamental skills.

Speaker:

00:51:54,650 --> 00:51:55,554

Matt Walsh: This is a discipline.

Speaker:

00:51:56,210 --> 00:51:58,370

Matt Walsh: There's cool stuff happening here That

Speaker:

00:51:58,390 --> 00:52:00,496

Matt Walsh: methodical thought that patients you're

Speaker:

00:52:00,516 --> 00:52:02,260

Matt Walsh: developing sitting in a chair in high

Speaker:

00:52:02,300 --> 00:52:02,561

Matt Walsh: school.

Speaker:

00:52:03,290 --> 00:52:04,252

Matt Walsh: You can start to grow.

Speaker:

00:52:04,332 --> 00:52:06,517

Matt Walsh: Other disciplines like that will help you

Speaker:

00:52:06,577 --> 00:52:06,978

Matt Walsh: in life.

Speaker:

00:52:07,720 --> 00:52:13,820

Matt Walsh: Focus and build a plan or not, or continue

Speaker:

00:52:13,840 --> 00:52:14,743

Matt Walsh: to make your friends laugh.

Speaker:

00:52:15,552 --> 00:52:16,757

Matt Walsh: Matt, i got to go back to the future.

Speaker:

00:52:17,171 --> 00:52:18,114

Marc Preston: Yeah, i was always.

Speaker:

00:52:18,375 --> 00:52:19,880

Marc Preston: I was very much the same way in school.

Speaker:

00:52:20,090 --> 00:52:22,257

Marc Preston: I just if something grabbed my attention, i

Speaker:

00:52:22,337 --> 00:52:23,540

Marc Preston: was full in.

Speaker:

00:52:23,810 --> 00:52:25,654

Marc Preston: If something didn't grab my attention, i

Speaker:

00:52:25,814 --> 00:52:27,397

Marc Preston: was just struggling to stay focused.

Speaker:

00:52:27,618 --> 00:52:28,560

Marc Preston: My grades weren't bad.

Speaker:

00:52:28,600 --> 00:52:30,203

Matt Walsh: That's true, you're right.

Speaker:

00:52:30,650 --> 00:52:32,034

Matt Walsh: There are classes that even if you paid

Speaker:

00:52:32,074 --> 00:52:33,720

Matt Walsh: attention, it wouldn't have permeated me.

Speaker:

00:52:33,990 --> 00:52:36,055

Matt Walsh: So I don't know, maybe I'll have to go back

Speaker:

00:52:36,116 --> 00:52:37,970

Matt Walsh: in time again off to rewrite that one.

Speaker:

00:52:38,030 --> 00:52:39,638

Marc Preston: Yeah, i think psychology for me was

Speaker:

00:52:40,241 --> 00:52:41,748

Marc Preston: interesting because a psychology teacher

Speaker:

00:52:41,768 --> 00:52:43,333

Marc Preston: was kind of an odd ball and he'd walk

Speaker:

00:52:43,353 --> 00:52:44,898

Marc Preston: around the hallways with a book balanced on

Speaker:

00:52:44,938 --> 00:52:46,694

Marc Preston: his head and it was just like he was in his

Speaker:

00:52:46,754 --> 00:52:47,136

Marc Preston: own world.

Speaker:

00:52:47,330 --> 00:52:48,995

Marc Preston: I was like, if I can be like that man,

Speaker:

00:52:49,055 --> 00:52:50,318

Marc Preston: psychology is my jam.

Speaker:

00:52:50,338 --> 00:52:50,880

Announcer: I love that.

Speaker:

00:52:51,550 --> 00:52:53,075

Marc Preston: Well, my friend, i certainly appreciate

Speaker:

00:52:53,437 --> 00:52:53,938

Marc Preston: your time.

Speaker:

00:52:54,792 --> 00:52:55,335

Marc Preston: Really I do.

Speaker:

00:52:55,590 --> 00:52:57,115

Marc Preston: I know you probably want to enjoy just

Speaker:

00:52:57,155 --> 00:52:59,391

Marc Preston: kicking back with a fam, but, my friend,

Speaker:

00:52:59,451 --> 00:53:01,495

Marc Preston: have yourself a wonderful rest of your

Speaker:

00:53:01,535 --> 00:53:01,836

Marc Preston: weekend.

Speaker:

00:53:01,856 --> 00:53:02,717

Marc Preston: We're close enough to a weekend.

Speaker:

00:53:02,737 --> 00:53:03,499

Marc Preston: Have a great weekend.

Speaker:

00:53:03,719 --> 00:53:04,821

Marc Preston: Thank you, Marc, this was fun.

Speaker:

00:53:05,001 --> 00:53:05,602

Marc Preston: Thank you very much.

Speaker:

00:53:07,632 --> 00:53:09,158

Marc Preston: Well, there you go, mr Matt Walsh.

Speaker:

00:53:09,770 --> 00:53:11,016

Marc Preston: Enjoy the chat quite a bit.

Speaker:

00:53:11,290 --> 00:53:13,517

Marc Preston: Such a talented guy, funny Everything he's

Speaker:

00:53:13,698 --> 00:53:15,035

Marc Preston: in, always a good laugh.

Speaker:

00:53:15,690 --> 00:53:18,036

Marc Preston: Great to see him show up in any project,

Speaker:

00:53:18,096 --> 00:53:19,801

Marc Preston: both on TV and film.

Speaker:

00:53:20,210 --> 00:53:22,636

Marc Preston: The new movie Don't Forget on Hulu is

Speaker:

00:53:22,716 --> 00:53:24,320

Marc Preston: called Flamin' Hot.

Speaker:

00:53:25,250 --> 00:53:26,214

Marc Preston: Checked it out the other night with my

Speaker:

00:53:26,254 --> 00:53:27,814

Marc Preston: daughter, really enjoyed the movie and I'm

Speaker:

00:53:27,854 --> 00:53:28,718

Marc Preston: sure you will as well.

Speaker:

00:53:28,870 --> 00:53:30,435

Marc Preston: I mean, it's an underdog story that

Speaker:

00:53:30,495 --> 00:53:31,479

Marc Preston: features snack food.

Speaker:

00:53:31,970 --> 00:53:33,652

Marc Preston: I mean, come on, sit down and get something

Speaker:

00:53:33,672 --> 00:53:34,716

Marc Preston: crunchy and enjoy the show.

Speaker:

00:53:36,050 --> 00:53:39,419

Marc Preston: As always, storyandcraftpod.com, everything

Speaker:

00:53:39,459 --> 00:53:40,040

Marc Preston: about the show.

Speaker:

00:53:40,730 --> 00:53:43,074

Speaker:

00:53:46,078 --> 00:53:49,090

Marc Preston: favorite podcast service platform, whatever

00:53:49,210 --> 00:53:49,532

Matt Walsh Profile Photo

Matt Walsh

Actor | Writer

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Matt Walsh began his comedy career as an improvisational actor. After he finished college he performed at several improv clubs and practiced under legendary improv teacher, Del Close.

In 1990, Matt, along with friends Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and SNL alumna Amy Poehler founded the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy troupe. The television series ran for three seasons on Comedy Central. He appeared as a correspondent on The Daily Show from 2001 to 2002 and has also featured in several sketches on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Since his improvisational days, Matt has landed several notable roles in such films as Semi-Pro (2008), Role Models (2008) and The Hangover (2009). He is known for his straight-faced, sardonic and sarcastic characters, often acting in opposition to the protagonists.

In 2010 Matt created the partially scripted comedy series Players, which aired on Spike TV in 2010 and featured Besser and Roberts from the Upright Citizens Brigade.

In the last several years Matt has had recurring roles on several television shows, such as Hung, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Outsourced. In 2012 he landed a co-starring role on the series Veep alongside comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for which he earned an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Matt appeared in the new reboot of Ghostbusters (2016) as well as the films Office Christmas Party (2016) and Keeping Up with the Joneses (2016). In the comedy Life of the Party (2018) he played Melissa McCarthy's ex-husband.
