Tom Brooke | Family, Love & Empire of Light

Tom Brooke | Family, Love & Empire of Light

On this episode of The Story & Craft Podcast, we sit down for a chat with actor, Tom Brooke.  He stars in the upcoming Sam Mendes movie, Empire of Light. Tom shared his experiences working with an incredible cast in one of my personal favorite movies, Pirate Radio, as well as his admiration for the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. We also discussed his work in popular TV shows like Bodyguard, Preacher, and The Crown.

Tom opened up about his daughter's adaptability while living in different countries and how kids have adjusted to the challenges of COVID-19. We also reminisced about his time working on the movie, Pirate Radio, which brought back memories of my own childhood aspirations of working in radio. Additionally, we touched on Tom's own childhood memories and growing up with his father, who was an actor as well.

We explored Tom's journey to becoming an actor, his preference for stage or on-camera work, and the life of a working actor with a family. We also talked about his role in the Sam Mendes project, Empire of Light, as well as how his mother's passing provided him the motivation to join the project. So, join us in this engaging and heartfelt episode, as we dive into the world of storytelling with the talented Tom Brooke.

00:01:58,244 --> 00:01:59,107

Marc Preston: Very good, actually Very.

56

00:01:59,248 --> 00:02:01,436

Marc Preston: You know, it's after Christmas and the

57

00:02:01,476 --> 00:02:02,480

Marc Preston: things are just kind of like.

58

00:02:02,600 --> 00:02:04,186

Marc Preston: They feel like they kind of slow down a

59

00:02:04,226 --> 00:02:05,691

Marc Preston: little bit, you know, but still trying to

60

00:02:05,711 --> 00:02:07,784

Marc Preston: get work done you know, we had our first

61

00:02:08,887 --> 00:02:11,252

Marc Preston: Thanksgiving ever this year.

62

00:02:11,842 --> 00:02:14,069

Marc Preston: So you aren't in the UK, you're over here

63

00:02:14,149 --> 00:02:14,289

Marc Preston: now.

64

00:02:14,680 --> 00:02:15,082

Marc Preston: Boston.

65

00:02:15,363 --> 00:02:16,307

Marc Preston: How'd you end up in Boston?

66

00:02:17,340 --> 00:02:19,965

Tom Brooke: Oh, my wife does a TV show here called

67

00:02:20,025 --> 00:02:22,890

Tom Brooke: Julia, about Julia Child.

68

00:02:23,611 --> 00:02:24,492

Tom Brooke: It's on HBO.

69

00:02:24,993 --> 00:02:27,063

Tom Brooke: We've all come over Our daughter's at

70

00:02:27,083 --> 00:02:29,510

Tom Brooke: school here as well, and held your daughter

71

00:02:30,393 --> 00:02:31,216

Tom Brooke: She's seven now.

72

00:02:32,038 --> 00:02:33,962

Tom Brooke: We were all here last year for season one,

73

00:02:35,565 --> 00:02:39,331

Tom Brooke: And then we all came back for season two.

74

00:02:39,652 --> 00:02:42,441

Tom Brooke: Same apartment, same school for her same

75

00:02:42,461 --> 00:02:42,902

Tom Brooke: friends.

76

00:02:43,383 --> 00:02:47,190

Marc Preston: I have to ask because I, well, i have a 17

77

00:02:47,210 --> 00:02:47,972

Marc Preston: year old who's.

78

00:02:48,232 --> 00:02:51,664

Marc Preston: That's my youngest, and so I know well

79

00:02:51,704 --> 00:02:52,948

Marc Preston: she's not 17 yet.

80

00:02:53,008 --> 00:02:56,660

Marc Preston: She will be in seven days, so you know, but

81

00:02:56,700 --> 00:02:57,783

Marc Preston: I got three, Is that right?

82

00:02:58,204 --> 00:02:59,567

Marc Preston: I've got, yes, i've got three.

83

00:02:59,788 --> 00:03:01,860

Marc Preston: Three, i call my little people, but my

84

00:03:01,921 --> 00:03:03,543

Marc Preston: son's almost taller than me and I'm six too,

85

00:03:03,684 --> 00:03:09,234

Marc Preston: so I've got two at Loyola University in New

86

00:03:09,314 --> 00:03:11,286

Marc Preston: Orleans, and my youngest is graduating a

87

00:03:11,326 --> 00:03:13,253

Marc Preston: year early, and I don't know where she's

88

00:03:13,293 --> 00:03:15,802

Marc Preston: going, but she's, yeah, but it is.

89

00:03:16,143 --> 00:03:18,368

Marc Preston: I remember, though, the seven year old age

90

00:03:18,428 --> 00:03:19,050

Marc Preston: range.

91

00:03:19,571 --> 00:03:22,859

Marc Preston: Is it easy for her to adapt?

92

00:03:22,879 --> 00:03:23,120

Marc Preston: to me?

93

00:03:23,160 --> 00:03:24,787

Marc Preston: moving from school to school is one thing,

94

00:03:24,868 --> 00:03:26,757

Marc Preston: but going from country to country to a new

95

00:03:26,797 --> 00:03:27,360

Marc Preston: school is another.

96

00:03:28,322 --> 00:03:32,591

Tom Brooke: I mean she constantly amazes me And that's

97

00:03:32,691 --> 00:03:35,382

Tom Brooke: one of the things that she seems to be okay

98

00:03:35,422 --> 00:03:35,622

Tom Brooke: with.

99

00:03:36,746 --> 00:03:37,970

Tom Brooke: I mean we haven't given her much of an

100

00:03:38,030 --> 00:03:38,271

Tom Brooke: option.

101

00:03:39,340 --> 00:03:40,944

Tom Brooke: Well, kids are kids are adaptable

102

00:03:41,125 --> 00:03:42,668

Tom Brooke: especially during COVID, i think.

103

00:03:42,769 --> 00:03:46,345

Marc Preston: I think last few years kids have had to

104

00:03:46,586 --> 00:03:46,968

Marc Preston: adapt.

105

00:03:47,209 --> 00:03:48,715

Marc Preston: I mean that we would honestly I think

106

00:03:48,736 --> 00:03:51,303

Marc Preston: they've done a better job than then.

107

00:03:51,323 --> 00:03:53,487

Marc Preston: We have to some degree Yeah.

108

00:03:53,507 --> 00:03:54,348

Tom Brooke: I agree.

109

00:03:55,270 --> 00:03:56,472

Marc Preston: I kind of want to go to something as a

110

00:03:56,532 --> 00:03:57,634

Marc Preston: former radio guy.

111

00:03:58,020 --> 00:04:00,987

Marc Preston: I got to say I am so envious that you're in

112

00:04:01,027 --> 00:04:06,319

Marc Preston: pirate radio, that that is a young okay, i

113

00:04:06,339 --> 00:04:07,885

Marc Preston: think I was seven years old wanted to do

114

00:04:07,965 --> 00:04:10,817

Marc Preston: radio And I and I, you know, listened to

115

00:04:10,857 --> 00:04:12,923

Marc Preston: kind of the stories of the old guys And I

116

00:04:12,983 --> 00:04:16,613

Marc Preston: kind of started and came up with I got I

117

00:04:16,653 --> 00:04:19,535

Marc Preston: was pretty successful pretty early on And I

118

00:04:19,649 --> 00:04:21,703

Marc Preston: had a syndicated show and I was like only

119

00:04:21,817 --> 00:04:24,437

Marc Preston: 20 or 21, my first one, and but I was

120

00:04:24,551 --> 00:04:27,167

Marc Preston: working with guys who worked in the 70s and

121

00:04:27,187 --> 00:04:29,937

Marc Preston: the 80s and some in the 60s, and boy, the

122

00:04:29,977 --> 00:04:31,524

Marc Preston: stories they would tell and it's almost

123

00:04:31,564 --> 00:04:33,193

Marc Preston: like a little snapshot and people would

124

00:04:33,213 --> 00:04:33,937

Marc Preston: look at pirate rating.

125

00:04:33,957 --> 00:04:34,929

Marc Preston: Go, that's, that's my luck.

126

00:04:35,016 --> 00:04:36,626

Marc Preston: Yeah, that didn't really happen, like that

127

00:04:36,714 --> 00:04:37,718

Marc Preston: kind of stuff happened.

128

00:04:37,805 --> 00:04:41,195

Marc Preston: But to be on a set with that cast, you know,

129

00:04:41,275 --> 00:04:43,376

Marc Preston: make playing, make believe that had to been

130

00:04:43,416 --> 00:04:44,337

Marc Preston: just a blast.

131

00:04:44,537 --> 00:04:45,718

Tom Brooke: Yeah, It's the.

132

00:04:46,040 --> 00:04:47,844

Tom Brooke: It's the first time, and only time, I've

133

00:04:47,864 --> 00:04:51,332

Tom Brooke: got a car and a speed boat to work, Because

134

00:04:51,432 --> 00:04:53,402

Tom Brooke: they bought a boat.

135

00:04:53,642 --> 00:04:54,505

Tom Brooke: You know the ship.

136

00:04:54,545 --> 00:04:56,973

Tom Brooke: They've, they've brought it down from

137

00:04:57,013 --> 00:04:59,964

Tom Brooke: Scotland and they just parked it off the

138

00:04:59,985 --> 00:05:01,513

Tom Brooke: South, the South coast of England.

139

00:05:01,653 --> 00:05:02,860

Marc Preston: I'm very curious did they shoot the

140

00:05:03,020 --> 00:05:05,007

Marc Preston: interiors in the boat or did they do that

141

00:05:05,048 --> 00:05:05,870

Marc Preston: on a soundstage?

142

00:05:06,914 --> 00:05:07,536

Tom Brooke: A bit of both.

143

00:05:07,998 --> 00:05:09,502

Marc Preston: But Philip Seymour Hoffman I got to say

144

00:05:09,602 --> 00:05:10,224

Marc Preston: that is.

145

00:05:10,745 --> 00:05:12,429

Marc Preston: I always wanted to work with that kind of a

146

00:05:12,469 --> 00:05:15,767

Marc Preston: character in my career And but as an actor

147

00:05:16,168 --> 00:05:18,096

Marc Preston: well, i just just you know, just kind of

148

00:05:18,116 --> 00:05:18,799

Marc Preston: before we get into it.

149

00:05:18,819 --> 00:05:20,547

Marc Preston: I'm just curious, what was it like working

150

00:05:20,627 --> 00:05:21,451

Marc Preston: on that, that movie?

151

00:05:21,491 --> 00:05:23,280

Marc Preston: Because that's for me just like a little

152

00:05:23,441 --> 00:05:23,722

Marc Preston: gem.

153

00:05:23,762 --> 00:05:25,711

Marc Preston: If it ever comes on, i just watch it, no

154

00:05:25,731 --> 00:05:27,659

Marc Preston: matter where I find it is just one of those

155

00:05:27,699 --> 00:05:27,840

Marc Preston: movies.

156

00:05:27,980 --> 00:05:28,763

Tom Brooke: Oh, i've got them.

157

00:05:29,003 --> 00:05:29,765

Tom Brooke: Oh, how lovely.

158

00:05:29,846 --> 00:05:30,989

Tom Brooke: That's so nice to hear.

159

00:05:32,513 --> 00:05:33,556

Tom Brooke: Yeah, i've got those two.

160

00:05:33,576 --> 00:05:38,605

Tom Brooke: He, i mean the thing the thing I remember

161

00:05:38,625 --> 00:05:42,591

Tom Brooke: about him was was the first day, i remember,

162

00:05:44,274 --> 00:05:46,322

Tom Brooke: coming into the studio and he was just

163

00:05:46,402 --> 00:05:50,290

Tom Brooke: there And his first scene was him at the

164

00:05:50,331 --> 00:05:54,463

Tom Brooke: microphone commiserating about the fact

165

00:05:54,503 --> 00:05:56,970

Tom Brooke: that they were all going to be locked down

166

00:05:57,010 --> 00:05:57,652

Tom Brooke: by the government.

167

00:05:57,853 --> 00:06:01,505

Tom Brooke: And I said, are you nervous?

168

00:06:02,930 --> 00:06:04,816

Tom Brooke: Because I just couldn't help it Like I just

169

00:06:04,857 --> 00:06:05,780

Tom Brooke: thought that he said no.

170

00:06:06,221 --> 00:06:07,264

Tom Brooke: He said, of course I am.

171

00:06:07,344 --> 00:06:08,106

Tom Brooke: You must be joking.

172

00:06:09,168 --> 00:06:10,552

Tom Brooke: It doesn't ever get any easier.

173

00:06:10,572 --> 00:06:15,085

Tom Brooke: I thought, god Blimey, even you, even you,

174

00:06:16,667 --> 00:06:20,573

Tom Brooke: but I don't know, i just he was, he was,

175

00:06:20,673 --> 00:06:23,969

Tom Brooke: he's so good in that film And you know,

176

00:06:24,010 --> 00:06:25,597

Tom Brooke: getting the chance to watch it happen right

177

00:06:25,617 --> 00:06:28,164

Tom Brooke: in front of you is it's, it's really

178

00:06:28,204 --> 00:06:28,625

Tom Brooke: special.

179

00:06:28,825 --> 00:06:32,132

Tom Brooke: I mean, you ask about how it was when we

180

00:06:32,172 --> 00:06:36,062

Tom Brooke: were filming it and we had we sort of had

181

00:06:36,102 --> 00:06:39,171

Tom Brooke: carte blanche to do whatever, whatever we

182

00:06:39,211 --> 00:06:42,881

Tom Brooke: wanted really, and and there is a cut

183

00:06:43,102 --> 00:06:45,408

Tom Brooke: somewhere out there that's five and a half

184

00:06:45,568 --> 00:06:48,557

Tom Brooke: hours long- No, kidding really.

185

00:06:48,737 --> 00:06:51,166

Marc Preston: Yeah, I mean, the first cut was a long Is

186

00:06:51,266 --> 00:06:53,937

Marc Preston: it a, a, a, actual, a actual cut together

187

00:06:53,977 --> 00:06:55,081

Marc Preston: footage, Or is it just like?

188

00:06:55,222 --> 00:06:56,527

Tom Brooke: outtakes and things like that.

189

00:06:56,707 --> 00:06:59,317

Tom Brooke: No, it's footage, it's, it's really Yeah,

190

00:06:59,337 --> 00:07:02,225

Tom Brooke: because he kept saying like, okay, great,

191

00:07:02,265 --> 00:07:04,510

Tom Brooke: yeah, no, let's have that and and do that

192

00:07:04,731 --> 00:07:05,031

Tom Brooke: again.

193

00:07:05,072 --> 00:07:09,968

Tom Brooke: That's brilliant, and and so I think by the

194

00:07:10,028 --> 00:07:12,355

Tom Brooke: end of it he had so much footage because he

195

00:07:12,375 --> 00:07:15,404

Tom Brooke: just everyone was offering stuff up and he

196

00:07:15,444 --> 00:07:18,294

Tom Brooke: seemed really I don't know, he seemed like

197

00:07:18,314 --> 00:07:19,779

Tom Brooke: he was really really up for it.

198

00:07:19,840 --> 00:07:22,368

Marc Preston: So I mean just just the, just the casting

199

00:07:22,428 --> 00:07:22,709

Marc Preston: on that.

200

00:07:22,729 --> 00:07:23,211

Marc Preston: I mean just.

201

00:07:23,492 --> 00:07:26,141

Marc Preston: I mean, you know, january Jones and then

202

00:07:26,161 --> 00:07:28,027

Marc Preston: Kenneth Brenna, january.

203

00:07:28,047 --> 00:07:29,471

Tom Brooke: Jones pops up, doesn't she?

204

00:07:29,551 --> 00:07:30,073

Tom Brooke: My God?

205

00:07:30,093 --> 00:07:31,317

Tom Brooke: Yeah, that was huge.

206

00:07:31,658 --> 00:07:33,265

Marc Preston: The cast was just so perfect.

207

00:07:33,305 --> 00:07:34,933

Marc Preston: And then I'm thinking, you know, you know,

208

00:07:34,973 --> 00:07:36,621

Marc Preston: chris O'Dowd still ranks up there in the

209

00:07:36,661 --> 00:07:38,128

Marc Preston: top five guys I want to sit down, have a

210

00:07:38,168 --> 00:07:39,917

Marc Preston: beer with, so you know, or a pint, i'm

211

00:07:39,957 --> 00:07:41,321

Marc Preston: sorry, i say a proper.

212

00:07:41,522 --> 00:07:42,644

Tom Brooke: Yes, yes, you have to.

213

00:07:43,405 --> 00:07:48,353

Tom Brooke: Or again I remember Bill Nye being being

214

00:07:48,433 --> 00:07:49,375

Tom Brooke: very, very sweet.

215

00:07:49,600 --> 00:07:54,333

Tom Brooke: We had a chat on board the boat one day in

216

00:07:54,373 --> 00:07:55,998

Tom Brooke: between takes about what our different

217

00:07:56,018 --> 00:07:58,481

Tom Brooke: books were that we were reading in our

218

00:07:58,521 --> 00:08:02,303

Tom Brooke: downtime And he sounded really interesting,

219

00:08:02,382 --> 00:08:06,542

Tom Brooke: and when I got back to the trailer that

220

00:08:06,602 --> 00:08:09,953

Tom Brooke: night There was a copy of it waiting for me.

221

00:08:10,566 --> 00:08:11,911

Marc Preston: But no, i mean, it's so fun when people

222

00:08:11,931 --> 00:08:13,692

Marc Preston: want to share their their kind of their

223

00:08:13,732 --> 00:08:15,463

Marc Preston: special thing with you you know like

224

00:08:15,484 --> 00:08:17,672

Marc Preston: they're people do that with books a lot.

225

00:08:18,186 --> 00:08:20,153

Marc Preston: For me it's kind of movies and TV shows.

226

00:08:21,690 --> 00:08:23,145

Marc Preston: I know I should be a bigger reader.

227

00:08:23,287 --> 00:08:24,345

Marc Preston: I'm just not right now.

228

00:08:24,687 --> 00:08:25,110

Marc Preston: I know I.

229

00:08:25,554 --> 00:08:27,044

Marc Preston: you know, raising three kids is like you

230

00:08:27,064 --> 00:08:27,145

Marc Preston: know.

231

00:08:27,567 --> 00:08:29,738

Marc Preston: I sit down to finally open up the book at

232

00:08:29,838 --> 00:08:30,039

Marc Preston: night.

233

00:08:30,100 --> 00:08:31,145

Marc Preston: Three seconds later I'm asleep.

234

00:08:31,246 --> 00:08:34,582

Marc Preston: It's like it's like it's like ambient or

235

00:08:34,622 --> 00:08:36,252

Marc Preston: something you know, but.

236

00:08:36,615 --> 00:08:38,105

Marc Preston: but just kind of go a little origin story

237

00:08:38,286 --> 00:08:38,406

Marc Preston: Now.

238

00:08:38,466 --> 00:08:40,171

Marc Preston: you, you know where in the UK did you grow

239

00:08:40,271 --> 00:08:40,352

Marc Preston: up?

240

00:08:41,695 --> 00:08:41,996

Tom Brooke: London.

241

00:08:43,085 --> 00:08:45,454

Tom Brooke: I grew up in London and I'm still in London,

242

00:08:47,665 --> 00:08:51,173

Tom Brooke: Took as many opportunities to to get out

243

00:08:51,253 --> 00:08:53,719

Tom Brooke: and see the country as much as possible,

244

00:08:54,626 --> 00:08:55,470

Tom Brooke: But but that's me.

245

00:08:55,686 --> 00:08:56,510

Tom Brooke: Yeah, that's my base.

246

00:08:56,808 --> 00:08:58,064

Marc Preston: Now, is that where your people are from?

247

00:08:58,265 --> 00:08:59,911

Marc Preston: Is your, are your folks from there, or did

248

00:08:59,931 --> 00:09:00,232

Marc Preston: they?

249

00:09:00,292 --> 00:09:00,553

Marc Preston: Yeah?

250

00:09:01,745 --> 00:09:02,346

Tom Brooke: Well they're.

251

00:09:02,987 --> 00:09:07,775

Tom Brooke: They're from England, but my mom grew up on

252

00:09:07,795 --> 00:09:10,179

Tom Brooke: the South Coast and her family are still

253

00:09:10,339 --> 00:09:10,860

Tom Brooke: around there.

254

00:09:12,046 --> 00:09:13,031

Tom Brooke: They moved around a bit.

255

00:09:13,685 --> 00:09:18,615

Tom Brooke: They ran pubs and my dad's dad was in the

256

00:09:18,755 --> 00:09:20,639

Tom Brooke: army, so they moved around a bit as well.

257

00:09:21,506 --> 00:09:25,302

Tom Brooke: So, but mom and dad met at university in

258

00:09:25,322 --> 00:09:25,945

Tom Brooke: Kings in London.

259

00:09:27,230 --> 00:09:29,118

Marc Preston: Well, i did see your father is.

260

00:09:29,600 --> 00:09:32,631

Marc Preston: he's also in the business, He's an actor,

261

00:09:32,711 --> 00:09:34,396

Marc Preston: and I always find that tremendously

262

00:09:34,476 --> 00:09:37,044

Marc Preston: interesting to find out whether or not I

263

00:09:37,064 --> 00:09:40,977

Marc Preston: look like a Tom Hanks or, you know, in

264

00:09:40,997 --> 00:09:42,643

Marc Preston: colonings you know all these other folks

265

00:09:42,683 --> 00:09:45,580

Marc Preston: that was their encouragement like, yes, go

266

00:09:45,600 --> 00:09:46,225

Marc Preston: ahead and do this thing.

267

00:09:47,430 --> 00:09:49,178

Marc Preston: You know, if you got passion for, go for it.

268

00:09:49,299 --> 00:09:50,444

Marc Preston: Or was their pushback, because I know the

269

00:09:50,464 --> 00:09:52,695

Marc Preston: people that I know are like God.

270

00:09:52,735 --> 00:09:54,382

Marc Preston: I don't know if I want my kid to do this.

271

00:09:54,422 --> 00:09:57,090

Marc Preston: You know, this is a, this is definitely a

272

00:09:57,130 --> 00:09:59,355

Marc Preston: lifestyle that you really need to want to

273

00:09:59,395 --> 00:09:59,615

Marc Preston: do it.

274

00:09:59,635 --> 00:10:01,827

Marc Preston: Yeah, was there encouragement?

275

00:10:01,867 --> 00:10:04,273

Marc Preston: or did he try to discourage you from from

276

00:10:04,393 --> 00:10:06,858

Marc Preston: following the thespianic arts?

277

00:10:07,746 --> 00:10:09,512

Tom Brooke: He was definitely encouraging.

278

00:10:10,066 --> 00:10:12,896

Tom Brooke: He was, he was so impressive in that way,

279

00:10:12,936 --> 00:10:15,104

Tom Brooke: especially, like you say, like raising,

280

00:10:15,264 --> 00:10:19,294

Tom Brooke: raising your own you sort of go wow thanks,

281

00:10:20,197 --> 00:10:22,923

Tom Brooke: because he never he never discouraged me,

282

00:10:22,963 --> 00:10:25,031

Tom Brooke: but he always made it clear that it was a

283

00:10:25,092 --> 00:10:27,752

Tom Brooke: job You had to work really hard at it.

284

00:10:29,945 --> 00:10:33,316

Tom Brooke: You could get better at it if you wanted to.

285

00:10:34,046 --> 00:10:36,656

Tom Brooke: But one of the things that I think he was

286

00:10:36,716 --> 00:10:38,544

Tom Brooke: very clear about and I could see firsthand,

287

00:10:38,624 --> 00:10:40,932

Tom Brooke: was that it was to a certain extent in the

288

00:10:40,972 --> 00:10:44,696

Tom Brooke: lap of the gods, so if you were prepared to

289

00:10:44,836 --> 00:10:47,225

Tom Brooke: acknowledge and accept all of that, go for

290

00:10:47,245 --> 00:10:47,285

Tom Brooke: it.

291

00:10:48,228 --> 00:10:51,738

Tom Brooke: That seemed to just transform into sort of,

292

00:10:52,500 --> 00:10:54,265

Tom Brooke: basically, support for me, right?

293

00:10:54,850 --> 00:10:56,425

Marc Preston: Well, what was the genesis of your interest?

294

00:10:56,645 --> 00:10:58,450

Marc Preston: Were you just watching him, or was it that

295

00:10:58,470 --> 00:11:01,296

Marc Preston: you're watching movies or stage work and

296

00:11:01,316 --> 00:11:02,058

Marc Preston: that's what grabbed you?

297

00:11:04,248 --> 00:11:06,355

Tom Brooke: He started me off in the theater early.

298

00:11:06,767 --> 00:11:09,504

Tom Brooke: He was always taking me to things They both

299

00:11:09,524 --> 00:11:12,951

Tom Brooke: were, and I guess occasionally I'd go

300

00:11:13,032 --> 00:11:15,015

Tom Brooke: backstage, maybe if we'd gone to see some

301

00:11:15,055 --> 00:11:19,311

Tom Brooke: Friends of There's, but it was.

302

00:11:20,013 --> 00:11:22,007

Tom Brooke: I used to love movies, really I used to

303

00:11:22,107 --> 00:11:25,799

Tom Brooke: love movies, and it was a really magical

304

00:11:27,123 --> 00:11:27,564

Tom Brooke: time.

305

00:11:27,585 --> 00:11:29,732

Tom Brooke: Then, you know, it was when movies came out

306

00:11:29,772 --> 00:11:30,314

Tom Brooke: in America.

307

00:11:30,414 --> 00:11:34,310

Tom Brooke: First You had to wait or you had to quiz

308

00:11:34,350 --> 00:11:36,414

Tom Brooke: everybody that had come back from a holiday

309

00:11:36,454 --> 00:11:37,075

Tom Brooke: in the States.

310

00:11:37,396 --> 00:11:37,957

Tom Brooke: What did you see?

311

00:11:37,997 --> 00:11:38,598

Tom Brooke: What did you see?

312

00:11:39,560 --> 00:11:40,502

Tom Brooke: What did you see on the plane?

313

00:11:41,927 --> 00:11:44,132

Tom Brooke: Because these movies you'd have to wait six

314

00:11:44,173 --> 00:11:48,769

Tom Brooke: months before they came out in England, and

315

00:11:48,829 --> 00:11:52,244

Tom Brooke: so all of that stuff I found really, really

316

00:11:52,264 --> 00:11:52,585

Tom Brooke: sort of enticing.

317

00:11:53,548 --> 00:11:56,197

Tom Brooke: But it was a teacher that just said you

318

00:11:56,217 --> 00:11:57,722

Tom Brooke: should audition for this school play And I

319

00:11:57,762 --> 00:12:01,632

Tom Brooke: did And I got the part and my voice broke

320

00:12:01,713 --> 00:12:04,657

Tom Brooke: on stage and I got a laugh out of it And I

321

00:12:04,678 --> 00:12:05,225

Tom Brooke: thought, well, it's memorable.

322

00:12:06,156 --> 00:12:09,334

Marc Preston: Now it's a story to the tell, Yeah, But at

323

00:12:09,375 --> 00:12:11,182

Marc Preston: that age it's horrifying, probably.

324

00:12:11,202 --> 00:12:12,025

Marc Preston: You know, and having that much attention,

325

00:12:13,452 --> 00:12:15,783

Marc Preston: you know adolescents can be kind of awkward

326

00:12:15,803 --> 00:12:16,145

Marc Preston: enough, you know.

327

00:12:17,336 --> 00:12:22,038

Tom Brooke: No, I know what you mean, But actually it

328

00:12:22,078 --> 00:12:22,199

Tom Brooke: was.

329

00:12:22,440 --> 00:12:26,433

Tom Brooke: I was surprisingly comfortable on stage And

330

00:12:26,493 --> 00:12:29,245

Tom Brooke: I remember not feeling anxious on stage.

331

00:12:30,651 --> 00:12:32,782

Tom Brooke: Regardless of where else in my life I was

332

00:12:32,802 --> 00:12:33,184

Tom Brooke: feeling anxious.

333

00:12:33,204 --> 00:12:34,413

Tom Brooke: At the time On stage I didn't feel anxious.

334

00:12:36,026 --> 00:12:38,351

Tom Brooke: I didn't feel anxious because probably

335

00:12:38,411 --> 00:12:40,256

Tom Brooke: because of Dad, you know, I'd done so much

336

00:12:40,336 --> 00:12:43,275

Tom Brooke: work on the part And I'd learned the lines

337

00:12:43,798 --> 00:12:46,869

Tom Brooke: to within an inch in my life, And so by

338

00:12:46,910 --> 00:12:48,313

Tom Brooke: that point I was really interested in just

339

00:12:48,333 --> 00:12:50,438

Tom Brooke: like showing them what I'd done with the

340

00:12:51,807 --> 00:12:53,285

Tom Brooke: words, like the choices I'd made.

341

00:12:53,486 --> 00:12:55,592

Tom Brooke: So that hasn't really changed, to be honest.

342

00:13:03,093 --> 00:13:05,039

Marc Preston: When you started, was there an end game

343

00:13:05,079 --> 00:13:07,044

Marc Preston: going I want to be on camera, i want to do

344

00:13:07,064 --> 00:13:09,911

Marc Preston: the movie thing or were you just just in it

345

00:13:09,931 --> 00:13:11,255

Marc Preston: and just kind of see where it takes you?

346

00:13:11,515 --> 00:13:14,212

Marc Preston: you know, because you get stage people, you

347

00:13:14,233 --> 00:13:16,904

Marc Preston: get the folks who want to be on camera.

348

00:13:16,924 --> 00:13:18,108

Marc Preston: You know, when they're young, you know kind

349

00:13:18,148 --> 00:13:18,911

Marc Preston: of the aspiration.

350

00:13:19,645 --> 00:13:20,809

Marc Preston: Did you have any specific goals?

351

00:13:23,086 --> 00:13:24,611

Tom Brooke: I had a few I did.

352

00:13:26,467 --> 00:13:28,771

Tom Brooke: Amazingly I managed to tick almost all of

353

00:13:28,811 --> 00:13:33,498

Tom Brooke: them off within I don't know what the first

354

00:13:34,625 --> 00:13:35,909

Tom Brooke: seven or eight years of doing it.

355

00:13:38,325 --> 00:13:40,691

Tom Brooke: There are a few that are ongoing, but I

356

00:13:40,731 --> 00:13:42,675

Tom Brooke: wanted to make sure that I played a lead in

357

00:13:42,735 --> 00:13:46,612

Tom Brooke: every theatre in London that was on my list.

358

00:13:49,466 --> 00:13:52,512

Tom Brooke: I wanted it to start early and show them

359

00:13:52,953 --> 00:13:54,155

Tom Brooke: that I could do it all.

360

00:13:56,085 --> 00:13:59,291

Tom Brooke: And I remember Dad talking to me about that

361

00:13:59,311 --> 00:14:03,759

Tom Brooke: a lot and saying if you have a fair wind,

362

00:14:03,965 --> 00:14:04,849

Tom Brooke: you can do a play.

363

00:14:05,425 --> 00:14:07,532

Tom Brooke: If the play goes well, you can use that

364

00:14:07,612 --> 00:14:11,143

Tom Brooke: success to jump into maybe a bit of telly

365

00:14:11,303 --> 00:14:13,725

Tom Brooke: or maybe a little bit in a movie And then

366

00:14:13,745 --> 00:14:15,531

Tom Brooke: if that does well, you can use that and you

367

00:14:15,571 --> 00:14:16,835

Tom Brooke: can jump to another one.

368

00:14:17,506 --> 00:14:19,510

Tom Brooke: He said, like you know, with a good agent

369

00:14:20,572 --> 00:14:23,657

Tom Brooke: that's as good a game plan as you can have

370

00:14:23,758 --> 00:14:24,038

Tom Brooke: really.

371

00:14:25,446 --> 00:14:28,433

Tom Brooke: So early on I made sure I did a little bit

372

00:14:28,473 --> 00:14:30,818

Tom Brooke: of everything, just as a kind of calling

373

00:14:30,858 --> 00:14:31,158

Tom Brooke: card.

374

00:14:32,469 --> 00:14:33,673

Marc Preston: When you were growing up, though, what were

375

00:14:33,713 --> 00:14:34,215

Marc Preston: you watching?

376

00:14:34,245 --> 00:14:35,709

Marc Preston: Because you mentioned the thing about how

377

00:14:35,810 --> 00:14:37,736

Marc Preston: movies get released and how you know the

378

00:14:37,785 --> 00:14:38,510

Marc Preston: folks in the UK.

379

00:14:38,591 --> 00:14:40,304

Marc Preston: You know you just kind of behind the eight

380

00:14:40,344 --> 00:14:41,851

Marc Preston: ball, and I was wondering why they did that.

381

00:14:41,905 --> 00:14:42,969

Marc Preston: I'm like, why don't they just release it at

382

00:14:43,009 --> 00:14:43,792

Marc Preston: the same time everywhere?

383

00:14:44,465 --> 00:14:45,711

Marc Preston: But what were you watching when you were a

384

00:14:45,751 --> 00:14:45,931

Marc Preston: kid?

385

00:14:46,085 --> 00:14:47,469

Marc Preston: What was kind of grabbing your attention?

386

00:14:48,071 --> 00:14:49,555

Marc Preston: stuff shot in the UK or US.

387

00:14:51,050 --> 00:14:52,114

Tom Brooke: What was I growing up with?

388

00:14:52,185 --> 00:14:53,027

Tom Brooke: I was growing up with.

389

00:14:54,830 --> 00:14:56,494

Tom Brooke: I was growing up with stuff that dad was in,

390

00:14:59,245 --> 00:15:03,627

Tom Brooke: so I was watching bits and pieces His his,

391

00:15:03,929 --> 00:15:05,633

Tom Brooke: his telly career.

392

00:15:05,935 --> 00:15:09,713

Tom Brooke: He stopped doing theater in sort of in the

393

00:15:10,015 --> 00:15:13,631

Tom Brooke: 80s and carried on just with telly and film,

394

00:15:14,525 --> 00:15:16,210

Tom Brooke: so I'd watched stuff that he was in.

395

00:15:17,745 --> 00:15:18,990

Tom Brooke: Batman was huge for me.

396

00:15:19,707 --> 00:15:23,120

Tom Brooke: I'd watched Adam West religiously every

397

00:15:23,200 --> 00:15:24,365

Tom Brooke: single Saturday morning.

398

00:15:24,606 --> 00:15:26,631

Marc Preston: So if you're talking about the OG Batman,

399

00:15:26,651 --> 00:15:26,871

Marc Preston: yeah.

400

00:15:26,891 --> 00:15:27,974

Tom Brooke: Yeah, yeah.

401

00:15:29,405 --> 00:15:32,532

Tom Brooke: And Bert Ward, burgess, meredith, all these

402

00:15:32,572 --> 00:15:34,677

Tom Brooke: people, he was doing some price.

403

00:15:34,865 --> 00:15:36,429

Tom Brooke: You look back and go, wow, they were in

404

00:15:36,470 --> 00:15:40,110

Tom Brooke: that, wow, but I don't know really.

405

00:15:40,185 --> 00:15:42,830

Tom Brooke: It was just it was telly and then it was.

406

00:15:43,552 --> 00:15:45,696

Tom Brooke: It was any movies that were a big deal.

407

00:15:47,605 --> 00:15:48,288

Tom Brooke: I remember the first.

408

00:15:48,308 --> 00:15:49,352

Tom Brooke: Batman was huge.

409

00:15:49,965 --> 00:15:51,428

Tom Brooke: Dad took me to the barbecue and we watched

410

00:15:51,448 --> 00:15:51,668

00:16:16,613 --> 00:16:18,489

Marc Preston: I love Michael Keaton So I'll say he's my

424

00:16:18,549 --> 00:16:18,750

Marc Preston: guy.

425

00:16:19,286 --> 00:16:20,612

Tom Brooke: Did you see him in dope sick?

426

00:16:20,925 --> 00:16:22,010

Marc Preston: I saw that just now.

427

00:16:22,325 --> 00:16:23,830

Marc Preston: You know that is that's.

428

00:16:24,051 --> 00:16:25,446

Marc Preston: Thank you for reminding me I've gone

Marc Preston: going.

432

00:16:30,972 --> 00:16:31,815

Marc Preston: This is what I got to watch.

433

00:16:31,905 --> 00:16:34,368

Marc Preston: I so want to watch that, But everything

434

00:16:34,388 --> 00:16:35,814

Marc Preston: he's he's one of those few guys he's in.

435

00:16:35,925 --> 00:16:37,453

Marc Preston: No matter what he's in, i'm going to see it.

436

00:16:37,815 --> 00:16:39,885

Tom Brooke: Yeah, and he's really special, isn't he?

437

00:16:39,965 --> 00:16:40,948

Tom Brooke: He's one of those ones.

438

00:16:41,791 --> 00:16:42,373

Marc Preston: Indeed, indeed.

439

00:16:43,425 --> 00:16:44,268

Marc Preston: Now, real quick, about your mother.

440

00:16:44,288 --> 00:16:45,713

Marc Preston: was she an actor, or is she an actor as

441

00:16:45,773 --> 00:16:45,974

Marc Preston: well?

442

00:16:46,626 --> 00:16:50,225

Tom Brooke: No, she, she acted at school and at uni She

443

00:16:50,245 --> 00:16:53,911

Tom Brooke: went into teaching and quite early on she

444

00:16:53,951 --> 00:16:58,179

Tom Brooke: got noticed for being management material

445

00:16:58,865 --> 00:17:02,074

Tom Brooke: and then she went down that direction and

446

00:17:03,779 --> 00:17:05,684

Tom Brooke: she, she was a vice principal of a sixth

447

00:17:05,725 --> 00:17:09,952

Tom Brooke: form college and then she took early

448

00:17:09,992 --> 00:17:12,938

Tom Brooke: retirement and she passed last year.

449

00:17:12,978 --> 00:17:18,784

Tom Brooke: But she, just, she just got her PhD Right,

450

00:17:18,825 --> 00:17:21,714

Tom Brooke: yeah, just before the the illness took her.

451

00:17:22,105 --> 00:17:26,011

Tom Brooke: So she was, yeah, she was very special,

452

00:17:26,371 --> 00:17:28,174

Tom Brooke: very, very special.

453

00:17:28,194 --> 00:17:29,156

Marc Preston: My condolences on that.

454

00:17:29,196 --> 00:17:30,338

Tom Brooke: Yeah, thank you, thank you.

455

00:17:32,406 --> 00:17:34,633

Marc Preston: You know, you know my, my, my, even my

456

00:17:34,673 --> 00:17:37,442

Marc Preston: father passed from COVID back.

457

00:17:37,963 --> 00:17:38,224

Tom Brooke: Oh.

458

00:17:38,284 --> 00:17:38,465

Marc Preston: God.

459

00:17:39,267 --> 00:17:40,169

Marc Preston: But we've kind of went.

460

00:17:40,349 --> 00:17:43,015

Marc Preston: We kind of went into this weird the last

461

00:17:43,095 --> 00:17:43,757

Marc Preston: few years.

462

00:17:43,897 --> 00:17:45,893

Marc Preston: It's just it was it's just almost like I

463

00:17:45,934 --> 00:17:47,683

Marc Preston: feel like coming out of a fog, like okay,

464

00:17:47,744 --> 00:17:49,528

Marc Preston: now we're kind of back to a little bit more

465

00:17:49,588 --> 00:17:52,534

Marc Preston: normal, you know, and Was it COVID?

466

00:17:52,594 --> 00:17:53,336

Tom Brooke: Was it COVID Yeah?

467

00:17:53,356 --> 00:17:53,496

Marc Preston: Yeah.

468

00:17:55,165 --> 00:17:56,749

Tom Brooke: And, but yeah, i mean, you know no no

469

00:17:56,790 --> 00:17:58,454

Tom Brooke: matter how oh my, i appreciate it.

470

00:17:58,474 --> 00:18:00,308

Marc Preston: Yeah, no matter how you lose a parent, it's,

471

00:18:00,810 --> 00:18:01,091

Marc Preston: it's, it's.

472

00:18:01,131 --> 00:18:02,767

Marc Preston: it's never easy, it's definitely your.

473

00:18:02,887 --> 00:18:04,631

Marc Preston: it's you remind your life as a continual

474

00:18:04,671 --> 00:18:05,212

Marc Preston: education.

475

00:18:05,753 --> 00:18:06,755

Tom Brooke: Yeah, yeah.

476

00:18:06,775 --> 00:18:10,870

Marc Preston: Yeah, with your father doing this, and then

477

00:18:10,910 --> 00:18:13,755

Marc Preston: you ended up marrying someone who does this

478

00:18:13,836 --> 00:18:14,677

Marc Preston: as well, you know.

479

00:18:15,766 --> 00:18:17,707

Marc Preston: So I get a question When you were having

480

00:18:17,787 --> 00:18:20,013

Marc Preston: family dinners, is there a rule of no

481

00:18:20,093 --> 00:18:20,915

Marc Preston: talking shop?

482

00:18:21,336 --> 00:18:22,607

Tom Brooke: or is that something that's a frequent

483

00:18:22,628 --> 00:18:23,029

Tom Brooke: topic?

484

00:18:23,130 --> 00:18:23,391

Tom Brooke: you know?

485

00:18:23,945 --> 00:18:25,790

Tom Brooke: I feel like there should have been.

486

00:18:27,895 --> 00:18:28,496

Tom Brooke: There wasn't.

487

00:18:30,268 --> 00:18:31,952

Tom Brooke: My mom was very understanding.

488

00:18:34,545 --> 00:18:38,795

Tom Brooke: My dad he loves to tell stories and he's

489

00:18:38,835 --> 00:18:39,697

Tom Brooke: got some great ones.

490

00:18:39,965 --> 00:18:41,408

Tom Brooke: He did a scene with Brando, you know.

491

00:18:41,708 --> 00:18:42,710

Marc Preston: Really No kidding.

492

00:18:42,731 --> 00:18:44,634

Tom Brooke: Yeah, he did a scene with Brando.

493

00:18:44,995 --> 00:18:45,135

Marc Preston: What?

494

00:18:45,175 --> 00:18:45,997

Marc Preston: what film was that in?

495

00:18:46,845 --> 00:18:49,452

Tom Brooke: A dry white season with Donald Sutherland

496

00:18:49,512 --> 00:18:56,593

Tom Brooke: as well, and he, yeah, we, it's.

497

00:18:56,953 --> 00:18:57,053

Tom Brooke: It's.

498

00:18:57,294 --> 00:18:59,637

Tom Brooke: It's funny because mom never talked about

499

00:18:59,678 --> 00:19:02,389

Tom Brooke: her work And I and I've always kind of

500

00:19:02,429 --> 00:19:05,021

Tom Brooke: wondered whether how much of that was her

501

00:19:05,101 --> 00:19:08,470

Tom Brooke: not not wanting to or whether it was she

502

00:19:08,510 --> 00:19:11,516

Tom Brooke: didn't have the space to because because he

503

00:19:11,597 --> 00:19:14,748

Tom Brooke: was constantly anecdoting, anecdoting, but

504

00:19:16,050 --> 00:19:21,137

Tom Brooke: she it made for a very happy table either

505

00:19:21,178 --> 00:19:21,378

Tom Brooke: way.

506

00:19:23,485 --> 00:19:26,792

Tom Brooke: But but we certainly, we certainly talk

507

00:19:26,832 --> 00:19:31,762

Tom Brooke: shop, my wife and I, and dad retired

508

00:19:31,802 --> 00:19:36,651

Tom Brooke: himself about eight, 10 years ago, which

509

00:19:36,691 --> 00:19:39,916

Tom Brooke: was I haven't heard of active, an active

510

00:19:39,956 --> 00:19:43,870

Tom Brooke: retiring themselves before, which I thought

511

00:19:43,970 --> 00:19:47,293

Tom Brooke: was interesting, and he was psychologically

512

00:19:47,353 --> 00:19:48,698

Tom Brooke: definitely much better off.

513

00:19:48,758 --> 00:19:51,167

Tom Brooke: I think as a result, the, the business

514

00:19:51,187 --> 00:19:52,091

Tom Brooke: didn't retire him.

515

00:19:52,646 --> 00:19:53,168

Tom Brooke: You know what I mean.

516

00:19:54,231 --> 00:19:57,435

Marc Preston: Yeah, yeah, i think, didn't Gene Hackman

517

00:19:57,455 --> 00:19:58,544

Marc Preston: decide he just retired?

518

00:19:59,006 --> 00:20:01,753

Tom Brooke: I think yes, he retired to Santa Fe, that's

519

00:20:01,833 --> 00:20:02,134

Tom Brooke: right.

520

00:20:02,715 --> 00:20:05,892

Marc Preston: Yeah, there's some people and I there's

521

00:20:05,912 --> 00:20:07,799

Marc Preston: somebody else I heard of as thinking what,

522

00:20:09,003 --> 00:20:10,829

Marc Preston: doing this and being creative and

523

00:20:10,869 --> 00:20:11,792

Marc Preston: expressing and all that stuff.

524

00:20:13,407 --> 00:20:15,493

Marc Preston: And I wonder, how do you go stir crazy in

525

00:20:15,553 --> 00:20:16,095

Marc Preston: retirement?

526

00:20:16,276 --> 00:20:18,543

Marc Preston: or is it just freeing?

527

00:20:18,583 --> 00:20:20,711

Marc Preston: you know, after all the years of going and

528

00:20:20,852 --> 00:20:22,358

Marc Preston: doing the having the kind of routine of

529

00:20:22,418 --> 00:20:24,988

Marc Preston: what the life an actor has to live, you

530

00:20:25,048 --> 00:20:27,614

Marc Preston: know the traveling and the, you know the

531

00:20:27,915 --> 00:20:29,728

Marc Preston: industry itself, but is he enjoying

532

00:20:30,209 --> 00:20:30,992

Marc Preston: enjoying retirement?

533

00:20:31,573 --> 00:20:35,352

Tom Brooke: Yeah, i think, i think you know, after he

534

00:20:35,372 --> 00:20:37,557

Tom Brooke: said he had a very, very, very good run,

535

00:20:38,485 --> 00:20:41,835

Tom Brooke: and I feel like you know, if you're not

536

00:20:41,855 --> 00:20:45,184

Tom Brooke: getting the parts that you want, or or, or

537

00:20:45,204 --> 00:20:50,174

Tom Brooke: you feel like you you should, then you've

538

00:20:50,194 --> 00:20:53,626

Tom Brooke: got to make a decision And I think his

539

00:20:53,686 --> 00:20:55,671

Tom Brooke: decision was just you know what, let's draw

540

00:20:55,691 --> 00:20:56,032

Tom Brooke: a line.

541

00:20:57,015 --> 00:20:57,696

Tom Brooke: It's been great.

542

00:20:58,105 --> 00:21:01,973

Tom Brooke: And, you know, let's be a bit careful with

543

00:21:01,993 --> 00:21:04,438

Tom Brooke: money and I hope it, i hope it will be okay

544

00:21:04,685 --> 00:21:05,630

Tom Brooke: and touch wood so far.

545

00:21:06,907 --> 00:21:08,730

Marc Preston: Did you have any siblings growing up, or

546

00:21:08,830 --> 00:21:08,991

Marc Preston: did?

547

00:21:09,411 --> 00:21:12,397

Marc Preston: you meet me really only child here also

548

00:21:12,477 --> 00:21:12,718

Marc Preston: Yeah.

549

00:21:14,106 --> 00:21:14,888

Tom Brooke: So that's really oh, no way.

550

00:21:15,329 --> 00:21:16,732

Marc Preston: Indeed, yeah, and we're kind of a unique

551

00:21:16,752 --> 00:21:17,033

Marc Preston: tribe.

552

00:21:17,073 --> 00:21:18,816

Marc Preston: Everybody says, oh, you're spoiled, you're

553

00:21:18,856 --> 00:21:21,550

Marc Preston: only child, like oh no, no, no, no, no, no.

554

00:21:21,590 --> 00:21:21,710

Tom Brooke: It's a.

555

00:21:21,951 --> 00:21:22,913

Tom Brooke: I think I think the go on.

556

00:21:24,427 --> 00:21:25,130

Tom Brooke: Oh, no, no, no, no, go ahead.

557

00:21:25,485 --> 00:21:26,247

Tom Brooke: No, I'm just going to say.

558

00:21:27,329 --> 00:21:30,895

Tom Brooke: Quite often I hear people slagging off only

559

00:21:30,935 --> 00:21:32,458

Tom Brooke: children to to me.

560

00:21:34,910 --> 00:21:36,293

Tom Brooke: And then you know, you know, only child,

561

00:21:36,354 --> 00:21:37,557

Tom Brooke: only children from fucking up.

562

00:21:37,685 --> 00:21:40,153

Tom Brooke: You know you're like, really I'm one of

563

00:21:40,173 --> 00:21:40,334

Tom Brooke: them.

564

00:21:43,554 --> 00:21:44,317

Marc Preston: And then, well, you got to be a

565

00:21:44,357 --> 00:21:45,440

Marc Preston: self-contained unit.

566

00:21:45,541 --> 00:21:47,125

Marc Preston: You know a lot of folks, i think the ones

567

00:21:47,146 --> 00:21:48,650

Marc Preston: that Duke has spoiled a lot of times and

568

00:21:48,690 --> 00:21:48,951

Marc Preston: now it's.

569

00:21:49,232 --> 00:21:50,646

Marc Preston: You know, i will say, in my family I make

570

00:21:50,686 --> 00:21:53,388

Marc Preston: sure I don't do that, but the youngest

571

00:21:53,428 --> 00:21:55,333

Marc Preston: child a lot of times is because the oldest

572

00:21:55,513 --> 00:21:57,189

Marc Preston: ones usually catch all the heat early on.

573

00:21:57,229 --> 00:21:58,358

Marc Preston: By the time you get to the third one, the

574

00:21:58,378 --> 00:21:59,627

Marc Preston: parents like do whatever the hell you want

575

00:21:59,908 --> 00:22:03,373

Marc Preston: you know, And so but no, the only child you

576

00:22:03,393 --> 00:22:03,593

Marc Preston: get.

577

00:22:03,614 --> 00:22:04,255

Marc Preston: You get everything.

578

00:22:04,365 --> 00:22:06,009

Marc Preston: I think you, especially growing up in the

579

00:22:06,069 --> 00:22:08,755

Marc Preston: 80s, I think, as an only child, you're

580

00:22:08,796 --> 00:22:11,029

Marc Preston: probably, you know, fiercely independent.

581

00:22:11,209 --> 00:22:12,513

Marc Preston: You know, or you learn, how to be

582

00:22:12,573 --> 00:22:14,689

Marc Preston: independent, So maybe that's one advantage,

583

00:22:15,272 --> 00:22:15,553

Marc Preston: you know.

584

00:22:16,748 --> 00:22:18,586

Tom Brooke: I couldn't see an issue, i have to say,

585

00:22:18,827 --> 00:22:21,453

Tom Brooke: when I remember turn first day of secondary

586

00:22:21,493 --> 00:22:24,547

Tom Brooke: school, when I was 11, and the teacher said

587

00:22:24,607 --> 00:22:26,193

Tom Brooke: hands up, we've got brothers and sisters.

588

00:22:26,325 --> 00:22:27,548

Tom Brooke: And I was at the front of the class and I

589

00:22:27,608 --> 00:22:29,834

Tom Brooke: turned around and almost everybody had

590

00:22:29,854 --> 00:22:31,727

Tom Brooke: their hands up And that was the first time

591

00:22:31,767 --> 00:22:34,976

Tom Brooke: I thought, Oh, oh, i might be in a minority

592

00:22:35,016 --> 00:22:35,216

Tom Brooke: here.

593

00:22:35,866 --> 00:22:38,073

Tom Brooke: But, yeah, freedom, independence,

594

00:22:40,089 --> 00:22:41,366

Tom Brooke: absolutely I.

595

00:22:41,406 --> 00:22:45,094

Tom Brooke: Just one of the things that is one of the

596

00:22:45,134 --> 00:22:47,358

Tom Brooke: parents here in Boston told was we talked

597

00:22:47,825 --> 00:22:51,834

Tom Brooke: to me about we have an only child ourselves,

598

00:22:52,235 --> 00:22:52,877

Tom Brooke: and so do they.

599

00:22:53,285 --> 00:22:55,089

Tom Brooke: And he said he sent me a New York Times

600

00:22:55,149 --> 00:22:57,454

Tom Brooke: article about it.

601

00:22:57,514 --> 00:23:00,870

Tom Brooke: When it's just the three of you, they're

602

00:23:00,910 --> 00:23:02,636

Tom Brooke: more, they're a little bit more like a sort

603

00:23:02,676 --> 00:23:05,206

Tom Brooke: of young adult, in that it helps to maybe

604

00:23:05,246 --> 00:23:09,514

Tom Brooke: like include them in decision-making in

605

00:23:09,554 --> 00:23:11,600

Tom Brooke: that way, because this, this three of you,

606

00:23:13,233 --> 00:23:15,537

Tom Brooke: and I thought that sort of ranks and bells.

607

00:23:15,838 --> 00:23:17,040

Tom Brooke: So we do that very much.

608

00:23:17,241 --> 00:23:20,574

Tom Brooke: We make sure that we're all sort of on the

609

00:23:20,614 --> 00:23:23,301

Tom Brooke: same pages as a three rather than two

610

00:23:23,341 --> 00:23:23,742

Tom Brooke: parents.

611

00:23:24,431 --> 00:23:27,057

Marc Preston: You know that's a really wonderful idea and

612

00:23:27,077 --> 00:23:28,480

Marc Preston: it's something I've actually tried to do

613

00:23:28,540 --> 00:23:30,753

Marc Preston: myself is you know, of course.

614

00:23:31,074 --> 00:23:32,177

Marc Preston: You know you're the parent.

615

00:23:32,217 --> 00:23:34,332

Marc Preston: You get the tie-breaking vote, you know

616

00:23:34,352 --> 00:23:37,703

Marc Preston: naturally, but but it's nice because it

617

00:23:37,744 --> 00:23:39,429

Marc Preston: kind of, you know, i involve my kids and

618

00:23:39,469 --> 00:23:41,256

Marc Preston: even the things that think are boring, you

619

00:23:41,296 --> 00:23:44,147

Marc Preston: know, like they can come into my studio

620

00:23:44,187 --> 00:23:46,072

Marc Preston: they kind of see kind of how business runs

621

00:23:46,093 --> 00:23:49,500

Marc Preston: and all the stuff I do and and just just

622

00:23:49,560 --> 00:23:51,310

Marc Preston: it's the idea they have some agency in the

623

00:23:51,331 --> 00:23:52,516

Marc Preston: whole process, you know.

624

00:23:52,576 --> 00:23:54,264

Marc Preston: And that way, especially for girls, i think

625

00:23:54,304 --> 00:23:56,012

Marc Preston: it's even more important because you know

626

00:23:56,092 --> 00:23:59,283

Marc Preston: I'm I'm at a big girl power fan, like now

627

00:23:59,323 --> 00:24:01,029

Marc Preston: you know, you've got to know how to handle

628

00:24:01,270 --> 00:24:01,651

Marc Preston: my daughter.

629

00:24:01,992 --> 00:24:02,292

Marc Preston: She has.

630

00:24:02,313 --> 00:24:04,318

Marc Preston: She's hostessing at a restaurant now and

631

00:24:04,378 --> 00:24:05,481

Marc Preston: she's just loving it.

632

00:24:05,541 --> 00:24:06,792

Marc Preston: You know she thinks the neatest thing at

633

00:24:06,832 --> 00:24:08,838

Marc Preston: this kind of fine dining restaurant and I

634

00:24:08,878 --> 00:24:10,191

Marc Preston: said we're gonna sit down, i'm gonna show

635

00:24:10,211 --> 00:24:11,535

Marc Preston: you how to, you know, get the financial

636

00:24:11,575 --> 00:24:13,280

Marc Preston: software up and or your paychecks.

637

00:24:13,300 --> 00:24:14,212

Marc Preston: So why do I need to do that?

638

00:24:14,252 --> 00:24:16,759

Marc Preston: I was like because you need to know how to

639

00:24:16,779 --> 00:24:17,770

Marc Preston: do this so you don't have to rely on

640

00:24:17,810 --> 00:24:20,217

Marc Preston: somebody else to do it for you and control

641

00:24:20,237 --> 00:24:21,019

Marc Preston: of your own destiny.

642

00:24:21,059 --> 00:24:23,755

Marc Preston: Though she's looking at me like well, when

643

00:24:23,795 --> 00:24:24,858

Marc Preston: she looked up from her phone.

644

00:24:25,560 --> 00:24:27,848

Marc Preston: But she, but no, she's, she's a smart kid.

645

00:24:27,908 --> 00:24:29,433

Marc Preston: But but yeah, i think it's really important

646

00:24:29,453 --> 00:24:29,955

Marc Preston: to do that.

647

00:24:30,698 --> 00:24:32,946

Marc Preston: Yeah, but but she's seven.

648

00:24:32,986 --> 00:24:35,052

Marc Preston: You say she's seven years old, she's seven

649

00:24:36,014 --> 00:24:37,377

Marc Preston: how old yours, then yours?

650

00:24:38,659 --> 00:24:41,164

Tom Brooke: 19 gonna be 20 here soon.

651

00:24:41,485 --> 00:24:44,671

Marc Preston: 18 just turned 18 and almost 17, so girl

652

00:24:44,711 --> 00:24:48,239

Marc Preston: boy, girl, okay, okay oh, and a 10 year old

653

00:24:48,279 --> 00:24:49,622

Marc Preston: golden retriever can't forget him.

654

00:24:49,842 --> 00:24:54,220

Marc Preston: So you know he's in the mixed dogs we got

655

00:24:54,260 --> 00:24:54,440

Marc Preston: two.

656

00:24:54,460 --> 00:24:57,368

Tom Brooke: We got sisters you have golden's no, we.

657

00:24:57,388 --> 00:24:59,875

Tom Brooke: Their moms are wippet staff and their dad's

658

00:24:59,915 --> 00:25:03,525

Tom Brooke: a lab boxer wow, okay, so you have.

659

00:25:03,806 --> 00:25:05,752

Tom Brooke: You have a nice mix there yeah, there's

660

00:25:05,812 --> 00:25:08,440

Tom Brooke: there's a lot going on, but they yeah, oh

661

00:25:08,460 --> 00:25:10,467

Tom Brooke: my god come on, they makes a journey across

662

00:25:11,149 --> 00:25:13,074

Tom Brooke: across the Atlantic with you they made the

663

00:25:13,115 --> 00:25:16,884

Tom Brooke: journey across the Irish Sea to dog sitters

664

00:25:17,165 --> 00:25:20,175

Tom Brooke: in and on the South Coast of Ireland in

665

00:25:20,195 --> 00:25:22,565

Tom Brooke: Tipper area, and then they're there at the

666

00:25:22,605 --> 00:25:24,532

Tom Brooke: week and then at the weekends they go to my

667

00:25:25,234 --> 00:25:29,204

Tom Brooke: in-laws and they all love them, so it's

668

00:25:29,225 --> 00:25:31,290

Tom Brooke: worked out really well gosh, i don't know

669

00:25:31,310 --> 00:25:33,076

Tom Brooke: how long I can go without seeing my pooch.

670

00:25:33,116 --> 00:25:35,103

Marc Preston: I'm a I'm a big dog guy.

671

00:25:35,204 --> 00:25:39,676

Marc Preston: I got always had dogs around now speaking

672

00:25:39,717 --> 00:25:41,000

Marc Preston: of traveling and coming over here.

673

00:25:41,040 --> 00:25:44,769

Marc Preston: I saw you were, you were in preacher and I

674

00:25:44,849 --> 00:25:46,673

Marc Preston: auditioned for that and I can't remember

675

00:25:47,054 --> 00:25:47,636

Marc Preston: shoot that in.

676

00:25:49,601 --> 00:25:50,403

Marc Preston: Yeah, i did.

677

00:25:50,423 --> 00:25:52,267

Marc Preston: I can't even count that.

678

00:25:52,408 --> 00:25:54,139

Marc Preston: The callbacks I got, i mean a number, i

679

00:25:54,226 --> 00:25:56,318

Marc Preston: mean I did the casting, people were down

680

00:25:56,405 --> 00:25:58,010

Marc Preston: with me, but you know you know the way it

681

00:25:58,030 --> 00:25:58,291

Marc Preston: works.

682

00:25:58,311 --> 00:26:01,078

Marc Preston: So you just, yeah, so many variables, but I

683

00:26:01,118 --> 00:26:02,101

Marc Preston: was very intrigued by it.

684

00:26:02,121 --> 00:26:04,133

Marc Preston: But I don't know, did that it shoot in

685

00:26:04,554 --> 00:26:05,797

Marc Preston: Louisiana or Georgia?

686

00:26:05,877 --> 00:26:08,523

Tom Brooke: I can't remember it was gonna be Georgia,

687

00:26:08,563 --> 00:26:12,257

Tom Brooke: and then it was Albuquerque for oh season,

688

00:26:12,277 --> 00:26:12,698

Tom Brooke: was it?

689

00:26:13,299 --> 00:26:14,641

Marc Preston: why I know they did different.

690

00:26:14,922 --> 00:26:15,443

Marc Preston: Yeah, they didn't.

691

00:26:15,463 --> 00:26:15,964

Marc Preston: They didn't.

692

00:26:16,110 --> 00:26:18,680

Marc Preston: They moved it at some point in time season

693

00:26:18,700 --> 00:26:19,121

Marc Preston: to season.

694

00:26:19,603 --> 00:26:19,984

Tom Brooke: That's right.

695

00:26:20,045 --> 00:26:22,853

Tom Brooke: Yeah, season two was New Orleans okay,

696

00:26:22,893 --> 00:26:23,655

Tom Brooke: that's that's okay.

697

00:26:23,675 --> 00:26:25,078

Tom Brooke: That's that's what I auditioned for,

698

00:26:25,098 --> 00:26:27,611

Tom Brooke: because that's okay, so you were going for

699

00:26:27,651 --> 00:26:29,195

Tom Brooke: season two yep, yep.

700

00:26:29,235 --> 00:26:31,380

Marc Preston: So did you shoot just one season, or did

701

00:26:31,400 --> 00:26:31,962

Marc Preston: you do more?

702

00:26:32,223 --> 00:26:33,085

Marc Preston: I, we did.

703

00:26:33,165 --> 00:26:33,385

Tom Brooke: I did.

704

00:26:35,254 --> 00:26:35,816

Tom Brooke: What did I do?

705

00:26:35,876 --> 00:26:37,441

Tom Brooke: I did the pilot and season one in

706

00:26:37,501 --> 00:26:38,043

Tom Brooke: Albuquerque.

707

00:26:38,063 --> 00:26:40,811

Tom Brooke: Then I went to New Orleans to be killed off.

708

00:26:42,254 --> 00:26:44,818

Tom Brooke: That was very difficult, very difficult,

709

00:26:45,820 --> 00:26:49,566

Tom Brooke: but then then I got called back.

710

00:26:51,189 --> 00:26:53,534

Tom Brooke: Would you like to come back for season four?

711

00:26:54,898 --> 00:26:58,045

Tom Brooke: and that was in Melbourne, australia no,

712

00:26:58,065 --> 00:26:59,950

Tom Brooke: okay, okay, so preacher.

713

00:27:00,150 --> 00:27:03,419

Tom Brooke: That preacher has taken me across the world

714

00:27:03,680 --> 00:27:04,141

Tom Brooke: and back.

715

00:27:04,462 --> 00:27:06,246

Tom Brooke: It was amazing.

716

00:27:06,287 --> 00:27:08,673

Marc Preston: Always want to be an expat for a little

717

00:27:08,714 --> 00:27:11,141

Marc Preston: while and Australia's always been the

718

00:27:11,181 --> 00:27:13,108

Marc Preston: destination I think would be so that, or

719

00:27:13,368 --> 00:27:13,830

Marc Preston: Thailand.

720

00:27:13,930 --> 00:27:16,375

Marc Preston: I think it'd be kind of fun oh, let's.

721

00:27:16,496 --> 00:27:18,119

Tom Brooke: I mean, melbourne is incredible.

722

00:27:18,139 --> 00:27:19,522

Tom Brooke: If you, if you, oh, yeah, yeah.

723

00:27:21,332 --> 00:27:23,696

Marc Preston: I teach voiceover and I've worked with

724

00:27:23,736 --> 00:27:26,340

Marc Preston: students in Melbourne, sydney, perth and

725

00:27:26,380 --> 00:27:30,493

Marc Preston: Canberra, and yeah and everybody.

726

00:27:30,734 --> 00:27:33,664

Marc Preston: The Sydney people are like Melbourne and

727

00:27:33,684 --> 00:27:35,370

Marc Preston: Melbourne's like Sydney people are stuck up,

728

00:27:35,551 --> 00:27:37,238

Marc Preston: you know it's just kind of funny to hear

729

00:27:37,258 --> 00:27:38,604

Marc Preston: them kind of, you know, digging on each

730

00:27:38,664 --> 00:27:38,825

Marc Preston: other.

731

00:27:38,885 --> 00:27:41,173

Marc Preston: But now, what did you think of New Orleans

732

00:27:41,213 --> 00:27:42,878

Marc Preston: when you were, when you were shooting here?

733

00:27:43,440 --> 00:27:43,881

Tom Brooke: loved it.

734

00:27:43,941 --> 00:27:45,073

Tom Brooke: My god, that place.

735

00:27:45,735 --> 00:27:47,399

Tom Brooke: That's not like anywhere else on earth, is

736

00:27:47,499 --> 00:27:48,723

Tom Brooke: it I?

737

00:27:49,725 --> 00:27:53,736

Tom Brooke: I have marching bands going past the window

738

00:27:54,218 --> 00:27:57,266

Tom Brooke: of the hotel you must have been around

739

00:27:57,306 --> 00:27:59,653

Tom Brooke: during Mardi Gras, i'm assuming yeah, oh

740

00:27:59,773 --> 00:28:01,598

Tom Brooke: god good, god bless you, that's, that's

741

00:28:01,799 --> 00:28:02,059

Tom Brooke: nuts.

742

00:28:02,079 --> 00:28:03,022

Tom Brooke: What a time to be there.

743

00:28:03,183 --> 00:28:06,071

Tom Brooke: That was amazing, absolutely amazing.

744

00:28:06,312 --> 00:28:08,318

Tom Brooke: And my daughter has all the beads still

745

00:28:08,358 --> 00:28:11,609

Tom Brooke: from from the, from the floats, you know

746

00:28:11,669 --> 00:28:14,315

Tom Brooke: throwing the beads out for any little kid

747

00:28:14,456 --> 00:28:16,440

Tom Brooke: who comes in it's got to be magical.

748

00:28:16,561 --> 00:28:18,211

Marc Preston: But when you live here and you're an adult

749

00:28:18,251 --> 00:28:19,615

Marc Preston: dealing with traffic, that's a whole

750

00:28:19,655 --> 00:28:22,642

Marc Preston: different thing yeah, it's it's believe it

751

00:28:22,690 --> 00:28:23,856

Marc Preston: or not, a lot of people in New Orleans

752

00:28:23,876 --> 00:28:25,463

Marc Preston: actually leave during Mardi Gras.

753

00:28:25,483 --> 00:28:27,453

Tom Brooke: That's a big vacation time, just to get the

754

00:28:27,493 --> 00:28:29,983

Tom Brooke: heck out of the melee yeah, but there's

755

00:28:30,023 --> 00:28:31,610

Tom Brooke: like, the further out you go, there's that

756

00:28:31,730 --> 00:28:33,356

Tom Brooke: huge, there's that park, and suddenly

757

00:28:33,416 --> 00:28:36,085

Tom Brooke: everything's peaceful and and kind of low

758

00:28:36,126 --> 00:28:38,913

Tom Brooke: key it's neighborhood by neighborhood yeah,

759

00:28:39,214 --> 00:28:42,260

Tom Brooke: i loved it go back to when you were growing

760

00:28:42,300 --> 00:28:42,821

Tom Brooke: up in London.

761

00:28:43,562 --> 00:28:46,558

Marc Preston: You know you went to school for for theater,

762

00:28:46,578 --> 00:28:46,940

Marc Preston: correct?

763

00:28:47,020 --> 00:28:48,907

Marc Preston: I mean that this was something that I mean

764

00:28:48,967 --> 00:28:49,107

Marc Preston: you.

765

00:28:49,128 --> 00:28:51,072

Marc Preston: You didn't go to just a general, you know,

766

00:28:51,133 --> 00:28:53,918

Marc Preston: general, a liberal arts studies, you went

767

00:28:54,239 --> 00:28:55,581

Marc Preston: for theater, correct?

768

00:28:56,082 --> 00:28:59,434

Tom Brooke: yeah, we, i had a.

769

00:28:59,574 --> 00:29:02,819

Tom Brooke: I did a drama degree at university and then

770

00:29:03,039 --> 00:29:09,149

Tom Brooke: after that my dad was very insistent that I

771

00:29:09,310 --> 00:29:13,498

Tom Brooke: ought to know, because acting training in

772

00:29:13,518 --> 00:29:16,865

Tom Brooke: the UK is basically a theater, a theater

773

00:29:16,985 --> 00:29:17,827

Tom Brooke: acting training.

774

00:29:18,168 --> 00:29:21,237

Tom Brooke: He thought I ought to know how to use my

775

00:29:21,277 --> 00:29:23,826

Tom Brooke: voice properly so it didn't pack up on me

776

00:29:24,308 --> 00:29:28,028

Tom Brooke: like his had when he was at the RSC.

777

00:29:28,327 --> 00:29:32,659

Tom Brooke: He had a, he had a vocal issue which which

778

00:29:32,958 --> 00:29:36,651

Tom Brooke: caused him a lot, of, a lot of problems,

779

00:29:36,711 --> 00:29:38,837

Tom Brooke: and so he was saying, like well, in theater,

780

00:29:38,857 --> 00:29:40,582

Tom Brooke: that's, but you're projecting to the back

781

00:29:40,622 --> 00:29:41,131

Tom Brooke: of the house.

782

00:29:41,272 --> 00:29:41,894

Marc Preston: You know you're.

783

00:29:41,914 --> 00:29:43,922

Tom Brooke: It's a much different thing, yeah yeah, and

784

00:29:43,942 --> 00:29:45,086

Tom Brooke: you've got to do it every night, eight

785

00:29:45,270 --> 00:29:45,831

Tom Brooke: shows a week.

786

00:29:45,931 --> 00:29:47,775

Tom Brooke: So so that was.

787

00:29:48,236 --> 00:29:50,662

Tom Brooke: I went to university to do drama, but but

788

00:29:50,702 --> 00:29:51,644

Tom Brooke: they didn't really do that.

789

00:29:51,690 --> 00:29:53,096

Tom Brooke: They didn't really teach you about how to

790

00:29:53,196 --> 00:29:53,779

Tom Brooke: use your voice.

791

00:29:55,104 --> 00:29:57,932

Tom Brooke: There was some physical stuff as well, but

792

00:29:57,992 --> 00:30:01,418

Tom Brooke: I did two years after uni at a drama school

793

00:30:01,458 --> 00:30:07,248

Tom Brooke: in London and lived at home again and yeah

794

00:30:08,150 --> 00:30:12,110

Tom Brooke: managed to get an agent from that last

795

00:30:12,362 --> 00:30:12,883

Tom Brooke: showcase.

796

00:30:13,136 --> 00:30:15,067

Tom Brooke: I was playing a monster.

797

00:30:15,320 --> 00:30:17,440

Tom Brooke: I would play Frankenstein's monster.

798

00:30:18,121 --> 00:30:20,784

Tom Brooke: I was naked and painted green, and this

799

00:30:20,864 --> 00:30:22,006

Tom Brooke: agency still took me on.

800

00:30:22,066 --> 00:30:25,691

Tom Brooke: So I owe Evans and rice a lot.

801

00:30:26,233 --> 00:30:26,974

Tom Brooke: Thank you, jan Evans.

802

00:30:27,014 --> 00:30:29,780

Marc Preston: That's well, again you got a good story of

803

00:30:29,860 --> 00:30:31,711

Marc Preston: you know they cast him after seeing me

804

00:30:31,751 --> 00:30:31,971

Marc Preston: naked.

805

00:30:31,991 --> 00:30:33,554

Marc Preston: They were like all kinds of down for me, no.

806

00:30:35,859 --> 00:30:38,790

Marc Preston: So do you have a preference for stage or on

807

00:30:38,810 --> 00:30:41,157

Marc Preston: camera, as things have gone on the?

808

00:30:41,197 --> 00:30:42,781

Marc Preston: do you have a preference or do you just

809

00:30:42,801 --> 00:30:44,334

Marc Preston: kind of like the contrast and kind of go

810

00:30:44,675 --> 00:30:45,377

Marc Preston: back and forth?

811

00:30:45,578 --> 00:30:46,902

Marc Preston: doesn't make a difference to you.

812

00:30:47,624 --> 00:30:51,055

Tom Brooke: I like the variety of it, i like I like the

813

00:30:51,115 --> 00:30:53,603

Tom Brooke: different opportunities, i like the

814

00:30:53,643 --> 00:30:55,810

Tom Brooke: different people, the different groups of

815

00:30:55,850 --> 00:30:58,477

Tom Brooke: people and the way they sometimes interlink.

816

00:30:59,019 --> 00:30:59,861

Tom Brooke: All of that I really love.

817

00:31:00,323 --> 00:31:02,930

Tom Brooke: Theater is like I was saying before.

818

00:31:03,692 --> 00:31:05,536

Tom Brooke: I feel really comfortable on stage.

819

00:31:06,177 --> 00:31:10,346

Tom Brooke: I don't quite know why, but I do and and I

820

00:31:10,506 --> 00:31:10,887

Tom Brooke: and I.

821

00:31:11,549 --> 00:31:12,712

Tom Brooke: I'm always happy to be there.

822

00:31:13,594 --> 00:31:15,159

Tom Brooke: But you can't really make a living on

823

00:31:15,219 --> 00:31:18,809

Tom Brooke: theater money, so you just have to you know,

824

00:31:18,970 --> 00:31:21,598

Tom Brooke: as you know, you just have to try and get

825

00:31:21,939 --> 00:31:24,105

Tom Brooke: acting work on front of a camera for me

826

00:31:24,667 --> 00:31:26,292

Tom Brooke: memorizing an entire script.

827

00:31:26,352 --> 00:31:27,496

Marc Preston: For me it was just I.

828

00:31:27,977 --> 00:31:30,185

Marc Preston: It always was kind of an intimidating thing,

829

00:31:30,265 --> 00:31:30,526

Marc Preston: you know.

830

00:31:31,309 --> 00:31:31,851

Marc Preston: You know I like that.

831

00:31:31,891 --> 00:31:32,994

Marc Preston: Oh, you only have two pages.

832

00:31:33,656 --> 00:31:34,157

Marc Preston: I got that.

833

00:31:34,197 --> 00:31:35,782

Marc Preston: No not all you want change the line here

834

00:31:35,822 --> 00:31:38,413

Marc Preston: that you know anything more than that.

835

00:31:38,433 --> 00:31:39,336

Marc Preston: My brain starts going.

836

00:31:39,938 --> 00:31:40,982

Marc Preston: I'm gonna give you a hard time.

837

00:31:41,042 --> 00:31:44,675

Marc Preston: Now it's like I've tried every.

838

00:31:44,695 --> 00:31:45,378

Tom Brooke: I have all these little.

839

00:31:45,900 --> 00:31:47,767

Marc Preston: I've so many different little techniques of

840

00:31:47,908 --> 00:31:48,490

Marc Preston: trying to memorize.

841

00:31:48,891 --> 00:31:51,259

Marc Preston: You know, memorize stuff to the one that

842

00:31:51,279 --> 00:31:54,168

Marc Preston: seems to work is actually writing it down,

843

00:31:54,368 --> 00:31:56,194

Marc Preston: because I guess your brain and something

844

00:31:56,235 --> 00:31:58,883

Marc Preston: like that actually write this, you know and

845

00:31:59,204 --> 00:32:02,193

Marc Preston: I just if people looked at my sides, they'd

846

00:32:02,233 --> 00:32:03,877

Marc Preston: be like what is wrong with you?

847

00:32:03,937 --> 00:32:05,541

Marc Preston: all these little highlighting things to

848

00:32:05,661 --> 00:32:06,182

Marc Preston: memorize?

849

00:32:06,263 --> 00:32:06,791

Marc Preston: it's a whole thing.

850

00:32:07,714 --> 00:32:11,124

Marc Preston: But going forward now the the you new

851

00:32:11,164 --> 00:32:13,069

Marc Preston: project, the Empire of Light, being a Sam

852

00:32:13,089 --> 00:32:15,174

Marc Preston: Mendes project, that's like you know.

853

00:32:15,334 --> 00:32:19,302

Marc Preston: He's one of those guys that actors you know,

854

00:32:19,322 --> 00:32:20,572

Marc Preston: there's some directors out there, actors

855

00:32:20,592 --> 00:32:21,916

Marc Preston: really want to work with, you know, and he

856

00:32:21,956 --> 00:32:23,721

Marc Preston: seems to be the one, one of the guys, one

857

00:32:23,890 --> 00:32:25,235

Marc Preston: of the names that pops up a lot.

858

00:32:25,837 --> 00:32:27,282

Marc Preston: How did you, how did you get on this

859

00:32:27,342 --> 00:32:27,643

Marc Preston: project?

860

00:32:27,683 --> 00:32:30,573

Marc Preston: what was, how did this gel together for you?

861

00:32:32,137 --> 00:32:35,266

Tom Brooke: I had worked with Sam at the National.

862

00:32:35,446 --> 00:32:37,311

Tom Brooke: We've done King Lear together on stage, so

863

00:32:40,218 --> 00:32:41,301

Tom Brooke: that was a long job as well.

864

00:32:41,321 --> 00:32:42,364

Tom Brooke: It was about five months.

865

00:32:43,066 --> 00:32:44,650

Tom Brooke: So we had about eight weeks rehearsal and

866

00:32:44,930 --> 00:32:48,279

Tom Brooke: then previews and then we ran in rep.

867

00:32:48,319 --> 00:32:52,149

Tom Brooke: So we were together for quite a while and

868

00:32:52,169 --> 00:32:54,894

Tom Brooke: we got on really well and I really liked

869

00:32:54,954 --> 00:32:55,095

Tom Brooke: him.

870

00:32:57,319 --> 00:33:01,307

Tom Brooke: And actually it was weird because mum had

871

00:33:01,347 --> 00:33:04,533

Tom Brooke: passed away and I was not really in a

872

00:33:04,994 --> 00:33:07,119

Tom Brooke: headspace where I was thinking about work

873

00:33:07,159 --> 00:33:09,604

Tom Brooke: and then this script came through about his

874

00:33:09,670 --> 00:33:14,469

Tom Brooke: mom and I thought, oh, oh, wow, i wonder

875

00:33:14,509 --> 00:33:17,356

Tom Brooke: why that sort of appeared in my life right

876

00:33:17,396 --> 00:33:17,557

Tom Brooke: now.

877

00:33:18,286 --> 00:33:23,934

Tom Brooke: And, yeah, went to meet him for a cup of

878

00:33:23,974 --> 00:33:28,100

Tom Brooke: tea and he said you know, do you want to do

879

00:33:28,140 --> 00:33:28,200

Tom Brooke: it?

880

00:33:28,585 --> 00:33:32,251

Marc Preston: Now, is this project in some way you said,

881

00:33:32,351 --> 00:33:36,097

Marc Preston: based on his mother, or is it circle around

882

00:33:36,137 --> 00:33:37,780

Marc Preston: a mother as a character within the film?

883

00:33:38,886 --> 00:33:40,868

Tom Brooke: Yeah, there's a mother within the film and

884

00:33:40,888 --> 00:33:47,295

Tom Brooke: there's a young boy within the film and his

885

00:33:47,375 --> 00:33:51,920

Tom Brooke: experiences of childhood have kind of

886

00:33:51,981 --> 00:33:52,802

Tom Brooke: coloured the film.

887

00:33:55,970 --> 00:33:59,696

Tom Brooke: So it's not autobiographical, but it's

888

00:33:59,756 --> 00:34:00,438

Tom Brooke: definitely.

889

00:34:03,187 --> 00:34:07,475

Tom Brooke: We were talking about mums a lot and at

890

00:34:07,495 --> 00:34:09,138

Tom Brooke: that stage I was really up for doing that.

891

00:34:10,126 --> 00:34:11,129

Tom Brooke: I was really up for doing it in the

892

00:34:11,189 --> 00:34:13,446

Tom Brooke: audition actually well, audition, but we

893

00:34:13,486 --> 00:34:13,787

Tom Brooke: did it.

894

00:34:13,907 --> 00:34:15,692

Tom Brooke: I think he let me talk about mum for about

895

00:34:15,732 --> 00:34:17,877

Tom Brooke: an hour because I hadn't seen him since the

896

00:34:17,938 --> 00:34:20,925

Tom Brooke: play and he said how you doing?

897

00:34:21,508 --> 00:34:24,784

Tom Brooke: And I said not great, i'm pretty raw at the

898

00:34:24,804 --> 00:34:24,925

Tom Brooke: minute.

899

00:34:25,406 --> 00:34:27,209

Tom Brooke: And he said oh no, what's going on?

900

00:34:27,249 --> 00:34:31,036

Marc Preston: And I told him and yeah, it was like a

901

00:34:31,076 --> 00:34:36,572

Marc Preston: little therapy session- Well, that begs the

902

00:34:36,672 --> 00:34:39,998

Marc Preston: question is it kind of a little bit of an

903

00:34:40,058 --> 00:34:43,029

Marc Preston: escape for you Some people it can be you

904

00:34:43,049 --> 00:34:44,813

Marc Preston: can kind of depart whatever is going on in

905

00:34:44,893 --> 00:34:46,837

Marc Preston: life for a moment, and so it's kind of, in

906

00:34:46,857 --> 00:34:47,719

Marc Preston: its own way, therapeutic.

907

00:34:48,987 --> 00:34:50,589

Marc Preston: Or when stuff's going on in life does it

908

00:34:50,649 --> 00:34:53,393

Marc Preston: kind of, do you feel, hinder your ability

909

00:34:53,474 --> 00:34:56,358

Marc Preston: to do what you need to do on camera?

910

00:34:59,189 --> 00:35:00,554

Tom Brooke: That's a really interesting question.

911

00:35:00,945 --> 00:35:05,451

Tom Brooke: I have always felt that I've got the jobs

912

00:35:05,491 --> 00:35:10,577

Tom Brooke: that I've got because of where I was at at

913

00:35:10,597 --> 00:35:12,279

Tom Brooke: that point in my life when they came along,

914

00:35:14,566 --> 00:35:19,733

Tom Brooke: And so I feel like you can use if you're

915

00:35:19,753 --> 00:35:22,076

Tom Brooke: lucky, you can use whatever's going on in

916

00:35:22,116 --> 00:35:24,799

Tom Brooke: your life really, or what's gone on before

917

00:35:24,840 --> 00:35:27,928

Tom Brooke: that in your life When you get up.

918

00:35:28,048 --> 00:35:29,150

Tom Brooke: I like that very much.

919

00:35:29,250 --> 00:35:32,114

Tom Brooke: I like taking things that have happened to

920

00:35:32,154 --> 00:35:34,117

Tom Brooke: me or feelings that I've had and putting

921

00:35:34,137 --> 00:35:34,918

Tom Brooke: them into a script.

922

00:35:34,978 --> 00:35:36,019

Tom Brooke: You know, like putting them into a

923

00:35:36,059 --> 00:35:40,092

Tom Brooke: performance, And usually when I read a

924

00:35:40,132 --> 00:35:42,638

Tom Brooke: script, it will be I'll be noticing things

925

00:35:42,698 --> 00:35:46,970

Tom Brooke: about it that remind me of myself, So I

926

00:35:47,051 --> 00:35:48,860

Tom Brooke: sort of go okay, I know how to do this,

927

00:35:49,221 --> 00:35:49,905

Tom Brooke: because I felt that once.

928

00:35:50,807 --> 00:35:52,551

Marc Preston: So the projects kind of act like it sounds

929

00:35:52,571 --> 00:35:54,034

Marc Preston: like they can act like a little bit of a

930

00:35:54,194 --> 00:35:55,598

Marc Preston: Marc on the timeline for you.

931

00:35:56,847 --> 00:35:59,091

Marc Preston: Not just I did that job, but what was going

932

00:35:59,312 --> 00:36:02,077

Marc Preston: on, the experience, the people you met and

933

00:36:02,097 --> 00:36:02,658

Marc Preston: all that kind of stuff.

934

00:36:03,246 --> 00:36:05,272

Marc Preston: Yeah, it takes on a new meaning, or more of

935

00:36:05,352 --> 00:36:06,535

Marc Preston: an enhanced meaning, i guess.

936

00:36:07,205 --> 00:36:08,186

Tom Brooke: Yeah, I think that's true.

937

00:36:10,089 --> 00:36:13,853

Tom Brooke: For example, I met my wife playing husband

938

00:36:13,913 --> 00:36:20,541

Tom Brooke: and wife on a play Good casting.

939

00:36:20,925 --> 00:36:22,570

Marc Preston: I think that would be so cool to meet

940

00:36:22,691 --> 00:36:24,848

Marc Preston: someone like that, but after you're married,

941

00:36:25,068 --> 00:36:26,994

Marc Preston: can you do that and not get sick of each

942

00:36:27,174 --> 00:36:27,395

Marc Preston: other?

943

00:36:28,386 --> 00:36:29,830

Marc Preston: I mean, if you're doing, let's say, a play,

944

00:36:29,870 --> 00:36:31,755

Marc Preston: and you're coming home and you're 24, seven

945

00:36:31,795 --> 00:36:34,822

Marc Preston: with this person is that something.

946

00:36:34,842 --> 00:36:35,925

Tom Brooke: You're like I don't know if you can do that.

947

00:36:36,746 --> 00:36:43,598

Tom Brooke: That is the test, But yeah, I wouldn't be

948

00:36:43,618 --> 00:36:44,379

Tom Brooke: able to do it without her.

949

00:36:46,608 --> 00:36:47,510

Tom Brooke: So and it's really.

950

00:36:47,630 --> 00:36:49,093

Tom Brooke: I think it's great as well, because you get

951

00:36:49,113 --> 00:36:51,398

Tom Brooke: to, you get it.

952

00:36:52,466 --> 00:36:54,991

Tom Brooke: I get it when she's got a lot on, She gets

953

00:36:55,051 --> 00:36:55,952

Tom Brooke: it when I've got a lot on.

954

00:36:56,914 --> 00:36:58,517

Tom Brooke: We help each other through it because we

955

00:36:58,537 --> 00:36:58,998

Tom Brooke: both get it.

956

00:36:59,945 --> 00:37:01,368

Marc Preston: That's got to be such cool experience.

957

00:37:01,748 --> 00:37:07,118

Marc Preston: It's kind of like its own little fairy tale

958

00:37:07,178 --> 00:37:07,699

Marc Preston: kind of a thing.

959

00:37:07,985 --> 00:37:09,929

Marc Preston: It's like I do this thing, they do this

960

00:37:09,990 --> 00:37:10,350

Marc Preston: thing.

961

00:37:10,731 --> 00:37:12,535

Marc Preston: We got together and it worked, Yeah.

962

00:37:20,578 --> 00:37:22,021

Marc Preston: But I was curious on Empire of Light, you

963

00:37:22,041 --> 00:37:25,032

Marc Preston: know, with Sam Mendoz directing that First

964

00:37:25,052 --> 00:37:26,522

Marc Preston: of all, was it shot in the UK, or where did

965

00:37:26,542 --> 00:37:26,925

Marc Preston: you all shoot that?

966

00:37:27,688 --> 00:37:30,459

Tom Brooke: In Margate, which is a seaside town on the

967

00:37:30,720 --> 00:37:31,905

Tom Brooke: southeast coast of England.

968

00:37:32,428 --> 00:37:33,334

Marc Preston: And that's roughly.

969

00:37:33,375 --> 00:37:34,462

Marc Preston: You said your mother's from the southern

970

00:37:34,482 --> 00:37:34,925

Marc Preston: coast as well, correct?

971

00:37:35,968 --> 00:37:37,913

Tom Brooke: Yeah, she's a bit further along, but

972

00:37:39,137 --> 00:37:41,744

Tom Brooke: they're in Worthing, the Lawson's in

973

00:37:41,764 --> 00:37:44,049

Tom Brooke: Worthing, and we were just up the coast in

974

00:37:44,089 --> 00:37:44,570

Tom Brooke: Margate.

975

00:37:44,610 --> 00:37:47,877

Tom Brooke: But we yeah, it was.

976

00:37:47,997 --> 00:37:49,540

Tom Brooke: I thought it was interesting because I

977

00:37:49,560 --> 00:37:51,806

Tom Brooke: hadn't done any filming with Sam And his

978

00:37:52,066 --> 00:37:56,291

Tom Brooke: approach was very similar to the play that

979

00:37:56,331 --> 00:38:00,075

Tom Brooke: we did, in that it started with a few weeks

980

00:38:00,095 --> 00:38:02,738

Tom Brooke: around the table just talking about the

981

00:38:02,778 --> 00:38:05,802

Tom Brooke: script and reading it and making changes.

982

00:38:07,587 --> 00:38:09,210

Tom Brooke: There was a great book that he had when we

983

00:38:09,230 --> 00:38:11,853

Tom Brooke: were doing The King Lear which allowed you

984

00:38:11,894 --> 00:38:14,838

Tom Brooke: to swap words out and put words back in.

985

00:38:14,978 --> 00:38:16,740

Tom Brooke: That kept the meter.

986

00:38:18,707 --> 00:38:21,771

Tom Brooke: But if a word was odd and people didn't

987

00:38:21,831 --> 00:38:23,453

Tom Brooke: quite understand it because it was so old,

988

00:38:24,214 --> 00:38:28,599

Tom Brooke: he just said change it to something that

989

00:38:28,639 --> 00:38:30,721

Tom Brooke: does work, that does sort of scan and that

990

00:38:30,761 --> 00:38:32,944

Tom Brooke: doesn't take you out of the moment whilst

991

00:38:32,964 --> 00:38:33,905

Tom Brooke: you try to figure out what it means.

992

00:38:34,967 --> 00:38:36,070

Marc Preston: I mean that's certainly going to help you

993

00:38:36,090 --> 00:38:38,034

Marc Preston: be more authentic, because if a word's just

994

00:38:38,114 --> 00:38:41,582

Marc Preston: not naturally wanting to come out, that you

995

00:38:41,602 --> 00:38:42,845

Marc Preston: know it, kind of breaks your flow a little

996

00:38:42,865 --> 00:38:43,486

Marc Preston: bit, Get rid of it.

997

00:38:43,866 --> 00:38:46,029

Tom Brooke: And also, if the audience are listening

998

00:38:46,971 --> 00:38:48,413

Tom Brooke: that happens to me all the time, especially

999

00:38:48,433 --> 00:38:50,516

Tom Brooke: in Shakespeare like you hear a word and you

Speaker:

00:38:50,556 --> 00:38:52,379

Tom Brooke: spend the next three lines trying to figure

Speaker:

00:38:52,418 --> 00:38:55,006

Tom Brooke: out what on earth it meant, And by that

Speaker:

00:38:55,046 --> 00:38:57,589

Tom Brooke: point you've lost those three lines, you

Speaker:

00:38:57,609 --> 00:38:59,771

Tom Brooke: don't know what's going on and you slowly

Speaker:

00:38:59,811 --> 00:39:00,792

Tom Brooke: begin to lose interest.

Speaker:

00:39:00,832 --> 00:39:01,913

Tom Brooke: So I don't know.

Speaker:

00:39:02,234 --> 00:39:04,776

Tom Brooke: It was a really impressive, simple,

Speaker:

00:39:04,937 --> 00:39:07,880

Tom Brooke: impressive tool just to making sure that

Speaker:

00:39:07,940 --> 00:39:12,248

Tom Brooke: everybody was remained on board cast and

Speaker:

00:39:12,389 --> 00:39:14,111

Tom Brooke: audience And he did the same thing with

Speaker:

00:39:14,151 --> 00:39:14,411

Tom Brooke: this.

Speaker:

00:39:15,853 --> 00:39:18,097

Tom Brooke: There was lots of back and forth, lots of

Speaker:

00:39:18,157 --> 00:39:22,623

Tom Brooke: chat about how people think, about how

Speaker:

00:39:22,643 --> 00:39:24,446

Tom Brooke: people saw the different characters, And

Speaker:

00:39:25,887 --> 00:39:27,750

Tom Brooke: that was fascinating, Hearing other people

Speaker:

00:39:27,770 --> 00:39:31,675

Tom Brooke: talking about your character or other

Speaker:

00:39:31,695 --> 00:39:33,177

Tom Brooke: people's characters, how they saw it.

Speaker:

00:39:34,058 --> 00:39:35,740

Tom Brooke: And then when we got onto the set, all the

Speaker:

00:39:35,760 --> 00:39:36,701

Tom Brooke: work had sort of been done.

Speaker:

00:39:37,105 --> 00:39:37,746

Marc Preston: His films.

Speaker:

00:39:38,026 --> 00:39:40,029

Marc Preston: I've always found I really the look or the

Speaker:

00:39:40,109 --> 00:39:43,373

Marc Preston: aesthetic of them has always been just like

Speaker:

00:39:43,453 --> 00:39:46,156

Marc Preston: even something like to go to Baby Driver or

Speaker:

00:39:46,217 --> 00:39:50,786

Marc Preston: to like the Bond films And the.

Speaker:

00:39:50,886 --> 00:39:51,988

Marc Preston: You know, it's just they have to have a

Speaker:

00:39:52,048 --> 00:39:53,209

Marc Preston: certain aesthetic to them.

Speaker:

00:39:53,750 --> 00:39:55,753

Marc Preston: Which brings me the question did you kind

Speaker:

00:39:55,773 --> 00:39:57,175

Marc Preston: of pick his brain going like you know, you

Speaker:

00:39:57,215 --> 00:39:59,638

Marc Preston: got a direct line to the broccoli

Speaker:

00:40:00,159 --> 00:40:01,020

Marc Preston: organization there.

Speaker:

00:40:02,045 --> 00:40:03,890

Marc Preston: They're looking for a bond, you know, just

Speaker:

00:40:03,950 --> 00:40:04,652

Marc Preston: throwing it out there.

Speaker:

00:40:08,668 --> 00:40:11,272

Tom Brooke: No, i didn't manage to do that.

Speaker:

00:40:11,672 --> 00:40:15,318

Tom Brooke: There was always seemed to be just

Speaker:

00:40:15,718 --> 00:40:18,923

Tom Brooke: something else to do before I made the lead

Speaker:

00:40:18,943 --> 00:40:19,905

Tom Brooke: to ask him about Bond.

Speaker:

00:40:21,847 --> 00:40:23,949

Tom Brooke: But we talked about movies a lot.

Speaker:

00:40:24,349 --> 00:40:28,894

Tom Brooke: I mean, he's worked with a few greats, he's

Speaker:

00:40:28,914 --> 00:40:31,677

Tom Brooke: got great stories, he's got really filthy

Speaker:

00:40:31,717 --> 00:40:35,000

Tom Brooke: jokes, which is, i sort of feel like it's

Speaker:

00:40:35,020 --> 00:40:37,102

Tom Brooke: so surprising, because you sort of see him

Speaker:

00:40:37,142 --> 00:40:39,925

Tom Brooke: accepting awards here, there and everywhere,

Speaker:

00:40:41,267 --> 00:40:44,551

Tom Brooke: but the ability to tell a really filthy

Speaker:

00:40:44,591 --> 00:40:46,534

Tom Brooke: joke, i think is one of his main strengths.

Speaker:

00:40:47,195 --> 00:40:49,898

Tom Brooke: But yeah, i mean, the look at this one is

Speaker:

00:40:49,938 --> 00:40:53,610

Tom Brooke: him and Roger Deakins together, and that

Speaker:

00:40:53,650 --> 00:40:55,555

Tom Brooke: was a moment I mean that's.

Speaker:

00:40:55,615 --> 00:40:55,916

Marc Preston: Is it the?

Speaker:

00:40:55,997 --> 00:40:58,283

Marc Preston: is he the same that the DP he uses on all

Speaker:

00:40:58,303 --> 00:40:58,885

Marc Preston: of his projects?

Speaker:

00:40:59,347 --> 00:41:00,331

Tom Brooke: Yeah, he's used him before.

Speaker:

00:41:00,371 --> 00:41:03,323

Tom Brooke: But they, but Roger Deakins, did all of the

Speaker:

00:41:03,363 --> 00:41:03,925

Tom Brooke: Coen Brothers films.

Speaker:

00:41:05,108 --> 00:41:06,230

Marc Preston: Oh, really Okay.

Speaker:

00:41:06,370 --> 00:41:09,417

Tom Brooke: And so for me he was sort of the person

Speaker:

00:41:09,437 --> 00:41:12,424

Tom Brooke: that I was most starstruck by on set, And I

Speaker:

00:41:12,464 --> 00:41:13,026

Tom Brooke: found it really Well.

Speaker:

00:41:13,046 --> 00:41:15,079

Marc Preston: All their films have a very specific

Speaker:

00:41:15,140 --> 00:41:15,824

Marc Preston: aesthetic as well.

Speaker:

00:41:15,844 --> 00:41:20,471

Tom Brooke: Yeah, Yeah, i mean it's fascinating because

Speaker:

00:41:20,491 --> 00:41:22,653

Tom Brooke: they're all so different but they're also

Speaker:

00:41:24,095 --> 00:41:26,138

Tom Brooke: unique The look of them, aren't they?

Speaker:

00:41:26,158 --> 00:41:26,318

Tom Brooke: Like?

Speaker:

00:41:26,398 --> 00:41:31,064

Tom Brooke: I don't know, hudsucker Proxy is so

Speaker:

00:41:31,104 --> 00:41:31,925

Tom Brooke: different to the Big Lebowski.

Speaker:

00:41:33,867 --> 00:41:35,630

Tom Brooke: Anyway, i just I found it really.

Speaker:

00:41:36,250 --> 00:41:37,752

Tom Brooke: I was really nervous around him because

Speaker:

00:41:37,772 --> 00:41:41,036

Tom Brooke: he's sort of a part of movie history And it

Speaker:

00:41:41,076 --> 00:41:41,457

Tom Brooke: was silly.

Speaker:

00:41:41,517 --> 00:41:43,079

Tom Brooke: But it was the first time I actually got to

Speaker:

00:41:43,119 --> 00:41:47,484

Tom Brooke: say I'm such a fan, was at the screening of

Speaker:

00:41:47,524 --> 00:41:50,950

Tom Brooke: the movie And I had to say like look, i'm

Speaker:

00:41:50,970 --> 00:41:53,033

Tom Brooke: really sorry I couldn't really talk to you

Speaker:

00:41:53,053 --> 00:41:54,555

Tom Brooke: during the film.

Speaker:

00:41:54,635 --> 00:41:57,079

Marc Preston: You're sort of you're such a hero, but I

Speaker:

00:41:57,119 --> 00:41:59,409

Marc Preston: was so Well, i tell you, hill Caesar, for

Speaker:

00:41:59,469 --> 00:42:02,057

Marc Preston: me aesthetically like that was, like

Speaker:

00:42:03,280 --> 00:42:04,905

Marc Preston: everything was just perfect with that one

Speaker:

00:42:05,146 --> 00:42:06,108

Marc Preston: Perfect, But they're all.

Speaker:

00:42:06,128 --> 00:42:08,614

Tom Brooke: They're perfect movies, I mean, like Jannin

Speaker:

00:42:08,634 --> 00:42:09,837

Tom Brooke: Tatum in Hill Caesar.

Speaker:

00:42:11,889 --> 00:42:12,831

Marc Preston: You see, i was for you.

Speaker:

00:42:12,871 --> 00:42:14,073

Marc Preston: I was thinking about George Clooney.

Speaker:

00:42:14,113 --> 00:42:16,178

Marc Preston: you know, it's like randomness him showing

Speaker:

00:42:16,258 --> 00:42:17,789

Marc Preston: up and it's just Those films.

Speaker:

00:42:17,829 --> 00:42:19,277

Marc Preston: occasionally, when I speak with folks like

Speaker:

00:42:19,317 --> 00:42:20,644

Marc Preston: yourself, i'm like, yeah, i gotta go watch

Speaker:

00:42:20,664 --> 00:42:20,925

Marc Preston: that movie.

Speaker:

00:42:21,467 --> 00:42:23,835

Marc Preston: Yeah, and I'll end up going watching it,

Speaker:

00:42:23,875 --> 00:42:25,219

Marc Preston: and that's the reason why I fall behind on

Speaker:

00:42:25,280 --> 00:42:26,604

Marc Preston: every show I need to be watching and

Speaker:

00:42:26,624 --> 00:42:26,905

Marc Preston: keeping up on.

Speaker:

00:42:27,407 --> 00:42:29,739

Tom Brooke: Because of the movies That's interesting,

Speaker:

00:42:29,799 --> 00:42:30,221

Tom Brooke: exactly So.

Speaker:

00:42:30,242 --> 00:42:30,885

Tom Brooke: You go to a movie first.

Speaker:

00:42:31,847 --> 00:42:33,690

Marc Preston: Now a couple of last questions out.

Speaker:

00:42:33,810 --> 00:42:36,796

Marc Preston: You've how long have you been in Boston?

Speaker:

00:42:36,836 --> 00:42:38,278

Marc Preston: Let's go around this day.

Speaker:

00:42:39,606 --> 00:42:41,529

Tom Brooke: This time we did.

Speaker:

00:42:43,953 --> 00:42:46,177

Tom Brooke: we will have done just under four months

Speaker:

00:42:46,578 --> 00:42:47,279

Tom Brooke: when we leave.

Speaker:

00:42:47,379 --> 00:42:50,488

Tom Brooke: Okay, because they started Season 2 of

Speaker:

00:42:50,508 --> 00:42:52,971

Tom Brooke: Julia in France, so they started doing.

Speaker:

00:42:53,811 --> 00:42:56,975

Tom Brooke: they started in Cannes and then we joined

Speaker:

00:42:57,716 --> 00:43:01,540

Tom Brooke: when our daughter had the, when the summer

Speaker:

00:43:01,580 --> 00:43:03,903

Tom Brooke: holidays turned up, and then we went to

Speaker:

00:43:03,963 --> 00:43:05,925

Tom Brooke: Paris, which was, i thought, pretty magical.

Speaker:

00:43:06,566 --> 00:43:07,567

Tom Brooke: I hope she did as well.

Speaker:

00:43:08,168 --> 00:43:08,388

Tom Brooke: It was.

Speaker:

00:43:08,549 --> 00:43:12,454

Tom Brooke: it was quite hot And I sometimes I wonder

Speaker:

00:43:12,494 --> 00:43:15,719

Tom Brooke: if us walking around, going look Paris kind

Speaker:

00:43:15,759 --> 00:43:16,520

Tom Brooke: of got a bit old.

Speaker:

00:43:17,907 --> 00:43:19,572

Marc Preston: You're still making memories and I'm sure

Speaker:

00:43:19,612 --> 00:43:21,055

Marc Preston: she's taking pictures and that.

Speaker:

00:43:21,075 --> 00:43:21,156

Tom Brooke: Yeah.

Speaker:

00:43:21,925 --> 00:43:24,029

Marc Preston: You know curious what when you're, when

Speaker:

00:43:24,049 --> 00:43:26,533

Marc Preston: you're here, what is it that you do when

Speaker:

00:43:26,553 --> 00:43:27,996

Marc Preston: you're in the US that you can't do in the

Speaker:

00:43:28,096 --> 00:43:29,158

Marc Preston: UK, that you really enjoy?

Speaker:

00:43:31,726 --> 00:43:32,966

Tom Brooke: I think big in America.

Speaker:

00:43:33,226 --> 00:43:36,188

Tom Brooke: just in general, I find Americans really

Speaker:

00:43:37,348 --> 00:43:39,589

Tom Brooke: just the most welcoming people.

Speaker:

00:43:39,609 --> 00:43:45,776

Tom Brooke: Yeah, I love how open everybody is and how

Speaker:

00:43:45,816 --> 00:43:48,379

Tom Brooke: you can strike up a conversation with

Speaker:

00:43:49,681 --> 00:43:50,402

Tom Brooke: almost anybody.

Speaker:

00:43:54,193 --> 00:43:58,040

Tom Brooke: I really enjoy a little holiday away from

Speaker:

00:43:58,782 --> 00:44:03,070

Tom Brooke: the more reserved approach to being a human

Speaker:

00:44:03,150 --> 00:44:07,179

Tom Brooke: being that perhaps English people have.

Speaker:

00:44:09,650 --> 00:44:10,693

Marc Preston: Real quick before we get going.

Speaker:

00:44:10,713 --> 00:44:13,939

Marc Preston: I always do my quick seven questions Here.

Speaker:

00:44:13,959 --> 00:44:15,273

Marc Preston: I always ask She has a little extra.

Speaker:

00:44:15,293 --> 00:44:16,798

Marc Preston: Get to know you, if you will.

Speaker:

00:44:17,410 --> 00:44:19,081

Marc Preston: The first question is always and I'm very

Speaker:

00:44:19,141 --> 00:44:20,390

Marc Preston: curious because you're from the UK and I'm

Speaker:

00:44:20,550 --> 00:44:22,933

Marc Preston: a food guy What is your favorite comfort

Speaker:

00:44:23,074 --> 00:44:23,374

Marc Preston: food?

Speaker:

00:44:26,950 --> 00:44:28,474

Tom Brooke: That would have been Mum's Spag Bowl

Speaker:

00:44:29,095 --> 00:44:30,178

Tom Brooke: Spaghetti Bolognese.

Speaker:

00:44:31,830 --> 00:44:34,356

Tom Brooke: It was just standard, very simple, but

Speaker:

00:44:34,476 --> 00:44:36,882

Tom Brooke: absolutely perfect and a trifle.

Speaker:

00:44:37,130 --> 00:44:39,378

Marc Preston: I have heard the Spag Bowl one other person

Speaker:

00:44:39,638 --> 00:44:40,965

Marc Preston: spoken with They had explained what that

Speaker:

00:44:41,004 --> 00:44:41,304

Marc Preston: was like.

Speaker:

00:44:41,342 --> 00:44:42,855

Marc Preston: Oh, spaghetti, i know what that is, but

Speaker:

00:44:42,893 --> 00:44:44,434

Marc Preston: Spag Bowl never heard it called that before.

Speaker:

00:44:44,475 --> 00:44:45,739

Marc Preston: But I've had somebody else say that.

Speaker:

00:44:46,070 --> 00:44:47,395

Tom Brooke: And is trifle a thing over here?

Speaker:

00:44:48,550 --> 00:44:52,312

Tom Brooke: The layered kind of dessert, thing, i think

Speaker:

00:44:52,372 --> 00:44:53,818

Tom Brooke: even in the South it's a big thing.

Speaker:

00:44:53,910 --> 00:44:54,993

Marc Preston: I don't know if I'll call it a trifle, but

Speaker:

00:44:55,013 --> 00:44:56,999

Marc Preston: it's a yeah, without a doubt.

Speaker:

00:44:57,830 --> 00:45:00,916

Marc Preston: Now, if you were to sit down and you're

Speaker:

00:45:00,936 --> 00:45:03,361

Marc Preston: going to talk story with three folks

Speaker:

00:45:04,002 --> 00:45:05,632

Marc Preston: sitting down having a cup of coffee for a

Speaker:

00:45:05,692 --> 00:45:07,758

Marc Preston: few hours, who would those three people be

Speaker:

00:45:08,720 --> 00:45:10,473

Marc Preston: living or not that you would love to sit

Speaker:

00:45:10,513 --> 00:45:10,894

Marc Preston: down with?

Speaker:

00:45:13,510 --> 00:45:14,956

Tom Brooke: Can I say Walter Matta and Jack Lemon.

Speaker:

00:45:15,630 --> 00:45:17,274

Marc Preston: Getting the two of them together would make

Speaker:

00:45:17,294 --> 00:45:20,761

Marc Preston: it a more interesting you know, for the

Speaker:

00:45:20,821 --> 00:45:21,663

Marc Preston: films they've made.

Speaker:

00:45:21,790 --> 00:45:23,413

Tom Brooke: Yeah, that's one of the pluses.

Speaker:

00:45:23,474 --> 00:45:26,420

Tom Brooke: I think of Dad, because he's one of the

Speaker:

00:45:26,440 --> 00:45:30,274

Tom Brooke: many, but he would quite often just pass me

Speaker:

00:45:30,314 --> 00:45:33,921

Tom Brooke: things that he'd taped from the telly and

Speaker:

00:45:33,961 --> 00:45:34,682

Tom Brooke: say watch this.

Speaker:

00:45:35,530 --> 00:45:38,317

Tom Brooke: And one of the ones was the front page with

Speaker:

00:45:38,338 --> 00:45:42,950

Tom Brooke: Jack Lemon and Walter Matta, a Billy Wilder

Speaker:

00:45:44,273 --> 00:45:47,581

Tom Brooke: movie which remains absolutely top three.

Speaker:

00:45:48,490 --> 00:45:49,974

Marc Preston: Going back to when you were a young guy.

Speaker:

00:45:50,014 --> 00:45:52,520

Marc Preston: Next question who was your first celebrity

Speaker:

00:45:52,580 --> 00:45:52,961

Marc Preston: crush?

Speaker:

00:45:55,052 --> 00:45:57,957

Tom Brooke: Oh, the lead singer of Transvision, vamp.

Speaker:

00:45:58,618 --> 00:46:00,121

Marc Preston: Transvision Vamp.

Speaker:

00:46:00,141 --> 00:46:01,383

Marc Preston: Do you remember them, wendy?

Speaker:

00:46:02,510 --> 00:46:05,362

Tom Brooke: Yeah, it's like a UK punk Pump band.

Speaker:

00:46:05,663 --> 00:46:06,286

Tom Brooke: Are you doing it?

Speaker:

00:46:06,506 --> 00:46:07,350

Tom Brooke: Are you Googling it?

Speaker:

00:46:08,112 --> 00:46:08,132

Tom Brooke: I?

Speaker:

00:46:08,152 --> 00:46:08,994

Marc Preston: had to Google if I.

Speaker:

00:46:09,214 --> 00:46:12,582

Marc Preston: Oh okay, lovely lady, Now I'm going to have

Speaker:

00:46:12,602 --> 00:46:13,003

Marc Preston: to go listen.

Speaker:

00:46:13,290 --> 00:46:15,056

Marc Preston: I'm a music guy, so I want to go listen and

Speaker:

00:46:15,076 --> 00:46:16,019

Marc Preston: find out what that's all about.

Speaker:

00:46:16,310 --> 00:46:18,395

Marc Preston: Yeah, because we grew up in that era where

Speaker:

00:46:18,435 --> 00:46:21,182

Marc Preston: that was punked, but that was ground zero

Speaker:

00:46:21,610 --> 00:46:22,854

Marc Preston: in London for a lot of that.

Speaker:

00:46:22,894 --> 00:46:24,578

Tom Brooke: Yeah, What was her second name?

Speaker:

00:46:24,618 --> 00:46:25,400

Tom Brooke: Wendy, something?

Speaker:

00:46:25,741 --> 00:46:28,769

Tom Brooke: Wendy James, wendy James, yeah, wendy James.

Speaker:

00:46:29,532 --> 00:46:31,031

Marc Preston: Yeah, so that's, I just learned something I

Speaker:

00:46:31,071 --> 00:46:33,592

Marc Preston: love learning things If you're going to be.

Speaker:

00:46:33,633 --> 00:46:34,658

Marc Preston: Next question if you're going to be going

Speaker:

00:46:34,678 --> 00:46:37,393

Marc Preston: to exotic island, somewhere you really want

Speaker:

00:46:37,413 --> 00:46:39,184

Marc Preston: to be, but they don't have streaming you

Speaker:

00:46:39,265 --> 00:46:39,526

Marc Preston: got.

Speaker:

00:46:39,587 --> 00:46:40,840

Marc Preston: If you want to watch a movie, you're going

Speaker:

00:46:40,860 --> 00:46:41,530

Marc Preston: to have to bring a DVD.

Speaker:

00:46:41,530 --> 00:46:42,776

Marc Preston: If you want to listen to music and have to

Speaker:

00:46:42,796 --> 00:46:43,379

Marc Preston: bring a CD.

Speaker:

00:46:43,620 --> 00:46:45,308

Marc Preston: Full year you're going to be there with the

Speaker:

00:46:45,328 --> 00:46:46,153

Marc Preston: whole family, you're going to enjoy

Speaker:

00:46:46,173 --> 00:46:48,063

Marc Preston: yourself, but what would the CD, what would

Speaker:

00:46:48,083 --> 00:46:49,972

Marc Preston: the album be and what would the movie be

Speaker:

00:46:49,992 --> 00:46:51,137

Marc Preston: that you would bring with you?

Speaker:

00:46:51,911 --> 00:46:55,695

Tom Brooke: Oh, wow, the movie would probably be

Speaker:

00:46:55,816 --> 00:46:56,438

Tom Brooke: Millers Crossing.

Speaker:

00:46:56,931 --> 00:46:58,093

Tom Brooke: Uh, coen Brothers again.

Speaker:

00:46:58,975 --> 00:47:01,259

Tom Brooke: the plot, the plotting of that movie is so

Speaker:

00:47:01,340 --> 00:47:01,801

Tom Brooke: intricate.

Speaker:

00:47:03,711 --> 00:47:04,554

Tom Brooke: Uh, it's, it's just.

Speaker:

00:47:04,995 --> 00:47:06,910

Tom Brooke: it never gets old for me, that movie, and

Speaker:

00:47:06,930 --> 00:47:09,318

Tom Brooke: Albert Finney's in it, and John Tautura's

Speaker:

00:47:09,378 --> 00:47:11,914

Tom Brooke: in it, uh, and I think it's one of those

Speaker:

00:47:11,955 --> 00:47:13,458

Tom Brooke: movies where, just across the board,

Speaker:

00:47:13,598 --> 00:47:15,703

Tom Brooke: everybody is just it's just perfect.

Speaker:

00:47:15,970 --> 00:47:19,976

Tom Brooke: So I take Millers Crossing and the, the CD.

Speaker:

00:47:21,138 --> 00:47:22,320

Tom Brooke: the CD is tough.

Speaker:

00:47:22,961 --> 00:47:23,762

Marc Preston: Transvision vamp.

Speaker:

00:47:23,803 --> 00:47:24,243

Marc Preston: No, I'm just kidding.

Speaker:

00:47:25,611 --> 00:47:27,398

Tom Brooke: I was going down that route because I feel

Speaker:

00:47:27,458 --> 00:47:30,210

Tom Brooke: like I'm just I'm playing our daughter all

Speaker:

00:47:30,370 --> 00:47:33,239

Tom Brooke: of these, uh, all of these 80s songs at the

Speaker:

00:47:33,279 --> 00:47:35,675

Tom Brooke: minute, so I'd probably try and take do you

Speaker:

00:47:35,715 --> 00:47:35,996

Tom Brooke: remember?

Speaker:

00:47:36,016 --> 00:47:37,540

Tom Brooke: did you ever have these over here?

Speaker:

00:47:37,870 --> 00:47:39,414

Tom Brooke: Now, that's what I call music.

Speaker:

00:47:39,835 --> 00:47:41,639

Marc Preston: Oh my God, yeah, yeah, the, the, the, the,

Speaker:

00:47:41,659 --> 00:47:42,320

Marc Preston: the compilation.

Speaker:

00:47:43,630 --> 00:47:44,994

Tom Brooke: So there was a great one called.

Speaker:

00:47:45,034 --> 00:47:46,599

Tom Brooke: now that's what I call music 10.

Speaker:

00:47:47,190 --> 00:47:49,778

Tom Brooke: I just remember number 10 was was huge.

Speaker:

00:47:51,011 --> 00:47:53,198

Tom Brooke: Uh, and that will be a good mix.

Speaker:

00:47:53,850 --> 00:47:56,974

Tom Brooke: Four tapes, Uh, she, she.

Speaker:

00:47:57,075 --> 00:47:58,559

Marc Preston: I think she'd get a lot out of that one as

Speaker:

00:47:58,599 --> 00:48:02,582

Marc Preston: well, so that that will be my but isn't

Speaker:

00:48:02,602 --> 00:48:04,188

Marc Preston: that fun when you can take the music that

Speaker:

00:48:04,288 --> 00:48:06,075

Marc Preston: meant something to you, play it for your

Speaker:

00:48:06,115 --> 00:48:07,813

Marc Preston: kid And it's.

Speaker:

00:48:08,074 --> 00:48:10,333

Marc Preston: it's funny, though My uh, my youngest for

Speaker:

00:48:10,373 --> 00:48:12,137

Marc Preston: whatever me, being from Texas originally,

Speaker:

00:48:12,177 --> 00:48:13,901

Marc Preston: she loves country music.

Speaker:

00:48:13,921 --> 00:48:16,077

Marc Preston: Okay, and, and it's it's.

Speaker:

00:48:16,158 --> 00:48:17,750

Marc Preston: it's the funniest thing I was speaking with.

Speaker:

00:48:18,192 --> 00:48:19,459

Marc Preston: I think it was Billy Bob Thornton talking

Speaker:

00:48:19,479 --> 00:48:20,022

Marc Preston: about his.

Speaker:

00:48:20,083 --> 00:48:21,711

Marc Preston: he has a 17 year old daughter as well.

Speaker:

00:48:21,731 --> 00:48:25,320

Marc Preston: we were talking about what it was that our

Speaker:

00:48:25,340 --> 00:48:25,962

Marc Preston: kids are listening to.

Speaker:

00:48:26,070 --> 00:48:27,235

Marc Preston: Well, you know, we're just talking about

Speaker:

00:48:27,275 --> 00:48:31,089

Marc Preston: music and my daughter she's like a love

Speaker:

00:48:31,109 --> 00:48:31,290

Marc Preston: country.

Speaker:

00:48:31,290 --> 00:48:32,614

Marc Preston: I was like, well, i'm going to educate you,

Speaker:

00:48:32,754 --> 00:48:34,940

Marc Preston: you know, onto some of the stuff that was

Speaker:

00:48:34,980 --> 00:48:35,822

Marc Preston: popular back in the day.

Speaker:

00:48:35,850 --> 00:48:37,535

Marc Preston: And a kick on a song from a group called

Speaker:

00:48:37,575 --> 00:48:40,591

Marc Preston: Brooks and Dunn is called neon moon And I

Speaker:

00:48:40,631 --> 00:48:42,613

Marc Preston: started playing it And as she starts kind

Speaker:

00:48:42,653 --> 00:48:44,338

Marc Preston: of singing it and I was like, how do you

Speaker:

00:48:44,378 --> 00:48:45,100

Marc Preston: know this song?

Speaker:

00:48:45,610 --> 00:48:46,273

Marc Preston: I mean this is like.

Speaker:

00:48:46,794 --> 00:48:48,079

Marc Preston: she's like, oh, tick tock.

Speaker:

00:48:49,373 --> 00:48:50,758

Marc Preston: That's how these kids are learning about

Speaker:

00:48:50,778 --> 00:48:52,052

Marc Preston: music, because they're going to, they hear

Speaker:

00:48:52,092 --> 00:48:53,175

Marc Preston: tracks on tick tock.

Speaker:

00:48:53,516 --> 00:48:56,131

Marc Preston: but it's cool because for them some of the

Speaker:

00:48:56,151 --> 00:48:58,463

Marc Preston: stuff is new and it doesn't have a lot of

Speaker:

00:48:58,564 --> 00:49:00,111

Marc Preston: dust on it in their mind if it's on tick

Speaker:

00:49:00,151 --> 00:49:03,240

Marc Preston: tock, you know but that's what I call music.

Speaker:

00:49:04,030 --> 00:49:05,654

Marc Preston: So if I still hear those commercials in my

Speaker:

00:49:05,694 --> 00:49:06,777

Marc Preston: head, that's what I call music.

Speaker:

00:49:06,877 --> 00:49:08,421

Tom Brooke: That's right, yeah, me too.

Speaker:

00:49:09,050 --> 00:49:10,939

Marc Preston: Now next question is what's your definition

Speaker:

00:49:10,979 --> 00:49:13,210

Marc Preston: of a perfect day, from time you get up to

Speaker:

00:49:13,230 --> 00:49:14,513

Marc Preston: the time you put your head down on the

Speaker:

00:49:14,533 --> 00:49:16,278

Marc Preston: pillow, what would, what are the component

Speaker:

00:49:16,318 --> 00:49:17,622

Marc Preston: parts of a perfect day for you?

Speaker:

00:49:17,830 --> 00:49:18,812

Tom Brooke: I'd be doing a play.

Speaker:

00:49:19,633 --> 00:49:24,982

Tom Brooke: I think I'd I'd have a play to go to in the

Speaker:

00:49:25,102 --> 00:49:28,554

Tom Brooke: evening, and during the day I'd go for

Speaker:

00:49:28,594 --> 00:49:29,497

Tom Brooke: lunch with my wife.

Speaker:

00:49:30,970 --> 00:49:34,541

Tom Brooke: We drop our daughter at school and we just

Speaker:

00:49:34,601 --> 00:49:37,430

Tom Brooke: about have time to pick her up before going

Speaker:

00:49:37,550 --> 00:49:38,716

Tom Brooke: in and doing a play.

Speaker:

00:49:38,850 --> 00:49:40,856

Tom Brooke: And then maybe somebody had come to see the

Speaker:

00:49:40,896 --> 00:49:43,985

Tom Brooke: play a friend and I go out for a cup of tea

Speaker:

00:49:44,005 --> 00:49:44,747

Tom Brooke: with them afterwards.

Speaker:

00:49:45,469 --> 00:49:45,890

Tom Brooke: That'd be perfect.

Speaker:

00:49:46,572 --> 00:49:48,898

Marc Preston: I've always wanted to do the high tea, and

Speaker:

00:49:48,918 --> 00:49:49,459

Marc Preston: that's that's.

Speaker:

00:49:49,539 --> 00:49:50,442

Marc Preston: That's still on the bucket.

Speaker:

00:49:50,851 --> 00:49:52,337

Tom Brooke: If that's on the list, you must do that.

Speaker:

00:49:52,791 --> 00:49:55,455

Tom Brooke: I've become a huge fan of iced tea over

Speaker:

00:49:55,496 --> 00:49:55,656

Tom Brooke: here.

Speaker:

00:49:55,816 --> 00:49:58,481

Tom Brooke: Unsweetened iced tea not a thing in England.

Speaker:

00:49:58,601 --> 00:49:59,382

Marc Preston: Okay, unsweetened.

Speaker:

00:49:59,402 --> 00:50:01,360

Marc Preston: Yeah, down in the South Lake they always

Speaker:

00:50:01,400 --> 00:50:02,170

Marc Preston: assume you want sweet.

Speaker:

00:50:02,190 --> 00:50:03,313

Marc Preston: I was like I don't need that much sugar in

Speaker:

00:50:03,353 --> 00:50:05,077

Marc Preston: my life, you know, but it is.

Speaker:

00:50:05,799 --> 00:50:07,102

Marc Preston: But I'm the same way.

Speaker:

00:50:07,570 --> 00:50:07,710

Marc Preston: Now.

Speaker:

00:50:07,931 --> 00:50:09,255

Marc Preston: If you weren't next question if you weren't

Speaker:

00:50:09,275 --> 00:50:11,732

Marc Preston: doing what you're doing now, what would you

Speaker:

00:50:11,793 --> 00:50:13,058

Marc Preston: be doing as a vocation?

Speaker:

00:50:13,210 --> 00:50:14,254

Marc Preston: What would you be doing for a living?

Speaker:

00:50:15,390 --> 00:50:17,235

Tom Brooke: I'm a primary school teacher.

Speaker:

00:50:18,138 --> 00:50:18,860

Tom Brooke: No question.

Speaker:

00:50:19,250 --> 00:50:21,257

Marc Preston: Following in your mother's footsteps as an

Speaker:

00:50:21,317 --> 00:50:21,759

Marc Preston: educator.

Speaker:

00:50:22,311 --> 00:50:25,697

Tom Brooke: But that, that, that kids at that age, it's

Speaker:

00:50:26,198 --> 00:50:29,023

Tom Brooke: just, there's so much joy and fun.

Speaker:

00:50:29,450 --> 00:50:30,653

Marc Preston: There's sponges at that age.

Speaker:

00:50:30,734 --> 00:50:32,839

Marc Preston: Yeah, they're just soaking it all up, yeah.

Speaker:

00:50:33,770 --> 00:50:34,151

Tom Brooke: And we go to a play.

Speaker:

00:50:34,171 --> 00:50:36,338

Tom Brooke: Like she's so chatty to people that we go.

Speaker:

00:50:36,358 --> 00:50:38,735

Tom Brooke: We'll go to a playground and, you know,

Speaker:

00:50:38,755 --> 00:50:40,461

Tom Brooke: within like half an hour there's this

Speaker:

00:50:40,481 --> 00:50:43,250

Tom Brooke: little gang and they're all chasing me and

Speaker:

00:50:43,471 --> 00:50:45,955

Tom Brooke: chucking stuff at me and, you know,

Speaker:

00:50:47,157 --> 00:50:49,602

Tom Brooke: spearing me with sticks, and it's just

Speaker:

00:50:49,642 --> 00:50:49,922

Tom Brooke: heaven.

Speaker:

00:50:51,410 --> 00:50:52,875

Marc Preston: You know it's crazy is when that you can

Speaker:

00:50:52,915 --> 00:50:54,720

Marc Preston: remember kids doing that and they're just

Speaker:

00:50:54,750 --> 00:50:56,256

Marc Preston: like wacky little weird kids and they're

Speaker:

00:50:56,316 --> 00:50:56,998

Marc Preston: fun and everything.

Speaker:

00:50:57,230 --> 00:51:00,557

Marc Preston: Now, you know all these kids live on

Speaker:

00:51:00,617 --> 00:51:03,770

Marc Preston: Instagram and and you know my friends, so

Speaker:

00:51:03,810 --> 00:51:05,656

Marc Preston: you kind of it's funny because you kind of

Speaker:

00:51:05,736 --> 00:51:06,940

Marc Preston: you know, as a parent, you have to somewhat

Speaker:

00:51:07,030 --> 00:51:08,935

Marc Preston: like, keep an eye on what is the ecosystem

Speaker:

00:51:08,995 --> 00:51:09,396

Marc Preston: on my child.

Speaker:

00:51:09,416 --> 00:51:10,138

Marc Preston: What are they dealing with?

Speaker:

00:51:10,158 --> 00:51:13,375

Marc Preston: Yeah, and you see these kids like dear God,

Speaker:

00:51:13,576 --> 00:51:15,441

Marc Preston: they're now off almost to college and

Speaker:

00:51:15,461 --> 00:51:16,895

Marc Preston: they're like they're real human beings now,

Speaker:

00:51:17,090 --> 00:51:18,495

Marc Preston: but I remember when they were goofy little

Speaker:

00:51:18,555 --> 00:51:18,876

Marc Preston: kids.

Speaker:

00:51:18,956 --> 00:51:21,213

Marc Preston: It's, it's weird Again, it's like, you know

Speaker:

00:51:21,233 --> 00:51:22,817

Marc Preston: it must mean I'm getting older as well,

Speaker:

00:51:22,857 --> 00:51:24,181

Marc Preston: which I refuse to accept.

Speaker:

00:51:26,014 --> 00:51:27,057

Tom Brooke: At what age did you?

Speaker:

00:51:27,257 --> 00:51:28,119

Tom Brooke: did you give them phones?

Speaker:

00:51:29,371 --> 00:51:32,437

Marc Preston: I let's see Lily, my oldest Lily.

Speaker:

00:51:32,537 --> 00:51:38,388

Marc Preston: She had one when she was 12, 12, 13,.

Speaker:

00:51:38,629 --> 00:51:40,133

Marc Preston: I think, is when she she had one a little

Speaker:

00:51:40,194 --> 00:51:41,871

Marc Preston: younger, just for safety thing It was.

Speaker:

00:51:42,252 --> 00:51:43,296

Marc Preston: It was a little flip phone.

Speaker:

00:51:43,336 --> 00:51:45,193

Marc Preston: It wasn't Reno, so she had it in her bag,

Speaker:

00:51:45,293 --> 00:51:47,780

Marc Preston: but I think the kids had them.

Speaker:

00:51:48,130 --> 00:51:52,800

Marc Preston: I think we all got them around 12, 13.

Speaker:

00:51:52,880 --> 00:51:53,381

Tom Brooke: Okay, cool.

Speaker:

00:51:53,541 --> 00:51:56,675

Tom Brooke: Good, i've just got that tallies and I just

Speaker:

00:51:56,695 --> 00:51:58,379

Tom Brooke: want to try and keep her phone free for as

Speaker:

00:51:58,399 --> 00:51:58,901

Tom Brooke: long as possible.

Speaker:

00:51:59,651 --> 00:51:59,971

Marc Preston: I, i.

Speaker:

00:52:00,212 --> 00:52:04,264

Marc Preston: If I was to hit rewind, i would say that

Speaker:

00:52:04,464 --> 00:52:06,610

Marc Preston: that would be a really good idea because it

Speaker:

00:52:06,691 --> 00:52:06,992

Marc Preston: gives.

Speaker:

00:52:08,395 --> 00:52:10,782

Marc Preston: I'm no sociologist or psychologist, but I

Speaker:

00:52:11,003 --> 00:52:13,670

Marc Preston: feel like the socialization that happens

Speaker:

00:52:13,831 --> 00:52:14,614

Marc Preston: with phones.

Speaker:

00:52:15,679 --> 00:52:17,466

Marc Preston: The perception of the outside world, the

Speaker:

00:52:17,506 --> 00:52:18,711

Marc Preston: kind of the screen seeing the world through

Speaker:

00:52:18,751 --> 00:52:20,879

Marc Preston: your screen is, is skewed.

Speaker:

00:52:21,150 --> 00:52:22,175

Announcer: The same thing as actors.

Speaker:

00:52:22,215 --> 00:52:23,722

Marc Preston: You know what you know.

Speaker:

00:52:23,803 --> 00:52:25,671

Marc Preston: You know you can watch a film you've done

Speaker:

00:52:25,691 --> 00:52:28,283

Marc Preston: and you know the edit that went in to

Speaker:

00:52:28,343 --> 00:52:29,790

Marc Preston: create that moment you know, because that's

Speaker:

00:52:29,910 --> 00:52:31,336

Marc Preston: the second telling of the story, is the

Speaker:

00:52:31,396 --> 00:52:32,992

Marc Preston: edit And there's so much.

Speaker:

00:52:33,373 --> 00:52:36,001

Marc Preston: You know, taking 50 pictures to get one

Speaker:

00:52:36,061 --> 00:52:39,551

Marc Preston: spontaneous, you know, a random shot, is

Speaker:

00:52:39,572 --> 00:52:43,201

Marc Preston: like it's, it's, I think, kids, I, I, I

Speaker:

00:52:43,241 --> 00:52:43,502

Marc Preston: don't know.

Speaker:

00:52:43,570 --> 00:52:45,034

Marc Preston: I think we'll find out in a you know, in a

Speaker:

00:52:45,074 --> 00:52:47,140

Marc Preston: number of years, the impact it may or may

Speaker:

00:52:47,180 --> 00:52:47,641

Marc Preston: not have had.

Speaker:

00:52:48,050 --> 00:52:51,582

Marc Preston: My daughter rages against anything taking

Speaker:

00:52:51,622 --> 00:52:54,070

Marc Preston: pictures and she's, we're going to, I'm in

Speaker:

00:52:54,190 --> 00:52:56,776

Marc Preston: a juror for the voice arts awards, like

Speaker:

00:52:56,796 --> 00:52:58,499

Marc Preston: kind of like the Emmys for voiceover, I

Speaker:

00:52:58,539 --> 00:53:01,493

Marc Preston: guess, And we're going out there now like

Speaker:

00:53:01,514 --> 00:53:03,712

Marc Preston: there's a red carpet a couple of weeks, And

Speaker:

00:53:03,852 --> 00:53:05,438

Marc Preston: my daughter's like, do I have to take

Speaker:

00:53:05,478 --> 00:53:05,739

Marc Preston: pictures?

Speaker:

00:53:05,810 --> 00:53:06,894

Marc Preston: Like, baby, it's a red carpet.

Speaker:

00:53:07,930 --> 00:53:09,374

Marc Preston: She does not post on social media.

Speaker:

00:53:09,435 --> 00:53:10,257

Marc Preston: None of my kids do.

Speaker:

00:53:10,357 --> 00:53:11,360

Marc Preston: They watch it for fun.

Speaker:

00:53:11,490 --> 00:53:13,254

Marc Preston: It's not a some of their friends, on the

Speaker:

00:53:13,294 --> 00:53:15,739

Marc Preston: other hand, it's a very it's part of the

Speaker:

00:53:15,819 --> 00:53:16,941

Marc Preston: social ecosystem.

Speaker:

00:53:17,122 --> 00:53:17,402

Marc Preston: I don't know.

Speaker:

00:53:18,130 --> 00:53:19,644

Marc Preston: I'm just glad that when I was growing up,

Speaker:

00:53:19,680 --> 00:53:21,555

Marc Preston: part of it is there's no video or picture

Speaker:

00:53:21,555 --> 00:53:22,719

Marc Preston: documentation of my mischief.

Speaker:

00:53:22,930 --> 00:53:24,074

Announcer: So I'm kind of happy.

Speaker:

00:53:24,094 --> 00:53:25,378

Marc Preston: Fair enough.

Speaker:

00:53:25,890 --> 00:53:27,457

Marc Preston: The last question is if you were to jump

Speaker:

00:53:27,497 --> 00:53:30,009

Marc Preston: into a DeLorean, go back in time.

Speaker:

00:53:30,029 --> 00:53:31,034

Marc Preston: You're 16 years old.

Speaker:

00:53:31,115 --> 00:53:32,502

Marc Preston: What piece of advice are you going to offer

Speaker:

00:53:32,542 --> 00:53:34,431

Marc Preston: yourself, either to make life better in

Speaker:

00:53:34,451 --> 00:53:36,897

Marc Preston: that moment, or or just get yourself on a

Speaker:

00:53:36,938 --> 00:53:37,559

Marc Preston: different rail?

Speaker:

00:53:38,730 --> 00:53:40,270

Marc Preston: You know just some piece of advice Maybe

Speaker:

00:53:40,290 --> 00:53:41,555

Marc Preston: you think you needed to hear at 16.

Speaker:

00:53:42,210 --> 00:53:44,778

Tom Brooke: I mean, I don't, I don't know if it would

Speaker:

00:53:44,818 --> 00:53:48,550

Tom Brooke: be, if it would be a cheat, but I wonder if

Speaker:

00:53:48,790 --> 00:53:52,657

Tom Brooke: I, if I could cryptically tell my younger

Speaker:

00:53:52,697 --> 00:53:56,544

Tom Brooke: self not to worry too much, that things

Speaker:

00:53:56,604 --> 00:54:01,990

Tom Brooke: would would basically be okay, And

Speaker:

00:54:02,050 --> 00:54:04,037

Tom Brooke: certainly from from an acting point of view.

Speaker:

00:54:04,650 --> 00:54:05,915

Marc Preston: I hear that frequently.

Speaker:

00:54:05,975 --> 00:54:07,652

Marc Preston: That's a frequent thing And I just wonder.

Speaker:

00:54:07,672 --> 00:54:10,121

Marc Preston: it makes me wonder if, if worrying and

Speaker:

00:54:10,181 --> 00:54:12,791

Marc Preston: stressing about the future is just a

Speaker:

00:54:12,831 --> 00:54:14,857

Marc Preston: component part of the life of somebody

Speaker:

00:54:15,379 --> 00:54:16,041

Marc Preston: who's creative.

Speaker:

00:54:16,150 --> 00:54:17,656

Marc Preston: I don't know, because I hear that so often.

Speaker:

00:54:17,876 --> 00:54:18,077

Announcer: Do you?

Speaker:

00:54:18,690 --> 00:54:19,516

Announcer: It makes me wonder is that?

Speaker:

00:54:19,536 --> 00:54:20,502

Marc Preston: because I was the same way.

Speaker:

00:54:21,151 --> 00:54:22,114

Marc Preston: I was like what's it going to be?

Speaker:

00:54:22,134 --> 00:54:23,117

Marc Preston: What's it going to be, what do I need to do?

Speaker:

00:54:24,290 --> 00:54:25,539

Tom Brooke: I need to have the urgency that you had.

Speaker:

00:54:27,170 --> 00:54:31,201
